The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

Comparative Studies of 2HDMs under the Higgs Boson Precision Measurements

We perform comparative studies for four types of the two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) under the precision measurements of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs observables at the proposed Higgs factories. We explore the discovery potential based on the hypothetical deviations in the precision data for the 2HDMs up to one-loop level. We find $5σ$ observability from the $χ^2$ fitting in a significant theory parameter space at future Higgs factories. For the Type-I 2HDM, regions with $\cos(β-α)\lesssim -0.1$ or $\cos(β-α)\gtrsim 0.08$ are discoverable at more than $5σ$ level. For the other three types of 2HDMs, the $5σ$ region is even bigger: $|\cos(β-α)|\gtrsim 0.02$ for $\tanβ\sim 1$. At small and large values of $\tanβ$, the region in $\cos(β-α)$ is further tightened. We examine the extent to which the different 2HDM theories may be distinguishable from one to the other at the $95\%$ Confidence Level with four benchmark points as case studies. We show that a large part of the parameter space of the other types of 2HDMs can be distinguished from the benchmark points of the target model. The impacts of loop corrections are found to be significant in certain parameter regions.

Precision Higgs Couplings in Neutral Naturalness Models: an Effective Field Theory Approach

The Higgs sector in neutral naturalness models provides a portal to the hidden sectors, and thus measurements of Higgs couplings at current and future colliders play a central role in constraining the parameter space of the model. We investigate a class of neutral naturalness models, in which the Higgs boson is a pseudo-Goldstone boson from the universal SO(N)/SO(N-1) coset structure. Integrating out the radial mode from the spontaneous global symmetry breaking, we obtain various dimension-six operators in the Standard Model effective field theory, and calculate the low energy Higgs effective potential with radiative corrections included. We perform a chi-square fit to the Higgs coupling precision measurements at current and future colliders and show that the new physics scale could be explored up to 2.7 (2.8) TeV without (with) the Higgs invisible decay channels at future Higgs factories.

Minimal 4D Composite Higgs Models Under Current LHC Constraints

We present preliminary results of the first convergent global fits of several minimal composite Higgs models. Our fits are performed using the differential evolution optimisation package $\texttt{Diver}$. A variety of physical constraints are taken into account, including a wide range of exclusion bounds on heavy resonance production from Run 2 of the LHC. As a by-product of the fits, we analyse the collider phenomenology of the lightest new up-type and down-type resonances in the viable regions of our models, finding some low-mass resonances that can be probed in future collider searches.

Exploring the 2HDM with Global Fits in $\texttt{GAMBIT}$

In this work, we present preliminary results of a global fit of the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) with the tool $\texttt{GAMBIT}$. Our study includes various constraints, including the theoretical constraints (unitarity, perturbativity and vacuum stability), Higgs searches at colliders, electroweak physics and flavour constraints. With the latest experimental results, our results not only confirm past studies but also go further in probing the model. We find, for example, that the measurements of $B\rightarrow K^*μ^+μ^-$ angular observables cannot be explained in the type-II 2HDM.

Analyses of residual accelerations for TianQin based on the global MHD simulation

TianQin is a proposed space-based gravitational wave observatory. It is designed to detect the gravitational wave signals in the frequency range of 0.1 mHz -- 1 Hz. At a geocentric distance of $10^5$ km, the plasma in the earth magnetosphere will contribute as the main source of environmental noises. Here, we analyze the acceleration noises that are caused by the magnetic field of space plasma for the test mass of TianQin. The real solar wind data observed by the Advanced Composition Explorer are taken as the input of the magnetohydrodynamic simulation. The Space Weather Modeling Framework is used to simulate the global magnetosphere of the earth, from which we obtain the plasma and magnetic field parameters on the detector's orbits. We calculate the time series of the residual accelerations and the corresponding amplitude spectral densities on these orbit configurations. We find that the residual acceleration produced by the interaction between the TM's magnetic moment induced by the space magnetic field and the spacecraft magnetic field ($\bm{a}_{\rm M1}$) is the dominant term, which can approach $10^{-15}$ m/s$^2$/Hz$^{1/2}$ at $f \approx$ 0.2 mHz for the nominal values of the magnetic susceptibility ($χ_{\rm m} = 10^{-5}$) and the magnetic shielding factor ($ξ_{\rm m} = 10$) of the test mass. The ratios between the amplitude spectral density of the acceleration noise caused by the space magnetic field and the preliminary goal of the inertial sensor are 0.38 and 0.08 at 1 mHz and 10 mHz, respectively. We discuss the further reduction of this acceleration noise by decreasing $χ_{\rm m}$ and/or increasing $ξ_{\rm m}$ in the future instrumentation development for TianQin.

Preflare very long-periodic pulsations observed in Halpha emission before the onset of a solar flare

Very long-periodic pulsations during preflare phases (preflare-VLPs) have been detected in the full-disk solar soft X-Ray (SXR) flux (see Tan et al. 2016). They may be regarded as precursors to solar flares and may help us better understand the trigger mechanism of solar flares. In this letter, we report a preflare-VLP event before the onset of an M1.1 circular-ribbon flare on 2015 October 16. It was simultaneously observed in Halpha, SXR, and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths, which were recorded by the NVST, GOES, EVE, and AIA respectively. The preflare-VLP is identified as the repeat and quasi-periodic pulses in light curves during preflare phase, which might be modulated by LRC-circuit oscillation in the current-carrying plasma loop. The quasi-periodicity can be determined from the Fourier power spectrum with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)-based Bayesian (e.g., Liang et al. 2020), such as ~9.3 minutes. We present the first report of a preflare-VLP event in the local Halpha line and EUV wavelength, which could be considered a precursor of a solar flare. This finding should therefore prove useful for the prediction of solar flares, especially for powerful flares.

An ultra-long and quite thin coronal loop without significant expansion

Context. Coronal loops are the basic building blocks of the solar corona, which are related to the mass supply and heating of solar plasmas in the corona. However, their fundamental magnetic structures are still not well understood. Most coronal loops do not expand significantly, whereas the diverging magnetic field would have an expansion factor of about 5-10 over one pressure scale height. Aims. In this study, we investigate a unique coronal loop with a roughly constant cross section, it is ultra long and quite thin. A coronal loop model with magnetic helicity is presented to explain the small expansion of the loop width. Methods. This coronal loop was predominantly detectable in the 171 A channel of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). Then, the local magnetic field line was extrapolated by a Potential-Field-Source-Surface model. Finally, the differential emission measure analysis made from six AIA bandpasses was applied to obtain the thermal properties of this loop. Results. This coronal loop has a projected length of roughly 130 Mm, a width of about 1.5 +(-) 0.5 Mm and a lifetime of around 90 minutes. It follows an open magnetic field line. The cross section expanded very little (i.e., 1.5-2.0) along the loop length during its whole lifetime. This loop has a nearly constant temperature at about 0.7 +(-) 0.2 MK, whereas its density exhibits the typical structure of a stratified atmosphere. Conclusions. We use a thin twisted flux tube theory to construct a model for this non-expanding loop, and find that indeed with sufficient twist a coronal loop can attain equilibrium. However, we can not rule out other possibilities such as footpoint heating by small-scale reconnection, elevated scale height by a steady flow along the loop etc.

General synthetic iteration scheme for non-linear gas kinetic simulation of multi-scale rarefied gas flows

The general synthetic iteration scheme (GSIS) is extended to find the steady-state solution of nonlinear gas kinetic equation, removing the long-standing problems of slow convergence and requirement of ultra-fine grids in near-continuum flows. The key ingredients of GSIS are that the gas kinetic equation and macroscopic synthetic equations are tightly coupled, and the constitutive relations in macroscopic synthetic equations explicitly contain Newton's law of shear stress and Fourier's law of heat conduction. The higher-order constitutive relations describing rarefaction effects are calculated from the velocity distribution function, however, their constructions are simpler than our previous work (Su et al. Journal of Computational Physics 407 (2020) 109245) for linearized gas kinetic equations. On the other hand, solutions of macroscopic synthetic equations are used to inform the evolution of gas kinetic equation at the next iteration step. A rigorous linear Fourier stability analysis in periodic system shows that the error decay rate of GSIS can be smaller than 0.5, which means that the deviation to steady-state solution can be reduced by 3 orders of magnitude in 10 iterations. Other important advantages of the GSIS are (i) it does not rely on the specific form of Boltzmann collision operator and (ii) it can be solved by sophisticated techniques in computational fluid dynamics, making it amenable to large scale engineering applications. In this paper, the efficiency and accuracy of GSIS is demonstrated by a number of canonical test cases in rarefied gas dynamics.

Design and Practice of the Regulation in Speed with Flywheel

This paper aims at the teaching contents of "Fluctuation and Regulation in Speed of Machines" for students, explores the effect of the flywheel on the speed regulation of the mechanism system and its influencing factors, designs an experimental device with applied value, and develops a comparatively complete experimental scheme by contrasting experimental principles. Using this experimental device, we can in-depth study of the effect of the flywheel on the speed of different drive shafts, and deepen students' understanding and mastery of knowledge about regulation in speed.

Fast convergence and asymptotic preserving of the General Synthetic Iterative Scheme

Recently the general synthetic iteration scheme (GSIS) is proposed to find the steady-state solution of the Boltzmann equation~\cite{SuArXiv2019}, where various numerical simulations have shown that (i) the steady-state solution can be found within dozens of iterations at any Knudsen number $K$, and (ii) the solution is accurate even when the spatial cell size in the bulk region is much larger than the molecular mean free path, i.e. Navier-Stokes solutions are recovered at coarse grids. The first property indicates that the error decay rate between two consecutive iterations decreases to zero with $K$, while the second one implies that the GSIS is asymptotically preserving the Navier-Stokes limit. This paper is dedicated to the rigorous proof of both properties.

Convergence Properties of the Heterogeneous Deffuant-Weisbuch Model

The Deffuant-Weisbuch (DW) model is a bounded-confidence opinion dynamics model that has attracted much recent interest. Despite its simplicity and appeal, the DW model has proved technically hard to analyze and its most basic convergence properties, easy to observe numerically, are only conjectures. This paper solves the convergence problem for the heterogeneous DW model with the weighting factor not less than $1/2$. We establish that, for any positive confidence bounds and initial values, the opinion of each agent will converge to a limit value almost surely, and the convergence rate is exponential in mean square. Moreover, we show that the limiting opinions of any two agents either are the same or have a distance larger than the confidence bounds of the two agents. Finally, we provide some sufficient conditions for the heterogeneous DW model to reach consensus.

Heterogeneous Hegselmann-Krause Dynamics with Environment and Communication Noise

The Hegselmann-Krause (HK) model is a wellknown opinion dynamics, attracting a significant amount of interest from a number of fields. However, the heterogeneous HK model is difficult to analyze - even the most basic property of convergence is still open to prove. For the first time, this paper takes into consideration heterogeneous HK models with environment or communication noise. Under environment noise, it has been revealed that the heterogeneous HK model with or without global information has a phase transition for the upper limit of the maximum opinion difference, and has a critical noise amplitude depending on the minimal confidence threshold for quasi-synchronization. In addition, the convergence time to the quasi-synchronization is bounded by a negative exponential distribution. The heterogeneous HK model with global information and communication noise is also analyzed. Finally, for the basic HK model with communication noise, we show that the heterogeneous case exhibits a different behavior regarding quasi-synchronization from the homogenous case. Interestingly, raising the confidence thresholds of constituent agents may break quasi-synchronization. Our results reveal that the heterogeneity of individuals is harmful to synchronization, which may be the reason why the synchronization of opinions is hard to reach in reality, even within that of a small group.

Probing loop effects in wrong-sign Yukawa region of 2HDM

In the framework of 2HDM, we explore the wrong-sign Yukawa region with direct and indirect searches up to one-loop level. The direct searches include the latest $H/A \to f\bar f, VV, Vh, hh$ reports at current LHC, and the study of indirect Higgs precision measurements works with current LHC, future HL-LHC and CEPC. At tree level of Type-II 2HDM, for degenerate heavy Higgs mass $m_A=m_H=m_{H^\pm}<800$ GeV, the wrong-sign Yukawa regions are excluded largely except for the tiny allowed region around $\cos(β-α)\in(0.2,0.3)$ under the combined constraints. The excluded region is also nearly independent of parameter $m_{12}$ or $λv^2=m_A^2-m_{12}^2/(\sin β\cos β)$. The situation changes a lot after including loop corrections to the indirect searches, for example $m_A=800 $ GeV, the region with $λv^2<0$ will be stronger constrained to be totally excluded. Whilst $λv^2>0$ would get larger survived wrong-sign region, such as $\cos(β-α) \in (0,0.3)$ for $\sqrt{λv^2}=400$ GeV, under combined restrictions.

Exploring the low $\tanβ$ region of two Higgs doublet models at the LHC

Current interpretations of the LHC results on two Higgs doublet models (2HDM) underestimate the sensitivity due to neglecting higher order effects. In this work, we revisit the impact of these effects using the current cross-section times branching ratio limits of the $A\to hZ, H \to VV$ and $H\to hh$ channels. With a degenerate heavy Higgs mass $m_Φ$, we find that the LHC searches gain sensitivity to the small $\tanβ$ region after including loop corrections, even close to $\cos(β-α)=0$ which is not reachable at tree level for all types of 2HDM. For a benchmark point with $m_Φ=300$ GeV, $\tanβ<1.8(1.2)$ can be probed for the Type-I(II) 2HDM model for $\cos(β-α)=0$. When the deviation from $\cos(β-α)=0$ is larger, the region for which current searches have exclusion potential becomes larger.

Can we find steady-state solutions to multiscale rarefied gas flows within dozens of iterations?

One of the central problems in the study of rarefied gas dynamics is to find the steady-state solution of the Boltzmann equation quickly. When the Knudsen number is large, i.e. the system is highly rarefied, the conventional iteration scheme can lead to convergence within a few iterations. However, when the Knudsen number is small, i.e. the flow falls in the near-continuum regime, hundreds of thousands iterations are needed, and yet the "converged" solutions are prone to be contaminated by accumulated error and large numerical dissipation. Recently, based on the gas kinetic models, the implicit unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS) and its variants have significantly reduced the iterations in the near-continuum flow regime, but still much higher than that of the highly rarefied gas flows. In this paper, we put forward a general synthetic iteration scheme (GSIS) to find the steady-state solutions of general rarefied gas flows within dozens of iterations at any Knudsen number. As the GSIS does not rely on the specific kinetic model/collision operator, it can be naturally extended to quickly find converged solutions for mixture flows and even flows involving chemical reactions. These two superior advantages are also expected to accelerate the slow convergence in simulation of near-continuum flows via the direct simulation Monte Carlo method and its low-variance version.

Voltage Control of Perpendicular Exchange Bias in Multiferroic Heterostructures

Perpendicular exchange bias (EB), which combines the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the ferromagnetic (FM) - antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling, is extremely important in the high-density AFM spintronics. However, the effective modulation of EB remains challenging, since the alternant spins at the AFM/FM interface are strongly pinned by the AFM layer. Voltage tuning of EB through the magnetoelectric coupling provides a potential way to achieve a rapid magnetization switching in an energy-efficient manner. Nevertheless, the interfacial strain mediation of perpendicular EB induced by E-field remains unexplored. In this work, we obtain perpendicular EB nanostructure by room-temperature fabrication process, and demonstrate the voltage tunable perpendicular EB in Pt/IrMn/(Co/Pt)2/Ta/(011) Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 multiferroic heterostructure. To enhance the voltage control effect on perpendicular EB, we further investigate both strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling and ionic liquid gating method in the thinned EB system with the structure of Pt/IrMn/Co/Pt/Ta. As a result, the voltage induced lattice distortion effectively transmits to the AFM/FM interface, while the charge accumulation in gating method generates a relatively large hysteresis loop offset that has not been observed before at room temperature. The voltage manipulation of perpendicular EB at room temperature provides new possibilities towards novel AFM devices and memories with great energy-efficiency and ultra-high density.

Type-II 2HDM under the Precision Measurements at the $Z$-pole and a Higgs Factory

Future precision measurements of the Standard Model (SM) parameters at the proposed $Z$-factories and Higgs factories may have significant impacts on new physics beyond the Standard Model in the electroweak sector. We illustrate this by focusing on the Type-II two Higgs doublet model (Type-II 2HDM). The contributions from the heavy Higgs bosons at the tree-level and at the one-loop level are included in a full model parameter space. We perform a multiple variable global fit and study the extent to which the parameters of non-alignment and non-degenerate masses can be probed by the precision measurements. We find that the allowed parameter ranges are tightly constrained by the future Higgs precision measurements, especially for small and large values of $\tanβ$. Indirect limits on the masses of heavy Higgs can be obtained, which can be complementary to the direct searches of the heavy Higgs bosons at hadron colliders. We also find that the expected accuracies at the $Z$-pole and at a Higgs factory are quite complementary in constraining mass splittings of heavy Higgs bosons. The typical results are $|\cos(β-α)| < 0.008, |Δm_Φ| < 200\ {\rm GeV}$, and $\tanβ\sim 0.2 - 5$. The reaches from CEPC, FCC-ee and ILC are also compared, for both Higgs and $Z$-pole precision measurements.
