IRS-Aided Overloaded Multi-Antenna Systems: Joint User Grouping and Resource Allocation

This paper studies an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multi-antenna simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system where an $M$-antenna access point (AP) serves $K$ single-antenna information users (IUs) and $J$ single-antenna energy users (EUs) with the aid of an IRS with phase errors. We explicitly concentrate on overloaded scenarios where $K + J > M$ and $K \geq M$. Our goal is to maximize the minimum throughput among all the IUs by optimizing the allocation of resources (including time, transmit beamforming at the AP, and reflect beamforming at the IRS), while guaranteeing the minimum amount of harvested energy at each EU. Towards this goal, we propose two user grouping (UG) schemes, namely, the non-overlapping UG scheme and the overlapping UG scheme, where the difference lies in whether identical IUs can exist in multiple groups. Different IU groups are served in orthogonal time dimensions, while the IUs in the same group are served simultaneously with all the EUs via spatial multiplexing. The two problems corresponding to the two UG schemes are mixed-integer non-convex optimization problems and difficult to solve optimally. We propose efficient algorithms for these two problems based on the big-M formulation, the penalty method, the block coordinate descent, and the successive convex approximation. Simulation results show that: 1) the non-robust counterparts of the proposed robust designs are unsuitable for practical IRS-aided SWIPT systems with phase errors since the energy harvesting constraints cannot be satisfied; 2) the proposed UG strategies can significantly improve the max-min throughput over the benchmark schemes without UG or adopting random UG; 3) the overlapping UG scheme performs much better than its non-overlapping counterpart when the absolute difference between $K$ and $M$ is small and the EH constraints are not stringent.

Hybrid Active-Passive IRS Assisted Energy-Efficient Wireless Communication

Deploying active reflecting elements at the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) increases signal amplification capability but incurs higher power consumption. Therefore, it remains a challenging and open problem to determine the optimal number of active/passive elements for maximizing energy efficiency (EE). To answer this question, we consider a hybrid active-passive IRS (H-IRS) assisted wireless communication system, where the H-IRS consists of both active and passive reflecting elements.Specifically, we study the optimization of the number of active/passive elements at the H-IRS to maximize EE. To this end, we first derive the closed-form expression for a near-optimal solution under the line-of-sight (LoS) channel case and obtain its optimal solution under the Rayleigh fading channel case. Then, an efficient algorithm is employed to obtain a high-quality sub-optimal solution for the EE maximization under the general Rician channel case. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the H-IRS for maximizing EE under different Rician factors and IRS locations.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Empowered Self-Interference Cancellation in Full-Duplex Systems

Compared with traditional half-duplex wireless systems, the application of emerging full-duplex (FD) technology can potentially double the system capacity theoretically. However, conventional techniques for suppressing self-interference (SI) adopted in FD systems require exceedingly high power consumption and expensive hardware. In this paper, we consider employing an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in the proximity of an FD base station (BS) to mitigate SI for simultaneously receiving data from uplink users and transmitting information to downlink users. The objective considered is to maximize the weighted sum-rate of the system by jointly optimizing the IRS phase shifts, the BS transmit beamformers, and the transmit power of the uplink users. To visualize the role of the IRS in SI cancellation by isolating other interference, we first study a simple scenario with one downlink user and one uplink user. To address the formulated non-convex problem, a low-complexity algorithm based on successive convex approximation is proposed. For the more general case considering multiple downlink and uplink users, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm based on element-wise optimization is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that the FD system with the proposed schemes can achieve a larger gain over the half-duplex system, and the IRS is able to achieve a balance between suppressing SI and providing beamforming gain.

Performance-Oriented Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Federated Learning

To efficiently exploit the massive amounts of raw data that are increasingly being generated in mobile edge networks, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising distributed learning technique. By collaboratively training a shared learning model on edge devices, raw data transmission and storage are replaced by the exchange of the local computed parameters/gradients in FL, which thus helps address latency and privacy issues. However, the number of resource blocks when using traditional orthogonal transmission strategies for FL linearly scales with the number of participating devices, which conflicts with the scarcity of communication resources. To tackle this issue, over-the-air computation (AirComp) has emerged recently which leverages the inherent superposition property of wireless channels to perform one-shot model aggregation. However, the aggregation accuracy in AirComp suffers from the unfavorable wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we consider the use of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) to mitigate this problem and improve FL performance with AirComp. Specifically, a performance-oriented design scheme that directly minimizes the optimality gap of the loss function is proposed to accelerate the convergence of AirComp-based FL. We first analyze the convergence behavior of the FL procedure with the absence of channel fading and noise. Based on the obtained optimality gap which characterizes the impact of channel fading and noise in different communication rounds on the ultimate performance of FL, we propose both online and offline approaches to tackle the resulting design problem. Simulation results demonstrate that such a performance-oriented design strategy can achieve higher test accuracy than the conventional isolated mean square error (MSE) minimization approach in FL.

Intelligent Surface Empowered Sensing and Communication: A Novel Mutual Assistance Design

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a promising paradigm to provide both sensing and communication (S&C) services in vehicular networks. However, the power of echo signals reflected from vehicles may be too weak to be used for future precise positioning, due to the practically small radar cross section of vehicles with random reflection/scattering coefficient. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel mutual assistance scheme for intelligent surface-mounted vehicles, where S&C are innovatively designed to assist each other for achieving an efficient win-win integration, i.e., sensing-assisted phase shift design and communication-assisted high-precision sensing. Specifically, we first derive closed-form expressions of the echo power and achievable rate under uncertain angle information. Then, the communication rate is maximized while satisfying sensing requirements, which is proved to be a monotonic optimization problem on time allocation. Furthermore, we unveil the feasible condition of the problem and propose a polyblock-based optimal algorithm. Simulation results validate that the performance trade-off bound of S&C is significantly enlarged by the novel design exploiting mutual assistance in intelligent surface-aided vehicular networks.

UAV-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication: Opportunities and Challenges

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has attracted growing research interests in the context of sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, in which UAVs will be exploited as aerial wireless platforms to provide better coverage and enhanced sensing and communication (S&C) services. However, due to the UAVs' size, weight, and power (SWAP) constraints, controllable mobility, and line-of-sight (LoS) air-ground channels, UAV-enabled ISAC introduces both new opportunities and challenges. This article provides an overview of UAV-enabled ISAC, and proposes various solutions for optimizing the S&C performance. In particular, we first introduce UAV-enabled joint S&C, and discuss UAV motion control, wireless resource allocation, and interference management for the cases of single and multiple UAVs. Then, we present two application scenarios for exploiting the synergy between S&C, namely sensing-assisted UAV communication and communication-assisted UAV sensing. Finally, we highlight several interesting research directions to guide and motivate future work.

Transmissive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Transmitter Empowered Cognitive RSMA Networks

In this paper, we investigated the downlink transmission problem of a cognitive radio network (CRN) equipped with a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS) transmitter. In order to achieve low power consumption and high-rate multi-streams communication, time-modulated arrays (TMA) is implemented and users access the network using rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). With such a network framework, a multi-objective optimization problem with joint design of the precoding matrix and the common stream rate is constructed to achieve higher energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE). Since the objective function is a non-convex fractional function, we proposed a joint optimization algorithm based on difference-of-convex (DC) programming and successive convex approximation (SCA). Numerical results show that under this framework the proposed algorithm can considerably improve and balance the EE and SE.

VLBI Astrometry of Radio Stars to Link Radio and Optical Celestial Reference Frames. I. HD 199178 $\&$ AR Lacertae

To accurately link the radio and optical Celestial Reference Frames (CRFs) at optical bright end, i.e., with Gaia G band magnitude < 13, increasing number and improving sky distribution of radio stars with accurate astrometric parameters from both Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and Gaia measurements are mandatory. We selected two radio stars HD 199178 and AR Lacertae as the target for a pilot program for the frame link, using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 15 GHz at six epochs spanning about 1 year, to measure their astrometric parameters. The measured parallax of HD 199178 is $8.949 \pm 0.059$ mas and the proper motion is $μ_αcos δ= 26.393 \pm 0.093$, $μ_δ= -0.950 \pm 0.083~mas~yr^{-1}$, while the parallax of AR Lac is $23.459 \pm 0.094$ mas and the proper motion is $μ_αcos δ= -51.906 \pm 0.138$, $μ_δ= 46.732 \pm 0.131~mas~yr^{-1}$. Our VLBI measured astrometric parameters have accuracies about 4-5 times better than the corresponding historic VLBI measurements and comparable accuracies with those from Gaia, validating the feasibility of frame link using radio stars. With the updated astrometric parameters for these two stars, there is a 25% reduction of the uncertainties on the Y axis for both orientation and spin parameters.

Resource Allocation in the RIS Assisted SCMA Cellular Network Coexisting with D2D Communications

The cellular network coexisting with device-to-device (D2D) communications has been studied extensively. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are promising technologies for the evolution of 5G, 6G and beyond. Besides, sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is considered suitable for next-generation wireless network in code-domain NOMA. In this paper, we consider the RIS-aided uplink SCMA cellular network simultaneously with D2D users. We formulate the optimization problem which aims to maximize the cellular sum-rate by jointly designing D2D users resource block (RB) association, the transmitted power for both cellular users and D2D users, and the phase shifts at the RIS. The power limitation and users communication requirements are considered. The problem is non-convex, and it is challenging to solve it directly. To handle this optimization problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm based on block coordinate descent (BCD) method. The original problem is decoupled into three subproblems to solve separately. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the sum-rate performance over various schemes.

Collaborative Multi-BS Power Management for Dense Radio Access Network using Deep Reinforcement Learning

Network energy efficiency is a main pillar in the design and operation of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we investigate a dense radio access network (dense-RAN) capable of radiated power management at the base station (BS). Aiming to improve the long-term network energy efficiency, an optimization problem is formulated by collaboratively managing multi-BSs radiated power levels with constraints on the users traffic volume and achievable rate. Considering stochastic traffic arrivals at the users and time-varying network interference, we first formulate the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and then develop a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on the cloud-RAN operation scheme. To tackle the trade-off between complexity and performance, the overall optimization of multi-BSs energy efficiency with the multiplicative complexity constraint is modeled to achieve nearoptimal performance by using a deep Q-network (DQN). In DQN,each BS first maximizes its individual energy efficiency, and then cooperates with other BSs to maximize the overall multiBSs energy efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can converge faster and enjoy a network energy efficiency improvement by 5% and 10% compared with the benchmarks of the Q-learning and sleep schemes, respectively.

Task-Oriented Delay-Aware Multi-Tier Computing in Cell-free Massive MIMO Systems

Multi-tier computing can enhance the task computation by multi-tier computing nodes. In this paper, we propose a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) aided computing system by deploying multi-tier computing nodes to improve the computation performance. At first, we investigate the computational latency and the total energy consumption for task computation, regarded as total cost. Then, we formulate a total cost minimization problem to design the bandwidth allocation and task allocation, while considering realistic heterogenous delay requirements of the computational tasks. Due to the binary task allocation variable, the formulated optimization problem is nonconvex. Therefore, we solve the bandwidth allocation and task allocation problem by decoupling the original optimization problem into bandwidth allocation and task allocation subproblems. As the bandwidth allocation problem is a convex optimization problem, we first determine the bandwidth allocation for given task allocation strategy, followed by conceiving the traditional convex optimization strategy to obtain the bandwidth allocation solution. Based on the asymptotic property of received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) under the cell-free massive MIMO setting and bandwidth allocation solution, we formulate a dual problem to solve the task allocation subproblem by relaxing the binary constraint with Lagrange partial relaxation for heterogenous task delay requirements. At last, simulation results are provided to demonstrate that our proposed task offloading scheme performs better than the benchmark schemes, where the minimum-cost optimal offloading strategy for heterogeneous delay requirements of the computational tasks may be controlled by the asymptotic property of the received SINR in our proposed cell-free massive MIMO-aided multi-tier computing systems.

Design and Optimization for Transmissive RIS Transceiver Enabled Uplink Communication Systems

In this paper, a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) enabled uplink communication system with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is investigated. Specifically, a non-conventional receiver architecture equipped with a single receiving horn antenna and a transmissive RIS is first proposed, and a far-near field channel model based on planar waves and spherical waves is also given. Then, in order to maximize the system sum-rate of uplink communications, we formulate a joint optimization problem over subcarrier allocation, power allocation and RIS transmissive coefficient design while taking account of user quality-of-service (QoS) constraint. Due to the coupling of optimization variables, the optimization problem is non-convex, so it is challenging to solve it directly. In order to tackle this problem, the alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is utilized to decouple the optimization variables and divide the problem into two sub-problems to solve. First, the problem of joint subcarrier allocation and power allocation is solved via the Lagrangian dual decomposition method. Then, the RIS transmissive coefficient design scheme can be obtained by applying difference-of-convex (DC) programming, successive convex approximation (SCA) and penalty function methods. Finally, the two sub-problems are iterated alternately until convergence is achieved. Numerical results verify that the proposed algorithm has good convergence performance and can improve sum-rate of the proposed system compared with other benchmark algorithms.

Joint Device Activity Detection, Channel Estimation and Signal Detection for Massive Grant-free Access via BiGAMP

Massive access has been challenging for the fifth generation (5G) and beyond since the abundance of devices causes communication overload to skyrocket. In an uplink massive access scenario, device traffic is sporadic in any given coherence time. Thus, channels across the antennas of each device exhibit correlation, which can be characterized by the row sparse channel matrix structure. In this work, we develop a bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiGAMP) algorithm based on the row sparse channel matrix structure. This algorithm can jointly detect device activities, estimate channels, and detect signals in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems by alternating updates between channel matrices and signal matrices. The signal observation provides additional information for performance improvement compared to the existing algorithms. We further analyze state evolution (SE) to measure the performance of the proposed algorithm and characterize the convergence condition for SE. Moreover, we perform theoretical analysis on the error probability of device activity detection, the mean square error of channel estimation, and the symbol error rate of signal detection. The numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the state-of-the-art methods in DADCE-SD, and the numerical results are relatively close to the theoretical analysis results.

Quadrature Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave Transmission

In this letter, we investigate a novel quadrature spatial scattering modulation (QSSM) transmission technique based on millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, in which the transmitter generates two orthogonal beams targeting candidate scatterers in the channel to carry the real and imaginary parts of the conventional signal, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum likelihood (ML) detector is adopted at the receiver to recover the received beams and signals. Based on the ML detector, we derive the closed-form average bit error probability (ABEP) expression of the QSSM scheme. Furthermore, we evaluate the asymptotic ABEP expression of the proposed scheme. Monte Carlo simulations verify the exactness and tightness of the derivation results. It is shown that the ABEP performance of QSSM is better than that of traditional spatial scattering modulation.

The parallax and 3D kinematics of water masers in the massive star-forming region G034.43+0.24

We report a trigonometric parallax measurement of 22 GHz water masers in the massive star-forming region G034.43+0.24 as part of the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) Survey using the Very Long Baseline Array. The parallax is 0.330$\pm$50.018 mas, corresponding to a distance of $3.03^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$ kpc. This locates G034.43+0.24 near the inner edge of the Sagittarius spiral arm and at one end of a linear distribution of massive young stars which cross nearly the full width of the arm. The measured 3-dimensional motion of G034.43+0.24 indicates a near-circular Galactic orbit. The water masers display arc-like distributions, possibly bow shocks, associated with winds from one or more massive young stars.

Adaptive Supervised PatchNCE Loss for Learning H&E-to-IHC Stain Translation with Inconsistent Groundtruth Image Pairs

Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining highlights the molecular information critical to diagnostics in tissue samples. However, compared to H&E staining, IHC staining can be much more expensive in terms of both labor and the laboratory equipment required. This motivates recent research that demonstrates that the correlations between the morphological information present in the H&E-stained slides and the molecular information in the IHC-stained slides can be used for H&E-to-IHC stain translation. However, due to a lack of pixel-perfect H&E-IHC groundtruth pairs, most existing methods have resorted to relying on expert annotations. To remedy this situation, we present a new loss function, Adaptive Supervised PatchNCE (ASP), to directly deal with the input to target inconsistencies in a proposed H&E-to-IHC image-to-image translation framework. The ASP loss is built upon a patch-based contrastive learning criterion, named Supervised PatchNCE (SP), and augments it further with weight scheduling to mitigate the negative impact of noisy supervision. Lastly, we introduce the Multi-IHC Stain Translation (MIST) dataset, which contains aligned H&E-IHC patches for 4 different IHC stains critical to breast cancer diagnosis. In our experiment, we demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing image-to-image translation methods for stain translation to multiple IHC stains. All of our code and datasets are available at https://github.com/lifangda01/AdaptiveSupervisedPatchNCE.

Insight-HXMT and GECAM-C observations of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A

GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected since the discovery of this kind of energetic explosions. However, an accurate measurement of the prompt emission properties of this burst is very challenging due to its exceptional brightness. With joint observations of \textit{Insight}-HXMT and GECAM-C, we made an unprecedentedly accurate measurement of the emission during the first $\sim$1800 s of GRB 221009A, including its precursor, main emission (ME, which dominates the burst in flux), flaring emission and early afterglow, in the hard X-ray to soft gamma-ray band from $\sim$ 10 keV to $\sim$ 6 MeV. Based on the GECAM-C unsaturated data of the ME, we measure a record-breaking isotropic equivalent energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) of $\bf \sim 1.5 \times 10^{55}$ erg, which is about eight times the total rest-mass energy of the Sun. The early afterglow data require a significant jet break between 650 s and 1100 s, most likely at $\sim950$ s from the afterglow starting time $T_{AG}$, which corresponds to a jet opening angle of $\sim {0.7^\circ} \ (η_γn)^{1/8}$, where $n$ is the ambient medium density in units of $\rm cm^{-3}$ and $η_γ$ is the ratio between $γ$-ray energy and afterglow kinetic energy. The beaming-corrected total $γ$-ray energy $E_γ$ is $\sim 1.15 \times10^{51} \ (η_γn)^{1/4}$ erg, which is typical for long GRBs. These results suggest that this GRB may have a special central engine, which could launch and collimate a very narrowly beamed jet with an ordinary energy budget, leading to exceptionally luminous gamma-ray radiation per unit solid angle. Alternatively, more GRBs might have such a narrow and bright beam, which are missed by an unfavorable viewing angle or have been detected without distance measurement.

Intermediate-mass black holes: finding of episodic, large-scale and powerful jet activity in a dwarf galaxy

Dwarf galaxies are characterised by a very low luminosity and low mass. Because of significant accretion and ejection activity of massive black holes, some dwarf galaxies also host low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In a few dwarf AGNs, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations have found faint non-thermal radio emission. SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 is a dwarf AGN owning an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass of $M_{BH} = 3.6^{+5.9}_{-2.3} \times 10^5 M_{sun}$ and showing a rarely-seen two-component radio structure in its radio nucleus. To further probe their nature, i.e. the IMBH jet activity, we performed additional deep observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.66 GHz and 4.99 GHz. We find the more diffuse emission regions and structure details. These new EVN imaging results allow us to reveal a two-sided jet morphology with a size up to about 150 mas (projected length $\sim$140 pc) and a radio luminosity of about $3\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The peak feature has an optically thin radio spectrum and thus more likely represents a relatively young ejecta instead of a jet base. The EVN study on SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 demonstrates the existence of episodic, relatively large-scale and powerful IMBH jet activity in dwarf AGNs. Moreover, we collected a small sample of VLBI-detected dwarf AGNs and investigated their connections with normal AGNs. We notice that these radio sources in the dwarf AGNs tend to have steep spectra and small linear sizes, and possibly represent ejecta from scaled-down episodic jet activity.
