Chirped Multi-photon adiabatic passage for a four-level ladder-type Rydberg excitation

We develop a multi-photon adiabatic passage to realize a highly efficient Rydberg excitation in a four-level ladder-type atomic system. The adiabatic passage is based on the existence of a novel quasi-dark state in the cascade excitation system where the frequencies of the lasers are appropriately chirped with time. We also investigate the influence of the interatomic Rydberg interaction on the passage and extend its application to the preparation of anti-blockade Rydberg atom pairs in the Rydberg blockade regime.

Dissipation-sensitive multi-photon excitations of strongly interacting Rydberg atoms

We theoretically investigate the effect of dissipation on multi-photon excitation of Rydberg atoms. The steady states and the dynamics are compared via two types of four-level excitation schemes with different dissipative paths of spontaneous emission. We find that in the case of strong Rydberg-Rydberg interaction, the schemes will settle in several different non-equilibrium steady states. The interesting aspect is that there exists the multi-stable steady states, which reveals the competition between interaction-induced nonlinearity and dissipation caused by spontaneous emission. A numerical simulation on the Rydberg population dynamics in the bistable region exhibits different features existing in the two schemes even with the same initial conditions, which accounts for the influence of the dissipation on the dynamics.

Experimental generation of multiple quantum correlated beams from hot rubidium vapor

Quantum correlations and entanglement shared among multiple quantum modes are important for both fundamental science and the future development of quantum technologies. This development will also require an efficient quantum interface between multimode quantum light sources and atomic ensembles, which makes it necessary to implement multimode quantum light sources that match the atomic transitions. Here we report on such a source that provides a method for generating quantum correlated beams that can be extended to a large number of modes by using multiple four-wave mixing (FWM) processes in hot rubidium vapor. Experimentally we show that two cascaded FWM processes produce strong quantum correlations between three bright beams but not between any two of them. In addition, the intensity-difference squeezing is enhanced with the cascaded system to -7.0 $\pm$ 0.1 dB from the -5.5 $\pm$ 0.1/-4.5 $\pm$ 0.1 dB squeezing obtained with only one FWM process. One of the main advantages of our system is that as the number of quantum modes increases, so does the total degree of quantum correlations. The proposed method is also immune to phase instabilities due to its phase insensitive nature, can easily be extended to multiple modes, and has potential applications in the production of multiple quantum correlated images.

$η$-invariant and Modular Forms

We show that the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer reduced $η$-invariant of the twisted Dirac operator on a closed $4m-1$ dimensional spin manifold, with the twisted bundle being the Witten bundle appearing in the theory of elliptic genus, is a meromorphic modular form of weight $2m$ up to an integral $q$-series. We prove this result by combining our construction of certain modular characteristic forms associated to a generalized Witten bundle on spin$^c$-manifolds with a deep topological theorem due to Hopkins.

$η$-invariant and a problem of Bérard-Bergery on the existence of closed geodesics

We use the $η$-invariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer to compute the Eells-Kuiper invariant for the Eells-Kuiper quaternionic projective plane. By combining with a known result of Bérard-Bergery, it shows that every Eells-Kuiper quaternionic projective plane carries a Riemannian metric such that all geodesics passing through a certain point are simply closed and of the same length.

Back-action-free quantum optomechanics with negative-mass Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose that the dispersion management of coherent atomic matter waves can be exploited to overcome quantum back-action in condensate-based optomechanical sensors. The effective mass of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate modulated by an optical lattice can become negative, resulting in a negative-frequency optomechanical oscillator, a negative environment temperature, and optomechanical properties opposite to those of a positive-mass system. This enables a quantum-mechanics-free subsystem insulated from quantum back-action.

Anisotropic deformation of Rydberg blockade sphere in few-atom systems

Rydberg blockade sphere persists an intriguing picture by which a number of collective many-body effects caused by the strong Rydberg-Rydberg interactions can be clearly understood and profoundly investigated. In the present work, we develop a new definition for the effective two-atom blockade radius and show that the original spherically shaped blockade surface would be deformed when the real number of atoms increases from two to three. This deformation of blockade sphere reveals spatially anisotropic and shrunken properties which strongly depend on the interatomic distance. In addition, we also study the optimal conditions for the Rydberg antiblockade effect and make predictions for improving the antiblockade efficiency in few-atom systems.

Quantum phases of strongly interacting Rydberg atoms in triangular lattices

We present a theoretical study on the system of laser-driven strongly interacting Rydberg atoms trapped in a two-dimensional triangular lattice, in which the dipole-dipole interactions between Rydberg states result in exotic quantum phases. By using the mean-field theory, we investigate the steady state solutions and analyze their dynamical stabilities. We find that in the strong-interaction limit, the dynamics of the system is chaotic and exhibits random oscillations under appropriate laser detunings. Lyapunov exponent criterion is introduced to confirm the existence of this chaotic behavior. In addition, we present a full quantum calculation based on a six-atom model, and find that the system exhibits some bi-antiferromagnetic properties in every triangular cell when the one-photon detuning is exactly resonant or blue-shifted.

Photon-atomic solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a soft optical lattice

We investigate the ground state (GS) of a collisionless Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a soft one-dimensional optical lattice (OL), which is formed by two counterpropagating optical beams perturbed by the BEC density profile through the local-field effect (LFE). We show that LFE gives rise to an envelope-deformation potential, a nonlocal potential resulting from the phase deformation, and an effective self-interaction of the condensate. As a result, stable photon-atomic lattice solitons, including an optical component, in the form of the deformation of the soft OL, in a combination with a localized matter-wave component, are generated in the blue-detuned setting, without any direct interaction between atoms. These self-trapped modes, which realize the system's GS, are essentially different from the gap solitons supported by the interplay of the OL potential and collisional interactions between atoms. A transition to tightly bound modes from loosely bound ones occurs with the increase of the number of atoms in the BEC.

The phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with homodyne detection

We theoretically study the phase sensitivity of the SU(1,1) interferometer with a coherent light together with a squeezed vacuum input case using the method of homodyne. We find that the homodyne detection has better sensitivity than the intensity detection under this input case. For a certain intensity of coherent light (squeezed light) input, the relative phase sensitivity is not always better with increasing the squeezed strength (coherent light strength). The phase sensitivity can reach the Heisenberg limit only under a certain moderate parameter interval, which can be realized with current experiment ability.

Correlation enhanced phase sensitive Raman scattering in atomic vapors

We theoretically propose a method to enhance Raman scattering by injecting a seeded light field which is correlated with the initially prepared atomic spin wave. Such a light-atom correlation leads to an interference in the Raman scattering. The interference is sensitive to the relative phase between the seeded light field and initially prepared atomic spin wave. For constructive interference, the Raman scattering is greatly enhanced. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may find applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and optical metrology due to its simplicity.

Anderson Localization of cold atomic gases with effective spin-orbit interaction in a quasiperiodic optical lattice

We theoretically investigate the localization properties of a spin-orbit coupled spin-1/2 particle moving in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic potential, which can be experimentally implemented using cold atoms trapped in a quasiperiodic optical lattice potential and external laser fields. We present the phase diagram in the parameter space of the disorder strength and those related to the spin-orbit coupling. The phase diagram is verified via multifractal analysis of the atomic wavefunctions and the numerical simulation of diffusion dynamics. We found that spin-orbit coupling can lead to the spectra mixing (coexistence of extended and localized states) and the appearance of mobility edges.

Optical Bragg, atom Bragg and cavity QED detections of quantum phases and excitation spectra of ultracold atoms in bipartite and frustrated optical lattices

Ultracold atoms loaded on optical lattices can provide unprecedented experimental systems for the quantum simulations and manipulations of many quantum phases and quantum phase transitions between these phases. However, so far, how to detect these quantum phases and phase transitions effectively remains an outstanding challenge. In this paper, we will develop a systematic and unified theory of using the optical Bragg scattering, atomic Bragg scattering or cavity QED to detect the ground state and the excitation spectrum of many quantum phases of interacting bosons loaded in bipartite and frustrated optical lattices. We show that the two photon Raman transition processes in the three detection methods not only couple to the density order parameter, but also the {\sl valence bond order} parameter due to the hopping of the bosons on the lattice. This valence bond order coupling is very sensitive to any superfluid order or any Valence bond (VB) order in the quantum phases to be probed. These quantum phases include not only the well known superfluid and Mott insulating phases, but also other important phases such as various kinds of charge density waves (CDW), valence bond solids (VBS), CDW-VBS phases with both CDW and VBS orders unique to frustrated lattices, and also various kinds of supersolids. The physical measurable quantities of the three experiments are the light scattering cross sections, the atom scattered clouds and the cavity leaking photons respectively. We analyze respectively the experimental conditions of the three detection methods to probe these various quantum phases and their corresponding excitation spectra. We also address the effects of a finite temperature and a harmonic trap.

Efficient Raman Frequency Conversion by Feedbacks of Pump and Stokes Fields

We experimentally demonstrate efficient Raman conversion to respective Stokes and anti-Stokes fields in both pulsed and continuous modes with a Rb-87 atomic vapor cell. The conversion efficiency is about 40-50% for the Stokes field and 20-30% for the anti-Stokes field, respectively. This conversion process is realized with feedback of both the Raman pump and the frequency-converted fields (Stokes or anti-Stokes). The experimental setup is very simple and can be applied easily to produce the light source with larger frequency difference using other Raman media. They may have wide applications in nonlinear optics, atomic physics, quantum optics and precise measurement.

Anomaly Cancellation and Modularity. II: $E_8\times E_8$ case

In this paper we show that both of the Green-Schwarz anomaly factorization formula for the gauge group $E_8\times E_8$ and the Hořava-Witten anomaly factorization formula for the gauge group $E_8$ can be derived through modular forms of weight 14. This answers a question of J. H. Schwarz. We also establish generalizations of these factorization formulas and obtain a new Hořava-Witten type factorization formula.

Phase Diagram of Rydberg atoms in a nonequilibrium optical lattice

We study the quantum nonequilibrium dynamics of ultracold three-level atoms trapped in an optical lattice, which are excited to their Rydberg states via a two-photon excitation with nonnegligible spontaneous emission. Rich quantum phases including uniform phase, antiferromagnetic phase and oscillatory phase are identified. We map out the phase diagram and find these phases can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of intensity of the pump light to the control light, and that of two-photon detuning to the Rydberg interaction strength. When the two-photon detuning is blue-shifted and the latter ratio is less than 1, bistability exists among the phases. Actually, this ratio controls the Rydberg-blockade and antiblockade effect, thus the phase transition in this system can be considered as a possible approach to study both effects.
