Noise-induced synchronization of Hegselmann-Krause dynamics in full space

The Hegselmann-Krause (HK) model is a typical self-organizing system with local rule dynamics. In spite of its widespread use and numerous extensions, the underlying theory of its synchronization induced by noise still needs to be developed. In its original formulation, as a model first proposed to address opinion dynamics, its state-space was assumed to be bounded, and the theoretical analysis of noise-induced synchronization for this particular situation has been well established. However, when system states are allowed to exist in an unbounded space, mathematical difficulties arise whose theoretical analysis becomes non-trivial and is as such still lacking. In this paper, we completely resolve this problem by exploring the topological properties of HK dynamics and by employing the theory of independent stopping time. The associated result in full statespace provides a solid interpretation of the randomness-induced synchronization of self-organizing systems

Noise-based control of opinion dynamics

Designing feasible control strategies for opinion dynamics in complex social systems has never been an easy task. It requires a control protocol which 1) is not enforced on all individuals in the society, and 2) does not exclusively rely on specific opinion values shared by the social system. Thanks to the recent studies on noise-induced consensus in opinion dynamics, the noise-based intervention strategy has emerged as the only one meeting both of the above requirements, yet its underlying general theory is still lacking. In this paper, we perform rigorous theoretical analysis and simulations of a noise-based control strategy for opinion formation in which only a fraction of individuals is affected by randomly generated noise. We found that irrespective of the number of noise-driven individuals, including the case of only one single noise-affected individual, the system can attain a quasi-consensus in finite time, and the critical noise strength can be obtained. Our results highlight the efficiency of noise-driven mechanisms for the control of complex social dynamics.

Implication of Higgs Precision Measurement on New Physics

Future precision measurements of the Standard Model (SM) parameters at the proposed Z-factories and Higgs factories may have significant impacts on new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). We illustrate this by focusing on the Type-II two Higgs doublet model. A multi-variable global fitting is performed with full one loop contributions to relevant couplings. The Higgs signal strength measurements at proposed Higgs factories can provide strong constraints on new physics and are found to be complementary to the Z-pole measurements.

Implicit Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Boltzmann Equation

An implicit high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is developed to find steady-state solution of rarefied gas flow described by the Boltzmann equation with full collision operator. In the physical space, velocity distribution function is approximated by the piecewise polynomials of degree up to 4, while in the velocity space the fast spectral method is incorporated into the DG to evaluate the collision operator. A specific polynomial approximation for the collision operator is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the fast spectral method by $K$ times, where for two-dimensional problems $K$ is 15 when DG with 4th-order polynomials are used on triangular mesh. Based on the first-order upwind scheme, a sweeping technique is employed to solve the local linear equations resulting from the DG discretization sequentially over spatial elements. This technique can preserve stability of the scheme and requires no nonlinear limiter in solving hypersonic rarefied gas flow when the flow is fully resolved. Moreover, without assembling large sparse linear system, the computational cost in terms of memory and CPU time can be significantly reduced. Five different one/two-dimensional tests including low-speed microscale flows and hypersonic rarefied gas flows are used to verify the proposed approach. Our results show that, DG schemes of different order of approximating polynomial require the same number of iterative steps to obtain the steady-state solution with the same order of accuracy; and the higher order the scheme, fewer spatial elements thus less CPU time is needed. Besides, our method can be faster than the finite difference solver by about one order of magnitude. The produced solutions can be used as benchmark data for assessing the accuracy of other gas kinetic solvers for the Boltzmann equation and gas kinetic models that simplify the Boltzmann collision operator.

Noise-synchronizability of opinion dynamics

With the analysis of noise-induced synchronization of opinion dynamics with bounded confidence (BC), a natural and fundamental question is what opinion structures can be synchronized by noise. In the traditional Hegselmann-Krause (HK) model, each agent examines the opinion values of all the other ones and then choose neighbors to update its own opinion according to the BC scheme. In reality, people are more likely to interchange opinions with only some individuals, resulting in a predetermined local discourse relationship as introduced by the DeGroot model. In this paper, we consider an opinion dynamics that combines the schemes of BC and local discourse topology and investigate its synchronization induced by noise. The new model endows the heterogeneous HK model with a time-varying discourse topology. With the proposed definition of noise-synchronizability, it is shown that the compound noisy model is almost surely noise-synchronizable if and only if the time-varying discourse graph is uniformly jointly connected, taking the noise-induced synchronization of the classical heterogeneous HK model as a special case. As a natural implication, the result for the first time builds the equivalence between the connectivity of discourse graph and the beneficial effect of noise for opinion consensus.

Accurate and efficient computation of the Boltzmann equation for Kramer's problem

In this work, a novel synthetic iteration scheme (SIS) is developed for the LBE to find solutions to Kramer's problem accurately and efficiently: the velocity distribution function is first solved by the conventional iterative scheme, then it is modified such that in each iteration i) the flow velocity is guided by an ordinary differential equation that is asymptotic-preserving at the Navier-Stokes limit and ii) the shear stress is equal to the average shear stress. Based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model, the SIS is assessed to be efficient and accurate. Then we investigate the Kramer's problem for gases interacting through the inverse power-law, shielded Coulomb, and Lennard-Jones potentials, subject to diffuse-specular and Cercignani-Lampis gas-surface boundary conditions. When the tangential momentum accommodation coefficient (TMAC) is not larger than one, the Knudsen layer function is strongly affected by the potential, where its value and width increase with the effective viscosity index of gas molecules. Moreover, the Knudsen layer function exhibits similarities among different values of TMAC when the intermolecular potential is fixed. For Cercignani-Lampis boundary condition with TMAC larger than one, both the viscous slip coefficient and Knudsen layer function are affected by the intermolecular potential, especially when the "backward" scattering limit is approached. With the asymptotic theory by Jiang and Luo for the singular behavior of the velocity gradient in the vicinity of the solid surface, we find that the whole Knudsen layer function can be well fitted by power series.

New physics implication of Higgs precision measurements

Studying the properties of the Higgs boson can be an important window to explore the physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). In this work, we present studies on the implications of the Higgs precision measurements at future Higgs Factories. We perform a global fit to various Higgs search channels to obtain the 95 % C.L. constraints on the model parameter spaces of Two Higgs Double Model (2HDM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In the 2HDM, we analyze tree level effects as well as one-loop contributions from the heavy Higgs bosons. The strong constraints on $\cos(β-α)$, heavy Higgs masses and their mass splitting are complementary to direct search of the LHC as well as possible future Z pole precision measurements. For the MSSM, we study both the Higgs couplings and mass precisions. The constraints on the CP-odd Higgs mass $m_A$ and stop mass scale $m_{SUSY}$ can be complementary to the direct search of HL-LHC. We also compare the sensitivity of various future Higgs factories, namely Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), Future Circular Collider (FCC)-ee and International Linear Collider (ILC).

High-Order Implicit Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Boltzmann Equation

The high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method combining with an implicit iterative scheme is used to find the steady-state solution of the Boltzmann equation with full collision integral on two-dimensional triangular meshes. The velocity distribution function and its trace are approximated in the piecewise polynomial space of degree up to 4. The fast spectral method (FSM) is incorporated into the DG discretization to evaluate the collision operator. Specific polynomial approximation is proposed for the collision term to reduce the computational cost. The proposed scheme is proved to be accurate and efficient.

Future prospects of mass-degenerate Higgs bosons in the $CP$-conserving two-Higgs-doublet model

The scenario of two mass-degenerate Higgs bosons within the general two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) is revisited. We focus on the global picture when two $CP$-even Higgs bosons of $h$ and $H$ are nearly mass-degenerate. A global fit to the signal strength of the 125 GeV Higgs measured at the LHC is performed. Based on the best-fit result of the 2HDM mixing angles $(α,β)$, theoretical constraints, charged and $CP$-odd Higgs boson direct search constraints and the electroweak precision constraints are imposed to the 2HDM parameter space. We present the signal predictions of the $(4b\,, 2b\,2γ)$ channels for the benchmark models at the LHC 14 TeV runs. We also study the direct Higgs boson pair productions at the LHC, and the Z-associated Higgs boson pair production search at the ILC 500 GeV runs, as well as the indirect probes at the CEPC 250 GeV run. We find that the mass-degenerate Higgs boson scenario in the Type-II 2HDM can be fully probed by these future experimental searches.

A high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method with fast convergence to steady-state solutions of the gas kinetic equation

The mass flow rate of Poiseuille flow of rarefied gas through long ducts of two-dimensional cross-sections with arbitrary shape are critical in the pore-network modeling of gas transport in porous media. In this paper, for the first time, the high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method is used to find the steady-state solution of the linearized Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation on two-dimensional triangular meshes. The velocity distribution function and its traces are approximated in the piecewise polynomial space (of degree up to 4) on the triangular meshes and the mesh skeletons, respectively. By employing a numerical flux that is derived from the first-order upwind scheme and imposing its continuity on the mesh skeletons, global systems for unknown traces are obtained with a few coupled degrees of freedom. To achieve fast convergence to the steady-state solution, a diffusion-type equation for flow velocity that is asymptotic-preserving into the fluid dynamic limit is solved by the HDG simultaneously, on the same meshes. The proposed HDG-synthetic iterative scheme is proved to be accurate and efficient. Specifically, for flows in the near-continuum regime, numerical simulations have shown that, to achieve the same level of accuracy, our scheme could be faster than the conventional iterative scheme by two orders of magnitude, while it is faster than the synthetic iterative scheme based on the finite difference discretization in the spatial space by one order of magnitude. The HDG-synthetic iterative scheme is ready to be extended to simulate rarefied gas mixtures and the Boltzmann collision operator.

Ionic Modulation of Interfacial Magnetism through Electrostatic Doping in Pt/YIG bilayer heterostructure

Voltage modulation of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with compactness, high speed response, energy efficiency and both practical/theoretical siginificances can be widely applied to various YIG based spintronics such as spin Hall, spin pumping, spin Seeback effects. Here we initial an ionic modulation of interfacial magnetism process on YIG/Pt bilayer heterostructures, where the Pt capping would influence the ferromagnetic (FMR) field position significantly, and realize a significant magnetism enhancement in bilayer system. A large voltage induced FMR field shifts of 690 Oe has been achieved in YIG (13 nm)/Pt (3 nm) multilayer heterostructures under a small voltage bias of 4.5 V. The remarkable ME tunability comes from voltage induced extra FM ordering in Pt metal layer near the Pt/YIG interface. The first-principle theoretical simulation reveal that the electrostatic doping induced Pt5+ ions have strong magnetic ordering due to uncompensated d orbit electrons. The large voltage control of FMR change pave a foundation towards novel voltage tunable YIG based spintronics.

Search for $W^{\prime}$ signal in single top quark production at LHC

The heavy charged gauge bosons were proposed in the theories beyond standard model. We explore the discovery potential for $W'\to t\bar{b}$ with top quark semi-leptonic decay at the LHC. We concentrate on the new physics signal search with the deviation from the standard model prediction if the resonance peak of $W'$ can not be observed directly. The events of signal with two jets plus one charged lepton and missing energy are simulated together with the dominant standard model backgrounds. In this paper, it is found that suitable cuts on the kinematic observables can effectively suppress the standard model backgrounds, so that it is possible to search for $W'$ signal at the LHC with its mass less than 6.6 TeV.

Observations of Electron-driven Evaporation during a Flare Precursor

We investigate the relationship between the blue shifts of a hot emission line and the nonthermal emissions in microwave and hard X-ray (HXR) wavelengths during the precursor of a solar flare on 2014 October 27. The flare precursor is identified as a small but well-developed peak in soft X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet passbands before the GOES flare onset, which is accompanied by a pronounced burst in microwave 17 & 34 GHz and HXR 25-50 keV. The slit of Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) stays at one ribbon-like transient during the flare precursor, where shows visible nonthermal emissions in NoRH and RHESSI images. The IRIS spectroscopic observations show that the hot line of Fe XXI 1354.09 A (logT ~ 7.05) displays blue shifts, while the cool line of Si IV 1402.77 A (logT ~ 4.8) exhibits red shifts. The blue shifts and red shifts are well correlated to each other, indicative of an explosive chromospheric evaporation during the flare precursor particularly combining with a high nonthermal energy flux and a short characteristic timescale. In addition, the blue shifts of Fe XXI 1354.09 A are well correlated with the microwave and HXR emissions, implying that the explosive chromospheric evaporation during the flare precursor is driven by nonthermal electrons.

Robust Fragmentation Modeling of Hegselmann-Krause-Type Dynamics

In opinion dynamics, how to model the enduring fragmentation phenomenon (disagreement, cleavage, and polarization) of social opinions has long possessed a central position. It is widely known that the confidence-based opinion dynamics provide an acceptant mechanism to produce fragmentation phenomenon. In this study, taking the famous confidence-based Hegselmann-Krause (HK) model, we examine the robustness of the fragmentation coming from HK dynamics and its variations with prejudiced and stubborn agents against random noise. Prior to possible insightful explanations, the theoretical results in this paper explicitly reveal that the well-appearing fragmentation of HK dynamics and its homogeneous variations finally vanishes in the presence of arbitrarily tiny noise, while only the HK model with heterogenous prejudices displays a solid cleavage in noisy environment.

Strong constraints of LUX-2016 results on the natural NMSSM

Given the fact that the relatively light Higgsino mass $μ$ favored in natural supersymmetry usually results in a sizable scattering cross section between the neutralino dark matter and the nucleon, we study the impact of the recently updated direct detection bounds from LUX experiment, including both Spin Independent (SI) and Spin Dependent (SD) measurements, on the parameter space of natural Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (nNMSSM). Different from the common impression that the SI bound is stronger than the SD one, we find that the SD bound is complementary to the SI bound and in some cases much more powerful than the latter in limiting the nNMSSM scenarios. After considering the LUX results, nNMSSM is severely limited, e.g. for the peculiar scenarios of the NMSSM where the next-to-lightest CP-even Higgs corresponds to the $125 {\rm GeV}$ Higgs boson discovered at the LHC, the samples obtained in our random scan are excluded by more than $85\%$. By contrast, the monojet search at the LHC Run-I can not exclude any sample of nNMSSM. We also investigate the current status of nNMSSM and conclude that, although the parameter points with low fine tuning are still attainable, they are distributed in some isolated parameter islands which are difficult to get. Future dark matter direct search experiments such as XENON-1T will provide a better test of nNMSSM.

Doppler shift oscillations from a hot line observed by IRIS

We present a detailed investigation of the Doppler shift oscillations in a hot loop during an M7.1 flare on 2014 October 27 observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. The periodic oscillations are observed in the Doppler shift of Fe XXI 1354.09 A (logT~7.05), and the dominant period is about 3.1 minutes. However, such 3.1-min oscillations are not found in the line-integrated intensity of Fe XXI 1354.09 A, AIA EUV fluxes, or microwave emissions. SDO/AIA and Hinode/XRT imaging observations indicate that the Doppler shift oscillations locate at the hot loop-top region (> 11MK). Moreover, the differential emission measure (DEM) results show that the temperature is increasing rapidly when the Doppler shift oscillates, but the number density does not exhibit the corresponding increases nor oscillations, implying that the flare loop is likely to oscillate in an incompressible mode. All these facts suggest that the Doppler shift oscillations at the shorter period are most likely the standing kink oscillations in a flare loop. Meanwhile, a longer period of about 10 minutes is identified in the time series of Doppler shift and line-integrated intensity, GOES SXR fluxes and AIA EUV light curves, indicating the periodic energy release in this flare, which may be caused by a slow mode wave.

Learning from Higgs Physics at Future Higgs Factories

Future Higgs factories can reach impressive precision on Higgs property measurements. In this paper, instead of conventional focus of Higgs precision in certain interaction bases, we explored its sensitivity to new physics models at the electron-positron colliders. In particular, we studied two categories of new physics models, Standard Model (SM) with a real scalar singlet extension, and Two Higgs Double Model (2HDM) as examples of weakly-interacting models, Minimal Composite Higgs Model (MCHM) and three typical patterns of the more general operator counting for strong interacting models as examples of strong dynamics. We performed a global fit to various Higgs search channels to obtain the 95% C.L. constraints on the model parameter space. In the SM with a singlet extension, we obtained the limits on the singlet-doublet mixing angle sin(theta), as well as the more general Wilson coefficients of the induced higher dimensional operators. In the 2HDM, we analyzed tree level effects in tan(beta) vs. cos(beta-alpha) plane, as well as the one-loop contributions from the heavy Higgs bosons in the alignment limit to obtain the constraints on heavy Higgs masses for different types of 2HDM. In strong dynamics models, we obtained lower limits on the strong dynamics scale. In addition, once deviations of Higgs couplings are observed, they can be used to distinguish different models. We also compared the sensitivity of various future Higgs factories, namely Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), Future Circular Collider (FCC)-ee and International Linear Collider (ILC).

New Optimal Binary Sequences with Period $4p$ via Interleaving Ding-Helleseth-Lam Sequences

Binary sequences with optimal autocorrelation play important roles in radar, communication, and cryptography. Finding new binary sequences with optimal autocorrelation has been an interesting research topic in sequence design. Ding-Helleseth-Lam sequences are such a class of binary sequences of period $p$, where $p$ is an odd prime with $p\equiv 1(\bmod~4)$. The objective of this letter is to present a construction of binary sequences of period $4p$ via interleaving four suitable Ding-Helleseth-Lam sequences. This construction generates new binary sequences with optimal autocorrelation which can not be produced by earlier ones.
