Improving the Ranging Performance of Random ISAC Signals Through Pulse Shaping Design

In this paper, we propose a novel pulse shaping design for single-carrier integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) transmission. Due to the communication information embedded in the ISAC signal, the resulting auto-correlation function (ACF) is determined by both the information-conveying random symbol sequence and the signaling pulse, where the former leads to random fluctuations in the sidelobes of the ACF, impairing the range estimation performance. To overcome this challenge, we first analyze the statistical characteristics of the random ACF under the symbol-wise pulse shaping (SWPS) regime. As a step further, we formulate an optimization problem to design ISAC pulse shaping filters, which minimizes the average integrated sidelobe level ratio (ISLR) while meeting the Nyquist criterion, subject to power and bandwidth constraints. We then show that the problem can be recast as a convex quadratic program by expressing it in the frequency domain, which can be readily solved through standard tools. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed pulse shaping design achieves substantial ranging sidelobe reduction compared to the celebrated root-raised cosine (RRC) pulse shaping, given that the communication throughput is unchanged.

Dual-Functional Waveform Design with Local Sidelobe Suppression via OTFS Signaling

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is viewed as a key technology in future wireless networks. One of the main challenges in realizing ISAC is developing dual-functional waveforms that can communicate with communication receivers and perform radar sensing simultaneously. In this paper, we consider the joint design of a dual-functional orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) signal and a receiving filter for the ISAC system. The problem of ISAC waveform design is formulated as the minimization of the weighted integrated sidelobe level (WISL) of the ambiguity function and the interference term from ISAC waveform, with constraints on signal-to-noise ratio loss. The majorization-minimization algorithm combined with alternating iterative minimization is implemented to solve the optimization problem. Simulation results show that the WISL and the interference term can be significantly decreased to guarantee achievable data rates and detection performance.

Fundamental Limits of Communication-Assisted Sensing in ISAC Systems

In this paper, we introduce a novel communication-assisted sensing (CAS) framework that explores the potential coordination gains offered by the integrated sensing and communication technique. The CAS system endows users with beyond-line-of-the-sight sensing capabilities, supported by a dual-functional base station that enables simultaneous sensing and communication. To delve into the system's fundamental limits, we characterize the information-theoretic framework of the CAS system in terms of rate-distortion theory. We reveal the achievable overall distortion between the target's state and the reconstructions at the end-user, referred to as the sensing quality of service, within a special case where the distortion metric is separable for sensing and communication processes. As a case study, we employ a typical application to demonstrate distortion minimization under the ISAC signaling strategy, showcasing the potential of CAS in enhancing sensing capabilities.

GI-Free Pilot-Aided Channel Estimation for Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing Systems

The recently developed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) can achieve full diversity in doubly selective channels, providing a comprehensive sparse representation of the delay-Doppler domain channel. Thus, accurate channel estimation is feasible by using just one pilot symbol. However, traditional AFDM channel estimation schemes necessitate the use of guard intervals (GI) to mitigate data-pilot interference, leading to spectral efficiency degradation. In this paper, we propose a GI-free pilot-aided channel estimation algorithm for AFDM systems, which improves spectral efficiency significantly. To mitigate the interference between the pilot and data symbols caused by the absence of GI, we perform joint interference cancellation, channel estimation, and signal detection iterately. Simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed method can approach the ideal case with perfect channel estimation.

OTFS-based Robust MMSE Precoding Design in Over-the-air Computation

Over-the-air computation (AirComp), as a data aggregation method that can improve network efficiency by exploiting the superposition characteristics of wireless channels, has received much attention recently. Meanwhile, the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation can provide a strong Doppler resilience and facilitate reliable transmission for high-mobility communications. Hence, in this work, we investigate an OTFS-based AirComp system in the presence of time-frequency dual-selective channels. In particular, we commence from the development of a novel transmission framework for the considered system, where the pilot signal is sent together with data, and the channel estimation is implemented according to the echo from the access point to the sensor, thereby reducing the overhead of channel state information (CSI) feedback. Hereafter, based on the CSI estimated from the previous frame, a robust precoding matrix aiming at minimizing mean square error in the current frame is designed, which takes into account the estimation error from the receiver noise and the outdated CSI. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust precoding scheme by comparing it with the non-robust precoding. The performance gain is more obvious in a high signal-to-noise ratio in case of large channel estimation errors.

Fundamentals of Delay-Doppler Communications: Practical Implementation and Extensions to OTFS

The recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, which is a typical Delay-Doppler (DD) communication scheme, has attracted significant attention thanks to its appealing performance over doubly-selective channels. In this paper, we present the fundamentals of general DD communications from the viewpoint of the Zak transform. We start our study by constructing DD domain basis functions aligning with the time-frequency (TF)-consistency condition, which are globally quasi-periodic and locally twisted-shifted. We unveil that these features are translated to unique signal structures in both time and frequency, which are beneficial for communication purposes. Then, we focus on the practical implementations of DD Nyquist communications, where we show that rectangular windows achieve perfect DD orthogonality, while truncated periodic signals can obtain sufficient DD orthogonality. Particularly, smoothed rectangular window with excess bandwidth can result in a slightly worse orthogonality but better pulse localization in the DD domain. Furthermore, we present a practical pulse shaping framework for general DD communications and derive the corresponding input-output relation under various shaping pulses. Our numerical results agree with our derivations and also demonstrate advantages of DD communications over conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM).

Probabilistic On-Demand Charging Scheduling for ISAC-Assisted WRSNs with Multiple Mobile Charging Vehicles

The internet of things (IoT) based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) face an energy shortage challenge that could be overcome by the novel wireless power transfer (WPT) technology. The combination of WSNs and WPT is known as wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs), with the charging efficiency and charging scheduling being the primary concerns. Therefore, this paper proposes a probabilistic on-demand charging scheduling for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)-assisted WRSNs with multiple mobile charging vehicles (MCVs) that addresses three parts. First, it considers the four attributes with their probability distributions to balance the charging load on each MCV. The distributions are residual energy of charging node, distance from MCV to charging node, degree of charging node, and charging node betweenness centrality. Second, it considers the efficient charging factor strategy to partially charge network nodes. Finally, it employs the ISAC concept to efficiently utilize the wireless resources to reduce the traveling cost of each MCV and to avoid the charging conflicts between them. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms cutting-edge protocols in terms of energy usage efficiency, charging delay, survival rate, and travel distance.

Frame Structure and Protocol Design for Sensing-Assisted NR-V2X Communications

The emergence of the fifth-generation (5G) New Radio (NR) technology has provided unprecedented opportunities for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) networks, enabling enhanced quality of services. However, high-mobility V2X networks require frequent handovers and acquiring accurate channel state information (CSI) necessitates the utilization of pilot signals, leading to increased overhead and reduced communication throughput. To address this challenge, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) techniques have been employed at the base station (gNB) within vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) networks, aiming to minimize overhead and improve spectral efficiency. In this study, we propose novel frame structures that incorporate ISAC signals for three crucial stages in the NR-V2X system: initial access, connected mode, and beam failure and recovery. These new frame structures employ 75% fewer pilots and reduce reference signals by 43.24%, capitalizing on the sensing capability of ISAC signals. Through extensive link-level simulations, we demonstrate that our proposed approach enables faster beam establishment during initial access, higher throughput and more precise beam tracking in connected mode with reduced overhead, and expedited detection and recovery from beam failures. Furthermore, the numerical results obtained from our simulations showcase enhanced spectrum efficiency, improved communication performance and minimal overhead, validating the effectiveness of the proposed ISAC-based techniques in NR V2I networks.

Optimal BER Minimum Precoder Design for OTFS-Based ISAC Systems

This paper investigates the bit error rate (BER) minimum pre-coder design for an orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS)-based integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, which is considered as a promising technique for enabling future wireless networks. In particular, the BER minimum problem takes into account the maximized available transmission power and the required sensing performance. We devise the precoder from the perspective of delay-Doppler (DD) domain by exploiting the equivalent DD channel. To address the non-convex design problem, we resort to minimizing the lower bound of the derived average BER. Afterwards, we propose a computationally iterative method to solve the dual problem at low cost. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed precoder and reveal the interplay between sensing and communication for dual-functional precoder design.

From OTFS to DD-ISAC: Integrating Sensing and Communications in the Delay Doppler Domain

Next-generation vehicular networks are expected to provide the capability of robust environmental sensing in addition to reliable communications to meet intelligence requirements. A promising solution is the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology, which performs both functionalities using the same spectrum and hardware resources. Most existing works on ISAC consider the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. Nevertheless, vehicle motion introduces Doppler shift, which breaks the subcarrier orthogonality and leads to performance degradation. The recently proposed Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation, which exploits various advantages of Delay Doppler (DD) channels, has been shown to support reliable communication in high-mobility scenarios. Moreover, the DD waveform can directly interact with radar sensing parameters, which are actually delay and Doppler shifts. This paper investigates the advantages of applying the DD communication waveform to ISAC. Specifically, we first provide a comprehensive overview of implementing DD communications, based on which several advantages of DD-ISAC over OFDM-based ISAC are revealed, including transceiver designs and the ambiguity function. Furthermore, a detailed performance comparison are presented, where the target detection probability and the mean squared error (MSE) performance are also studied. Finally, some challenges and opportunities of DD-ISAC are also provided.

On the Pulse Shaping for Delay-Doppler Communications

In this paper, we study the pulse shaping for delay-Doppler (DD) communications. We start with constructing a basis function in the DD domain following the properties of the Zak transform. Particularly, we show that the constructed basis functions are globally quasi-periodic while locally twisted-shifted, and their significance in time and frequency domains are then revealed. We further analyze the ambiguity function of the basis function, and show that fully localized ambiguity function can be achieved by constructing the basis function using periodic signals. More importantly, we prove that time and frequency truncating such basis functions naturally leads to approximate delay and Doppler orthogonalities, if the truncating windows are periodic within the support. Motivated by this, we propose a DD Nyquist pulse shaping scheme considering signals with periodicity. Finally, our conclusions are verified by using various strictly or approximately periodic pulses.

Probabilistic Constellation Shaping for OFDM-Based ISAC Signaling

Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) has garnered significant attention as a promising technology for the upcoming sixth-generation wireless communication systems (6G). In pursuit of this goal, a common strategy is that a unified waveform, such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), should serve dual-functional roles by enabling simultaneous sensing and communications (S&C) operations. However, the sensing performance of an OFDM communication signal is substantially affected by the randomness of the data symbols mapped from bit streams. Therefore, achieving a balance between preserving communication capability (i.e., the randomness) while improving sensing performance remains a challenging task. To cope with this issue, in this paper we analyze the ambiguity function of the OFDM communication signal modulated by random data. Subsequently, a probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) method is proposed to devise the probability distributions of constellation points, which is able to strike a scalable S&C tradeoff of the random transmitted signal. Finally, the superiority of the proposed PCS method over conventional uniformly distributed constellations is validated through numerical simulations.

From Torch to Projector: Fundamental Tradeoff of Integrated Sensing and Communications

Sensing and communications (S&C) have been historically developed in parallel. In recent decade, they have been evolving from separation to integration, giving rise to the integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) paradigm, that has been recognized as one of the six key 6G usage scenarios. Despite the plethora of research works dedicated to ISAC signal processing, the fundamental performance limits of S&C remain widely unexplored in an ISAC system. In this tutorial paper, we attempt to summarize the recent research findings in characterizing the performance boundary of ISAC systems and the resulting S&C tradeoff from an information-theoretical viewpoint. We begin with a folklore "torch metaphor" that depicts the resource competition mechanism of S&C. Then, we elaborate on the fundamental capacity-distortion (C-D) theory, indicating the incompleteness of this metaphor. Towards that end, we further elaborate on the S&C tradeoff by discussing a special case within the C-D framework, namely the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB)-rate region. In particular, S&C have preference discrepancies over both the subspace occupied by the transmitted signal and the adopted codebook, leading to a "projector metaphor" complementary to the ISAC torch analogy. We also present two practical design examples by leveraging the lessons learned from fundamental theories. Finally, we conclude the paper by identifying a number of open challenges.

Rate-Splitting and Sum-DoF for the K-User MISO Broadcast Channel with Mixed CSIT and Order-(K-1) Messages

In this paper, we propose a rate-splitting design and characterize the sum-degrees-of-freedom (DoF) for the K-user multiple-input-single-output (MISO) broadcast channel with mixed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and order-(K-1) messages, where mixed CSIT refers to the delayed and imperfect-current CSIT, and order-(K-1) message refers to the message desired by K-1 users simultaneously. In particular, for the sum-DoF lower bound, we propose a rate-splitting scheme embedding with retrospective interference alignment. In addition, we propose a matching sum-DoF upper bound via genie signalings and extremal inequality. Opposed to existing works for K=2, our results show that the sum-DoF is saturated with CSIT quality when CSIT quality thresholds are satisfied for K>2.

Waveform Design for Communication-Assisted Sensing in 6G Perceptive Networks

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technique has the potential to achieve coordination gain by exploiting the mutual assistance between sensing and communication (S&C) functions. While the sensing-assisted communications (SAC) technology has been extensively studied for high-mobility scenarios, the communication-assisted sensing (CAS) counterpart remains widely unexplored. This paper presents a waveform design framework for CAS in 6G perceptive networks, aiming to attain an optimal sensing quality of service (QoS) at the user after the target's parameters successively ``pass-through'' the S$\&$C channels. In particular, a pair of transmission schemes, namely, separated S&C and dual-functional waveform designs, are proposed to optimize the sensing QoS under the constraints of the rate-distortion and power budget. The first scheme reveals a power allocation trade-off, while the latter presents a water-filling trade-off. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, where the dual-functional scheme exhibits approximately 25% performance gain compared to its separated waveform design counterpart.

New Delay Doppler Communication Paradigm in 6G era: A Survey of Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS)

In the 6G era, space-air-Ground integrated networks (SAGIN) are anticipated to deliver global coverage, necessitating support for a diverse array of emerging applications in high-mobility, hostile environments. Under such conditions, conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, widely employed in cellular and Wi-Fi communication systems, experiences performance degradation due to significant Doppler shifts. To overcome this obstacle, a novel two-dimensional (2D) modulation approach, namely orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), has emerged as a key enabler for future high-mobility use cases. Distinctively, OTFS modulates information within the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, as opposed to the time-frequency (TF) domain utilized by OFDM. This offers advantages such as Doppler and delay resilience, reduced signaling latency, a lower peak-to-average ratio (PAPR), and a reduced-complexity implementation. Recent studies further indicate that the direct interplay between information and the physical world in the DD domain positions OTFS as a promising waveform for achieving integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). In this article, we present an in-depth review of OTFS technology in the context of the 6G era, encompassing fundamentals, recent advancements, and future directions. Our objective is to provide a valuable resource for researchers engaged in the field of OTFS.

When UAVs Meet ISAC: Real-Time Trajectory Design for Secure Communications

The real-time unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) trajectory design of secure integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is optimized. In particular, the UAV serves both as a downlink transmitter and a radar receiver. The legitimate user (Bob) roams on ground through a series of unknown locations, while the eavesdropper moves following a fixed known trajectory. To maximize the real-time secrecy rate, we propose an extended Kalman filtering (EKF)-based method for tracking and predicting Bob's location at the UAV based on the delay measurements extracted from the sensing echoes. We then formulate a non-convex real-time trajectory design problem and develop an efficient iterative algorithm for finding a near optimal solution. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is capable of accurately tracking Bob and strikes a compelling legitimate vs. leakage rate trade-off.
