Tomography of the temporal-spectral state of subnatural-linewidth single photons from atomic ensembles

Subnatural-linewidth single-photon source is a potential candidate for exploring the time degree of freedom in photonic quantum information science. This type of single-photon source has been demonstrated to be generated and reshaped in atomic ensembles without any external cavity or filter, and is typically characterized through photon-counting technology. However, the full complex temporal mode function(TMF) of the photon source is not able to be revealed from direct photon counting measurement. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate the complete temporal mode of the subnatural-linewidth single photons generated from a cold atomic cloud. Through heterodyne detection between the single photon and a local oscillator with various central frequencies, we recover the temporal density matrix of the single photons at resolvable time bins. Further we demonstrate that the reduced autocorrelation function measured through homodyne detection perfectly reveals the pure temporal-spectral state of the subnatural-linewidth single photons.

Phase estimation of phase shifts in two arms for an SU(1,1) interferometer with coherent and squeezed vacuum states

We theoretically present the quantum Cramér-Rao bounds (QCRB) of an SU(1,1) interferometer for Gaussian states input with and without the internal photonic losses. The phase shifts in the single arm and in the double arms are studied and the corresponding analytical expressions of quantum Fisher information with Gaussian input states are presented. Different from the traditional Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the QCRB of single arm case is slightly higher or lower than that of double arms case depending on the input states. With a fixed mean photon number and for pure Gaussian state input, the optimal sensitivity is achieved with a squeezed vacuum input in one mode and the vacuum input in the other. We compare the QCRB with the standard quantum limit and Heisenberg limit. In the case of small internal losses the QCRB can beat the standard quantum limit.

Phase estimation for an SU(1,1) interferometer in the presence of phase diffusion and photon losses

We theoretically study the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of the SU(1,1) interferometer with phase shifts in two arms taking account of realistic noise effects. A generalized phase transform including the phase diffusion effect is presented by the purification process. Based on this transform, the analytical QFI and the bound to the quantum precision are derived when considering the effects of phase diffusion and photon losses simultaneously. To beat the standard quantum limit with the reduced precision of phase estimation due to noisy, the upper bounds of decoherence coefficients as a function of total mean photon number are given.

Effects of loss on the phase sensitivity with parity detection in an SU(1,1) interferometer

We theoretically study the effects of loss on the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with parity detection with various input states. We show that although the sensitivity of phase estimation decreases in the presence of loss, it can still beat the shot-noise limit with small loss. To examine the performance of parity detection, the comparison is performed among homodyne detection, intensity detection, and parity detection. Compared with homodyne detection and intensity detection, parity detection has a slight better optimal phase sensitivity in the absence of loss, but has a worse optimal phase sensitivity with a significant amount of loss with one-coherent state or coherent $\otimes$ squeezed state input.

High-performance Raman quantum memory with optimal control

Quantum memories with high efficiency and fidelity are essential for long-distance quantum communication and information processing. Techniques have been developed for quantum memories based on atomic ensembles. The atomic memories relying on the atom-light resonant interaction usually suffer from the limitations of narrow bandwidth. The far-off-resonant Raman process has been considered a potential candidate for use in atomic memories with large bandwidths and high speeds. However, to date, the low memory efficiency remains an unsolved bottleneck. Here, we demonstrate a high-performance atomic Raman memory in Rb87 vapour with the development of an optimal control technique. A memory efficiency of 82.6% for 10-ns optical pulses is achieved and is the highest realized to date in atomic Raman memories. In particular, an unconditional fidelity of up to 98.0%, significantly exceeding the no-cloning limit, is obtained with the tomography reconstruction for a single-photon level coherent input. Our work marks an important advance of atomic Raman memory towards practical applications in quantum information processing.

Squeezed cooling of mechanical motion beyond the resolved-sideband limit

Cavity optomechanics provides a unique platform for controlling micromechanical systems by means of optical fields that crosses the classical-quantum boundary to achieve solid foundations for quantum technologies. Currently, optomechanical resonators have become promising candidates for the development of precisely controlled nano-motors, ultrasensitive sensors and robust quantum information processors. For all these applications, a crucial requirement is to cool the mechanical resonators down to their quantum ground states. In this paper, we present a novel cooling scheme to further cool a micromechanical resonator via the noise squeezing effect. One quadrature in such a resonator can be squeezed to induce enhanced fluctuation in the other, "heated" quadrature, which can then be used to cool the mechanical motion via conventional optomechanical coupling. Our theoretical analysis and numerical calculations demonstrate that this squeeze-and-cool mechanism offers a quick technique for deeply cooling a macroscopic mechanical resonator to an unprecedented temperature region below the zero-point fluctuations.

Absolute sensitivity of phase measurement in an SU(1,1) type interferometer

Absolute sensitivity is measured for the phase measurement in an SU(1,1) type interferometer and the results are compared to that of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer operated under the condition of the same intra-interferometer intensity. The interferometer is phase locked to a point with the largest quantum noise cancellation, and a simulated phase modulation is added in one arm of SU(1,1) interferometer. Both the signal and noise level are estimated at the same frequency range, and we obtain 3dB improvement in sensitivity for the SU(1,1) interferometer over the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Our results demonstrate a direct phase estimation, and may pave the way for practical applications of nonlinear interferometer.

Characterizing micro-macro transitions with an atomic-vapor-based linear optical amplifier

Fundamentally, the dynamics of micro-macro transitions is instrumental to understanding the process of quantum-to-classical transitions; technologically, it can also facilitate the detection of the microscopic signals in quantum experiments via convenient detectors. Here, we demonstrate a scheme to characterize micro-macro transitions based on a four-wave mixing linear optical amplification process in a hot rubidium vapor. The linear optical amplifier provides a large optical gain of $10^7$ for injected single-photon-level pulses, enabling photon-number-resolving detection by average via non-single-photon counting detectors with a large dynamic range. The scheme exhibits strong dispersion which is sensitive to the input's change at the single-photon level, resulting in the group-velocity delay time scaling with $1/\sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is the average input photon number. The output probe and conjugate modes have different coefficients of this $1/\sqrt{N}$ scaling, indicating the coefficient can serve as an efficient parameter to characterize the specified micro-macro transitions. The demonstrated results are generally applicable for quantum detection and optical signal processing in light-atom interfaces. Furthermore, the present system is suitable for the study of relevant time-resolved dynamics of the quantum-to-classical transitions.

Flat vector bundles and open coverings

We establish a generic counting formula for the Euler number of a flat vector bundle of rank $2n$ over a $2n$ dimensional closed manifold, in terms of vertices of transversal open coverings of the underlying manifold. We use the Mathai-Quillen formalism to prove our result.

Quantum optomechanical straight-twin engine

We propose a realization of a quantum heat engine in a hybrid microwave-optomechanical system that is the analog of a classical straight-twin engine. It exploits a pair of polariton modes that operate as out-of-phase quantum Otto cycles. A third polariton mode that is essential in the coupling of the optical and microwave fields is maintained in a quasi-dark mode to suppress disturbances from the mechanical noise. We also find that the fluctuations in the contributions to the total work from the two polariton modes are characterized by quantum correlations that generally lead to a reduction in the extractable work compared to its classical version.

Positive scalar curvature and connected sums

Let $N$ be a closed enlargeable manifold in the sense of Gromov-Lawson and $M$ a closed spin manifold of equal dimension, a famous theorem of Gromov-Lawson states that the connected sum $M\# N$ admits no metric of positive scalar curvature. We present a potential generalization of this result to the case where $M$ is nonspin. We use index theory for Dirac operators to prove our result.

Photon-phonon parametric oscillation induced by the quadratic coupling in an optomechanical resonator

A direct photon-phonon parametric effect of the quadratic coupling on the mean-field dynamics of an optomechanical resonator in the large-scale-movement regime is found and investigated. Under a weak pumping power, the mechanical resonator damps to steady state with a nonlinear static response sensitively modified by the quadratic coupling. When the driving powerincreases beyond the static energy balance, the steady states lose their stabilities via Hopf bifurcations and the resonator produces stable self-sustained oscillation(limit-circle behavior) of discrete energies with step-like amplitudes due to the parametric effect of the quadratic coupling, which can be understood roughly by the power balance between gain and loss on the resonator. A further increase of the pumping power can induce chaotic dynamic of the resonator via a typical routine of period-doubling bifurcation but which can be stabilized by the parametric effect through an inversion bifurcation process back to limit-circle states. The bifurcation-to-inverse-bifurcation transitions are numerically verified by the maximal Lyapunov exponents of the dynamics and which indicate an efficient way to suppress the chaotic behavior of the optomechanical resonator by the quadratic coupling. Furthermore, the parametric effect of the quadratic coupling on the dynamic transitions of an optomechanical resonator can be conveniently detected or traced by the output power spectrum of the cavity field.

The classical and quantum synchronization between two scattering modes in Bose-Einstein condensates generated by the standing-wave laser beams

Both classical and quantum dynamics of the synchronization between two nonlinear mechanical modes scattered from Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by the standing-wave laser beam are comparatively investigated. As the ultra-low dissipations of the momentum modes in the atomic BECs, the synchronized dynamics are studied in a framework of closed-system theory in order to track down both the classical and the quantum synchronizations from an angle of quantum control. The classical synchronization and the relevant dynamics of measure synchronization, the quantum synchronization and two different types of measures proposed by Mari and estimated by mutual information based on $Q$-function are studied respectively in order to reveal both the macroscopic and the microscopic signatures of synchronized behaviors in a closed quantum system. The results demonstrate that the "revival and collapse" of the quantum fluctuations beyond the classical mean-value dynamics due to long-lasting mode coherence discriminates the quantum synchronization from the classical one, which not only excludes the possibilities of an exact synchronization and a perfect density overlap in phase space, but also leads to upper limitations to Mari measure and large unceasing fluctuations to mutual information between two scattering modes. We reveal a close dynamic connection between Mari measure and the mutual information of two nonlinear momentum modes in closed BEC systems by demonstrating an opposite mean-value behavior but a similar fluctuation variation with respect to their respective evolutionary scales.

Positive scalar curvature and the Euler class

We prove the following generalization of the classical Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem: if $F$ is an oriented flat vector bundle over a closed spin manifold $M$ such that $TM$ carries a metric of positive scalar curvature, then $<\widehat A(TM)e(F),[M]>=0$, where $e(F)$ is the Euler class of $F$.

Deterministic entanglement generation between a pair of atoms on different Rydberg states via chirped adiabatic passage

We develop a scheme for deterministic generation of an entangled state between two atoms on different Rydberg states via a chirped adiabatic passage, which directly connects the initial ground and target entangled states and also does not request the normally needed blockade effect. The occupancy of intermediate states suffers from a strong reduction via two pulses with proper time-dependent detunings and the electromagnetically induced transparency condition. By solving the analytical expressions of eigenvalues and eigenstates of a two-atom system, we investigate the optimal parameters for guaranteeing the adiabatic condition. We present a detailed study for the effect of pulse duration, changing rate, different Rydberg interactions on the fidelity of the prepared entangled state with experimentally feasible parameters, which reveals a good agreement between the analytic and full numerical results.

One qubit and one photon -- the simplest polaritonic heat engine

Hybrid quantum systems can often be described in terms of polaritons. These are quasiparticles formed of superpositions of their constituents, with relative weights depending on some control parameter in their interaction. In many cases, these constituents are coupled to reservoirs at different temperatures. This suggests a general approach to the realization of polaritonic heat engines where a thermodynamic cycle is realized by tuning this control parameter. Here we discuss what is arguably the simplest such engine, a single qubit coupled to a single photon. We show that this system can extract work from feeble thermal microwave fields. We also propose a quantum measurement scheme of the work and evaluate its back-action on the operation of the engine.

Positive scalar curvature on foliations

We generalize classical theorems due to Lichnerowicz and Hitchin on the existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on spin manifolds to the case of foliated spin manifolds. As a consequence, we show that there is no foliation of positive leafwise scalar curvature on any torus, which generalizes the famous theorem of Schoen-Yau and Gromov-Lawson on the non-existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature on torus to the case of foliations. Moreover, our method, which is partly inspired by the analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau, also applies to give a new proof of the celebrated Connes vanishing theorem without using noncommutative geometry.
