Conductive Domain Walls in Non-Oxide Ferroelectrics Sn2P2S6

The conductive domain wall (CDW) is extensively investigated in ferroelectrics, which can be considered as a quasi-two-dimensional reconfigurable conducting channel embedded into an insulating material. Therefore, it is highly important for the application of ferroelectric nanoelectronics. Hitherto, most CDW investigations are restricted in oxides, and limited work has been reported in non-oxides to the contrary. Here, by successfully synthesizing the non-oxide ferroelectric Sn2P2S6 single crystal, we observed and confirmed the domain wall conductivity by using different scanning probe techniques which origins from the nature of inclined domain walls. Moreover, the domains separated by CDW also exhibit distinguishable electrical conductivity due to the interfacial polarization charge with opposite signs. The result provides a novel platform for understanding electrical conductivity behavior of the domains and domain walls in non-oxide ferroelectrics.

Severity Assessment of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Using Quantitative Features from Chest CT Images

Background: Chest computed tomography (CT) is recognized as an important tool for COVID-19 severity assessment. As the number of affected patients increase rapidly, manual severity assessment becomes a labor-intensive task, and may lead to delayed treatment. Purpose: Using machine learning method to realize automatic severity assessment (non-severe or severe) of COVID-19 based on chest CT images, and to explore the severity-related features from the resulting assessment model. Materials and Method: Chest CT images of 176 patients (age 45.3$\pm$16.5 years, 96 male and 80 female) with confirmed COVID-19 are used, from which 63 quantitative features, e.g., the infection volume/ratio of the whole lung and the volume of ground-glass opacity (GGO) regions, are calculated. A random forest (RF) model is trained to assess the severity (non-severe or severe) based on quantitative features. Importance of each quantitative feature, which reflects the correlation to the severity of COVID-19, is calculated from the RF model. Results: Using three-fold cross validation, the RF model shows promising results, i.e., 0.933 of true positive rate, 0.745 of true negative rate, 0.875 of accuracy, and 0.91 of area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The resulting importance of quantitative features shows that the volume and its ratio (with respect to the whole lung volume) of ground glass opacity (GGO) regions are highly related to the severity of COVID-19, and the quantitative features calculated from the right lung are more related to the severity assessment than those of the left lung. Conclusion: The RF based model can achieve automatic severity assessment (non-severe or severe) of COVID-19 infection, and the performance is promising. Several quantitative features, which have the potential to reflect the severity of COVID-19, were revealed.

Long distance measurement using single soliton microcomb

Dispersive interferometry (DPI) takes a major interest in optical frequency comb (OFC) based long distance laser-based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) for the merits of strong anti-interference ability and long coherent length. However, the mismatch between the repetition rate of OFC and the resolution of optical spectrum acquisition system induces a large dead-zone which is a major obstacle for practical applications. Here, a new DPI LIDAR on the strength of high-repetition-rate soliton microcomb is demonstrated, which reaches a minimum Allan deviation of 27 nm for an outdoor 1179 m ranging experiment. The proposed scheme approaches a compact, high-accuracy, and none-dead-zone long distance ranging system, opening up new opportunities for emerging applications of frontier scientific researches and advanced manufacturing.

On a Curvature Flow in a Band Domain with Unbounded Boundary Slopes

We consider an anisotropic curvature flow $V= A(\mathbf{n})H + B(\mathbf{n})$ in a band domain $Ω:=[-1,1]\times R$, where $\mathbf{n}$, $V$ and $H$ denote the unit normal vector, normal velocity and curvature, respectively, of a graphic curve $Γ_t$. We consider the case when $A>0>B$ and the curve $Γ_t$ contacts $\partial_\pm Ω$ with slopes equaling to $\pm 1$ times of its height (which are unbounded when the solution moves to infinity). First, we present the global well-posedness and then, under some symmetric assumptions on $A$ and $B$, we show the uniform interior gradient estimates for the solution. Based on these estimates, we prove that $Γ_t$ converges as $t\to \infty$ in $C^{2,1}_{\text{loc}} ((-1,1)\times R)$ topology to a cup-like traveling wave with {\it infinite} derivatives on the boundaries.

Topology Identification in Distribution Networks using Harmonic Synchrophasor Measurements

Topology identification (TI) in distribution networks is a challenging task due to the limited measurement resources and therefore the inevitable need to use pseudo-measurements that are often inaccurate. To address this issue, a new method is proposed in this paper to integrate harmonic synchrophasors into the TI problem in order to enhance TI accuracy in distribution networks. In this method, topology identification is done jointly based on both fundamental synchrophasor measurements and harmonic synchrophasor measurements. This is done by formulating and then solving a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Furthermore, an analysis is provided to capture the number of and the location of harmonic sources and sensors that are needed to ensure full observability. The benefits of the proposed TI scheme are compared against those of the traditional scheme that utilizes only the fundamental measurements. Finally, through numerical simulations on the IEEE 33-Bus power system, it is shown that the proposed scheme is considerably accurate compared to the traditional scheme in topology identification.

Noise control and utility: from regulatory network to spatial patterning

Stochasticity (or noise) at cellular and molecular levels has been observed extensively as a universal feature for living systems. However, how living systems deal with noise while performing desirable biological functions remains a major mystery. Regulatory network configurations, such as their topology and timescale, are shown to be critical in attenuating noise, and noise is also found to facilitate cell fate decision. Here we review major recent findings on noise attenuation through regulatory control, the benefit of noise via noise-induced cellular plasticity during developmental patterning, and summarize key principles underlying noise control.

Raman laser from an optical resonator with a grafted single molecule monolayer

Raman-based technologies have enabled many ground-breaking scientific discoveries related to surface science, single molecule chemistry and biology. For example, researchers have identified surface bound molecules by their Raman vibrational modes and demonstrated polarization-dependent Raman gain. However, a surface constrained Raman laser has yet to be demonstrated because of the challenges associated with achieving a sufficiently high photon population located at a surface to transition from spontaneous to stimulated Raman scattering. Here, advances in surface chemistry and in integrated photonics are combined to demonstrate lasing based on surface stimulated Raman scattering (SSRS). By creating an oriented, constrained Si-O-Si monolayer on the surface of integrated silica optical microresonators, the requisite conditions for SSRS are achieved with low threshold powers (200microW). The expected polarization-dependence of the SSRS due to the orientation of the Si-O-Si bond is observed. Due to the ordered monolayer, the Raman lasing efficiency is improved from ~5% to over 40%.

Dual-energy CT imaging using a single-energy CT data is feasible via deep learning

In a standard computed tomography (CT) image, pixels having the same Hounsfield Units (HU) can correspond to different materials and it is, therefore, challenging to differentiate and quantify materials. Dual-energy CT (DECT) is desirable to differentiate multiple materials, but DECT scanners are not widely available as single-energy CT (SECT) scanners. Here we develop a deep learning approach to perform DECT imaging by using standard SECT data. A deep learning model to map low-energy image to high-energy image using a two-stage convolutional neural network (CNN) is developed. The model was evaluated using patients who received contrast-enhanced abdomen DECT scan with a popular DE application: virtual non-contrast (VNC) imaging and contrast quantification. The HU differences between the predicted and original high-energy CT images are 3.47, 2.95, 2.38 and 2.40 HU for ROIs on the spine, aorta, liver, and stomach, respectively. The HU differences between VNC images obtained from original DECT and deep learning DECT are 4.10, 3.75, 2.33 and 2.92 HU for the 4 ROIs, respectively. The aorta iodine quantification difference between iodine maps obtained from original DECT and deep learning DECT images is 0.9\%, suggesting high consistency between the predicted and the original high-energy CT images. This study demonstrates that highly accurate DECT imaging with single low-energy data is achievable by using a deep learning approach. The proposed method can significantly simplify the DECT system design, reducing the scanning dose and imaging cost.

Features of Structure and Absorption in the Jet-Launching Region of M87

M87 is one of the best available source for studying the AGN jet-launching region. To enrich our knowledge of this region, with quasi-simultaneous observations using VLBA at 22, 43 and 86 GHz, we capture the images of the radio jet in M87 on a scale within several thousand R s . Based on the images, we analyze the transverse jet structure and obtain the most accurate spectral-index maps of the jet in M87 so far, then for the first time, we compare the results of the two analyses and find a spatial association between the jet collimations and the local enhancement of the density of external medium in the jet-launching region. We also find the external medium is not uniform, and greatly contributes to the free-free absorption in this region. In addition, we find for the jet in M87, its temporal morphology in the launching region may be largely affected by the local, short-lived kink instability growing in itself.

Nonlinear spectrums of Finsler manifolds

In this paper we investigate the spectral problem in Finsler geometry. Due to the nonlinearity of the Finsler-Laplacian operator, we introduce \textit{faithful dimension pairs} by means of which the spectrum of a compact reversible Finsler metric measure manifold is defined. Various upper and lower bounds of such eigenvalues are provided in the spirit of Cheng, Buser and Gromov, which extend in several aspects the results of Hassannezhad, Kokarev and Polterovich. Moreover, we construct several faithful dimension pairs based on Lusternik-Schnirelmann category, Krasnoselskii genus and essential dimension, respectively; however, we also show that the Lebesgue covering dimension pair is not faithful. As an application, we show that the Bakry-Émery spectrum of a closed weighted Riemannian manifold can be characterized by the faithful Lusternik-Schnirelmann dimension pair.

Dual-Domain Fusion Convolutional Neural Network for Contrast Enhancement Forensics

Contrast enhancement (CE) forensics techniques have always been of great interest for image forensics community, as they can be an effective tool for recovering image history and identifying tampered images. Although several CE forensic algorithms have been proposed, their accuracy and robustness against some kinds of processing are still unsatisfactory. In order to attenuate such deficiency, in this paper we propose a new framework based on dual-domain fusion convolutional neural network to fuse the features of pixel and histogram domains for CE forensics. Specifically, we first present a pixel-domain convolutional neural network (P-CNN) to automatically capture the patterns of contrast-enhanced images in the pixel domain. Then, we present a histogram-domain convolutional neural network (H-CNN) to extract the features in the histogram domain. The feature representations of pixel and histogram domains are fused and fed into two fully connected layers for the classification of contrast-enhanced images. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieve better performance and is robust against pre-JPEG compression and anti-forensics attacks. In addition, a strategy for performance improvement of CNN-based forensics is explored, which could provide guidance for the design of CNN-based forensics tools.

Hardy type inequalities on closed manifolds via Ricci curvature

The paper is devoted to Hardy type inequalities on closed manifolds. By means of various weighted Ricci curvatures, we establish several sharp Hardy type inequalities on closed weighted Riemannian manifolds. Our results complement in several aspects those obtained recently in the noncompact Riemannian setting.

MoverScore: Text Generation Evaluating with Contextualized Embeddings and Earth Mover Distance

A robust evaluation metric has a profound impact on the development of text generation systems. A desirable metric compares system output against references based on their semantics rather than surface forms. In this paper we investigate strategies to encode system and reference texts to devise a metric that shows a high correlation with human judgment of text quality. We validate our new metric, namely MoverScore, on a number of text generation tasks including summarization, machine translation, image captioning, and data-to-text generation, where the outputs are produced by a variety of neural and non-neural systems. Our findings suggest that metrics combining contextualized representations with a distance measure perform the best. Such metrics also demonstrate strong generalization capability across tasks. For ease-of-use we make our metrics available as web service.

Denoising based Sequence-to-Sequence Pre-training for Text Generation

This paper presents a new sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) pre-training method PoDA (Pre-training of Denoising Autoencoders), which learns representations suitable for text generation tasks. Unlike encoder-only (e.g., BERT) or decoder-only (e.g., OpenAI GPT) pre-training approaches, PoDA jointly pre-trains both the encoder and decoder by denoising the noise-corrupted text, and it also has the advantage of keeping the network architecture unchanged in the subsequent fine-tuning stage. Meanwhile, we design a hybrid model of Transformer and pointer-generator networks as the backbone architecture for PoDA. We conduct experiments on two text generation tasks: abstractive summarization, and grammatical error correction. Results on four datasets show that PoDA can improve model performance over strong baselines without using any task-specific techniques and significantly speed up convergence.

Personalized Attraction Enhanced Sponsored Search with Multi-task Learning

We study a novel problem of sponsored search (SS) for E-Commerce platforms: how we can attract query users to click product advertisements (ads) by presenting them features of products that attract them. This not only benefits merchants and the platform, but also improves user experience. The problem is challenging due to the following reasons: (1) We need to carefully manipulate the ad content without affecting user search experience. (2) It is difficult to obtain users' explicit feedback of their preference in product features. (3) Nowadays, a great portion of the search traffic in E-Commerce platforms is from their mobile apps (e.g., nearly 90% in Taobao). The situation would get worse in the mobile setting due to limited space. We are focused on the mobile setting and propose to manipulate ad titles by adding a few selling point keywords (SPs) to attract query users. We model it as a personalized attractive SP prediction problem and carry out both large-scale offline evaluation and online A/B tests in Taobao. The contributions include: (1) We explore various exhibition schemes of SPs. (2) We propose a surrogate of user explicit feedback for SP preference. (3) We also explore multi-task learning and various additional features to boost the performance. A variant of our best model has already been deployed in Taobao, leading to a 2% increase in revenue per thousand impressions and an opt-out rate of merchants less than 4%.

IntentGC: a Scalable Graph Convolution Framework Fusing Heterogeneous Information for Recommendation

The remarkable progress of network embedding has led to state-of-the-art algorithms in recommendation. However, the sparsity of user-item interactions (i.e., explicit preferences) on websites remains a big challenge for predicting users' behaviors. Although research efforts have been made in utilizing some auxiliary information (e.g., social relations between users) to solve the problem, the existing rich heterogeneous auxiliary relationships are still not fully exploited. Moreover, previous works relied on linearly combined regularizers and suffered parameter tuning. In this work, we collect abundant relationships from common user behaviors and item information, and propose a novel framework named IntentGC to leverage both explicit preferences and heterogeneous relationships by graph convolutional networks. In addition to the capability of modeling heterogeneity, IntentGC can learn the importance of different relationships automatically by the neural model in a nonlinear sense. To apply IntentGC to web-scale applications, we design a faster graph convolutional model named IntentNet by avoiding unnecessary feature interactions. Empirical experiments on two large-scale real-world datasets and online A/B tests in Alibaba demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art algorithms.

Tensor train-Karhunen-Loève expansion for continuous-indexed random fields using higher-order cumulant functions

The goals of this work are two-fold: firstly, to propose a new theoretical framework for representing random fields on a large class of multidimensional geometrical domain in the tensor train format; secondly, to develop a new algorithm framework for accurately computing the modes and the second and third-order cumulant tensors within moderate time. The core of the new theoretical framework is the tensor train decomposition of cumulant functions. This decomposition is accurately computed with a novel rank-revealing algorithm. Compared with existing Galerkin-type and collocation-type methods, the proposed computational procedure totally removes the need of selecting the basis functions or collocation points and the quadrature points, which not only greatly enhances adaptivity, but also avoids solving large-scale eigenvalue problems. Moreover, by computing with third-order cumulant functions, the new theoretical and algorithm frameworks show great potential for representing general non-Gaussian non-homogeneous random fields. Three numerical examples, including a three-dimensional random field discretization problem, illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm framework.
