Role reversal in a Bose-condensed optomechanical system

We analyze the optomechanics-like properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside an optical resonator and driven by both a classical and a quantized light field. We find that this system exhibits a nature of role reversal between the matter-wave field and the quantized light field. As a result, the matter wave field now plays the role of the quantized light field, and the quantized light field behaves like a movable mirror, in contrast to the familiar situation in BEC-based cavity optomechanics [Brennecke et al., Science 322, 235 (2008); Murch et al., Nat. Phys. 4, 561 (2008)]. We demonstrate that this system can lead to the creation of a variety of nonclassical matter-wave fields, in particular cat states, and discuss several possible protocols to measure their Wigner function.

Cavity-meidated collisionless sympathetic cooling of molecules with atoms

Cooling a range of molecules to ultracold temperatures (<1 mK) is a difficult but important challenge in molecular physics and chemistry. Collective cavity cooling of molecules is a promising method that does not rely on molecular energy level and thus can be applied to all molecules in principle. However, the initial lack of cold molecules leads to the difficulty in its experimental implementation. We show that efficient collective sympathetic cooling of molecules to sub-mK temperatures using a large ensemble of atoms within a cavity is feasible. This approach is a new type of sympathetic cooling which does not rely on direct collisions between atoms and molecules, but utilizes thermalization via their mutual interaction with a cavity field. Two important mechanisms are identified. This include: (1) giant enhancement of cavity optical field from the efficient scattering of the pump light by the atoms; (2) cavity-mediated collective interaction between the atoms and the molecules. We show an optimal cavity detuning for maximizing cooling, which is dependent on the atom and molecule numbers. We determine a threshold for the molecular pump strength and show that it is independent of molecule number when the number of atoms is much greater than the molecules. This can be reduced by orders of magnitude when compared to cavity cooling of single molecular species only. Using this new sympathetic cavity cooling technique, cooling molecules to sub-mK within a high-Q cavity could be within reach of experimental demonstration.

Anomaly Cancellation and Modularity

It has been shown that the Alvarez-Gaum$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$-Witten miraculous anomaly cancellation formula in type IIB superstring theory and its various generalizations can be derived from modularity of certain characteristic forms. In this paper, we show that the Green-Schwarz formula and the Schwarz-Witten formula in type I superstring theory can also be derived from the modularity of those characteristic forms and thus unify the Alvarez-Gaum$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$-Witten formula, the Green-Schwarz formula as well as the Schwarz-Witten formula in the same framework. Various generalizations of these remarkable formulas are also established.

Eta invariant and holonomy, the even dimensional case

In previous work, we introduced eta invariants for even dimensional manifolds. It plays the same role as the eta invariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer, which is for odd dimensional manifolds. It is associated to $K^1$ representatives on even dimensional manifolds and is closely related to the so called WZW theory in physics. In fact, it is an intrinsic interpretation of the Wess-Zumino term without passing to the bounding 3-manifold. Spectrally the eta invariant is defined on a finite cylinder, rather than on the manifold itself. Thus it is an interesting question to find an intrinsic spectral interpretation of this new invariant. We address this issue here using adiabatic limit technique. The general formulation relates the (mod $\mathbb Z$ reduction of) eta invariant for even dimensional manifolds with the holonomy of the determinant line bundle of a natural family of Dirac type operators. In this sense our result might be thought of as an even dimensional analogue of Witten's holonomy theorem proved by Bismut-Freed and Cheeger independently.

Stability, Adiabaticity and Transfer efficiency in a nonlinear Λ-system

We investigate the relationship between stability, adiabaticity and transfer efficiency in a Λ-type atom-molecule coupling system via a nonlinear stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. We find that only when the pump and control lasers overlap in time domain, the coherent population trapping (CPT) state could become unstable. If the overlapping time of the two lasers is short so that unstable growth of the deviation from the CPT state is negligible, then good adiabaticity of the CPT state could be maintained even in the unstable region. In this case, a high atom-molecule transfer efficiency could be obtained by chirping applied laser pulses to elegantly compensate the frequency shift induced by intra-atomic collision. Our results could be useful for efficiently photoassociating ground-state molecules from a cold atomic gas with strong atom-atom collisional interaction.

Cavity-induced switching between localized and extended states in a non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

We study an ultracold atom-cavity coupling system, which had been implemented in experiment to display weak light nonlinearity [S. Gupta \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{99}, 213601 (2007)]. The model is described by a non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate contained in a Fabry-Pérot optical resonator, in which two incommensurate standing-wave modes are excited and thus form a quasiperiodic optical lattice potential for the atoms. Special emphasis are paid to the variation of atomic wavefunction induced by the cavity light field. We show that bistability between the atomic localized and extended states can be generated under appropriate conditions.

Modular Forms and Generalized Anomaly Cancellation Formulas

In this paper, we generalize the anomaly cancellation formulas in \cite{AW, Liu1, HZ2} to the cases that an auxiliary bundle $W$ as well as a complex line bundle $ξ$ are involved with no conditions on the first Pontryagin forms being assumed.

Storage and retrieval of continuous-variable polarization-entangled cluster states in atomic ensembles

We present a proposal for storing and retrieving a continuous-variable quadripartite polarization-entangled cluster state, using macroscopic atomic ensembles in a magnetic field. The Larmor precession of the atomic spins leads to a symmetry between the atomic canonical operators. In this scheme, each of the four spatially separated pulses passes twice through the respective ensemble in order to map the polarization-entangled cluster state onto the long-lived atomic ensembles. The stored state can then be retrieved by another four read-out pulses, each crossing the respective ensemble twice. By calculating the variances, we analyzed the fidelities of the storage and retrieval, and our scheme is feasible under realistic experimental conditions.

Retrieval of phase memory in two independent atomic ensembles by Raman process

In spontaneous Raman process in atomic cell at high gain, both the Stokes field and the accompanying collective atomic excitation (atomic spin wave) are coherent. We find that, due to the spontaneous nature of the process, the phases of the Stokes field and the atomic spin wave change randomly from one realization to another but are anti-correlated. The phases of the atomic ensembles are read out via another Raman process at a later time, thus realizing phase memory in atoms. The observation of phase correlation between the Stokes field and the collective atomic excitations is an important step towards macroscopic EPR-type entanglement of continuous variables between light and atoms.

Generation of frequency multiplexed entangled single photons assisted by the entanglement

We present a scheme to generate the frequency multiplexed entangled (FME) single photons based on the entanglement between two species atomic mixture ensemble. The write and reads fields driven according to a certain timing sequence, the generation of FME single photons can be repeated until success is achieved. The source might have significant applications in wavelength division multiplexing quantum key distribution.

Measurement back-action on the quantum spin-mixing dynamics of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider a small F=1 spinor condensate inside an optical cavity driven by an optical probe field, and subject the output of the probe to a homodyne detection, with the goal of investigating the effect of measurement back-action on the spin dynamics of the condensate. Using the stochastic master equation approach, we show that the effect of back-action is sensitive to not only the measurement strength but also the quantum fluctuation of the spinor condensate. The same method is also used to estimate the atom numbers below which the effect of back-action becomes so prominent that extracting spin dynamics from this cavity-based detection scheme is no longer practical.

Light scattering detection of quantum phases of ultracold atoms in optical lattices

Ultracold atoms loaded on optical lattices can provide unprecedented experimental systems for the quantum simulations and manipulations of many quantum phases. However, so far, how to detect these quantum phases effectively remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we show that the optical Bragg scattering of cold atoms loaded on optical lattices can be used to detect many quantum phases which include not only the conventional superfluid and Mott insulating phases, but also other important phases such as various kinds of density waves (CDW), valence bond solids (VBS), CDW supersolids and VBS supersolids.

Coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor

We present a scheme to obtain the coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor which is induced by a spin wave initially written by a weak write laser. The enhancement of Raman scattering is dependent on the number and the spatial distribution of the flipped atoms generated by the weak write laser. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy because of its simplicity.

Observation of Rabi oscillation of light assisted by atomic spin wave

Coherent conversion between a Raman pump field and its Stokes field is observed in a Raman process with a strong atomic spin wave initially prepared by another Raman process operated in the stimulated emission regime. The oscillatory behavior resembles the Rabi oscillation in atomic population in a two-level atomic system driven by a strong light field. The Rabi-like oscillation frequency is found to be related to the strength of the pre-built atomic spin wave. High conversion efficiency of 40% from the Raman pump field to the Stokes field is recorded and it is independent of the input Raman pump field. This process can act as a photon frequency multiplexer and may find wide applications in quantum information science.

A Poincaré-Hopf type formula for Chern character numbers

For two complex vector bundles admitting a homomorphism with isolated singularities between them, we establish a Poincaré-Hopf type formula for the difference of the Chern character numbers of these two vector bundles. As a consequence, we extend the original Poincaré-Hopf index formula to the case of complex vector fields (to appear in Mathematische Zeitschrift)

Quantum tunneling time of a Bose-Einstein condensate traversing through a laser-induced potential barrier

We theoretically study the effect of atomic nonlinearity on the tunneling time in the case of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) traversing the laser-induced potential barrier. The atomic nonlinearity is controlled to appear only in the region of the barrier by employing the Feshbach resonance technique to tune interatomic interaction in the tunneling process. Numerical simulation shows that the atomic nonlinear effect dramatically changes the tunneling behavior of the BEC matter wave packet, and results in the violation of Hartman effect and the occurrence of negative tunneling time.

Observation of single- and two-photon beating between independent Raman scattering

By using spontaneous Raman processes in the high gain regime, we produce two independent Raman Stokes fields from an atomic ensemble. Temporal beating is observed between the two directly generated Stokes fields in a single realization. The beat frequency is found to be a result of an AC Stark frequency shift effect. However, due to the spontaneous nature of the process, the phases of the two Stokes fields change from one realization to another so that the beat signal disappears after average over many realizations. On the other hand, the beat signal is recovered in a two-photon correlation measurement, showing a two-photon interference effect. The two-photon beat signal enables us to obtain dephasing information in the Raman process. The dephasing effect is found to depend on the temperature of the atomic medium.

Spin dynamics and domain formation of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical cavity

We consider a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) dispersively coupled to a unidirectional ring cavity. We show that the ability of a cavity to modify, in a highly nonlinear fashion, matter-wave phase shifts adds a new dimension to the study of spinor condensates both within and beyond the single-mode approximation. In addition to demonstrating strong matter-wave bistability as in our earlier publication [L. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 160403 (2009)], we show that the interplay between atomic and cavity fields can greatly enrich both the physics of critical slowing down in spin mixing dynamics and the physics of spin-domain formation in spinor condensates.
