Effects of Self-gravity on Mass-loss of the Post-impact Super-Earths

Kepler's observations show most of the exoplanets are super-Earths. The formation of super-Earth is generally related to the atmospheric mass loss that is crucial in the planetary structure and evolution. The shock driven by the giant impact will heat the planet, resulting in the atmosphere escape. We focus on whether self-gravity changes the efficiency of mass loss. Without self-gravity, if the impactor mass is comparable to the envelope mass, there is a significant mass-loss. The radiative-convective boundary will shift inward by self-gravity. As the temperature and envelope mass increase, the situation becomes more prominent, resulting in a heavier envelope. Therefore, the impactor mass will increase to motivate the significant mass loss, as the self-gravity is included. With the increase of envelope mass, the self-gravity is particularly important.

Supersensitivity of Kerr phase estimation with two-mode squeezed vacuum states

We analytically investigate the sensitivity of Kerr nonlinear phase estimation in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two-mode squeezed vacuum states. We find that such a metrological scheme could access a sensitivity scaling over the Boixo \emph{et al.}'s generalized sensitivity limit [S. Boixo \emph{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 090401 (2007)], which is saturable with celebrated NOON states. We also show that parity detection is a quasioptimal measurement which can nearly saturate the quantum Cramér-Rao bound in the aforementioned situation. Moreover, we further clarify the supersensitive performance observed in the above scheme is due to the restriction of Boixo \emph{et al}.'s generalized sensitivity limit (BGSL) to probe states with fixed photon numbers. To conquer this problem, we generalize the BGSL into the case with probe states of a fluctuating number of photons, to which our scheme belongs.

A general improvement in the WENO-Z-type schemes

A new type of finite volume WENO schemes for hyperbolic problems was devised in [36] by introducing the order-preserving (OP) criterion. In this continuing work, we extend the OP criterion to the WENO-Z-type schemes. We firstly rewrite the formulas of the Z-type weights in a uniform form from a mapping perspective inspired by extensive numerical observations. Accrodingly, we build the concept of the locally order-preserving (LOP) mapping which is an extension of the order-preserving (OP) mapping and the resultant improved WENO-Z-type schemes are denoted as LOP-GMWENO-X. There are four major advantages of the LOP-GMWENO-X schemes superior to the existing WENO-Z-type schemes. Firstly, the new schemes can amend the serious drawback of the existing WENO-Z-type schemes that most of them suffer from either producing severe spurious oscillations or failing to obtain high resolutions in long calculations of hyperbolic problems with discontinuities. Secondly, they can maintain considerably high resolutions on solving problems with high-order critical points at long output times. Thirdly, they can obtain evidently higher resolution in the region with high-frequency but smooth waves. Finally, they can significantly decrease the post-shock oscillations for simulations of some 2D problems with strong shock waves. Extensive benchmark examples are conducted to illustrate these advantages.

Multi-Kink Quantile Regression for Longitudinal Data with Application to the Progesterone Data Analysis

Motivated by investigating the relationship between progesterone and the days in a menstrual cycle in a longitudinal study, we propose a multi-kink quantile regression model for longitudinal data analysis. It relaxes the linearity condition and assumes different regression forms in different regions of the domain of the threshold covariate. In this paper, we first propose a multi-kink quantile regression for longitudinal data. Two estimation procedures are proposed to estimate the regression coefficients and the kink points locations: one is a computationally efficient profile estimator under the working independence framework while the other one considers the within-subject correlations by using the unbiased generalized estimation equation approach. The selection consistency of the number of kink points and the asymptotic normality of two proposed estimators are established. Secondly, we construct a rank score test based on partial subgradients for the existence of kink effect in longitudinal studies. Both the null distribution and the local alternative distribution of the test statistic have been derived. Simulation studies show that the proposed methods have excellent finite sample performance. In the application to the longitudinal progesterone data, we identify two kink points in the progesterone curves over different quantiles and observe that the progesterone level remains stable before the day of ovulation, then increases quickly in five to six days after ovulation and then changes to stable again or even drops slightly

The Critical Core Mass of Rotating Planets

The gravitational harmonics measured from Juno and Cassini spacecrafts help us to specify the internal structure and chemical elements of Jupiter and Saturn, respectively. However, we still do not know much about the impact of rotation on the planetary internal structure as well as their formation. The centrifugal force induced by rotation deforms the planetary shape and partially counteracts the gravitational force. Thus, rotation will affect the critical core mass of the exoplanet. Once the atmospheric mass becomes comparable to the critical core mass, the planet will enter the runaway accretion phase and becomes a gas giant. We have confirmed that the critical core masses of rotating planets depend on the stiffness of the polytrope, the outer boundary conditions, and the thickness of the isothermal layer. The critical core mass with Bondi boundary condition is determined by the surface properties. The critical core mass of a rotating planet will increase with the core gravity (i.e., the innermost density). For the Hill boundary condition, the soft polytrope shares the same properties as planets with Bondi boundary condition. Since the total mass for planets with Hill boundary condition increases with the decrease of the polytropic index, higher core gravity is required for rotating planets. As a result, the critical core mass in the stiff Hill model sharply increases. The rotation effects become more important when the radiative and convective regions coexist. Besides, the critical core mass of planets with Hill (Bondi) boundary increases noticeably as the radiative layer becomes thinner (thicker).

Locally Order-Preserving Mapping for WENO Methods

In our previous studies [17, 18], the commonly reported issue that most of the existing mapped WENO schemes suffer from either losing high resolutions or generating spurious oscillations in long-run simulations of hyperbolic problems has been successfully addressed, by devising the improved mapped WENO schemes, namely MOP-WENO-X, where "X" stands for the version of the existing mapped WENO scheme. However, all the MOP-WENO-X schemes bring about the serious deficiency that their resolutions in the region with high-frequency but smooth waves are dramatically decreased compared to their associated WENO-X schemes. The purpose of this paper is to overcome this drawback. We firstly present the definition of the locally order-preserving (LOP) mapping. Then, by using a new proposed posteriori adaptive technique, we apply this LOP property to obtain the new mappings from those of the WENO-X schemes. The essential idea of the posteriori adaptive technique is to identify the global stencil in which the existing mappings fail to preserve the LOP property, and then replace the mapped weights with the weights of the classic WENO-JS scheme to recover the LOP property. We build the resultant mapped WENO schemes and denote them as LOP-WENO-X. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the resolutions in the region with high-frequency but smooth waves of the LOP-WENO-X schemes are similar or even better than those of their associated WENO-X schemes and naturally much higher than the MOP-WENO-X schemes. Furthermore, the LOP-WENO-X schemes gain all the great advantages of the MOP-WENO-X schemes, such as attaining high resolutions and in the meantime preventing spurious oscillations near discontinuities when solving the one-dimensional linear advection problems with long output times, and significantly reducing the post-shock oscillations in the simulations of the two-dimensional problems with shock waves.

Superconductivity in compressed SnPS3

Metal phosphorous trichalcogenides, MPX3, is a group of van der Waals materials with rich electronic properties and even exotic magnetic behavior. These properties can be well manipulated by pressure/strain via effective control of interlayer interaction, lattice parameters and crystal structure. Superconducting transition has been observed in compressed FePSe3. However, it is the only one superconductor reported in the large MPX3 family. Is it possible to achieve superconducting transition in other MPX3 compounds, especially in a trisulfide compound? In this work, we tentatively compressed the SnPS3 (an insulator with large band gap at ambient condition) up to 48.9 GPa, and managed to achieve the superconducting transition above 31.7 GPa with Tc ranging from ~2.2 K to ~2.8 K. The upper critical field is estimated to be ~3.03 T at 40.5 GPa. Optical absorption measurements together with Raman spectroscopy show a series of transitions under pressure, which is well consistent with the electric transport results. This work provides direct experimental evidence that SnPS3 undergoes an insulator-metal transition near 31.7 GPa. More importantly, it demonstrates that superconductivity can exist in MPS3 compounds, which not only further enriches the electronic properties of this kind of material but also paves a new avenue to explore the abundant emergence phenomena in the whole MPX3 family, and it also benefits the study of superconductor mechanism.

Insulator-to-superconductor transition in quasi-one-dimensional HfS3 under pressure

Various transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTC) show the charge-density-wave and superconductivity, which provide an ideal platform to study the correlation between these two orderings and the mechanism of superconductivity. Currently, almost all metallic TMTC compounds can show superconductivity either at ambient pressure or at high pressure. However, most TMTC compounds are semiconductors and even insulators. Does the superconductivity exist in any non-metal TMTC compound? In this work, we managed to manipulate the electronic behavior of highly insulating HfS3 in term of pressure. HfS3 underwent an insulator-semiconductor transition near 17 GPa with a band gap reduce of ~1 eV. The optical absorption and Raman measurement provide the consistent results, suggesting the structural origin of the electronic transition. Upon further compression, HfS3 becomes a superconductor. The superconducting transition was initialized as early as 50.6 GPa and the zero-resistance is reached above 91.2 GPa. The superconducting behavior is further confirmed by both the magnetic field effect and current effect. This work sheds the light that all TMTC may be superconductors, and opens a new avenue to explore the abundant emergence phenomena in TMTC material family.

Efficient Learning of Quadratic Variance Function Directed Acyclic Graphs via Topological Layers

Directed acyclic graph (DAG) models are widely used to represent causal relationships among random variables in many application domains. This paper studies a special class of non-Gaussian DAG models, where the conditional variance of each node given its parents is a quadratic function of its conditional mean. Such a class of non-Gaussian DAG models are fairly flexible and admit many popular distributions as special cases, including Poisson, Binomial, Geometric, Exponential, and Gamma. To facilitate learning, we introduce a novel concept of topological layers, and develop an efficient DAG learning algorithm. It first reconstructs the topological layers in a hierarchical fashion and then recoveries the directed edges between nodes in different layers, which requires much less computational cost than most existing algorithms in literature. Its advantage is also demonstrated in a number of simulated examples, as well as its applications to two real-life datasets, including an NBA player statistics data and a cosmetic sales data collected by Alibaba.

An extension of the order-preserving mapping to the WENO-Z-type schemes

In our latest studies, by introducing the novel order-preserving (OP) criterion, we have successfully addressed the widely concerned issue of the previously published mapped weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes that it is rather difficult to achieve high resolutions on the premise of removing spurious oscillations for long-run simulations of the hyperbolic systems. In the present study, we extend the OP criterion to the WENO-Z-type schemes as the forementioned issue has also been extensively observed numerically for these schemes. Firstly, we innovatively present the concept of the generalized mapped WENO schemes by rewriting the Z-type weights in a uniform formula from the perspective of the mapping relation. Then, we naturally introduce the OP criterion to improve the WENO-Z-type schemes, and the resultant schemes are denoted as MOP-GMWENO-X. Finally, extensive numerical experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the benefits of these new schemes. We draw the conclusion that, the convergence propoties of the proposed schemes are equivalent to the corresponding WENO-X schemes. The major benefit of the new schemes is that they have the capacity to achieve high resolutions and simultaneously remove spurious oscillations for long simulations. The new schemes have the additional benefit that they can greatly decrease the post-shock oscillations on solving 2D Euler problems with strong shock waves.

In situ formation of super-Earth/sub-Neptune driven by the planetary rotation

Kepler's observation shows that many of the detected planets are super-Earths. They are inside a range of critical masses overlapping the core masses (2-20 $M_{\bigoplus}$), which would trigger the runaway accretion and develop the gas giants. Thus, super-Earths/sub-Neptunes can be formed by restraining runaway growth of gaseous envelopes. We assess the effect of planetary rotation in delaying the mass growth. The centrifugal force, induced by spin, will offset a part of the gravitational force and deform the planet. Tracking the change in structure, we find that the temperature at the radiative-convective boundary (RCB) is approximate to the boundary temperature. Since rotation reduces the radiation energy densities in the convective and radiative layers, RCB will penetrate deeper. The cooling luminosity would decrease. Under this condition, the evolutionary timescale can exceed the disk lifetime (10 Myr), and a super-Earth/sub-Neptune could be formed after undergoing additional mass loss processes. In the dusty atmosphere, even a lower angular velocity can also promote a super-Earth/sub-Neptune forming. Therefore, we conclude that rotation can slow down the planet's cooling and then promote a super-Earth/sub-Neptune forming.

Active control of transport through nanopores

Passive particle transport through narrow channels is well studied, while for active particle systems, it is not well understood. Here, we demonstrate the active control of the transport through a nanopore via mean-field analysis and molecular dynamics simulations. We prove that the active force enhances the transport efficiency with an effective diffusion coefficient $D_{eff} = D_t (1 + Pe^2/6)$, where $D_t$ is the translational diffusion coefficient, and $Pe$ is the Péclet number that determines the strength of the active force. For the number of particles inside the channel, it experiences subdiffusion at short times and then turns to normal at longer times. Finally, we extend our research for several sinusoidal shapes of the channel surface. More particles are trapped in the channel if the roughness of the channel surface is increased, resulting in fewer particles are transported from one side of the channel to the other.

Towards building the OP-Mapped WENO schemes: A general methodology

A serious and ubiquitous issue in existing mapped WENO schemes is that most of them can hardly preserve high resolutions and in the meantime prevent spurious oscillations on solving hyperbolic conservation laws with long output times. Our goal in this article is to address this widely concerned problem [3, 4, 15, 29, 16, 18]. In our previous work [18], the order-preserving (OP) criterion was originally introduced and carefully used to devise a new mapped WENO scheme that performs satisfactorily in long-run simulations, and hence it was indicated that the OP criterion plays a critical role in the maintenance of low-dissipation and robustness for the mapped WENO schemes. Thus, in our present work, we firstly define the family of the mapped WENO schemes, whose mappings meet the OP criterion, as OP-Mapped WENO. Next, we attentively take a closer look at the mappings of various existing mapped WENO schemes and devise a general formula for them. It helps us to extend the OP criterion into the design of the improved mappings. Then, we propose the generalized implementation of obtaining a group of OP-Mapped WENO schemes, named MOP-WENO-X as they are developed from the existing mapped WENO-X schemes, where the notation "X" is used to identify the version of the existing mapped WENO scheme. Finally, extensive numerical experiments and comparisons with competing schemes are conducted to demonstrate the enhanced performances of the MOP-WENO-X schemes.

Double-port measurements for robust quantum optical metrology

It has been proposed and demonstrated that path-entangled Fock states (PEFSs) are robust against photon loss over NOON states [S. D. Huver \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{78}, 063828 (2008)]. However, the demonstration was based on a measurement scheme which was yet to be implemented in experiments. In this work, we quantitatively illustrate the advantage of PEFSs over NOON states in the presence of photon losses by analytically calculating the quantum Fisher information. To realize such an advantage in practice, we then investigate the achievable sensitivities by employing three types of feasible measurements: parity, photon-number-resolving, and homodyne measurements. We here apply a double-port measurement strategy where the photons at each output port of the interferometer are simultaneously detected with the aforementioned types of measurements.

An efficient mapped WENO scheme using approximate constant mapping

We present a novel mapping approach for WENO schemes through the use of an approximate constant mapping function which is constructed by employing an approximation of the classic signum function. The new approximate constant mapping function is designed to meet the overall criteria for a proper mapping function required in the design of the WENO-PM6 scheme. The WENO-PM6 scheme was proposed to overcome the potential loss of accuracy of the WENO-M scheme which was developed to recover the optimal convergence order of the WENO-JS scheme at critical points. Our new mapped WENO scheme, denoted as WENO-ACM, maintains almost all advantages of the WENO-PM6 scheme, including low dissipation and high resolution, while decreases the number of mathematical operations remarkably in every mapping process leading to a significant improvement of efficiency. The convergence rates of the WENO-ACM scheme have been shown through one-dimensional linear advection equation with various initial conditions. Numerical results of one-dimensional Euler equations for the Riemann problems, the Mach 3 shock-density wave interaction and the Woodward-Colella interacting blastwaves are improved in comparison with the results obtained by the WENO-JS, WENO-M and WENO-PM6 schemes. Numerical experiments with two-dimensional problems as the 2D Riemann problem, the shock-vortex interaction, the 2D explosion problem, the double Mach reflection and the forward-facing step problem modeled via the two dimensional Euler equations have been conducted to demonstrate the high resolution and the effectiveness of the WENO-ACM scheme. The WENO-ACM scheme provides significantly better resolution than the WENO-M scheme and slightly better resolution than the WENO-PM6 scheme, and compared to the WENO-M and WENO-PM6 schemes, the extra computational cost is reduced by more than 83% and 93%, respectively.

A new mapped WENO scheme using order-preserving mapping

Existing mapped WENO schemes can hardly prevent spurious oscillations while preserving high resolutions at long output times. We reveal in this paper the essential reason for such phenomena. It is actually caused by that the mapping function in these schemes can not preserve the order of the nonlinear weights of the stencils. The nonlinear weights may be increased for non-smooth stencils and be decreased for smooth stencils. It is then indicated to require the set of mapping functions to be Order-Preserving in mapped WENO schemes. Therefore, we propose a new mapped WENO scheme with a set of mapping functions to be order-preserving which exhibits a remarkable advantage over the mapped WENO schemes in references. For long output time simulations, the new scheme has the capacity to attain high resolutions and avoid spurious oscillations near discontinuities meanwhile.

A modified adaptive improved mapped WENO method

We propose a new family of mapped WENO schemes by using several adaptive control functions and a smoothing approximation of the signum function. The proposed schemes introduce the adaptivity and admit an extensive permitted range of the parameters in the mapping functions. Consequently, they have the capacity to achieve optimal convergence rates, even near critical points. Particularly, one of these new schemes with fine-tuned parameters illustrates a significant advantage when solving problems with discontinuities. It produces numerical solutions with high resolution without generating spurious oscillations, especially for long output times.

High efficient multipartite entanglement purification using hyperentanglement

Multipartite entanglement plays an important role in controlled quantum teleportation, quantum secret sharing, quantum metrology and some other important quantum information branches. However, the maximally multipartite entangled state will degrade into the mixed state because of the noise. We present an efficient multipartite entanglement purification protocol (EPP) which can distill the high quality entangled states from low quality entangled states for N-photon systems in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state in only linear optics. After performing the protocol, the spatial-mode entanglement is used to purify the polarization entanglement and one pair of high quality polarization entangled state will be obtained. This EPP has several advantages. Firstly, with the same purification success probability, this EPP only requires one pair of multipartite GHZ state, while existing EPPs usually require two pairs of multipartite GHZ state. Secondly, if consider the practical transmission and detector efficiency, this EPP may be extremely useful for the ratio of purification efficiency is increased rapidly with both the number of photons and the transmission distance. Thirdly, this protocol requires linear optics and does not add additional measurement operations, so that it is feasible for experiment. All these advantages will make this protocol have potential application for future quantum information processing.
