Physical origin of superconductivity in EuFe2As1.4P0.6 and EuFe2As2: pressure-induce valence change of europium

Superconductivity can be realized in Eu-containing pnictides by application of chemical (internal) and physical (external) pressure, the intrinsic physical mechanism of which attracts much attention in physics community. Here we present the experimental evidence for the valence change of europium in compounds of EuFe2As1.4P0.6 exposed to ambient pressure and EuFe2As2 to high pressure by x-ray absorption measurements on L3-Eu edge. We find that the absorption spectrum of EuFe2As1.4P0.6 at ambient pressure shows clear spectra weight transfer from a divalent to a trivalent state. Furthermore, application of pressure on EuFe2As2 using a diamond anvil cell shows a similar behavior of valence transition as EuFe2As1.4P0.6. These findings are the first observation of superconductivity mechanized by valence change in pnictides superconductors and elucidate the intrinsic physical origin of superconductivity in EuFe2As1.4P0.6 and compressed EuFe2As2.

Magnetic Field Control of the Quantum Chaotic Dynamics of Hydrogen Analogues in an Anisotropic Crystal Field

We report magnetic field control of the quantum chaotic dynamics of hydrogen analogues in an anisotropic solid state environment. The chaoticity of the system dynamics was quantified by means of energy level statistics. We analyzed the magnetic field dependence of the statistical distribution of the impurity energy levels and found a smooth transition between the Poisson limit and the Wigner limit, i.e. transition between regular Poisson and fully chaotic Wigner dynamics. Effect of the crystal field anisotropy on the quantum chaotic dynamics, which manifests itself in characteristic transitions between regularity and chaos for different field orientations, was demonstrated.

Quantitative Determination of Eliashberg Function and Evidence of Strong Electron Coupling with Multiple Phonon Modes in Heavily Over doped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6

Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on a heavily overdoped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6 (Tc> 5 K) superconductor. Taking advantage of the high-precision data on the subtle change of the quasi-particle dispersion at different temperatures, we develop a general procedure to determine the bare band dispersion and extract the bosonic spectral function quantitatively. Our results show unambiguously that the 70 meV nodal kink is due to the electron coupling with the multiple phonon modes, with a large mass enhancement factor Lamda= 0.42 even in the heavily over-doped regime.

Coexistence of Fermi arcs and Fermi pockets in a high Tc copper oxide superconductor

In the pseudogap state of the high-Tc copper-oxide (cuprate) superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have seen an Fermi arc, i.e., an open-ended gapless section in the large Fermi surface, rather than a closed loop expected of an ordinary metal. This is all the more puzzling because Fermi pockets (small closed Fermi surface features) have been suggested from recent quantum oscillation measurements. The Fermi arcs have worried the high-Tc community for many years because they cannot be understood in terms of existing theories. Theorists came up with a way out in the form of conventional Fermi surface pockets associated with competing order, with a back side that is for detailed reasons invisible by photoemission. Here we report ARPES measurements of La-Bi2201 that give direct evidence of the Fermi pocket. The charge carriers in the pocket are holes and the pockets show an unusual dependence upon doping, namely, they exist in underdoped but not overdoped samples. A big surprise is that these Fermi pockets appear to coexist with the Fermi arcs. This coexistence has not been expected theoretically and the understanding of the mysterious pseudogap state in the high-Tc cuprate superconductors will rely critically on understanding such a new finding.

Modified Basis Pursuit Denoising(MODIFIED-BPDN) for Noisy Compressive Sensing with Partially Known Support

In this work, we study the problem of reconstructing a sparse signal from a limited number of linear 'incoherent' noisy measurements, when a part of its support is known. The known part of the support may be available from prior knowledge or from the previous time instant (in applications requiring recursive reconstruction of a time sequence of sparse signals, e.g. dynamic MRI). We study a modification of Basis Pursuit Denoising (BPDN) and bound its reconstruction error. A key feature of our work is that the bounds that we obtain are computable. Hence, we are able to use Monte Carlo to study their average behavior as the size of the unknown support increases. We also demonstrate that when the unknown support size is small, modified-BPDN bounds are much tighter than those for BPDN, and hold under much weaker sufficient conditions (require fewer measurements).

Pressure-induced lattice collapse in tetragonal phase and structural phase transition in single crystalline Fe1.05Te

We report studies of in-situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) and electronic properties on the single crystalline of Fe1.05Te compound under high pressure. The results demonstrated that the sample undergoes a pressure-induced lattice collapse in tetragonal phase (cT) at 4 GPa at room temperature. The cT phase in turn transfers to monoclinic (M) phase with increasing pressure to 14 GPa. The resistance measurements under pressures show that the onset temperature of structural phase transition (TSTR) decreases upon transformation from the tetragonal (T) to the cT phase and turns up at the 4 GPa where is the boundary pressure of T-cT phase. The onset of antiferromagnetic transition (TAF) shows little change up to 0.8 GPa by magnetization measurements. In the domain of M phase, the sample behaves like semiconductor at low temperature. No superconductivity is observed under the pressure investigated.

Effect of electron-doping on spin excitations of underdoped BaFe$_{1.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$As$_{2}$

We use neutron scattering to study magnetic order and spin excitations in BaFe$_{1.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$As$_{2}$. On cooling, the system first changes the lattice symmetry from tetragonal to orthoromhbic near $\sim$97 K, and then orders antiferromagnetically at $T_N=91$ K before developing weak superconductivity below $\sim$15 K. Although superconductivity appears to co-exist with static antiferromagnetic order from transport and neutron diffraction measurement, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal that magnetic excitations do not respond to superconductivity. Instead, the effect of electron-doping is to reduce the c-axis exchange coupling in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and induce quasi two-dimensional spin excitations. These results suggest that transition from three-dimensional spin waves to two-dimensional spin excitations by electron-doping is important for the separated structural/magnetic phase transitions and high-temperature superconductivity in iron arsenides.

The Wiener-Khinchin Theorem for Non-wide Sense stationary Random Processes

We extend the Wiener-Khinchin theorem to non-wide sense stationary (WSS) random processes, i.e. we prove that, under certain assumptions, the power spectral density (PSD) of any random process is equal to the Fourier transform of the time-averaged autocorrelation function. We use the theorem to show that bandlimitedness of the PSD implies bandlimitedness of the generalized-PSD for a certain class of non-WSS signals. This fact allows us to apply the Nyquist criterion derived by Gardner for the generalized-PSD.

Different mechanisms for efficient optical transmission through bilayered subwavelength patterned metal films

Light transmission through bilayered thin metal films perforated with subwavelength hole arrays are numerically studied based on a full-vector finite-difference time-domain approach. A variety of transmission peaks originating from different physical mechanisms are observed. In addition to the direct tunnelling and Fabry-Pèrot resonances, generally possessed by idealized bilayered dielectric slabs, the near-field localized plasmon polaritons also play important roles. They not only influence the direct tunnelling in a destructive or constructive way, the interactions between these localized plasmon polaritons on different metal films also result in additional channels which transfer optical energy effectively.

Growth, characterization and physical properties of high-quality large single crystals of Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_6$ high-temperature superconductors

High quality large Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_6$(La-Bi2201) single crystals have been successfully grown by the traveling solvent floating zone technique. The samples are characterized by compositional and structural analyzes and their physical properties are investigated by magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements. Superconducting samples with sharp superconducting transitions are obtained covering a wide range of doping from overdoped (x<0.40), optimally-doped (x~0.40), underdoped (0.40 0.84). Crystals as large as ~40 * 2.0 * 1 mm3 are obtained for x=0.73. Sharp superconducting transition with a width less than 2 K and nearly perfect Meissner signal of superconductivity are achieved for x=0.40. The availability of the La-Bi2201 single crystals will provide an ideal system to study the physical properties, electronic structure and mechanism of high temperature superconductivity

Floating-zone growth and property characterizations of high-quality La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals

We have grown underdoped (x = 0.11, 0.12) and optimally doped (x = 0.16) La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) crystals by traveling-solvent floating-zone (TSFZ) technique. In order to obtain LSCO single crystals of high quality, we have made much effort to optimize the preparation procedures. For example, we have adopted sol-gel route to prepare highly fine and homogeneous LSCO precursor powder, and used quite slow growth rate. The sizable grown crystal ingots are typically about 6.6 mm in diameter and 100 mm in length, and no impurity phases were detected. The high quality of grown crystals has been verified by double-crystal x-ray rocking curves, with full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) being only 113 ~ 150 arcseconds (or 0.03 deg - 0.04 deg), which are the best data reported so far for LSCO crystals. The superconducting critical temperatures (TC's) of the cuprate crystals are 30 K for x = 0.11, 31 K for x = 0.12 and 38.5 K for x = 0.16 samples according to magnetic measurements.

High pressure study on LaFeAsO with different Tc

We report studies on pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of LaFeAsO, LaFeAs(O0.5F0.5) and LaFeAs(O0.89F0.11) samples. In-situ resistance measurements under high pressure showed that the Tc of these three compounds increases with pressure initially, reaches a maximum value and then decreases with further increasing pressure, although the Tc at ambient pressure are different. The onset Tc of LaFeAsO is ~50 K at 1.5 GPa, which is the highest record in La-based oxypnicited system. The significant change in Tc induced by pressure is attributed to the orbital degeneracy and the electron density of state at the Fermi level.

Feshbach resonances and mesoscopic phase separation near a quantum critical point in multiband FeAs-based superconductors

High Tc superconductivity in FeAs-based multilayers (pnictides), evading temperature decoherence effects in a quantum condensate, is assigned to a Feshbach resonance (called also shape resonance) in the exchange-like interband pairing. The resonance is switched on by tuning the chemical potential at an electronic topological transition (ETT) near a band edge, where the Fermi surface topology of one of the subbands changes from 1D to 2D topology. We show that the tuning is realized by changing i) the misfit strain between the superconducting planes and the spacers ii) the charge density and iii) the disorder. The system is at the verge of a catastrophe i.e. near a structural and magnetic phase transition associated with the stripes (analogous to the 1/8 stripe phase in cuprates) order to disorder phase transition. Fine tuning of both the chemical potential and the disorder pushes the critical temperature Ts of this phase transition to zero giving a quantum critical point. Here the quantum lattice and magnetic fluctuations promote the Feshbach resonance of the exchange-like anisotropic pairing. This superconducting phase that resists to the attacks of temperature is shown to be controlled by the interplay of the hopping energy between stripes and the quantum fluctuations. The superconducting gaps in the multiple Fermi surface spots reported by the recent ARPES experiment of D. V. Evtushinsky et al. arXiv:0809.4455 are shown to support the Feshbach scenario.

The effect of internal pressure on the tetragonal to monoclinic structural phase transition in ReOFeAs: the case of NdOFeAs

We report the temperature dependent x-ray powder diffraction of the quaternary compound NdOFeAs (also called NdFeAsO) in the range between 300 K and 95 K. We have detected the structural phase transition from the tetragonal phase, with P4/nmm space group, to the orthorhombic or monoclinic phase, with Cmma or P112/a1 (or P2/c) space group, over a broad temperature range from 150 K to 120 K, centered at T0 ~137 K. Therefore the temperature of this structural phase transition is strongly reduced, by about ~30K, by increasing the internal chemical pressure going from LaOFeAs to NdOFeAs. In contrast the superconducting critical temperature increases from 27 K to 51 K going from LaOFeAs to NdOFeAs doped samples. This result shows that the normal striped orthorhombic Cmma phase competes with the superconducting tetragonal phase. Therefore by controlling the internal chemical pressure in new materials it should be possible to push toward zero the critical temperature T0 of the structural phase transition, giving the striped phase, in order to get superconductors with higher Tc.

Monotonic d-wave Superconducting Gap in Optimally-Doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ superconductor is investigated by super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard {\it d}-wave form. Pseudogap opens above T$_c$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a "Fermi arc" formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the "Fermi arc", the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting state which changes little with temperature and shows no abrupt change across T$_c$. These observations indicate that the pseudogap and superconducting gap are closely related and favor the picture that the pseudogap is a precursor to the superconducting gap.

Identification of Nodal Kink in Electron-Doped (Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$)CuO$_4$ Superconductor from Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on the electron-doped (Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$)CuO$_4$ high temperature superconductor. We have revealed a clear kink at $\sim$60 meV in the dispersion along the (0,0)-($π$,$π$) nodal direction, accompanied by a peak-dip-hump feature in the photoemission spectra. This indicates that the nodal electrons are coupled to collective excitations (bosons) in electron-doped superconductors, with the phonons as the most likely candidate of the boson. This finding has established a universality of nodal electron coupling in both hole- and electron-doped high temperature cuprate superconductors.

Fermi Surface and Band Renormalization in (Sr,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$ Superconductor from Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on (Sr,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor (Tc=21 K). Three hole-like Fermi surface sheets are clearly resolved for the first time around the Gamma point. The overall electronic structure shows significant difference from the band structure calculations. Qualitative agreement between the measured and calculated band structure is realized by assuming a chemical potential shift of -0.2 eV. The obvious band renormalization suggests the importance of electron correlation in understanding the electronic structure of the Fe-based compounds.
