Electronic phase transitions and superconductivity in ferroelectric Sn$_2$P$_2$Se$_6$ under pressure

Since there is both strong electron-phonon coupling during a ferroelectric/FE transition and superconducting/SC transition, it has been an important topic to explore superconductivity from the FE instability. Sn$_2$P$_2$Se$_6$ arouses broad attention due to its unique FE properties. Here, we reported the electronic phase transitions and superconductivity in this compound based on high-pressure electrical transport measurement, optical absorption spectroscopy and Raman based structural analysis. Upon compression, the conductivity of Sn$_2$P$_2$Se$_6$ was elevated monotonously, an electronic phase transition occurred near 5.4 GPa, revealed by optical absorption spectroscopy, and the insulating state is estimated to be fully suppressed near 15 GPa. Then, it started to show the signature of superconductivity near 15.3 GPa. The zero-resistance state was presented from 19.4 GPa, and the superconductivity was enhanced with pressure continuously. The magnetic field effect further confirmed the SC behavior and this compound had a $T_c$ of 5.4 K at 41.8 GPa with a zero temperature upper critical field of 6.55 T. The Raman spectra confirmed the structural origin of the electronic transition near 5.4 GPa, which should due to the transition from the paraelectric phase to the incommensurate phase, and suggested a possible first-order phase transition when the sample underwent the semiconductor-metal transition near 15 GPa. This work demonstrates the versatile physical properties in ferroelectrics and inspires the further investigation on the correlation between FE instability and SC in M$_2$P$_2$X$_6$ family.

A photon-level broadband dual-comb interferometer for turbulent open-air trace gases detection application

Open-path dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) significantly enhances our understanding of regional trace gases. However, due to technical challenges, cost considerations, and eye-safety regulations, its sensing range and flexibility remain limited. The photon-counting DCS demonstrated recently heralds potential innovations over open-path DCS. Nevertheless, a major challenge in open-air applications of this approach lies in accurately extracting information from the arrival time of photons that have traversed the turbulent atmosphere. Here, we demonstrate a photon-level dual-comb interferometer for field deployment in open-air environments, uniquely designed to counteract the impact of optical path-length variations caused by atmospheric turbulence and fiber-length wandering. Under variable optical path-length conditions, 20nm broadband absorption spectrum of H13C14N is acquired, with the power per comb line detected as low as 4 attowatt . Furthermore, this photon-level DCS achieves comb-line resolution with a quantum-noise-limited signal-to-noise (SNR). This paves the way for novel open-path DCS applications, including non-cooperative target sensing and sensing over a hundred-kilometers range, all within a portable, fieldable, eye-safety and low power consumption system.

Emergence of superconductivity near 11 K by suppressing the 3-fold helical-chain structure in noncentrosymmetric HgS

The trigonal $α$-HgS has a 3-fold helical chain structure, and is in form of a noncentrosymmetric $P3_121$ phase, known as the cinnabar phase. However, under pressure, the helical chains gradually approach and connect with each other, finally reconstructing into a centrosymmetric NaCl structure at 21 GPa. Superconductivity emerges just after this helical-nonhelical structural transition. The maximum critical temperature ($T_c$) reaches 11 K at 25.4 GPa, $T_c$ decreases with further compression, and is still 3.5 K at 44.8 GPa. Furthermore, the $T_c$-critical magnetic field ($B_{c2}$) relation exhibits multi-band features, with a $B_{c2}$ of 5.65 T at 0 K by two-band fitting. Raman spectra analysis demonstrates that phonon softening plays a key role in structural transition and the emergence of superconductivity. It is noted that HgS is the first reported IIB group metal sulfide superconductor and the only NaCl-type metal sulfide superconductor with a $T_c$ above 10 K. This work will inspire the exploration of superconductivity in other chiral systems and will extend our understanding of the versatile behavior in such kinds of materials.

Efficient multipartite entanglement purification with non-identical states

We present an efficient and general multipartite entanglement purification protocol (MEPP) for N-photon systems in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states with non-identical input states. As a branch of entanglement purification, besides the cases of successful purification, the recurrence MEPP actually has the reusable discarded items which are usually regarded as a failure. Our protocol contains two parts for bit-flip error correction. The first one is the conventional MEPP, corresponding successful cases. The second one includes two efficient approaches, recycling purification with entanglement link and direct residual entanglement purification, that can utilize discarded items. We also make a comparison between two approaches. Which method to use depends on initial input states, and in most cases the approach of direct residual purification is optimal for it not only may obtain a higher fidelity entangled state but also it does not require additional sophisticated links. In addition, for phase-flip errors, the discarded items still have available residual entanglement in the case of different input states. With these approaches, this MEPP has a higher efficiency than all previous MEPPs and it may have potential applications in the future long-distance quantum communications and networks.

Dual-comb spectroscopy over 100km open-air path

Satellite-based greenhouse gases (GHG) sensing technologies play a critical role in the study of global carbon emissions and climate change. However, none of the existing satellite-based GHG sensing technologies can achieve the measurement of broad bandwidth, high temporal-spatial resolution, and high sensitivity at the same time. Recently, dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been proposed as a superior candidate technology for GHG sensing because it can measure broadband spectra with high temporal-spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The main barrier to DCS's display on satellites is its short measurement distance in open air achieved thus far. Prior research has not been able to implement DCS over 20 km of open-air path. Here, by developing a bistatic setup using time-frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we have implemented DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. Our experiment successfully measured GHG with 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency and achieved a CO2 sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 minutes and <0.6 ppm in 36 minutes. Our results represent a significant step towards advancing the implementation of DCS as a satellite-based technology and improving technologies for GHG monitoring

PAM-HC: A Bayesian Nonparametric Construction of Hybrid Control for Randomized Clinical Trials Using External Data

It is highly desirable to borrow information from external data to augment a control arm in a randomized clinical trial, especially in settings where the sample size for the control arm is limited. However, a main challenge in borrowing information from external data is to accommodate potential heterogeneous subpopulations across the external and trial data. We apply a Bayesian nonparametric model called Plaid Atoms Model (PAM) to identify overlapping and unique subpopulations across datasets, with which we restrict the information borrowing to the common subpopulations. This forms a hybrid control (HC) that leads to more precise estimation of treatment effects Simulation studies demonstrate the robustness of the new method, and an application to an Atopic Dermatitis dataset shows improved treatment effect estimation.

Multi-interactive Feature Learning and a Full-time Multi-modality Benchmark for Image Fusion and Segmentation

Multi-modality image fusion and segmentation play a vital role in autonomous driving and robotic operation. Early efforts focus on boosting the performance for only one task, \emph{e.g.,} fusion or segmentation, making it hard to reach~`Best of Both Worlds'. To overcome this issue, in this paper, we propose a \textbf{M}ulti-\textbf{i}nteractive \textbf{F}eature learning architecture for image fusion and \textbf{Seg}mentation, namely SegMiF, and exploit dual-task correlation to promote the performance of both tasks. The SegMiF is of a cascade structure, containing a fusion sub-network and a commonly used segmentation sub-network. By slickly bridging intermediate features between two components, the knowledge learned from the segmentation task can effectively assist the fusion task. Also, the benefited fusion network supports the segmentation one to perform more pretentiously. Besides, a hierarchical interactive attention block is established to ensure fine-grained mapping of all the vital information between two tasks, so that the modality/semantic features can be fully mutual-interactive. In addition, a dynamic weight factor is introduced to automatically adjust the corresponding weights of each task, which can balance the interactive feature correspondence and break through the limitation of laborious tuning. Furthermore, we construct a smart multi-wave binocular imaging system and collect a full-time multi-modality benchmark with 15 annotated pixel-level categories for image fusion and segmentation. Extensive experiments on several public datasets and our benchmark demonstrate that the proposed method outputs visually appealing fused images and perform averagely $7.66\%$ higher segmentation mIoU in the real-world scene than the state-of-the-art approaches. The source code and benchmark are available at \url{https://github.com/JinyuanLiu-CV/SegMiF}.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and ferromagnetism in high entropy carbide ceramics

Generally, the superconductivity was expected to be absent in magnetic systems, but this reception was disturbed by unconventional superconductors, such as cuprates, iron-based superconductors and recently discovered nickelate, since their superconductivity is proposed to be related to the electron-electron interaction mediated by the spin fluctuation. However, the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism is still rare in conventional superconductors. In this work, we reported the coexistence of these two quantum orderings in high entropy carbide ceramics (Mo0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2V0.2W0.2)C0.9, (Ta0.25Ti0.25Nb0.25Zr0.25)C, and they are expected to be conventional superconductors. Clear magnetic hysteresis loop was observed in these high entropy carbides, indicating a ferromagnetic ground state. A sharp superconducting transition is observed in (Mo0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2V0.2W0.2)C0.9 with a Tc of 3.4 K and upper critical field of ~3.35 T. Meanwhile, superconductivity is suppressed to some extent and zero-resistance state disappears in (Ta0.25Ti0.25Nb0.25Zr0.25)C, in which stronger magnetism is presented. The upper critical field of (Ta0.25Ti0.25Nb0.25Zr0.25)C is only ~1.5 T, though they show higher transition temperature near 5.7 K. The ferromagnetism stems from the carbon vacancies which occurs often during the high temperature synthesis process. This work not just demonstrate the observation of superconductivity in high entropy carbide ceramics, but also provide alternative exotic platform to study the correlation between superconductivity and magnetism, and is of great benefit for the design of multifunctional electronic devices.

Ohmic dissipation during the formation of super-Earth

Super-Earth population, as one of the representatives of exoplanets, plays an important role in constraining the planet formation theories. According to the prediction from core-accretion models, super-Earths should be rare because their masses are in the range of the critical mass above which they would grow to be gas giants by runaway gas accretion. In this work, we investigate the effect of ohmic dissipation on the planetary thermal structure and cooling contraction as planets accrete gas from their surrounding disks. We find that the extra heating energy from Ohmic heating deposited into planetary envelopes can push the planetary radiative-convective boundaries inward and prevent the planets from cooling, and can even halt accretion. We explore parameter space to study the dependence of cooling timescale on the input parameters of the ohmic-dissipation model. Numerical results show that gas accretion can be halted before runaway gas accretion and the envelope mass is only several percent of planetary core mass for some parameter sets. Our results suggest that ohmic dissipation is a potential mechanism to delay the gas accretion and promote the formation of super-Earths. Future observations may help to constrain the importance of ohmic dissipation on the super-Earth formation.

Advances in quantum entanglement purification

Since its discovery, the quantum entanglement becomes a promising resource in quantum communication and computation. However, the entanglement is fragile due to the presence of noise in quantum channels. Entanglement purification is a powerful tool to distill high quality entangled states from the low quality entangled states. In this review, we present an overview of entanglement purification, including the basic entanglement purification theory, the entanglement purification protocols (EPPs) with linear optics, EPPs with cross-Kerr nonlinearities, hyperentanglement EPPs, deterministic EPPs, and measurement-based EPPs. We also review experimental progresses of EPPs in linear optics. Finally, we give the discussion on potential outlook for the future development of EPPs. This review may pave the way for practical implementations in future long-distance quantum communication and quantum network.

Device-independent quantum secure direct communication with single photon sources

Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) can directly transmit secrete messages through quantum channel. Device-independent (DI) QSDC can guarantee the communication security relying only on the observation of the Bell inequality violation, but not on any detailed description or trust of the inner workings of users' devices. In the paper, we propose a DI-QSDC protocol with practical high-efficient single photon sources. The communication parties construct the entanglement channel from single photons by adopting the heralded architecture, which makes the message leakage rate independent of the photon transmission loss. The secure communication distance and the practical communication efficiency of the current DI-QSDC protocol are about 6 times and 600 times of those in the original DI-QSDC protocol. Combining with the entanglement purification, the parties can construct the nearly perfect entanglement channel and completely eliminate the message leakage. This DI-QSDC protocol may have important application in future quantum communication field.

Evaluating Token-Level and Passage-Level Dense Retrieval Models for Math Information Retrieval

With the recent success of dense retrieval methods based on bi-encoders, studies have applied this approach to various interesting downstream retrieval tasks with good efficiency and in-domain effectiveness. Recently, we have also seen the presence of dense retrieval models in Math Information Retrieval (MIR) tasks, but the most effective systems remain classic retrieval methods that consider hand-crafted structure features. In this work, we try to combine the best of both worlds:\ a well-defined structure search method for effective formula search and efficient bi-encoder dense retrieval models to capture contextual similarities. Specifically, we have evaluated two representative bi-encoder models for token-level and passage-level dense retrieval on recent MIR tasks. Our results show that bi-encoder models are highly complementary to existing structure search methods, and we are able to advance the state-of-the-art on MIR datasets.

Burstiness and information spreading in the active particles systems

We construct the temporal network using the two-dimensional active particle systems which are described by the Vicsek model. The bursts of the interevent times for a specific pair of particles are investigated numerically. We find that for different noise strength, the distribution of the interevent times of a target edge follows by a heavy-tail, revealing a strong burstiness of the signals. To further characterize the nature of the burstiness, the burstiness parameter and the memory coefficient are calculated. The results show that near the critical points of the Vicsek model, the burstiness parameters reach the minimum values for each density, indicating a relation between the phase transition of the Vicsek model and the bursty nature of the signals. Besides, the memory plays a negligible role in the burstiness. Further, we investigate the spreading dynamics on our temporal network with the susceptible-infected model, and observe a positive correlation between the burstiness and the information spreading dynamics.

Unusual slow energy relaxation induced by mobile discrete breathers in one-dimensional lattices with next-nearest-neighbor coupling

We study the energy relaxation process in one-dimensional (1D) lattices with next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) couplings. This relaxation is produced by adding damping (absorbing conditions) to the boundary (free-end) of the lattice. Compared to the 1D lattices with on-site potentials, the properties of discrete breathers (DBs) that are spatially localized intrinsic modes are quite unusual with the NNN couplings included, i.e., these DBs are mobile, and thus they can interact with both the phonons and the boundaries of the lattice. For the interparticle interactions of harmonic and Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou-$β$ (FPUT-$β$) types, we find two crossovers of relaxation in general, i.e., a first crossover from the stretched-exponential to the regular exponential relaxation occurring in a short timescale, and a further crossover from the exponential to the power-law relaxation taking place in a long timescale. The first and second relaxations are universal, but the final power-law relaxation is strongly influenced by the properties of DBs, e.g. the scattering processes of DBs with phonons and boundaries in the FPUT-$β$ type systems make the power-law decay relatively faster than that in the counterparts of the harmonic type systems under the same coupling. Our results present new information and insights for understanding the slow energy relaxation in cooling the lattices.

Backbone and shortest-path exponents of the two-dimensional $Q$-state Potts model

We present a Monte Carlo study of the backbone and the shortest-path exponents of the two-dimensional $Q$-state Potts model in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn bond representation. We first use cluster algorithms to simulate the critical Potts model on the square lattice and obtain the backbone exponents $d_{\rm B} = 1.732 \, 0(3)$ and $1.794(2)$ for $Q=2,3$ respectively. However, for large $Q$, the study suffers from serious critical slowing down and slowly converging finite-size corrections. To overcome these difficulties, we consider the O$(n)$ loop model on the honeycomb lattice in the densely packed phase, which is regarded to correspond to the critical Potts model with $Q=n^2$. With a highly efficient cluster algorithm, we determine from domains enclosed by the loops $d_{\rm B} =1.643\,39(5), 1.732\,27(8), 1.793\,8(3), 1.838\,4(5), 1.875\,3(6)$ for $Q = 1, 2, 3, 2 \! + \! \sqrt{3}, 4$, respectively, and $d_{\rm min} = 1.094\,5(2), 1.067\,5(3), 1.047\,5(3), 1.032\,2(4)$ for $Q=2,3, 2+\sqrt{3}, 4$ respectively. Our estimates significantly improve over the existing results for both $d_{\rm B}$ and $d_{\rm min}$. Finally, by studying finite-size corrections in backbone-related quantities, we conjecture an exact formula as a function of $n$ for the leading correction exponent.

Target-aware Dual Adversarial Learning and a Multi-scenario Multi-Modality Benchmark to Fuse Infrared and Visible for Object Detection

This study addresses the issue of fusing infrared and visible images that appear differently for object detection. Aiming at generating an image of high visual quality, previous approaches discover commons underlying the two modalities and fuse upon the common space either by iterative optimization or deep networks. These approaches neglect that modality differences implying the complementary information are extremely important for both fusion and subsequent detection task. This paper proposes a bilevel optimization formulation for the joint problem of fusion and detection, and then unrolls to a target-aware Dual Adversarial Learning (TarDAL) network for fusion and a commonly used detection network. The fusion network with one generator and dual discriminators seeks commons while learning from differences, which preserves structural information of targets from the infrared and textural details from the visible. Furthermore, we build a synchronized imaging system with calibrated infrared and optical sensors, and collect currently the most comprehensive benchmark covering a wide range of scenarios. Extensive experiments on several public datasets and our benchmark demonstrate that our method outputs not only visually appealing fusion but also higher detection mAP than the state-of-the-art approaches.
