PlantoGraphy: Incorporating Iterative Design Process into Generative Artificial Intelligence for Landscape Rendering

Landscape renderings are realistic images of landscape sites, allowing stakeholders to perceive better and evaluate design ideas. While recent advances in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) enable automated generation of landscape renderings, the end-to-end methods are not compatible with common design processes, leading to insufficient alignment with design idealizations and limited cohesion of iterative landscape design. Informed by a formative study for comprehending design requirements, we present PlantoGraphy, an iterative design system that allows for interactive configuration of GAI models to accommodate human-centered design practice. A two-stage pipeline is incorporated: first, concretization module transforms conceptual ideas into concrete scene layouts with a domain-oriented large language model; and second, illustration module converts scene layouts into realistic landscape renderings using a fine-tuned low-rank adaptation diffusion model. PlantoGraphy has undergone a series of performance evaluations and user studies, demonstrating its effectiveness in landscape rendering generation and the high recognition of its interactive functionality.

IntentTuner: An Interactive Framework for Integrating Human Intents in Fine-tuning Text-to-Image Generative Models

Fine-tuning facilitates the adaptation of text-to-image generative models to novel concepts (e.g., styles and portraits), empowering users to forge creatively customized content. Recent efforts on fine-tuning focus on reducing training data and lightening computation overload but neglect alignment with user intentions, particularly in manual curation of multi-modal training data and intent-oriented evaluation. Informed by a formative study with fine-tuning practitioners for comprehending user intentions, we propose IntentTuner, an interactive framework that intelligently incorporates human intentions throughout each phase of the fine-tuning workflow. IntentTuner enables users to articulate training intentions with imagery exemplars and textual descriptions, automatically converting them into effective data augmentation strategies. Furthermore, IntentTuner introduces novel metrics to measure user intent alignment, allowing intent-aware monitoring and evaluation of model training. Application exemplars and user studies demonstrate that IntentTuner streamlines fine-tuning, reducing cognitive effort and yielding superior models compared to the common baseline tool.

C2Ideas: Supporting Creative Interior Color Design Ideation with Large Language Model

Interior color design is a creative process that endeavors to allocate colors to furniture and other elements within an interior space. While much research focuses on generating realistic interior designs, these automated approaches often misalign with user intention and disregard design rationales. Informed by a need-finding preliminary study, we develop C2Ideas, an innovative system for designers to creatively ideate color schemes enabled by an intent-aligned and domain-oriented large language model. C2Ideas integrates a three-stage process: Idea Prompting stage distills user intentions into color linguistic prompts; Word-Color Association stage transforms the prompts into semantically and stylistically coherent color schemes; and Interior Coloring stage assigns colors to interior elements complying with design principles. We also develop an interactive interface that enables flexible user refinement and interpretable reasoning. C2Ideas has undergone a series of indoor cases and user studies, demonstrating its effectiveness and high recognition of interactive functionality by designers.

VirtuWander: Enhancing Multi-modal Interaction for Virtual Tour Guidance through Large Language Models

Tour guidance in virtual museums encourages multi-modal interactions to boost user experiences, concerning engagement, immersion, and spatial awareness. Nevertheless, achieving the goal is challenging due to the complexity of comprehending diverse user needs and accommodating personalized user preferences. Informed by a formative study that characterizes guidance-seeking contexts, we establish a multi-modal interaction design framework for virtual tour guidance. We then design VirtuWander, a two-stage innovative system using domain-oriented large language models to transform user inquiries into diverse guidance-seeking contexts and facilitate multi-modal interactions. The feasibility and versatility of VirtuWander are demonstrated with virtual guiding examples that encompass various touring scenarios and cater to personalized preferences. We further evaluate VirtuWander through a user study within an immersive simulated museum. The results suggest that our system enhances engaging virtual tour experiences through personalized communication and knowledgeable assistance, indicating its potential for expanding into real-world scenarios.

TypeDance: Creating Semantic Typographic Logos from Image through Personalized Generation

Semantic typographic logos harmoniously blend typeface and imagery to represent semantic concepts while maintaining legibility. Conventional methods using spatial composition and shape substitution are hindered by the conflicting requirement for achieving seamless spatial fusion between geometrically dissimilar typefaces and semantics. While recent advances made AI generation of semantic typography possible, the end-to-end approaches exclude designer involvement and disregard personalized design. This paper presents TypeDance, an AI-assisted tool incorporating design rationales with the generative model for personalized semantic typographic logo design. It leverages combinable design priors extracted from uploaded image exemplars and supports type-imagery mapping at various structural granularity, achieving diverse aesthetic designs with flexible control. Additionally, we instantiate a comprehensive design workflow in TypeDance, including ideation, selection, generation, evaluation, and iteration. A two-task user evaluation, including imitation and creation, confirmed the usability of TypeDance in design across different usage scenarios

The Contemporary Art of Image Search: Iterative User Intent Expansion via Vision-Language Model

Image search is an essential and user-friendly method to explore vast galleries of digital images. However, existing image search methods heavily rely on proximity measurements like tag matching or image similarity, requiring precise user inputs for satisfactory results. To meet the growing demand for a contemporary image search engine that enables accurate comprehension of users' search intentions, we introduce an innovative user intent expansion framework. Our framework leverages visual-language models to parse and compose multi-modal user inputs to provide more accurate and satisfying results. It comprises two-stage processes: 1) a parsing stage that incorporates a language parsing module with large language models to enhance the comprehension of textual inputs, along with a visual parsing module that integrates an interactive segmentation module to swiftly identify detailed visual elements within images; and 2) a logic composition stage that combines multiple user search intents into a unified logic expression for more sophisticated operations in complex searching scenarios. Moreover, the intent expansion framework enables users to perform flexible contextualized interactions with the search results to further specify or adjust their detailed search intents iteratively. We implemented the framework into an image search system for NFT (non-fungible token) search and conducted a user study to evaluate its usability and novel properties. The results indicate that the proposed framework significantly improves users' image search experience. Particularly the parsing and contextualized interactions prove useful in allowing users to express their search intents more accurately and engage in a more enjoyable iterative search experience.

Graph Enhanced BERT for Query Understanding

Query understanding plays a key role in exploring users' search intents and facilitating users to locate their most desired information. However, it is inherently challenging since it needs to capture semantic information from short and ambiguous queries and often requires massive task-specific labeled data. In recent years, pre-trained language models (PLMs) have advanced various natural language processing tasks because they can extract general semantic information from large-scale corpora. Therefore, there are unprecedented opportunities to adopt PLMs for query understanding. However, there is a gap between the goal of query understanding and existing pre-training strategies -- the goal of query understanding is to boost search performance while existing strategies rarely consider this goal. Thus, directly applying them to query understanding is sub-optimal. On the other hand, search logs contain user clicks between queries and urls that provide rich users' search behavioral information on queries beyond their content. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to fill this gap by exploring search logs. In particular, to incorporate search logs into pre-training, we first construct a query graph where nodes are queries and two queries are connected if they lead to clicks on the same urls. Then we propose a novel graph-enhanced pre-training framework, GE-BERT, which can leverage both query content and the query graph. In other words, GE-BERT can capture both the semantic information and the users' search behavioral information of queries. Extensive experiments on various query understanding tasks have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Elucidate Gender Fairness in Singing Voice Transcription

It is widely known that males and females typically possess different sound characteristics when singing, such as timbre and pitch, but it has never been explored whether these gender-based characteristics lead to a performance disparity in singing voice transcription (SVT), whose target includes pitch. Such a disparity could cause fairness issues and severely affect the user experience of downstream SVT applications. Motivated by this, we first demonstrate the female superiority of SVT systems, which is observed across different models and datasets. We find that different pitch distributions, rather than gender data imbalance, contribute to this disparity. To address this issue, we propose using an attribute predictor to predict gender labels and adversarially training the SVT system to enforce the gender-invariance of acoustic representations. Leveraging the prior knowledge that pitch distributions may contribute to the gender bias, we propose conditionally aligning acoustic representations between demographic groups by feeding note events to the attribute predictor. Empirical experiments on multiple benchmark SVT datasets show that our method significantly reduces gender bias (up to more than 50%) with negligible degradation of overall SVT performance, on both in-domain and out-of-domain singing data, thus offering a better fairness-utility trade-off.

Accretion Disk for regular black holes with sub-Planckian curvature

We investigate the accretion disk for a sort of regular black holes which are characterized by sub-Planckian curvature and Minkowskian core. We derive null geodesics outside the horizon of such regular black holes and analyze the feature of the light rays from the accretion disk which can be classified into direct emission, lensed rings, and photon rings. We find that the observed brightness under different emission models is mainly determined by direct emission, while the contribution from the flux of the lensed and photon rings is limited. By comparing with Bardeen black hole with a dS core, it is found that the black hole with a Minkowskian core exhibits distinct astronomical optical features when surrounded by accretion disk, which potentially provides a way to distinguish these two sorts of black holes by astronomical observation.

TimeTuner: Diagnosing Time Representations for Time-Series Forecasting with Counterfactual Explanations

Deep learning (DL) approaches are being increasingly used for time-series forecasting, with many efforts devoted to designing complex DL models. Recent studies have shown that the DL success is often attributed to effective data representations, fostering the fields of feature engineering and representation learning. However, automated approaches for feature learning are typically limited with respect to incorporating prior knowledge, identifying interactions among variables, and choosing evaluation metrics to ensure that the models are reliable. To improve on these limitations, this paper contributes a novel visual analytics framework, namely TimeTuner, designed to help analysts understand how model behaviors are associated with localized correlations, stationarity, and granularity of time-series representations. The system mainly consists of the following two-stage technique: We first leverage counterfactual explanations to connect the relationships among time-series representations, multivariate features and model predictions. Next, we design multiple coordinated views including a partition-based correlation matrix and juxtaposed bivariate stripes, and provide a set of interactions that allow users to step into the transformation selection process, navigate through the feature space, and reason the model performance. We instantiate TimeTuner with two transformation methods of smoothing and sampling, and demonstrate its applicability on real-world time-series forecasting of univariate sunspots and multivariate air pollutants. Feedback from domain experts indicates that our system can help characterize time-series representations and guide the feature engineering processes.

Let the Chart Spark: Embedding Semantic Context into Chart with Text-to-Image Generative Model

Pictorial visualization seamlessly integrates data and semantic context into visual representation, conveying complex information in a manner that is both engaging and informative. Extensive studies have been devoted to developing authoring tools to simplify the creation of pictorial visualizations. However, mainstream works mostly follow a retrieving-and-editing pipeline that heavily relies on retrieved visual elements from a dedicated corpus, which often compromise the data integrity. Text-guided generation methods are emerging, but may have limited applicability due to its predefined recognized entities. In this work, we propose ChartSpark, a novel system that embeds semantic context into chart based on text-to-image generative model. ChartSpark generates pictorial visualizations conditioned on both semantic context conveyed in textual inputs and data information embedded in plain charts. The method is generic for both foreground and background pictorial generation, satisfying the design practices identified from an empirical research into existing pictorial visualizations. We further develop an interactive visual interface that integrates a text analyzer, editing module, and evaluation module to enable users to generate, modify, and assess pictorial visualizations. We experimentally demonstrate the usability of our tool, and conclude with a discussion of the potential of using text-to-image generative model combined with interactive interface for visualization design.

Deep Audio-Visual Singing Voice Transcription based on Self-Supervised Learning Models

Singing voice transcription converts recorded singing audio to musical notation. Sound contamination (such as accompaniment) and lack of annotated data make singing voice transcription an extremely difficult task. We take two approaches to tackle the above challenges: 1) introducing multimodal learning for singing voice transcription together with a new multimodal singing dataset, N20EMv2, enhancing noise robustness by utilizing video information (lip movements to predict the onset/offset of notes), and 2) adapting self-supervised learning models from the speech domain to the singing voice transcription task, significantly reducing annotated data requirements while preserving pretrained features. We build a self-supervised learning based audio-only singing voice transcription system, which not only outperforms current state-of-the-art technologies as a strong baseline, but also generalizes well to out-of-domain singing data. We then develop a self-supervised learning based video-only singing voice transcription system that detects note onsets and offsets with an accuracy of about 80\%. Finally, based on the powerful acoustic and visual representations extracted by the above two systems as well as the feature fusion design, we create an audio-visual singing voice transcription system that improves the noise robustness significantly under different acoustic environments compared to the audio-only systems.

WYTIWYR: A User Intent-Aware Framework with Multi-modal Inputs for Visualization Retrieval

Retrieving charts from a large corpus is a fundamental task that can benefit numerous applications such as visualization recommendations. The retrieved results are expected to conform to both explicit visual attributes (e.g., chart type, colormap) and implicit user intents (e.g., design style, context information) that vary upon application scenarios. However, existing example-based chart retrieval methods are built upon non-decoupled and low-level visual features that are hard to interpret, while definition-based ones are constrained to pre-defined attributes that are hard to extend. In this work, we propose a new framework, namely WYTIWYR (What-You-Think-Is-What-You-Retrieve), that integrates user intents into the chart retrieval process. The framework consists of two stages: first, the Annotation stage disentangles the visual attributes within the bitmap query chart; and second, the Retrieval stage embeds the user's intent with customized text prompt as well as query chart, to recall targeted retrieval result. We develop a prototype WYTIWYR system leveraging a contrastive language-image pre-training (CLIP) model to achieve zero-shot classification, and test the prototype on a large corpus with charts crawled from the Internet. Quantitative experiments, case studies, and qualitative interviews are conducted. The results demonstrate the usability and effectiveness of our proposed framework.

Astrophysical observables for regular black holes with sub-Planckian curvature

We investigate the photon sphere and the extremal stable circular orbit (ESCO) for massive particles over a recently proposed regular black holes with sub-Planckian curvature and Minkowskian core. We derive the effective potential for geodesic orbits and determine the radius of circular photon orbits, with an analysis on the stability of these orbits. We extend our analysis to the background of compact massive object (CMO) without horizon, whose mass is below the lowest bound for the formation of a black hole. For massive particles, the ESCOs become double-valued in CMO phase and we calculate the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) and the outermost stable circular orbits (OSCO). By comparing wih Bardeen black hole and Hayward black hole, it is also found that the locations of photon sphere and ESCO in CMO phase with Minkowskian core are evidently different from the ones in CMO phase with dS core, which potentially provides a way to distinguish these two sorts of black holes by astronomical observation.

Crack patterns of drying dense bacterial suspensions

Drying of bacterial suspensions is frequently encountered in a plethora of natural and engineering processes. However, the evaporation-driven mechanical instabilities of dense consolidating bacterial suspensions have not been explored heretofore. Here, we report the formation of two different crack patterns of drying suspensions of \textit{Escherichia coli} (\textit{E. coli}) with distinct motile behaviors. Circular cracks are observed for wild-type \textit{E. coli} with active swimming, whereas spiral-like cracks form for immotile bacteria. Using the elastic fracture mechanics and the poroelastic theory, we show that the formation of the circular cracks is determined by the tensile nature of the radial drying stress once the cracks are initiated by the local order structure of bacteria due to their collective swimming. Our study demonstrates the link between the microscopic swimming behaviors of individual bacteria and the mechanical instabilities and macroscopic pattern formation of drying bacterial films. The results shed light on the dynamics of active matter in a drying process and provide useful information for understanding various biological processes associated with drying bacterial suspensions.

A novel spectral method for the subdiffusion equation

In this paper, we design and analyze a novel spectral method for the subdiffusion equation. As it has been known, the solutions of this equation are usually singular near the initial time. Consequently, direct application of the traditional high-order numerical methods is inefficient. We try to overcome this difficulty in a novel approach by combining variable transformation techniques with spectral methods. The idea is to first use suitable variable transformation to re-scale the underlying equation, then construct spectral methods for the re-scaled equation. We establish a new variational framework based on the $ψ$-fractional Sobolev spaces. This allows us to prove the well-posedness of the associated variational problem. The proposed spectral method is based on the variational problem and generalized Jacobi polynomials to approximate the re-scaled fractional differential equation. Our theoretical and numerical investigation show that the proposed method is exponentially convergent for general right hand side functions, even though the exact solution has very limited regularity. Implementation details are also provided, along with a series of numerical examples to show the efficiency of the proposed method.

Fault Detection and Isolation of Uncertain Nonlinear Parabolic PDE Systems

This paper proposes a novel fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme for distributed parameter systems modeled by a class of parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with nonlinear uncertain dynamics. A key feature of the proposed FDI scheme is its capability of dealing with the effects of system uncertainties for accurate FDI. Specifically, an approximate ordinary differential equation (ODE) system is first derived to capture the dominant dynamics of the original PDE system. An adaptive dynamics identification approach using radial basis function neural network is then proposed based on this ODE system, so as to achieve locally-accurate identification of the uncertain system dynamics under normal and faulty modes. A bank of FDI estimators with associated adaptive thresholds are finally designed for real-time FDI decision making. Rigorous analysis on the FDI performance in terms of fault detectability and isolatability is provided. Simulation study on a representative transport-reaction process is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed approach.

ERNIE 3.0 Titan: Exploring Larger-scale Knowledge Enhanced Pre-training for Language Understanding and Generation

Pre-trained language models have achieved state-of-the-art results in various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. GPT-3 has shown that scaling up pre-trained language models can further exploit their enormous potential. A unified framework named ERNIE 3.0 was recently proposed for pre-training large-scale knowledge enhanced models and trained a model with 10 billion parameters. ERNIE 3.0 outperformed the state-of-the-art models on various NLP tasks. In order to explore the performance of scaling up ERNIE 3.0, we train a hundred-billion-parameter model called ERNIE 3.0 Titan with up to 260 billion parameters on the PaddlePaddle platform. Furthermore, we design a self-supervised adversarial loss and a controllable language modeling loss to make ERNIE 3.0 Titan generate credible and controllable texts. To reduce the computation overhead and carbon emission, we propose an online distillation framework for ERNIE 3.0 Titan, where the teacher model will teach students and train itself simultaneously. ERNIE 3.0 Titan is the largest Chinese dense pre-trained model so far. Empirical results show that the ERNIE 3.0 Titan outperforms the state-of-the-art models on 68 NLP datasets.
