Rare-earth chalcohalides: A family of van der Waals layered Kitaev spin liquid candidates

Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) system has attracted tremendous attention in past years because of its fundamental significance in condensed matter physics and promising applications in fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. Material realization of such a system remains a major challenge in the field due to the unusual configuration of anisotropic spin interactions, though great effort has been made before. Here we reveal that rare-earth chalcohalides REChX (RE=rare earth, Ch=O, S, Se, Te, X=F, Cl, Br, I) can serve as a family of KSL candidates. Most family members have the typical SmSI-type structure with a high symmetry of R-3m and rare-earth magnetic ions form an undistorted honeycomb lattice. The strong spin-orbit coupling of 4f electrons intrinsically offers anisotropic spin interactions as required by Kitaev model. We have grown the crystals of YbOCl and synthesized the polycrystals of SmSI, ErOF, HoOF and DyOF, and made careful structural characterizations. We carry out magnetic and heat capacity measurements down to 1.8 K and find no obvious magnetic transition in all the samples but DyOF. The van der Waals interlayer coupling highlights the true two-dimensionality of the family which is vital for the exact realization of Abelian/non-Abelian anyons, and the graphene-like feature will be a prominent advantage for developing miniaturized devices. The family is expected to act as an inspiring material platform for the exploration of KSL physics.

Stability and $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ Performance Analysis of Stochastic Linear Networked and Quantized Control Systems

This paper studies the stability and $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ performance analysis problem for linear networked and quantized control systems with both communication delays random packet losses. To deal with the network-induced uncertainties and random packet dropouts, a novel discrete-time stochastic system model is developed for continuous-time networked control systems, and further overapproximated via a polytopic system with norm-bounded uncertainty. Based on the overapproximated system model, sufficient conditions are established for linear networked and quantized control systems in different cases to guarantee input-to-state stability and $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ performance with respect to the network-induced errors. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrated the developed results.

Ultrastrong Magnon-Magnon Coupling Dominated by Antiresonant Interactions

Exotic quantum vacuum phenomena are predicted in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) systems with ultrastrong light-matter interactions. Their ground states are predicted to be vacuum squeezed states with suppressed quantum fluctuations. The source of such phenomena are antiresonant terms in the Hamiltonian, yet antiresonant interactions are typically negligible compared to resonant interactions in light-matter systems. We report an unusual coupled matter-matter system of magnons that can simulate a unique cavity QED Hamiltonian with coupling strengths that are easily tunable into the ultrastrong coupling regime and with dominant antiresonant terms. We found a novel regime where vacuum Bloch-Siegert shifts, the hallmark of antiresonant interactions, greatly exceed analogous frequency shifts from resonant interactions. Further, we theoretically explored the system's ground state and calculated up to 5.9 dB of quantum fluctuation suppression. These observations demonstrate that magnonic systems provide an ideal platform for simulating exotic quantum vacuum phenomena predicted in ultrastrongly coupled light-matter systems.

A Differential-Cascaded Paradigm for Control of Nonlinear Systems

This paper focuses on developing a new paradigm motivated by investigating the consensus problem of networked Lagrangian systems with time-varying delay and switching topologies. We present adaptive controllers with piecewise continuous or arbitrary times differentiable control torques for realizing consensus of Lagrangian systems, extending the results in the literature. This specific study motivates the formulation of a new paradigm referred to as forwardstepping, which is shown to be a systematic tool for solving various nonlinear control problems. One distinctive point associated with forwardstepping is that the order of the reference dynamics is typically specified to be equal to or higher than that of the original nonlinear system, and the reference dynamics and the nonlinear system are governed by a differential/dynamic-cascaded structure. The order invariance or increment of the specified reference dynamics with respect to the nonlinear system and their differential/dynamic-cascaded structure expands significantly the design freedom and thus facilitates the seeking of solutions to many nonlinear control problems which would otherwise often be intractable.

Two-photon MINFLUX with doubled localization precision

Achieving localization with molecular precision has been of great interest for extending fluorescence microscopy to nanoscopy. MINFLUX pioneers this transition through point spread function (PSF) engineering, yet its performance is primarily limited by the signal-to-background ratio. Here we demonstrate that applying two-photon excitation to MINFLUX would double its localization precision through PSF engineering by nonlinear effect. Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) is studied as the maximum localization precision, and CRB of two-photon MINFLUX is halved compared to single-photon MINFLUX in all three dimensions. Meanwhile, in order to achieve same localization precision with single-photon MINFLUX, two-photon MINFLUX requires only 1/4 of fluorescence photons, contributing to a possible 4-fold temporal resolution. Benefitted from two-photon excitation, registration-free multicolor nanoscopy and ultrafast color tracking can be achieved. Localization precision of MINFLUX can also be doubled using excitation with second-order Laguerre-Gaussian beams but would suffer from high fluorescence background compared to single-photon and two-photon first-order MINFLUX.

Symbolic Abstractions for Nonlinear Control Systems via Feedback Refinement Relation

This paper studies the construction of symbolic abstractions for nonlinear control systems via feedback refinement relation. Both the delay-free and time-delay cases are addressed. For the delay-free case, to reduce the computational complexity, we propose a new approximation approach for the state and input sets based on a static quantizer, and then a novel symbolic model is constructed such that the original system and the symbolic model satisfy the feedback refinement relation. For the time-delay case, both static and dynamic quantizers are combined to approximate the state and input sets. This leads to a novel dynamic symbolic model for time-delay control systems, and a feedback refinement relation is established between the original system and the symbolic model. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the obtained results.

Dynamic Quantization based Symbolic Abstractions for Nonlinear Control Systems

This paper studies the construction of dynamic symbolic abstractions for nonlinear control systems via dynamic quantization. Since computational complexity is a fundamental problem in the use of discrete abstractions, a dynamic quantizer with a time-varying quantization parameter is first applied to deal with this problem. Due to the dynamic quantizer, a dynamic approximation approach is proposed for the state and input sets. Based on the dynamic approximation, dynamic symbolic abstractions are constructed for nonlinear control systems, and an approximate bisimulation relation is guaranteed for the original system and the constructed dynamic symbolic abstraction. Finally, the obtained results are illustrated through a numerical example from path planning of mobile robots.

Logarithmic Quantization based Symbolic Abstractions for Nonlinear Control Systems

This paper studies symbolic abstractions for nonlinear control systems using logarithmic quantization. With a logarithmic quantizer, we approximate the state and input sets, and then construct a novel discrete abstraction for nonlinear control systems. A feedback refinement relation between the constructed discrete abstraction and the original system is established. Using the constructed discrete abstraction, the safety controller synthesis problem is studied. With the discrete abstraction and the abstract specification, the existence of a safety controller is investigated, and the algorithm is proposed to compute the abstract controller. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the obtained results.

Predicting the Structural, Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Few Atomic-layer Polar Perovskite

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to predict the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of electrically neutral or charged few-atomic-layer (AL) oxides whose parent systems are based on polar perovskite $KTaO_{3}$. Their properties vary greatly with the number of ALs ($n_{AL}$) and the stoichiometric ratio. In the few-AL limit ($n_{AL}\leqslant 14$), the even AL (EL) systems with chemical formula $(KTaO_{3})_{n}$ are semiconductors, while the odd AL (OL) systems with formula ($K_{n+1}Ta_{n}O_{3n+1}$ or $K_{n}Ta_{n+1}O_{3n+2}$) are half-metal except for the unique $KTa_{2}O_{5}$ case which is a semiconductor due to the large Peierls distortions. After reaching certain critical thickness ($n_{AL}>14$), the EL systems show ferromagnetic surface states, while ferromagnetism disappears in the OL systems. These predictions from fundamental complexity of polar perovskite when approaching the two-dimensional (2D) limit may be helpful for interpreting experimental observations later.

An Energy Efficient Authentication Scheme using Chebyshev Chaotic Map for Smart Grid Environment

As one of the important applications of Smart grid, charging between electric vehicles has attracted much attention. However, authentication between vehicle users and an aggregator may be vulnerable to various attacks due to the usage of wireless communications. In order to reduce the computational costs yet preserve required security, the Chebyshev chaotic map based authentication schemes are proposed. However, the security requirements of Chebyshev polynomials bring a new challenge to the design of authentication schemes based on Chebyshev chaotic maps. To solve this issue, we propose a practical Chebyshev polynomial algorithm by using a binary exponentiation algorithm based on square matrix to achieve secure and efficient Chebyshev polynomial computation. We further apply the proposed algorithm to construct an energy-efficient authentication and key agreement scheme for smart grid environments. Compared with state-of-the-art schemes, the proposed authentication scheme effectively reduces the computational costs and communication costs by adopting the proposed Chebyshev polynomial algorithm. Furthermore, the ProVerif tool is employed to analyze the security of the proposed authentication scheme. Our experimental results justified that our proposed authentication scheme can outperform state-of-the-art schemes in terms of the computational overhead while achieving privacy protection.

Tunable Magnetism and Insulator-Metal Transition in Bilayer Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal oxide perovskites greatly expand the field of available 2D multifunctional material systems. Here, based on density functional theory calculations, we predicted the presence of ferromagnetism orders accompanying with an insulator-metal phase transition in bilayer $KNbO_{3}$ and $KTaO_{3}$ by applying strain engineering and/or external electric field. Our results will contribute to the applications of few-layer transition metal oxide perovskites in the emerging spintronics and straintronics.

Fair and autonomous sharing of federate learning models in mobile Internet of Things

Federate learning can conduct machine learning as well as protect the privacy of self-owned training data on corresponding ends, instead of having to upload to a central trusted data aggregation server. In mobile scenarios, a centralized trusted server may not be existing, and even though it exists, the delay will not be manageable, e.g., smart driving cars. Thus, mobile federate learning at the edge with privacy-awareness is attracted more and more attentions. It then imposes a problem - after data are trained on a mobile terminal to obtain a learned model, how to share the model parameters among others to create more accurate and robust accumulative final model. This kind of model sharing confronts several challenges, e.g., the sharing must be conducted without a third trusted party (autonomously), and the sharing must be fair as model training (by training data)is valuable. To tackle the above challenges, we propose a smart contract and IPFS (Inter-Planetary File System) based model sharing protocol and algorithms to address the challenges. The proposed protocol does not rely on a trusted third party, where individual-learned models are shared/stored in corresponding ends. Conducted through extensive experiments, three main steps of the proposed protocol are evaluated. The average executive time of the three steps are 0.059s, 0.060s and 0.032s, demonstrating its efficiency.

Quillen equivalence of singular model categories

Let $R$ be a left-Gorenstein ring. We show that there is a Quillen equivalence between singular contraderived model category and singular coderived model category. Consequently, an equivalence between the homotopy category of exact complexes of projective modules and the homotopy category of exact complexes of injective modules is given.

Applications of cotorsion triples

We study homotopy categories of model categories arising from a cotorsion triple, and the equivalences between corresponding stable categories. We characterize homological dimensions with respect to a cotorsion triple. Then, we lift cotorsion triple to complexes, and get the equivalence of homotopy categories of complexes via Quillen equivalence of model categories. Finally, we specify to Gorenstein cotorsion triple $(\mathcal{GP}, \mathcal{W}, \mathcal{GI})$. By Quillen equivalence, it is shown that for a left-Gorenstein ring, there is an equivalence $\mathrm{K}(\mathcal{GP})\simeq \mathrm{K}(\mathcal{GI})$, which restricts to an equivalence $\mathrm{K}(\mathcal{P})\simeq \mathrm{K}(\mathcal{I})$ (compare to [J. Algebra, 2010, 324:2718-2731]); a new proof for Bennis and Mahdou's equality of Gorenstein global dimension is also given.

Distributed Continuous-Time Optimization with Time-Varying Objective Functions and Inequality Constraints

This paper is devoted to the distributed continuous-time optimization problem with time-varying objective functions and time-varying nonlinear inequality constraints. Different from most studied distributed optimization problems with time-invariant objective functions and constraints, the optimal solution in this paper is time varying and forms a trajectory. To minimize the global time-varying objective function subject to time-varying local constraint functions using only local information and local interaction, we present a distributed control algorithm that consists of a sliding-mode part and a Hessian-based optimization part. The asymptotical convergence of the proposed algorithm to the optimal solution is studied under suitable assumptions. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through a simulation example.

Frobenius functors and Gorenstein homological properties

We prove that any faithful Frobenius functor between abelian categories preserves the Gorenstein projective dimension of objects. Consequently, it preserves and reflects Gorenstein projective objects. We give conditions on when a Frobenius functor preserves the stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects, the singularity categories and the Gorenstein defect categories, respectively. In the appendix, we give a direct proof of the following known result: for an abelian category with enough projectives and injectives, its global Gorenstein projective dimension coincides with its global Gorenstein injective dimension.

Direct Observation of One-Dimensional Peierls-Type Charge Density Wave in Twin Boundaries of Monolayer MoTe$_2$

One-dimensional (1D) metallic mirror-twin boundaries (MTBs) in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) exhibit a periodic charge modulation and provide an ideal platform for exploring collective electron behavior in the confined system. The underlying mechanism of the charge modulation and how the electrons travel in 1D structures remain controversial. Here, for the first time, we observed atomic-scale structures of the charge distribution within one period in MTB of monolayer MoTe2 by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). The coexisting apparent periodic lattice distortions and U-shaped energy gap clearly demonstrate a Peierls-type charge density wave (CDW). Equidistant quantized energy levels with varied periodicity are further discovered outside the CDW gap along the metallic MTB. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are in good agreement with the gapped electronic structures and reveal they originate mainly from Mo 4d orbital. Our work presents hallmark evidence of the 1D Peierls-type CDW on the metallic MTBs and offers opportunities to study the underlying physics of 1D charge modulation.

Combined sub-sampling and analytical integration for efficient large-scale $GW$ calculations for 2D systems

Accurate and efficient predictions of the quasiparticle properties of complex materials remain a major challenge due to the convergence issue and the unfavorable scaling of the computational cost with respect to the system size. Quasiparticle $GW$ calculations for two dimensional (2D) materials are especially difficult. The unusual analytical behaviors of the dielectric screening and the electron self-energy of 2D materials make the conventional Brillouin zone (BZ) integration approach rather inefficient and require an extremely dense $k$-grid to properly converge the calculated quasiparticle energies. In this work, we present a combined non-uniform sub-sampling and analytical integration method that can drastically improve the efficiency of the BZ integration in 2D $GW$ calculations. Our work is distinguished from previous work in that, instead of focusing on the intricate dielectric matrix or the screened Coulomb interaction matrix, we exploit the analytical behavior of various terms of the convolved self-energy $Σ(\mathbf{q})$ in the small $\mathbf{q}$ limit. This method, when combined with another accelerated $GW$ method that we developed recently, can drastically speed-up (by over three orders of magnitude) $GW$ calculations for 2D materials. Our method allows fully converged $GW$ calculations for complex 2D systems at a fraction of computational cost, facilitating future high throughput screening of the quasiparticle properties of 2D semiconductors for various applications. To demonstrate the capability and performance of our new method, we have carried out fully converged $GW$ calculations for monolayer C$_2$N, a recently discovered 2D material with a large unit cell, and investigate its quasiparticle band structure in detail.
