Dual-Propagation-Feature Fusion Enhanced Neural CSI Compression for Massive MIMO

Due to the ability of feature extraction, deep learning (DL)-based methods have been recently applied to channel state information (CSI) compression feedback in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Existing DL-based CSI compression methods are usually effective in extracting a certain type of features in the CSI. However, the CSI usually contains two types of propagation features, i.g., non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation-path feature and dominant propagation-path feature, especially in channel environments with rich scatterers. To fully extract the both propagation features and learn a dual-feature representation for CSI, this paper proposes a dual-feature-fusion neural network (NN), referred to as DuffinNet. The proposed DuffinNet adopts a parallel structure with a convolutional neural network (CNN) and an attention-empowered neural network (ANN) to respectively extract different features in the CSI, and then explores their interplay by a fusion NN. Built upon this proposed DuffinNet, a new encoder-decoder framework is developed, referred to as Duffin-CsiNet, for improving the end-to-end performance of CSI compression and reconstruction. To facilitate the application of Duffin-CsiNet in practice, this paper also presents a two-stage approach for codeword quantization of the CSI feedback. Besides, a transfer learning-based strategy is introduced to improve the generalization of Duffin-CsiNet, which enables the network to be applied to new propagation environments. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed Duffin-CsiNet noticeably outperforms the existing DL-based methods in terms of reconstruction performance, encoder complexity, and network convergence, validating the effectiveness of the proposed dual-feature fusion design.

MLE for the parameters of bivariate interval-valued models

With contemporary data sets becoming too large to analyze the data directly, various forms of aggregated data are becoming common. The original individual data are points, but after aggregation, the observations are interval-valued (e.g.). While some researchers simply analyze the set of averages of the observations by aggregated class, it is easily established that approach ignores much of the information in the original data set. The initial theoretical work for interval-valued data was that of Le-Rademacher and Billard (2011), but those results were limited to estimation of the mean and variance of a single variable only. This article seeks to redress the limitation of their work by deriving the maximum likelihood estimator for the all important covariance statistic, a basic requirement for numerous methodologies, such as regression, principal components, and canonical analyses. Asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established. The Le-Rademacher and Billard results emerge as special cases of our wider derivations.

Improved Instruction Ordering in Recipe-Grounded Conversation

In this paper, we study the task of instructional dialogue and focus on the cooking domain. Analyzing the generated output of the GPT-J model, we reveal that the primary challenge for a recipe-grounded dialog system is how to provide the instructions in the correct order. We hypothesize that this is due to the model's lack of understanding of user intent and inability to track the instruction state (i.e., which step was last instructed). Therefore, we propose to explore two auxiliary subtasks, namely User Intent Detection and Instruction State Tracking, to support Response Generation with improved instruction grounding. Experimenting with our newly collected dataset, ChattyChef, shows that incorporating user intent and instruction state information helps the response generation model mitigate the incorrect order issue. Furthermore, to investigate whether ChatGPT has completely solved this task, we analyze its outputs and find that it also makes mistakes (10.7% of the responses), about half of which are out-of-order instructions. We will release ChattyChef to facilitate further research in this area at: https://github.com/octaviaguo/ChattyChef.

Revisiting non-English Text Simplification: A Unified Multilingual Benchmark

Recent advancements in high-quality, large-scale English resources have pushed the frontier of English Automatic Text Simplification (ATS) research. However, less work has been done on multilingual text simplification due to the lack of a diverse evaluation benchmark that covers complex-simple sentence pairs in many languages. This paper introduces the MultiSim benchmark, a collection of 27 resources in 12 distinct languages containing over 1.7 million complex-simple sentence pairs. This benchmark will encourage research in developing more effective multilingual text simplification models and evaluation metrics. Our experiments using MultiSim with pre-trained multilingual language models reveal exciting performance improvements from multilingual training in non-English settings. We observe strong performance from Russian in zero-shot cross-lingual transfer to low-resource languages. We further show that few-shot prompting with BLOOM-176b achieves comparable quality to reference simplifications outperforming fine-tuned models in most languages. We validate these findings through human evaluation.

GoMORE: Global Model Reuse for Resource-Constrained Wireless Federated Learning

Due to the dynamics of wireless environment and limited bandwidth, wireless federated learning (FL) is challenged by frequent transmission errors and incomplete aggregation from devices. In order to overcome these challenges, we propose a global model reuse strategy (GoMORE) that reuses the outdated global model to replace the local model parameters once a transmission error occurs. We analytically prove that the proposed GoMORE is strictly superior over the existing strategy, especially at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). In addition, based on the derived expression of weight divergence, we further optimize the number of participating devices in the model aggregation to maximize the FL performance with limited communication resources. Numerical results verify that the proposed GoMORE successfully approaches the performance upper bound by an ideal transmission. It also mitigates the negative impact of non-independent and non-identically distributed (non-IID) data while achieving over 5 dB reduction in energy consumption.

Teaching the Pre-trained Model to Generate Simple Texts for Text Simplification

Randomly masking text spans in ordinary texts in the pre-training stage hardly allows models to acquire the ability to generate simple texts. It can hurt the performance of pre-trained models on text simplification tasks. In this paper, we propose a new continued pre-training strategy to teach the pre-trained model to generate simple texts. We continue pre-training BART, a representative model, to obtain SimpleBART. It consistently and significantly improves the results on lexical simplification, sentence simplification, and document-level simplification tasks over BART. At the end, we compare SimpleBART with several representative large language models (LLMs).

Semantic-aware Digital Twin for Metaverse: A Comprehensive Review

To facilitate the deployment of digital twins in Metaverse, the paradigm with semantic awareness has been proposed as a means for enabling accurate and task-oriented information extraction with inherent intelligence. However, this framework requires all devices in the Metaverse environment to be directly linked with the semantic model to enable faithful interpretation of messages. In contrast, this article introduces the digital twin framework, considering a smart industrial application, which enables semantic communication in conjugation with the Metaverse enabling technologies. The fundamentals of this framework are demonstrated on an industrial shopfloor management use case with a digital twin so as to improve its performance through semantic communication. An overview of semantic communication, Metaverse, and digital twins is presented. Integration of these technologies with the basic architecture as well as the impact on future industrial applications is presented. In a nutshell, this article showcases how semantic awareness can be an effective candidate in the implementation of digital twins for Metaverse applications.

Robust Beamforming Design for RIS-aided Cell-free Systems with CSI Uncertainties and Capacity-limited Backhaul

In this paper, we consider the robust beamforming design in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free (CF) system considering the channel state information (CSI) uncertainties of both the direct channels and cascaded channels at the transmitter with capacity-limited backhaul. We jointly optimize the precoding at the access points (APs) and the phase shifts at multiple RISs to maximize the worst-case sum rate of the CF system subject to the constraints of maximum transmit power of APs, unit-modulus phase shifts, limited backhaul capacity, and bounded CSI errors. By applying a series of transformations, the non-smoothness and semi-infinite constraints are tackled in a low-complexity manner that facilitates the design of an alternating optimization (AO)-based iterative algorithm. The proposed algorithm divides the considered problem into two subproblems. For the RIS phase shifts optimization subproblem, we exploit the penalty convex-concave procedure (P-CCP) to obtain a stationary solution and achieve effective initialization. For precoding optimization subproblem, successive convex approximation (SCA) is adopted with a convergence guarantee to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust beamforming design, which achieves superior performance with low complexity. Moreover, the importance of RIS phase shift optimization for robustness and the advantages of distributed RISs in the CF system are further highlighted.

Self-information Domain-based Neural CSI Compression with Feature Coupling

Deep learning (DL)-based channel state information (CSI) feedback methods compressed the CSI matrix by exploiting its delay and angle features straightforwardly, while the measure in terms of information contained in the CSI matrix has rarely been considered. Based on this observation, we introduce self-information as an informative CSI representation from the perspective of information theory, which reflects the amount of information of the original CSI matrix in an explicit way. Then, a novel DL-based network is proposed for temporal CSI compression in the self-information domain, namely SD-CsiNet. The proposed SD-CsiNet projects the raw CSI onto a self-information matrix in the newly-defined self-information domain, extracts both temporal and spatial features of the self-information matrix, and then couples these two features for effective compression. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed SD-CsiNet by exploiting the self-information of CSI. Particularly for compression ratios 1/8 and 1/16, the SD-CsiNet respectively achieves 7.17 dB and 3.68 dB performance gains compared to state-of-the-art methods.

VENUS: A Geometrical Representation for Quantum State Visualization

Visualizations have played a crucial role in helping quantum computing users explore quantum states in various quantum computing applications. Among them, Bloch Sphere is the widely-used visualization for showing quantum states, which leverages angles to represent quantum amplitudes. However, it cannot support the visualization of quantum entanglement and superposition, the two essential properties of quantum computing. To address this issue, we propose VENUS, a novel visualization for quantum state representation. By explicitly correlating 2D geometric shapes based on the math foundation of quantum computing characteristics, VENUS effectively represents quantum amplitudes of both the single qubit and two qubits for quantum entanglement. Also, we use multiple coordinated semicircles to naturally encode probability distribution, making the quantum superposition intuitive to analyze. We conducted two well-designed case studies and an in-depth expert interview to evaluate the usefulness and effectiveness of VENUS. The result shows that VENUS can effectively facilitate the exploration of quantum states for the single qubit and two qubits.

Semi-supervised MIMO Detection Using Cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Network

In this paper, a new semi-supervised deep multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection approach using a cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (CycleGAN) is proposed for communication systems without any prior knowledge of underlying channel distributions. Specifically, we propose the CycleGAN detector by constructing a bidirectional loop of two modified least squares generative adversarial networks (LS-GAN). The forward LS-GAN learns to model the transmission process, while the backward LS-GAN learns to detect the received signals. By optimizing the cycle-consistency of the transmitted and received signals through this loop, the proposed method is trained online and semi-supervisedly using both the pilots and the received payload data. As such, the demand on labelled training dataset is considerably controlled, and thus the overhead is effectively reduced. Numerical results show that the proposed CycleGAN detector achieves better performance in terms of both bit error-rate (BER) and achievable rate than existing semi-blind deep learning (DL) detection methods as well as conventional linear detectors, especially when considering signal distortion due to the nonlinearity of power amplifiers (PA) at the transmitter.

Full-Duplex Communication for ISAC: Joint Beamforming and Power Optimization

Beamforming design has been widely investigated for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems with full-duplex (FD) sensing and half-duplex (HD) communication. To achieve higher spectral efficiency, in this paper, we extend existing ISAC beamforming design by considering the FD capability for both radar and communication. Specifically, we consider an ISAC system, where the BS performs target detection and communicates with multiple downlink users and uplink users reusing the same time and frequency resources. We jointly optimize the downlink dual-functional transmit signal and the uplink receive beamformers at the BS and the transmit power at the uplink users. The problems are formulated under two criteria: power consumption minimization and sum rate maximization. The downlink and uplink transmissions are tightly coupled due to both the desired target echo and the undesired interference received at the BS, making the problems challenging. To handle these issues in both cases, we first determine the optimal receive beamformers, which are derived in closed forms with respect to the BS transmit beamforming and the user transmit power, for radar target detection and uplink communications, respectively. Subsequently, we invoke these results to obtain equivalent optimization problems and propose efficient iterative algorithms to solve them by using the techniques of rank relaxation and successive convex approximation (SCA), where the adopted relaxation is proven to be tight. In addition, we consider a special case under the power minimization criterion and propose an alternative low complexity design. Numerical results demonstrate that the optimized FD communication-based ISAC brings tremendous improvements in terms of both power efficiency and spectral efficiency compared to the conventional ISAC with HD communication.

CrowdCLIP: Unsupervised Crowd Counting via Vision-Language Model

Supervised crowd counting relies heavily on costly manual labeling, which is difficult and expensive, especially in dense scenes. To alleviate the problem, we propose a novel unsupervised framework for crowd counting, named CrowdCLIP. The core idea is built on two observations: 1) the recent contrastive pre-trained vision-language model (CLIP) has presented impressive performance on various downstream tasks; 2) there is a natural mapping between crowd patches and count text. To the best of our knowledge, CrowdCLIP is the first to investigate the vision language knowledge to solve the counting problem. Specifically, in the training stage, we exploit the multi-modal ranking loss by constructing ranking text prompts to match the size-sorted crowd patches to guide the image encoder learning. In the testing stage, to deal with the diversity of image patches, we propose a simple yet effective progressive filtering strategy to first select the highly potential crowd patches and then map them into the language space with various counting intervals. Extensive experiments on five challenging datasets demonstrate that the proposed CrowdCLIP achieves superior performance compared to previous unsupervised state-of-the-art counting methods. Notably, CrowdCLIP even surpasses some popular fully-supervised methods under the cross-dataset setting. The source code will be available at https://github.com/dk-liang/CrowdCLIP.

The multifunctionality of lanthanum-strontium cobaltite nanopowder: high-pressure magnetic and excellent electrocatalytic properties for OER

Simultaneous study of magnetic and electrocatalytic properties of cobaltites under extreme conditions expands understanding of physical and chemical processes proceeding in them with the possibility of their further practical application. Therefore, La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (LSCO) nanopowders have been synthesized at different annealing temperatures tann = 850, 875, 900 C, and their multifunctional properties have been studied comprehensively. As tann increases, the rhombohedral perovskite structure of the LSCO becomes more single-phase, whereas average particle size and dispersion grow. Co ions are in mixed valence states, including major Co3+ and Co4+ components. It has been found that the LSCO-900 shows two main Curie temperatures, TC1 and TC2, associated with a particle size distribution. As an external hydrostatic pressure P increases, average and increase from 253 and 175 K under ambient pressure to 268 and 180 K under P = 0.8 GPa, respectively. At the same time, the antiferromagnetic temperature TAFM and blocking temperature TB also increase from 145 and 169 K to 158 and 170 K, respectively. The increment of for the smaller and bigger particles is sufficiently high and equals 10 and 13 K/GPa, respectively. The magnetocaloric effect in the LSCO-900 nanopowder is relatively weak but with an extremely wide peak > 50 K that makes this composition interesting to be used as one of the components of the composite expanding its working temperature window. Moreover, all LSCO samples showed excellent electrocatalytic performance for the overall water splitting (OER) process (overpotentials only 265-285 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2) with minimal values for LSCO-900. Based on the XPS data, it was found that the formation of a dense amorphous layer on the surface of the particles ensures high stability as a catalyst (at least 24 h) during electrolysis in 1 M KOH electrolyte.

User-Centered Design (IX): A "User Experience 3.0" Paradigm Framework in the Intelligence Era

The field of user experience (UX) based on the design philosophy of "user-centered design" is moving towards the intelligence era. Still, the existing UX paradigm mainly aims at non-intelligent systems and lacks a systematic approach to UX for intelligent systems. Throughout the development of UX, the UX paradigm shows the evolution characteristics of the cross-technology era. At present, the intelligence era has put forward new demands on the UX paradigm. For this reason, this paper proposes a "UX 3.0" paradigm framework and the corresponding UX methodology system in the intelligence era. The "UX 3.0" paradigm framework includes five categories of UX methods: ecological experience, innovation-enabled experience, AI-enabled experience, human-AI interaction-based experience, and human-AI collaboration-based experience methods, each providing corresponding multiple UX paradigmatic orientations. The proposal of the "UX 3.0" paradigm helps improve the existing UX methods and provides methodological support for the research and applications of UX in developing intelligent systems. Finally, this paper looks forward to future research and applications of the "UX 3.0" paradigm.

Super-Resolution Information Enhancement For Crowd Counting

Crowd counting is a challenging task due to the heavy occlusions, scales, and density variations. Existing methods handle these challenges effectively while ignoring low-resolution (LR) circumstances. The LR circumstances weaken the counting performance deeply for two crucial reasons: 1) limited detail information; 2) overlapping head regions accumulate in density maps and result in extreme ground-truth values. An intuitive solution is to employ super-resolution (SR) pre-processes for the input LR images. However, it complicates the inference steps and thus limits application potentials when requiring real-time. We propose a more elegant method termed Multi-Scale Super-Resolution Module (MSSRM). It guides the network to estimate the lost de tails and enhances the detailed information in the feature space. Noteworthy that the MSSRM is plug-in plug-out and deals with the LR problems with no inference cost. As the proposed method requires SR labels, we further propose a Super-Resolution Crowd Counting dataset (SR-Crowd). Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method. The code will be available at https://github.com/PRIS-CV/MSSRM.git.

Towards General Purpose Medical AI: Continual Learning Medical Foundation Model

Inevitable domain and task discrepancies in real-world scenarios can impair the generalization performance of the pre-trained deep models for medical data. Therefore, we audaciously propose that we should build a general-purpose medical AI system that can be seamlessly adapted to downstream domains/tasks. Since the domain/task adaption procedures usually involve additional labeling work for the target data, designing a data-efficient adaption algorithm is desired to save the cost of transferring the learned knowledge. Our recent work found that vision-language models (VLMs) are efficient learners with extraordinary cross-domain ability. Therefore, in this work, we further explore the possibility of leveraging pre-trained VLMs as medical foundation models for building general-purpose medical AI, where we thoroughly investigate three machine-learning paradigms, i.e., domain/task-specialized learning, joint learning, and continual learning, for training the VLMs and evaluate their generalization performance on cross-domain and cross-task test sets. To alleviate the catastrophic forgetting during sequential training, we employ rehearsal learning and receive a sharp boost in terms of generalization capability. In a nutshell, our empirical evidence suggests that continual learning may be a practical and efficient learning paradigm for the medical foundation model. And we hope researchers can use our empirical evidence as basement to further explore the path toward medical foundation model.

Transitioning to human interaction with AI systems: New challenges and opportunities for HCI professionals to enable human-centered AI

While AI has benefited humans, it may also harm humans if not appropriately developed. The focus of HCI work is transiting from conventional human interaction with non-AI computing systems to interaction with AI systems. We conducted a high-level literature review and a holistic analysis of current work in developing AI systems from an HCI perspective. Our review and analysis highlight the new changes introduced by AI technology and the new challenges that HCI professionals face when applying the human-centered AI (HCAI) approach in the development of AI systems. We also identified seven main issues in human interaction with AI systems, which HCI professionals did not encounter when developing non-AI computing systems. To further enable the implementation of the HCAI approach, we identified new HCI opportunities tied to specific HCAI-driven design goals to guide HCI professionals in addressing these new issues. Finally, our assessment of current HCI methods shows the limitations of these methods in support of developing AI systems. We propose alternative methods that can help overcome these limitations and effectively help HCI professionals apply the HCAI approach to the development of AI systems. We also offer strategic recommendations for HCI professionals to effectively influence the development of AI systems with the HCAI approach, eventually developing HCAI systems.
