Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Localization: Performance Analysis and Algorithm Design

The target sensing/localization performance is fundamentally limited by the line-of-sight link and severe signal attenuation over long distances. This paper considers a challenging scenario where the direct link between the base station (BS) and the target is blocked due to the surrounding blockages and leverages the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) with some active sensors, termed as \textit{semi-passive IRS}, for localization. To be specific, the active sensors receive echo signals reflected by the target and apply signal processing techniques to estimate the target location. We consider the joint time-of-arrival (ToA) and direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation for localization and derive the corresponding Cramér-Rao bound (CRB), and then a simple ToA/DoA estimator without iteration is proposed. In particular, the relationships of the CRB for ToA/DoA with the number of frames for IRS beam adjustments, number of IRS reflecting elements, and number of sensors are theoretically analyzed and demystified. Simulation results show that the proposed semi-passive IRS architecture provides sub-meter level positioning accuracy even over a long localization range from the BS to the target and also demonstrate a significant localization accuracy improvement compared to the fully passive IRS architecture.

Fairness Optimization of RSMA for Uplink Communication based on Intelligent Reflecting Surface

In this paper, we propose a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) scheme for uplink wireless communication systems with intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided. In the considered model, IRS is adopted to overcome power attenuation caused by path loss. We construct a max-min fairness optimization problem to obtain the resource allocation, including the receive beamforming at the base station (BS) and phase-shift beamforming at IRS. We also introduce a successive group decoding (SGD) algorithm at the receiver, which trades off the fairness and complexity of decoding. In the simulation, the results show that the proposed scheme has superiority in improving the fairness of uplink communication.

On the Performance of RIS-Aided Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave Transmission

In this paper, we investigate a state-of-the-art reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted spatial scattering modulation (SSM) scheme for millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, where a more practical scenario that the RIS is near the transmitter while the receiver is far from RIS is considered. To this end, the line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS links are utilized in the transmitter-RIS and RIS-receiver channels, respectively. By employing the maximum likelihood detector at the receiver, the conditional pairwise error probability (CPEP) expression for the RIS-SSM scheme is derived under the two scenarios that the received beam demodulation is correct or not. Furthermore, the union upper bound of average bit error probability (ABEP) is obtained based on the CPEP expression. Finally, the derivation results are exhaustively validated by the Monte Carlo simulations.

Sensing-Assisted Communication in Vehicular Networks with Intelligent Surface

The recent development of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) technology offers new opportunities to meet high-throughput and low-latency communication as well as high-resolution localization requirements in vehicular networks. However, considering the limited transmit power of the road site units (RSUs) and the relatively small radar cross section (RCS) of vehicles with random reflection coefficients, the power of echo signals may be too weak to be utilized for effective target detection and tracking. Moreover, high-frequency signals usually suffer from large fading loss when penetrating vehicles, which seriously degrades the quality of communication services inside the vehicles. To handle this issue, we propose a novel sensing-assisted communication mechanism by employing an intelligent omni-surface (IOS) on the surface of vehicles to enhance both sensing and communication (S&C) performance. To this end, we first propose a two-stage ISAC protocol, including the joint S&C stage and the communication-only stage, to fulfill more efficient communication performance improvements benefited from sensing. The achievable communication rate maximization problem is formulated by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming, the IOS phase shifts, and the duration of the joint S&C stage. However, solving this ISAC optimization problem is highly non-trivial since inaccurate estimation and measurement information renders the achievable rate lack of closed-form expression. To handle this issue, we first derive a closed-form expression of the achievable rate under uncertain location information, and then unveil a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of the joint S&C stage to offer useful insights for practical system design. Moreover, two typical scenarios including interference-limited and noise-limited cases are analyzed.

Analysis and Optimization of Wireless Federated Learning with Data Heterogeneity

With the rapid proliferation of smart mobile devices, federated learning (FL) has been widely considered for application in wireless networks for distributed model training. However, data heterogeneity, e.g., non-independently identically distributions and different sizes of training data among clients, poses major challenges to wireless FL. Limited communication resources complicate the implementation of fair scheduling which is required for training on heterogeneous data, and further deteriorate the overall performance. To address this issue, this paper focuses on performance analysis and optimization for wireless FL, considering data heterogeneity, combined with wireless resource allocation. Specifically, we first develop a closed-form expression for an upper bound on the FL loss function, with a particular emphasis on data heterogeneity described by a dataset size vector and a data divergence vector. Then we formulate the loss function minimization problem, under constraints on long-term energy consumption and latency, and jointly optimize client scheduling, resource allocation, and the number of local training epochs (CRE). Next, via the Lyapunov drift technique, we transform the CRE optimization problem into a series of tractable problems. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other benchmarks in terms of the learning accuracy and energy consumption.

The innermost jet in the hidden ultra-luminous X-ray source Cygnus X-3

Cygnus X-3 is a high-mass X-ray binary with a compact object accreting matter from a Wolf-Rayet donor star. Recently, it has been revealed by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) as a hidden Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) source with a luminosity above the Eddington limit along the direction of a narrow (opening angle <~32 degree) funnel. In between the IXPE observations, we observed Cyg X-3 with the European VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) Network at 22 GHz and the NICER X-ray instrument. To probe possible relations between the X-ray funnel and the potential radio jet from the ULX, we analyzed the simultaneous multi-wavelength data. Our high-resolution VLBI image reveals an elongated structure with a position angle of -3.2+/-0.4 degree, accurately perpendicular to the direction of the linear X-ray polarization. Because Cyg X-3 was in the radio quiescent state on 2022 November 10, we identify the mas-scale structure as the innermost radio jet. The finding indicates that the radio jet propagates along and within the funnel. Moreover, the jet is marginally resolved in the transverse direction. This possibly results from the strong stellar winds and the rapid orbital motion of the binary system.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Intelligent Reflecting Surface Optimization for TDD MultiUser MIMO Systems

In this letter, we investigate the discrete phase shift design of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a time division duplexing (TDD) multi-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. We modify the design of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) scheme so that we can maximizing the average downlink data transmission rate free from the sub-channel channel state information (CSI). Based on the characteristics of the model, we modify the proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm and integrate gated recurrent unit (GRU) to tackle the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed PPO-GRU surpasses the benchmarks in terms of performance, convergence speed, and training stability.

RIS-Aided Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave MIMO Transmissions

This paper investigates the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted spatial scattering modulation (SSM) scheme for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths are respectively considered in the transmitter-RIS and RIS-receiver channels. Based on the maximum likelihood detector, the conditional pairwise error probability (CPEP) expression for the RIS-SSM scheme is derived under the two cases of received beam correct and demodulation error. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form expressions of the unconditional pairwise error probability (UPEP) by employing two different methods: the probability density function and the moment-generating function expressions with a descending order of scatterer gains. To provide more useful insights, we derive the asymptotic UPEP and the diversity gain of the RIS-SSM scheme in the high SNR region. Depending on UPEP and the corresponding Euclidean distance, we get the union upper bound of the average bit error probability (ABEP). A new framework for ergodic capacity analysis is also provided to acquire the proposed system's effective capacity. Finally, all derivation results are validated via extensive Monte Carlo simulations, revealing that the proposed RIS-SSM scheme outperforms the benchmarks in terms of reliability.

Performance of RIS-Assisted Full-Duplex Space Shift Keying With Imperfect Self-Interference Cancellation

In this paper, we consider a full-duplex (FD) space shift keying (SSK) communication system, where information exchange between two users is assisted only by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In particular, the impact of loop interference (LI) between the transmit and receive antennas as well as residual self-interference (SI) from the RIS is considered. Based on the maximum likelihood detector, we derive the conditional pairwise error probability and the numerical integration expression for the unconditional pairwise error probability (UPEP). Since it is difficult to find a closed-form solution, we perform accurate estimation by the Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature (GCQ) method. To gain more useful insights, we derive an expression for UPEP in the high signal-to-noise ratio region and further give the average bit error probability (ABEP) expression. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to validate the derived results. It is found that SI and LI have severe impacts on system performance. Fortunately, these two disturbances can be well counteracted by increasing the number of RIS units.

Robust Weighted Sum-Rate Maximization for Transmissive RIS Transmitter Enabled RSMA Networks

Due to the low power consumption and low cost nature of transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS),in this paper, we propose a downlink multi-user rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) architecture based on the transmissive RIS transmitter, where the channel state information (CSI) is only accquired partially. We investigate the weighted sum-rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the power, RIS transmissive coefficients and common rate allocated to each user. Due to the coupling of optimization variables, the problem is nonconvex, and it is difficult to directly obtain the optimal solution. Hence, a block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm based on sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) is proposed to tackle it. Numerical results illustrate that the transmissive RIS transmitter with ratesplitting architecture has advantages over conventional space division multiple access (SDMA) and non-orthgonal multiple access (NOMA).

In-orbit background simulation of a type-B CATCH satellite

The Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters (CATCH) space mission plans to launch three types of micro-satellites (A, B, and C). The type-B CATCH satellites are dedicated to locating transients and detecting their time-dependent energy spectra. A type-B satellite is equipped with lightweight Wolter-I X-ray optics and an array of position-sensitive multi-pixel Silicon Drift Detectors. To optimize the scientific payloads for operating properly in orbit and performing the observations with high sensitivities, this work performs an in-orbit background simulation of a type-B CATCH satellite using the Geant4 toolkit. It shows that the persistent background is dominated by the cosmic X-ray diffuse background and the cosmic-ray protons. The dynamic background is also estimated considering trapped charged particles in the radiation belts and low-energy charged particles near the geomagnetic equator, which is dominated by the incident electrons outside the aperture. The simulated persistent background within the focal spot is used to estimate the observation sensitivity, i.e. 4.22$\times$10$^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ with an exposure of 10$^{4}$ s and a Crab-like source spectrum, which can be utilized further to optimize the shielding design. The simulated in-orbit background also suggests that the magnetic diverter just underneath the optics may be unnecessary in this kind of micro-satellites, because the dynamic background induced by charged particles outside the aperture is around 3 orders of magnitude larger than that inside the aperture.

Mobility-Aware Joint User Scheduling and Resource Allocation for Low Latency Federated Learning

As an efficient distributed machine learning approach, Federated learning (FL) can obtain a shared model by iterative local model training at the user side and global model aggregating at the central server side, thereby protecting privacy of users. Mobile users in FL systems typically communicate with base stations (BSs) via wireless channels, where training performance could be degraded due to unreliable access caused by user mobility. However, existing work only investigates a static scenario or random initialization of user locations, which fail to capture mobility in real-world networks. To tackle this issue, we propose a practical model for user mobility in FL across multiple BSs, and develop a user scheduling and resource allocation method to minimize the training delay with constrained communication resources. Specifically, we first formulate an optimization problem with user mobility that jointly considers user selection, BS assignment to users, and bandwidth allocation to minimize the latency in each communication round. This optimization problem turned out to be NP-hard and we proposed a delay-aware greedy search algorithm (DAGSA) to solve it. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art baselines and a certain level of user mobility could improve training performance.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Multi-Cluster AirComp via Dynamic Beamforming

This paper studies an multi-cluster over-the-air computation (AirComp) system, where an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assists the signal transmission from devices to an access point (AP). The clusters are activated to compute heterogeneous functions in a time-division manner. Specifically, two types of IRS beamforming (BF) schemes are proposed to reveal the performancecost tradeoff. One is the cluster-adaptive BF scheme, where each BF pattern is dedicated to one cluster, and the other is the dynamic BF scheme, which is applied to any number of IRS BF patterns. By deeply exploiting their inherent properties, both generic and lowcomplexity algorithms are proposed in which the IRS BF patterns, time and power resource allocation are jointly optimized. Numerical results show that IRS can significantly enhance the function computation performance, and demonstrate that the dynamic IRS BF scheme with half of the total IRS BF patterns can achieve near-optimal performance which can be deemed as a cost-efficient approach for IRS-aided multi-cluster AirComp systems.

A Laplacian Pyramid Based Generative H&E Stain Augmentation Network

Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining is a widely used sample preparation procedure for enhancing the saturation of tissue sections and the contrast between nuclei and cytoplasm in histology images for medical diagnostics. However, various factors, such as the differences in the reagents used, result in high variability in the colors of the stains actually recorded. This variability poses a challenge in achieving generalization for machine-learning based computer-aided diagnostic tools. To desensitize the learned models to stain variations, we propose the Generative Stain Augmentation Network (G-SAN) -- a GAN-based framework that augments a collection of cell images with simulated yet realistic stain variations. At its core, G-SAN uses a novel and highly computationally efficient Laplacian Pyramid (LP) based generator architecture, that is capable of disentangling stain from cell morphology. Through the task of patch classification and nucleus segmentation, we show that using G-SAN-augmented training data provides on average 15.7% improvement in F1 score and 7.3% improvement in panoptic quality, respectively. Our code is available at https://github.com/lifangda01/GSAN-Demo.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Free Space Optical Information and Power Transfer

Free space optical (FSO) transmission has emerged as a key candidate technology for 6G to expand new spectrum and improve network capacity due to its advantages of large bandwidth, low electromagnetic interference, and high energy efficiency. Resonant beam operating in the infrared band utilizes spatially separated laser cavities to enable safe and mobile high-power energy and high-rate information transmission but is limited by line-of-sight (LOS) channel. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted resonant beam simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system and establish an optical field propagation model to analyze the channel state information (CSI), in which LOS obstruction can be detected sensitively and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) transmission can be realized by changing the phased of resonant beam in RIS. Numerical results demonstrate that, apart from the transmission distance, the NLOS performance depends on both the horizontal and vertical positions of RIS. The maximum NLOS energy efficiency can achieve 55% within a transfer distance of 10m, a translation distance of $\pm$4mm, and rotation angle of $\pm$50°.

NNLL Resummation for Projected Three-Point Energy Correlator

The projected energy correlator measures the energy deposited in multiple detectors as a function of the largest angular distance $x_L = (1 - \cosχ_L)/2$ between detectors. The collinear limit $x_L\to 0$ of the projected energy correlator is particularly interesting for understanding the jet-substructures, while the large logarithms of $x_L$ could potentially spoil the perturbation theory and must be resummed. As a necessary ingredient for its resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, we calculate the two-loop jet functions for the projected three-point energy correlator (E3C), using direct integration method and the parameter space Integration-by-Part (IBP) method. We then present the NNLL resummation for $e^+e^-$ annihilation and an approximate NNLL resummation for $pp\rightarrow jj$ process, where the two-loop hard constant is estimated in the latter case. The convergence is improved and the hadronization effect in the collinear limit is suppressed when considering the ratio of E3C distribution to two-point energy-energy correlator (EEC). Our results show potential in precision determination of strong coupling constant using energy correlators from both $e^+e^-$ data and $pp$ data.

Intelligent Omni Surfaces assisted Integrated Multi Target Sensing and Multi User MIMO Communications

Drawing inspiration from the advantages of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) in wireless networks, this paper presents a novel design for intelligent omni surface (IOS) enabled integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). By harnessing the power of multi antennas and a multitude of elements, the dual-function base station (BS) and IOS collaborate to realize joint active and passive beamforming, enabling seamless 360-degree ISAC coverage. The objective is to maximize the minimum signal-tointerference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of multi-target sensing, while ensuring the multi-user multi-stream communications. To achieve this, a comprehensive optimization approach is employed, encompassing the design of radar receive vector, transmit beamforming matrix, and IOS transmissive and reflective coefficients. Due to the non-convex nature of the formulated problem, an auxiliary variable is introduced to transform it into a more tractable form. Consequently, the problem is decomposed into three subproblems based on the block coordinate descent algorithm. Semidefinite relaxation and successive convex approximation methods are leveraged to convert the sub-problem into a convex problem, while the iterative rank minimization algorithm and penalty function method ensure the equivalence. Furthermore, the scenario is extended to mode switching and time switching protocols. Simulation results validate the convergence and superior performance of the proposed algorithm compared to other benchmark algorithms.

Performance Analysis of RIS-Aided Space Shift Keying With Channel Estimation Errors

In this paper, we investigate the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted space shift keying (SSK) downlink communication systems under the imperfect channel state information (CSI), where the channel between the base station to RIS follows the Rayleigh fading, while the channel between the RIS to user equipment obeys the Rician fading. Based on the maximum likelihood detector, the conditional pairwise error probability of the composite channel is derived. Then, the probability density function for a non-central chi-square distribution with one degree of freedom is derived. Based on this, the closed-form analytical expression of the RIS-SSK scheme with imperfect CSI is derived. To gain more valuable insights, the asymptotic ABEP expression is also given. Finally, we validate the derived closed-form and asymptotic expressions by Monte Carlo simulations.
