Pressure Balance and Energy Budget of the Nuclear Superbubble of NGC 3079

Superbubbles in the nuclear region of galaxies could be produced by the AGN or nuclear starburst via different driving forces. We report analysis of the multi-wavelength data of the kpc-scale nuclear superbubble in NGC 3079, in order to probe the mechanisms driving the expansion of the superbubble. Based on the Chandra X-ray observations, we derive the hot gas thermal pressure inside the bubble, which is about one order of magnitude higher than that of the warm ionized gas traced by optical lines. We derive a [C II]-based star formation rate of ${\rm SFR}\sim1.3\rm~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ from the nuclear region using the SOFIA/FIFI-LS observation. This SFR infers a radiation pressure toward the bubble shells much lower than the thermal pressure of the gases. The VLA radio image infers a magnetic pressure at the northeast cap above the superbubble less than the thermal pressure of the hot gas enclosed in the bubble, but has a clearly larger extension. The magnetic field may thus still help to reconcile the expansion of the bubble. The observed thermal energy of the hot gas enclosed in the bubble requires an energy injection rate of $\gtrsim10^{42}\rm~ergs~s^{-1}$ within the bubble's dynamical age, which is probably larger than the power provided by the current nuclear starburst and the parsec-scale jet. If this is true, stronger past AGN activity may provide an alternative energy source to drive the observed bubble expansion.

AIGIQA-20K: A Large Database for AI-Generated Image Quality Assessment

With the rapid advancements in AI-Generated Content (AIGC), AI-Generated Images (AIGIs) have been widely applied in entertainment, education, and social media. However, due to the significant variance in quality among different AIGIs, there is an urgent need for models that consistently match human subjective ratings. To address this issue, we organized a challenge towards AIGC quality assessment on NTIRE 2024 that extensively considers 15 popular generative models, utilizing dynamic hyper-parameters (including classifier-free guidance, iteration epochs, and output image resolution), and gather subjective scores that consider perceptual quality and text-to-image alignment altogether comprehensively involving 21 subjects. This approach culminates in the creation of the largest fine-grained AIGI subjective quality database to date with 20,000 AIGIs and 420,000 subjective ratings, known as AIGIQA-20K. Furthermore, we conduct benchmark experiments on this database to assess the correspondence between 16 mainstream AIGI quality models and human perception. We anticipate that this large-scale quality database will inspire robust quality indicators for AIGIs and propel the evolution of AIGC for vision. The database is released on https://www.modelscope.cn/datasets/lcysyzxdxc/AIGCQA-30K-Image.

Analysis of Video Quality Datasets via Design of Minimalistic Video Quality Models

Blind video quality assessment (BVQA) plays an indispensable role in monitoring and improving the end-users' viewing experience in various real-world video-enabled media applications. As an experimental field, the improvements of BVQA models have been measured primarily on a few human-rated VQA datasets. Thus, it is crucial to gain a better understanding of existing VQA datasets in order to properly evaluate the current progress in BVQA. Towards this goal, we conduct a first-of-its-kind computational analysis of VQA datasets via designing minimalistic BVQA models. By minimalistic, we restrict our family of BVQA models to build only upon basic blocks: a video preprocessor (for aggressive spatiotemporal downsampling), a spatial quality analyzer, an optional temporal quality analyzer, and a quality regressor, all with the simplest possible instantiations. By comparing the quality prediction performance of different model variants on eight VQA datasets with realistic distortions, we find that nearly all datasets suffer from the easy dataset problem of varying severity, some of which even admit blind image quality assessment (BIQA) solutions. We additionally justify our claims by contrasting our model generalizability on these VQA datasets, and by ablating a dizzying set of BVQA design choices related to the basic building blocks. Our results cast doubt on the current progress in BVQA, and meanwhile shed light on good practices of constructing next-generation VQA datasets and models.

An equivalent inequality for the Riemann hypothesis

We present a purely analytical inequality which is equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis (RH). The proof of the equivalence is based on a representation of the modulus of the Riemann $ξ$ function. As the first step to analyze the inequality, we consider polynomial approximations. We also show that the RH is equivalent to the statement that some wave functions constructed using the Brownian motion never evolve into perfectly distinguishable states.

OST: Refining Text Knowledge with Optimal Spatio-Temporal Descriptor for General Video Recognition

Due to the resource-intensive nature of training vision-language models on expansive video data, a majority of studies have centered on adapting pre-trained image-language models to the video domain. Dominant pipelines propose to tackle the visual discrepancies with additional temporal learners while overlooking the substantial discrepancy for web-scaled descriptive narratives and concise action category names, leading to less distinct semantic space and potential performance limitations. In this work, we prioritize the refinement of text knowledge to facilitate generalizable video recognition. To address the limitations of the less distinct semantic space of category names, we prompt a large language model (LLM) to augment action class names into Spatio-Temporal Descriptors thus bridging the textual discrepancy and serving as a knowledge base for general recognition. Moreover, to assign the best descriptors with different video instances, we propose Optimal Descriptor Solver, forming the video recognition problem as solving the optimal matching flow across frame-level representations and descriptors. Comprehensive evaluations in zero-shot, few-shot, and fully supervised video recognition highlight the effectiveness of our approach. Our best model achieves a state-of-the-art zero-shot accuracy of 75.1% on Kinetics-600.

Fixed-Point Algorithms for Solving the Critical Value and Upper Tail Quantile of Kuiper's Statistics

Kuiper's statistic is a good measure for the difference of ideal distribution and empirical distribution in the goodness-of-fit test. However, it is a challenging problem to solve the critical value and upper tail quantile, or simply Kuiper pair, of Kuiper's statistics due to the difficulties of solving the nonlinear equation and reasonable approximation of infinite series. In this work, the contributions lie in three perspectives: firstly, the second order approximation for the infinite series of the cumulative distribution of the critical value is used to achieve higher precision; secondly, the principles and fixed-point algorithms for solving the Kuiper pair are presented with details; finally, finally, a mistake about the critical value $c^α_n$ for $(α, n)=(0.01,30)$ in Kuiper's distribution table has been labeled and corrected where $n$ is the sample capacity and $α$ is the upper tail quantile. The algorithms are verified and validated by comparing with the table provided by Kuiper. The methods and algorithms proposed are enlightening and worth of introducing to the college students, computer programmers, engineers, experimental psychologists and so on.

Decays of $1^{-+}$ Charmoniumlike Hybrid

By extracting the transition amplitudes, we give the first lattice QCD prediction of the two-body decay partial widths of the $1^{-+}$ charmoniumlike hybrid $η_{c1}$. Given the calculated mass value $m_{η_{c1}}=4.329(36)$ GeV, the $η_{c1}$ decay is dominated by the open charm modes $D_1\bar{D}$, $D^*\bar{D}$ and $D^*\bar{D}^*$ with partial widths of $258(133)$ MeV, $88(18)$ MeV and $150(118)$ MeV, respectively. The coupling of $η_{c1}$ to $χ_{c1}$ plus a flavor singlet pseudoscalar is not small, but $χ_{c1}η$ decay is suppressed by the small $η-η'$ mixing angle. The partial width of $η_{c1}\to η_cη'$ is estimated to be around 1 MeV. We suggest experiments to search for $η_{c1}$ in the $P$-wave $D^*\bar{D}$ and $D^*\bar{D}^*$ systems. Especially, the polarization of $D^*\bar{D}^*$ can be used to distinguish the $1^{-+}$ product (total spin $S=1$) from $1^{--}$ products ($S=0$).

Form factor for Dalitz decays from $J/ψ$ to light pseudoscalars

We calculate the form factor $M(q^2)$ for the Dalitz decay $J/ψ\to γ^*(q^2)η_{(N_f=1)}$ with $η_{(N_f)}$ being the SU($N_f$) flavor singlet pseudoscalar meson. The difference among the partial widths $Γ(J/ψ\to γη_{(N_f)})$ at different $N_f$ can be attributed in part to the $\mathbf{U}_A(1)$ anomaly that induces a $N_f$ scaling. $M(q^2)$'s in $N_f=1,2$ are both well described by the single pole model $M(q^2)=M(0)/(1-q^2/Λ^2)$. Combined with the known experimental results of the Dalitz decays $J/ψ\to Pe^+e^-$, the pseudoscalar mass $m_P$ dependence of the pole parameter $Λ$ is approximated by $Λ(m_P^2)=Λ_1(1-m_P^2/Λ_2^2)$ with $Λ_1=2.64(4)~\mathrm{GeV}$ and $Λ_2=2.97(33)~\mathrm{GeV}$. These results provide inputs for future theoretical and experimental studies on the Dalitz decays $J/ψ\to Pe^+e^-$.

A resource-constrained stochastic scheduling algorithm for homeless street outreach and gleaning edible food

We developed a common algorithmic solution addressing the problem of resource-constrained outreach encountered by social change organizations with different missions and operations: Breaking Ground -- an organization that helps individuals experiencing homelessness in New York transition to permanent housing and Leket -- the national food bank of Israel that rescues food from farms and elsewhere to feed the hungry. Specifically, we developed an estimation and optimization approach for partially-observed episodic restless bandits under $k$-step transitions. The results show that our Thompson sampling with Markov chain recovery (via Stein variational gradient descent) algorithm significantly outperforms baselines for the problems of both organizations. We carried out this work in a prospective manner with the express goal of devising a flexible-enough but also useful-enough solution that can help overcome a lack of sustainable impact in data science for social good.

SoK: Secure Human-centered Wireless Sensing

Human-centered wireless sensing (HCWS) aims to understand the fine-grained environment and activities of a human using the diverse wireless signals around him/her. While the sensed information about a human can be used for many good purposes such as enhancing life quality, an adversary can also abuse it to steal private information about the human (e.g., location and person's identity). However, the literature lacks a systematic understanding of the privacy vulnerabilities of wireless sensing and the defenses against them, resulting in the privacy-compromising HCWS design. In this work, we aim to bridge this gap to achieve the vision of secure human-centered wireless sensing. First, we propose a signal processing pipeline to identify private information leakage and further understand the benefits and tradeoffs of wireless sensing-based inference attacks and defenses. Based on this framework, we present the taxonomy of existing inference attacks and defenses. As a result, we can identify the open challenges and gaps in achieving privacy-preserving human-centered wireless sensing in the era of machine learning and further propose directions for future research in this field.

A chip-integrated comb-based microwave oscillator

Low-noise microwave oscillators are cornerstones for wireless communication, radar and clocks. Optical frequency combs have enabled photonic microwaves with unrivalled noise performance and bandwidth. Emerging interest is to generate microwaves using chip-based frequency combs, namely microcombs. Here, we demonstrate the first, fully integrated, microcomb-based, microwave oscillator chip. The chip, powered by a microelectronic circuit, leverages hybrid integration of a DFB laser, a nonlinear microresonator, and a high-speed photodetector. Each component represents the best of its own class, yet allows large-volume manufacturing with low cost in CMOS foundries. The hybrid chip outputs an ultralow-noise laser of 6.9 Hz linewidth, a microcomb of 10.7 GHz repetition rate, and a 10.7 GHz microwave of 6.3 mHz linewidth -- all three in one entity of 76 mm$^2$ size. The microwave phase noise reaches -75/-105/-130 dBc/Hz at 1/10/100 kHz Fourier offset frequency. Our results can reinvigorate our information society for communication, sensing, timing and precision measurement.

Exploring the Naturalness of AI-Generated Images

The proliferation of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Images (AGIs) has greatly expanded the Image Naturalness Assessment (INA) problem. Different from early definitions that mainly focus on tone-mapped images with limited distortions (e.g., exposure, contrast, and color reproduction), INA on AI-generated images is especially challenging as it has more diverse contents and could be affected by factors from multiple perspectives, including low-level technical distortions and high-level rationality distortions. In this paper, we take the first step to benchmark and assess the visual naturalness of AI-generated images. First, we construct the AI-Generated Image Naturalness (AGIN) database by conducting a large-scale subjective study to collect human opinions on the overall naturalness as well as perceptions from technical and rationality perspectives. AGIN verifies that naturalness is universally and disparately affected by technical and rationality distortions. Second, we propose the Joint Objective Image Naturalness evaluaTor (JOINT), to automatically predict the naturalness of AGIs that aligns human ratings. Specifically, JOINT imitates human reasoning in naturalness evaluation by jointly learning both technical and rationality features. We demonstrate that JOINT significantly outperforms baselines for providing more subjectively consistent results on naturalness assessment.

Reinforcement Learning Based Robust Volt/Var Control in Active Distribution Networks With Imprecisely Known Delay

Active distribution networks (ADNs) incorporating massive photovoltaic (PV) devices encounter challenges of rapid voltage fluctuations and potential violations. Due to the fluctuation and intermittency of PV generation, the state gap, arising from time-inconsistent states and exacerbated by imprecisely known system delays, significantly impacts the accuracy of voltage control. This paper addresses this challenge by introducing a framework for delay adaptive Volt/Var control (VVC) in the presence of imprecisely known system delays to regulate the reactive power of PV inverters. The proposed approach formulates the voltage control, based on predicted system operation states, as a robust VVC problem. It employs sample selection from the state prediction interval to promptly identify the worst-performing system operation state. Furthermore, we leverage the decentralized partially observable Markov decision process (Dec-POMDP) to reformulate the robust VVC problem. We design Multiple Policy Networks and employ Multiple Policy Networks and Reward Shaping-based Multi-agent Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MPNRS-MATD3) algorithm to efficiently address and solve the Dec-POMDP model-based problem. Simulation results show the delay adaption characteristic of our proposed framework, and the MPNRS-MATD3 outperforms other multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithms in robust voltage control.

PresAIse, A Prescriptive AI Solution for Enterprises

Prescriptive AI represents a transformative shift in decision-making, offering causal insights and actionable recommendations. Despite its huge potential, enterprise adoption often faces several challenges. The first challenge is caused by the limitations of observational data for accurate causal inference which is typically a prerequisite for good decision-making. The second pertains to the interpretability of recommendations, which is crucial for enterprise decision-making settings. The third challenge is the silos between data scientists and business users, hindering effective collaboration. This paper outlines an initiative from IBM Research, aiming to address some of these challenges by offering a suite of prescriptive AI solutions. Leveraging insights from various research papers, the solution suite includes scalable causal inference methods, interpretable decision-making approaches, and the integration of large language models (LLMs) to bridge communication gaps via a conversation agent. A proof-of-concept, PresAIse, demonstrates the solutions' potential by enabling non-ML experts to interact with prescriptive AI models via a natural language interface, democratizing advanced analytics for strategic decision-making.

Rhythmic soliton interactions for integrated dual-microcomb spectroscopy

Rotation symmetry of microresonators supports the generation of phase-locked counter-propagating (CP) solitons that can potentially miniaturize dual-comb systems. Realization of these dual-comb compatible solitons in photonic integrated circuits remains a challenge. Here, we synthesized such CP solitons in an integrated silicon nitride microresonator and observed forced soliton oscillation due to rhythmic, time-varying soliton interactions. The interactions result in seconds mutual-coherence passively. Temporal motion in the soliton streams is discerned by measuring a quadratic-scaling frequency noise peaks and an inverse quadratic-scaling microcomb sidebands. By generating a CP soliton trimer to have two synchronized solitons in one of the orbiting directions, we resolve the incapability of measuring two unsynchronized CP soliton dimer pulses by optical cross-correlation, and show CP solitons undergo complex motion trajectory. We further prove that precise dual-comb spectroscopy with an acquisition time as short as 0.6 $μ$s is feasible using these solitons, although the temporal motion limits the dynamic range. Besides revealing soliton interactions with different group velocities, our work propels the realization of photonic integrated dual-comb spectrometers with high passive coherence.

Perceptual Video Quality Assessment: A Survey

Perceptual video quality assessment plays a vital role in the field of video processing due to the existence of quality degradations introduced in various stages of video signal acquisition, compression, transmission and display. With the advancement of internet communication and cloud service technology, video content and traffic are growing exponentially, which further emphasizes the requirement for accurate and rapid assessment of video quality. Therefore, numerous subjective and objective video quality assessment studies have been conducted over the past two decades for both generic videos and specific videos such as streaming, user-generated content (UGC), 3D, virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), high frame rate (HFR), audio-visual, etc. This survey provides an up-to-date and comprehensive review of these video quality assessment studies. Specifically, we first review the subjective video quality assessment methodologies and databases, which are necessary for validating the performance of video quality metrics. Second, the objective video quality assessment algorithms for general purposes are surveyed and concluded according to the methodologies utilized in the quality measures. Third, we overview the objective video quality assessment measures for specific applications and emerging topics. Finally, the performances of the state-of-the-art video quality assessment measures are compared and analyzed. This survey provides a systematic overview of both classical works and recent progresses in the realm of video quality assessment, which can help other researchers quickly access the field and conduct relevant research.

GMS-3DQA: Projection-based Grid Mini-patch Sampling for 3D Model Quality Assessment

Nowadays, most 3D model quality assessment (3DQA) methods have been aimed at improving performance. However, little attention has been paid to the computational cost and inference time required for practical applications. Model-based 3DQA methods extract features directly from the 3D models, which are characterized by their high degree of complexity. As a result, many researchers are inclined towards utilizing projection-based 3DQA methods. Nevertheless, previous projection-based 3DQA methods directly extract features from multi-projections to ensure quality prediction accuracy, which calls for more resource consumption and inevitably leads to inefficiency. Thus in this paper, we address this challenge by proposing a no-reference (NR) projection-based \textit{\underline{G}rid \underline{M}ini-patch \underline{S}ampling \underline{3D} Model \underline{Q}uality \underline{A}ssessment (GMS-3DQA)} method. The projection images are rendered from six perpendicular viewpoints of the 3D model to cover sufficient quality information. To reduce redundancy and inference resources, we propose a multi-projection grid mini-patch sampling strategy (MP-GMS), which samples grid mini-patches from the multi-projections and forms the sampled grid mini-patches into one quality mini-patch map (QMM). The Swin-Transformer tiny backbone is then used to extract quality-aware features from the QMMs. The experimental results show that the proposed GMS-3DQA outperforms existing state-of-the-art NR-3DQA methods on the point cloud quality assessment databases. The efficiency analysis reveals that the proposed GMS-3DQA requires far less computational resources and inference time than other 3DQA competitors. The code will be available at https://github.com/zzc-1998/GMS-3DQA.
