Decoupling edge versus bulk conductance in the trivial regime of an InAs/GaSb double quantum well using Corbino ring geometry

A Corbino ring geometry is utilized to analyze edge and bulk conductance of InAs/GaSb quantum well structures. We show that edge conductance exists in the trivial regime of this theoretically-predicted topological system with a temperature insensitive linear resistivity per unit length in the range of 2 kOhm/um. A resistor network model of the device is developed to decouple the edge conductance from the bulk conductance, providing a quantitative technique to further investigate the nature of this trivial edge conductance, conclusively identified here as being of n-type.

Distributed Fusion of Labeled Multi-Object Densities Via Label Spaces Matching

In this paper, we address the problem of the distributed multi-target tracking with labeled set filters in the framework of Generalized Covariance Intersection (GCI). Our analyses show that the label space mismatching (LS-DM) phenomenon, which means the same realization drawn from label spaces of different sensors does not have the same implication, is quite common in practical scenarios and may bring serious problems. Our contributions are two-fold. Firstly, we provide a principled mathematical definition of "label spaces matching (LS-DM)" based on information divergence, which is also referred to as LS-M criterion. Then, to handle the LS-DM, we propose a novel two-step distributed fusion algorithm, named as GCI fusion via label spaces matching (GCI-LSM). The first step is to match the label spaces from different sensors. To this end, we build a ranked assignment problem and design a cost function consistent with LS-M criterion to seek the optimal solution of matching correspondence between label spaces of different sensors. The second step is to perform the GCI fusion on the matched label space. We also derive the GCI fusion with generic labeled multi-object (LMO) densities based on LS-M, which is the foundation of labeled distributed fusion algorithms. Simulation results for Gaussian mixture implementation highlight the performance of the proposed GCI-LSM algorithm in two different tracking scenarios.

Principled Random Finite Set Approximations of Labeled Multi-Object Densities

As a fundamental piece of multi-object Bayesian inference, multi-object density has the ability to describe the uncertainty of the number and values of objects, as well as the statistical correlation between objects, thus perfectly matches the behavior of multi-object system. However, it also makes the set integral suffer from the curse of dimensionality and the inherently combinatorial nature of the problem. In this paper, we study the approximations for the universal labeled multi-object (LMO) density and derive several principled approximations including labeled multi-Bernoulli, labeled Poisson and labeled independent identically clustering process based approximations. Also, a detailed analysis on the characteristics (e.g., approximation error and computational complexity) of the proposed approximations is provided. Then some practical suggestions are made for the applications of these approximations based on the preceding analysis and discussion. Finally, an numerical example is given to support our study.

Multi-Sensor Control for Multi-Target Tracking Using Cauchy-Schwarz Divergence

The paper addresses the problem of multi-sensor control for multi-target tracking via labelled random finite sets (RFS) in the sensor network systems. Based on an information theoretic divergence measure, namely Cauchy-Schwarz (CS) divergence which admits a closed form solution for GLMB densities, we propose two novel multi-sensor control approaches in the framework of generalized Covariance Intersection (GCI). The first joint decision making (JDM) method is optimal and can achieve overall good performance, while the second independent decision making (IDM) method is suboptimal as a fast realization with smaller amount of computations. Simulation in challenging situation is presented to verify the effectiveness of the two proposed approaches.

Distributed Multi-Sensor Fusion Using Generalized Multi-Bernoulli Densities

The paper addresses distributed multi-target tracking in the framework of generalized Covariance Intersection (GCI) over multistatic radar system. The proposed method is based on the unlabeled version of generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli (GLMB) family by discarding the labels, referred as generalized multi-Bernoulli (GMB) family. However, it doesn't permit closed form solution for GCI fusion with GMB family. To solve this challenging problem, firstly, we propose an efficient approximation to the GMB family which preserves both the probability hypothesis density (PHD) and cardinality distribution, named as second-order approximation of GMB (SO-GMB) density. Then, we derive explicit expression for the GCI fusion with SO-GMB density. Finally, we compare the first-order approximation of GMB (FO-GMB) density with SO-GMB density in two scenarios and make a concrete analysis of the advantages of the second-order approximation. Simulation results are presented to verify the proposed approach.

Reversible tuning of superconductivity in pressurized qausi-one-dimensional A2Cr3As3 (A=K and Rb)

In-situ hydrostatic and uniaxial high pressure studies were performed on recently discovered CrAs-based qausi-one-dimensional superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A=K and Rb). The established Pressure-Temperature phase diagram in this study clearly demonstrates that either hydrostatic pressure or uniaxial pressure globally suppresses the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), and the latter is more effective than the former. Interestingly, in the same hydrostatic pressure environment, the suppressing rate of Tc in Rb2Cr3As3 is nearly twice as that of K2Cr3As3. Significantly, the reduced Tc in these superconductors can fully recover to its ambient-pressure value after the applied pressure is entirely released. Our results suggest that the bonding distance and angle between Cr-Cr in the Cr3As3 chains are the key factor in determining Tc and that the optimal lattice for superconductivity is hosted in the pristine K2Cr3As3.

Giant semiclassical magnetoresistance in high mobility TaAs2 semimetal

We report the observation of colossal positive magnetoresistance (MR) in single crystalline, high mobility TaAs2 semimetal. The excellent fit of MR by a single quadratic function of the magnetic field B over a wide temperature range (T = 2-300 K) suggests the semiclassical nature of the MR. The measurements of Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, as well as band structure calculations suggest that the giant MR originates from the nearly perfectly compensated electrons and holes in TaAs2. The quadratic MR can even exceed 1,200,000% at B = 9 T and T = 2 K, which is one of the largest values among those of all known semi-metallic compounds including the very recently discovered WTe2 and NbSb2. The giant positive magnetoresistance in TaAs2, which not only has a fundamentally different origin from the negative colossal MR observed in magnetic systems, but also provides a nice complemental system that will be beneficial for applications in magnetoelectronic devices

Fermion superfluid with hybridized $s$- and $p$-wave pairings

Ever since the pioneering work of Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer in the 1950s, exploring novel pairing mechanisms for fermion superfluids has become one of the central tasks in modern physics. Here, we investigate a new type of fermion superfluid with hybridized $s$- and $p$-wave pairings in an ultracold spin-1/2 Fermi gas. Its occurrence is facilitated by the co-existence of comparable $s$- and $p$-wave interactions, which is realizable in a two-component $^{40}$K Fermi gas with close-by $s$- and $p$-wave Feshbach resonances. The hybridized superfluid state is stable over a considerable parameter region on the phase diagram, and can lead to intriguing patterns of spin densities and pairing fields in momentum space. In particular, it can induce a phase-locked $p$-wave pairing in the fermion species that has no $p$-wave interactions. The hybridized nature of this novel superfluid can also be confirmed by measuring the $s$-wave and $p$-wave contacts, which can be extracted from the high-momentum tail of the momentum distribution of each spin component. These results enrich our knowledge of pairing superfluidity in Fermi systems, and open the avenue for achieving novel fermion superfluids with multiple partial-wave scatterings in cold atomic gases.

Correlation between intercalated magnetic layers and superconductivity in pressurized EuFe2(As0.81P0.19)2

We report comprehensive high pressure studies on correlation between intercalated magnetic layers and superconductivity in EuFe2(As0.81P0.19)2 single crystal through in-situ high pressure resistance, specific heat, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption measurements. We find that an unconfirmed magnetic order of the intercalated layers coexists with superconductivity in a narrow pressure range 0-0.5GPa, and then it converts to a ferromagnetic (FM) order at pressure above 0.5 GPa, where its superconductivity is absent. The obtained temperature-pressure phase diagram clearly demonstrates that the unconfirmed magnetic order can emerge from the superconducting state. In stark contrast, the superconductivity cannot develop from the FM state that is evolved from the unconfirmed magnetic state. High pressure X-ray absorption (XAS) measurements reveal that the pressure-induced enhancement of Eu's mean valence plays an important role in suppressing the superconductivity and tuning the transition from the unconfirmed magnetic state to a FM state. The unusual interplay among valence state of Eu ions, magnetism and superconductivity under pressure may shed new light on understanding the role of the intercalated magnetic layers in Fe-based superconductors.

Three-component Fulde-Ferrell superfluids in a two-dimensional Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the pairing physics of a three-component spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas in two spatial dimensions. The three atomic hyperfine states of the system are coupled by the recently realized synthetic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which mixes different hyperfine states into helicity branches in a momentum-dependent manner. As a consequence, the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and the hyperfine-state dependent interactions leads to the emergence of Fulde-Ferrell (FF) pairing states with finite center-of-mass momenta even in the absence of the Fermi-surface asymmetry that is usually mandatory to stabilize an SOC-induced FF state. We show that, for different combinations of spin-dependent interactions, the ground state of the system can either be the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing state with zero center-of-mass momentum or be the FF pairing states. Of particular interest here is the existence of a three-component FF pairing state in which every two out of the three components form FF pairing. We map out the phase diagram of the system and characterize the properties of the three-component FF state, such as the order parameters, the gapless contours and the momentum distributions. Based on these results, we discuss possible experimental detection schemes for the interesting pairing states in the system.

Polarons in Ultracold Fermi Superfluids

We study a new type of Fermi polaron induced by an impurity interacting with an ultracold Fermi superfluid. Due to the three-component nature of the system, the polaron can become trimer-like with a non-universal energy spectrum. We identify multiple avoided crossings between impurity- and trimer-like solutions in both the attractive and the repulsive polaron spectra. In particular, the widths of avoided crossings gradually increase as the Fermi superfluid undergoes a crossover from the BCS side towards the BEC side, which suggests instabilities towards three-body losses. Such losses can be reduced for interaction potentials with small effective ranges. We also demonstrate, using the second-order perturbation theory, that the mean-field evaluation of the fermion-impurity interaction energy is inadequate even for small fermion-impurity scattering lengths, due to the essential effects of Fermi superfluid and short-range physics in such a system. Our results are practically useful for cold atom experiments on mixtures.

Breakdown of Three-dimensional Dirac Semimetal State in pressurized Cd3As2

We report the first observation of a pressure-induced breakdown of the 3D-DSM state in Cd3As2, evidenced by a series of in-situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and single crystal transport measurements. We find that Cd3As2 undergoes a structural phase transition from a metallic tetragonal (T) phase in space group I41/acd to a semiconducting monoclinic (M) phase in space group P21/c at critical pressure 2.57 GPa, above this pressure, an activation energy gap appears, accompanied by distinct switches in Hall resistivity slope and electron mobility. These changes of crystal symmetry and corresponding transport properties manifest the breakdown of the 3D-DSM state in pressurized Cd3As2.

Pressure-induced quantum phase transitions in topological insulator YbB6

Topological insulators (TIs) containing 4f electrons have recently attracted intensive interests due to the possible interplay of their non-trivial topological properties and strong electronic correlations. YbB6 and SmB6 are the prototypical systems with such unusual properties, which may be tuned by external pressure to give rise to new emergent phenomena. Here, we report the first observation, through in-situ high pressure resistance, Hall, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption measurements, of two pressure-induced quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in YbB6. Our data revealthat the two insulating phases are separated by a metallic phase due to the pressure-driven valence change of Yb f-orbitals. In combination with previous studies, our results suggest that the two insulating states may be topologically different in nature and originate from the d-p and d-f hybridization, respectively. The tunable topological properties of YbB6 revealed in this study may shed light on the intriguing correlation between the topology and the 4f electrons from the perspective of pressure dependent studies.

Gate-tunable high mobility remote-doped InSb/In_{1-x}Al_{x}Sb quantum well heterostructures

Gate-tunable high-mobility InSb/In_{1-x}Al_{x}Sb quantum wells (QWs) grown on GaAs substrates are reported. The QW two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) channel mobility in excess of 200,000 cm^{2}/Vs is measured at T=1.8K. In asymmetrically remote-doped samples with an HfO_{2} gate dielectric formed by atomic layer deposition, parallel conduction is eliminated and complete 2DEG channel depletion is reached with minimal hysteresis in gate bias response of the 2DEG electron density. The integer quantum Hall effect with Landau level filling factor down to 1 is observed. A high-transparency non-alloyed Ohmic contact to the 2DEG with contact resistance below 1Ω \cdot mm is achieved at 1.8K.

Swallowtail Structure in Fermi Superfluids with Periodically Modulated Interactions

We study the superfluid flow in a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi gas with spatially modulated interactions induced by an optical Feshbach resonance. Due to the competition between the periodicity of the modulated interaction and the nonlinearity of the background interaction, an interesting swallowtail structure emerges in the energy spectrum under appropriate parameters. As the interaction strengths are tuned, the swallowtail structure may disappear, giving rise to various different states on a rich phase diagram. We investigate the spatial distribution of the order parameter and the particle density under various parameters, which are useful for the experimental detection of the interesting phases in these systems.

Superconductivity emerging from suppressed large magnetoresistant state in WTe2

The recent discovery of large and non-saturating magnetoresistance (LMR) in WTe2 provides a unique playground to find new phenomena and significant perspective for potential applications. Here we report the first observation of superconductivity near the proximity of suppressed LMR state in pressurized WTe2 through high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electrical resistance, magnetoresistance, and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. It is found that the positive magnetoresistance effect can be turned off at a critical pressure of 10.5 GPa without crystal structure change and superconductivity emerges simultaneously. The maximum superconducting transition temperature can be reached to 6.5 K at ~15 GPa and it decreases down to 2.6 K at ~25 GPa. In-situ high pressure Hall coefficient measurements at 10 K demonstrate that elevating pressure decreases hole carrier's population but increases electron carrier's population. Significantly, at the critical pressure, we observed a sign change in the Hall coefficient, indicating a possible Lifshitz-type quantum phase transition in WTe2.

Electric and Magnetic Tuning Between the Trivial and Topological Phases in InAs/GaSb Double Quantum Wells

Among the theoretically predicted two-dimensional topological insulators, InAs/GaSb double quantum wells (DQWs) have a unique double-layered structure with electron and hole gases separated in two layers, which enables tuning of the band alignment via electric and magnetic fields. However, the rich trivial-topological phase diagram has yet to be experimentally explored. We present an in situ and continuous tuning between the trivial and topological insulating phases in InAs/GaSb DQWs through electrical dual-gating. Furthermore, we show that an in-plane magnetic field shifts the electron and hole bands relatively to each other in momentum space, functioning as a powerful tool to discriminate between the topologically distinct states.

Topological superradiance in a degenerate Fermi gas

We predict the existence of a topological superradiant state in a two-component degenerate Fermi gas in a cavity. The superradiant light generation in the transversely driven cavity mode induces a cavity-assisted spin-orbit coupling in the system and opens a bulk gap at half-filling. This mechanism can simultaneously drive a topological phase transition in the system, yielding a topological superradiant phase. We map out the steady-state phase diagram of the system in the presence of an effective Zeeman field, and identify a critical quadracritical point beyond which the topological and the conventional superraidiant phase boundaries separate. We also propose to detect the topological phase transitions based on the unique signatures in the momentum-space density distribution.
