Coherence Protection of Electron Spin in Earth-field Range by All-optical Dynamic Decoupling

In recent years, unshielded atomic systems have been attracting researchers' attention, in which decoherence is one of the major problems, especially for high precision measurements. The nonlinear Zeeman effect and magnetic field gradient are the main decoherence sources of atomic electron spin in Earth-field range. Here, we propose a method to cancel out the two dominant broadening effects simultaneously by an all-optical dynamic decoupling approach based on Raman scattering in the 87Rb Zeeman sublevels. By adjusting the parameters of the Raman lasers, we realize spin control along an arbitrary direction. We analyze the state evolution of atomic spin under the Raman light control sequence in detail. The results show that both the nonlinear Zeeman effect and magnetic field gradient can be significantly suppressed.

An Environmentally-Adaptive Hawkes Process with An Application to COVID-19

We proposed a new generalized model based on the classical Hawkes process with environmental multipliers, which is called an environmentally-adaptive Hawkes (EAH) model. Compared to the classical self-exciting Hawkes process, the EAH model exhibits more flexibility in a macro environmentally temporal sense, and can model more complex processes by using dynamic branching matrix. We demonstrate the well-definedness of this EAH model. A more specified version of this new model is applied to model COVID-19 pandemic data through an efficient EM-like algorithm. Consequently, the proposed model consistently outperforms the classical Hawkes process.

Stückelberg interferometry using spin-orbit-coupled cold atoms in an optical lattice

Time evolution of spin-orbit-coupled cold atoms in an optical lattice is studied, with a two-band energy spectrum having two avoided crossings. A force is applied such that the atoms experience two consecutive Landau-Zener tunnelings while transversing the avoided crossings. Stückelberg interference arises from the phase accumulated during the adiabatic evolution between the two tunnelings. This phase is gauge field-dependent and thus provides new opportunities to measure the synthetic gauge field, which is verified via calculation of spin transition probabilities after a double passage process. Time-dependent and time-averaged spin probabilities are derived, in which resonances are found. We also demonstrate chiral Bloch oscillation and rich spin-momentum locking behavior in this system.

Nonlinear phase estimation enhanced by an actively correlated Mach-Zehnder interferometer

A nonlinear phase shift is introduced to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), and we present a scheme for enhancing the phase sensitivity. In our scheme, one input port of a standard MZI is injected with a coherent state and the other input port is injected with one mode of a two-mode squeezed-vacuum state. The final interference output of the MZI is detected with the method of active correlation output readout. Based on the optimal splitting ratio of beam splitters, the phase sensitivity can beat the standard quantum limit and approach the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. The effects of photon loss on phase sensitivity are discussed. Our scheme can also provide some estimates for units of $χ^{(3)}$, due to the relation between the nonlinear phase shift and the susceptibility $χ^{(3)}$ of the Kerr medium.

Atom-light hybrid quantum gyroscope

A new type of atom-light hybrid quantum gyroscope (ALHQG) is proposed due to its high rotation sensitivity. It consists of an optical Sagnac loop to couple rotation rate and an atomic ensemble as quantum beam splitter/recombiner (QBS/C) based on atomic Raman amplification process to realize the splitting and recombination of the optical wave and the atomic spin wave. The rotation sensitivity can be enhanced by the quantum correlation between Sagnac loop and QBS/C. The optimal working condition is investigated to achieve the best sensitivity. The numerical results show that the rotation sensitivity can beat the standard quantum limit (SQL) in ideal condition. Even in the presence of the attenuation under practical condition, the best sensitivity of the ALHQG can still beat the SQL and is better than that of a fiber optic gyroscope (FOG). Such an ALHQG could be practically applied for modern inertial navigation system.

Angular displacements estimation enhanced by squeezing and parametric amplification

We theoretically study the angular displacements estimation based on a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), in which two optical parametric amplifiers (PAs) are introduced into two arms of the standard MZI, respectively. The employment of PAs can both squeeze the shot noise and amplify the photon number inside the interferometer. When the unknown angular displacements are introduced to both arms, we derive the multiparameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB) using the quantum Fisher information matrix approach, and the bound of angular displacements difference between the two arms is compared with the sensitivity of angular displacement using the intensity detection. On the other hand, in the case where the unknown angular displacement is in only one arm, we give the sensitivity of angular displacement using the method of homodyne detection. It can surpass the standard quantum limit (SQL) and approach the single parameter QCRB. Finally, the effect of photon losses on sensitivity is discussed.

Spheroidal-structure-based multi-qubit Toffoli gate via asymmetric Rydberg interaction

We propose an exotic multi-qubit Toffoli gate protocol via asymmetric Rydberg blockade, benefiting from the use of a spheroidal configuration to optimize the gate performance. The merit of a spheroidal structure lies in a well preservation of strong blocked energies between all control-target atom pairs within the sphere, which can persistently keep the blockade error at a low level. On the basis of optimization for three different types of $(2+1)$-$qubit$ gate units to minimize the antiblockade error, the gate fidelity of an optimal $(6+1)$-$qubit$ configuration can attain as high as $0.9841$ mainly contributed by the decay error. And the extension with much more control atoms is also discussed. Our findings may shed light on scalable neutral-atom quantum computation in special high-dimensional arrays.

Quantum dense metrology by an SU(2)-in-SU(1,1) nested interferometer

With the help of quantum entanglement, quantum dense metrology (QDM) is a technique that can perform the joint estimates of two conjugate quantities such as phase and amplitude modulations of an optical field with an accuracy beating the standard quantum limit simultaneously. SU(1,1) interferometers (SUI) can realize QDM with detection loss tolerance but is limited in absolute sensitivity. Here we present a QDM scheme with a linear interferometer (SU(2)) nested inside an SU(1,1) interferometer. By using a degenerate SUI and controlling the phase angle of the phase-sensitive amplifers in SUI, we can achieve the optimum quantum enhancement in the measurement precision of arbitrary mixture of phase and amplitude modulation.

Nonnegative Scalar Curvature and Area Decreasing Maps

Let $\big(M,g^{TM}\big)$ be a noncompact complete spin Riemannian manifold of even dimension $n$, with $k^{TM}$ denote the associated scalar curvature. Let $f\colon M\rightarrow S^{n}(1)$ be a smooth area decreasing map, which is locally constant near infinity and of nonzero degree. We show that if $k^{TM}\geq n(n-1)$ on the support of ${\rm d}f$, then $ \inf \big(k^{TM}\big)< 0$. This answers a question of Gromov. We use a simple deformation of the Dirac operator to prove the result. The odd dimensional analogue is also presented.

Scalability and high-efficiency of an $(n+1)$-qubit Toffoli gate sphere via blockaded Rydberg atoms

The Toffoli gate serving as a basic building block for reversible quantum computation, has manifested its great potentials in improving the error-tolerant rate in quantum communication. While current route to the creation of Toffoli gate requires implementing sequential single- and two-qubit gates, limited by longer operation time and lower average fidelity. We develop a new theoretical protocol to construct a universal $(n+1)$-qubit Toffoli gate sphere based on the Rydberg blockade mechanism, by constraining the behavior of one central target atom with $n$ surrounding control atoms. Its merit lies in the use of only five $π$ pulses independent of the control atom number $n$ which leads to the overall gate time as fast as $\sim$125$n$s and the average fidelity closing to 0.999. The maximal filling number of control atoms can be up to $n=46$, determined by the spherical diameter which is equal to the blockade radius, as well as by the nearest neighbor spacing between two trapped-atom lattices. Taking $n=2,3,4$ as examples we comparably show the gate performance with experimentally accessible parameters, and confirm that the gate errors mainly attribute to the imperfect blockade strength, the spontaneous atomic loss and the imperfect ground-state preparation. In contrast to an one-dimensional-array configuration it is remarkable that the spherical atomic sample preserves a high-fidelity output against the increasing of $n$, shedding light on the study of scalable quantum simulation and entanglement with multiple neutral atoms.

Nonlinear Floquet dynamics of spinor condensates in an optical cavity: Cavity-amplified parametric resonance

We investigate Floquet dynamics of a cavity-spinor Bose-Einstein condensate coupling system via periodic modulation of the cavity pump laser. Parametric resonances are predicted and we show that due to cavity feedback-induced nonlinearity the spin oscillation can be amplified to all orders of resonance, thus facilitating its detection. Real-time observation on Floquet dynamics via cavity output is also discussed.

A novel two-mode squeezed light based on double-pump phase-matching

A novel two-mode non-degenerate squeezed light is generated based on a four-wave mixing (4WM) process driven by two pump fields crossing at a small angle. By exchanging the roles of the pump beams and the probe and conjugate beams, we have demonstrated the frequency-degenerate two-mode squeezed light with separated spatial patterns. Different from a 4WM process driven by one pump field, the refractive index of the corresponding probe field $n_{p}$ can be converted to a value that is greater than $1$ or less than $1$ by an angle adjustment. In the new region with $n_{p}<1$, the bandwidth of the gain is relatively large due to the slow change in the refractive index with the two-photon detuning. As the bandwidth is important for the practical application of a quantum memory, the wide-bandwidth intensity-squeezed light fields provide new prospects for quantum memories.

Bloch oscillations of spin-orbit-coupled cold atoms in an optical lattice and spin current generation

We study the Bloch oscillation dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled cold atomic gas trapped inside a one-dimensioanl optical lattice. The eigenspectra of the system is identified as two interpenetrating Wannier-Stark ladder. Based on that, we carefully analyzed the Bloch oscillation dynamics and found out that intraladder coupling between neighboring rungs of Wannier-Stark ladder give rise to ordinary Bloch oscillation while interladder coupling lead to small amplitude high frequency oscillation superimposed on it. Specifically spin-orbit interaction breaks Galilean invariance, which can be reflected by out-of-phase oscillation of the two spin components in the accelerated frame. The possibility of generating spin current in this system are also explored.

THORS: An Efficient Approach for Making Classifiers Cost-sensitive

In this paper, we propose an effective THresholding method based on ORder Statistic, called THORS, to convert an arbitrary scoring-type classifier, which can induce a continuous cumulative distribution function of the score, into a cost-sensitive one. The procedure, uses order statistic to find an optimal threshold for classification, requiring almost no knowledge of classifiers itself. Unlike common data-driven methods, we analytically show that THORS has theoretical guaranteed performance, theoretical bounds for the costs and lower time complexity. Coupled with empirical results on several real-world data sets, we argue that THORS is the preferred cost-sensitive technique.

Non-Hermitian magnon-photon interference in an atomic ensemble

The beam-splitter (BS) is one of the most common and important components in modern optics, and lossless BS which features unitary transformation induces Hermitian evolution of light. However, the practical BS based on the conversion between different degree of freedoms are naturally non-Hermitian, as a result of essentially open quantum dynamics. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a non-Hermitian BS for the interference between traveling photonic and localized magnonic modes. The non-Hermitian magnon-photon BS is achieved by the coherent and incoherent interaction mediated by the excited levels of atoms, which is reconfigurable by adjusting the detuning of excitation. Unconventional correlated interference pattern is observed at the photon and magnon output ports. Our work is potential for extending to single-quantum level to realize interference between a single photon and magnon, which provides an efficient and simple platform for future tests of non-Hermitian quantum physics.

All-Optical Spin Locking in Alkali-Vapor Magnetometers

The nonlinear Zeeman effect can induce splittings and asymmetries of magnetic-resonance lines in the geophysical magnetic-field range. We demonstrate a scheme to suppress the nonlinear Zeeman effect all optically based on spin locking. Spin locking is achieved with an effective oscillating magnetic field provided by the AC Stark-shift of an intensity-modulated and polarization-modulated laser beam. This results in the collapse of the multi-component asymmetric magnetic-resonance line with about 100 Hz width in the Earth-field range into a peak with a central component width of 25Hz. The technique is expected to be broadly applicable in practical magnetometry, potentially boosting the sensitivity and accuracy of Earth-surveying magnetometers by increasing the magnetic-resonance amplitude and decreasing its width. Advantage of an all-optical approach is the absence of cross-talk between nearby sensors when these are used in a gradiometric or in an array arrangement.

Relativistic Measurement Backaction in the Quantum Dirac Oscillator

An elegant method to circumvent quantum measurement backaction is the use of quantum mechanics free subsystems (QMFS), with one approach involving the use of two oscillators with effective masses of opposite signs. Since negative energies, and hence masses, are a characteristic of relativistic systems a natural question is to what extent QMFS can be realized in this context. Using the example of a one-dimensional Dirac oscillator we investigate conditions under which this can be achieved, and identify Zitterbewegung or virtual pair creation as the physical mechanism that fundamentally limits the feasibility of the scheme. We propose a tabletop implementation of a Dirac oscillator system based on a spin-orbit coupled ultracold atomic sample that allows for a direct observation of the corresponding analog of virtual pair creation on quantum measurement backaction.

Quantitative and functional post-translational modification proteomics reveals that TREPH1 plays a role in plant thigmomorphogenesis

Plants can sense both intracellular and extracellular mechanical forces and can respond through morphological changes. The signaling components responsible for mechanotransduction of the touch response are largely unknown. Here, we performed a high-throughput SILIA (stable isotope labeling in Arabidopsis)-based quantitative phosphoproteomics analysis to profile changes in protein phosphorylation resulting from 40 seconds of force stimulation in Arabidopsis thaliana. Of the 24 touch-responsive phosphopeptides identified, many were derived from kinases, phosphatases, cytoskeleton proteins, membrane proteins and ion transporters. TOUCH-REGULATED PHOSPHOPROTEIN1 (TREPH1) and MAP KINASE KINASE 2 (MKK2) and/or MKK1 became rapidly phosphorylated in touch-stimulated plants. Both TREPH1 and MKK2 are required for touch-induced delayed flowering, a major component of thigmomorphogenesis. The treph1-1 and mkk2 mutants also exhibited defects in touch-inducible gene expression. A non-phosphorylatable site-specific isoform of TREPH1 (S625A) failed to restore touch-induced flowering delay of treph1-1, indicating the necessity of S625 for TREPH1 function and providing evidence consistent with the possible functional relevance of the touch-regulated TREPH1 phosphorylation. Bioinformatic analysis and biochemical subcellular fractionation of TREPH1 protein indicate that it is a soluble protein. Altogether, these findings identify new protein players in Arabidopsis thigmomorphogenesis regulation, suggesting that protein phosphorylation may play a critical role in plant force responses.
