Improving Utility of Differentially Private Mechanisms through Cryptography-based Technologies: a Survey

Due to successful applications of data analysis technologies in many fields, various institutions have accumulated a large amount of data to improve their services. As the speed of data collection has increased dramatically over the last few years, an increasing number of users are growing concerned about their personal information. Therefore, privacy preservation has become an urgent problem to be solved. Differential privacy as a strong privacy preservation tool has attracted significant attention. In this survey, we focus on improving utility of between differentially private mechanisms through technologies related to cryptography. In particular, we firstly focus on how to improve utility through anonymous communication. Then, we summarize how to improve utility by combining differentially private mechanisms with homomorphic encryption schemes. Next, we summarize hardness results of what is impossible to achieve for differentially private mechanisms' utility from the view of cryptography. Differential privacy borrowed intuitions from cryptography and still benefits from the progress of cryptography. To summarize the state-of-the-art and to benefit future researches, we are motivated to provide this survey.

Lyapunov optimizing measures and periodic measures for $C^2$ expanding maps

We prove that there exists an open and dense subset $\mathcal{U}$ in the space of $C^{2}$ expanding self-maps of the circle $\mathbb{T}$ such that the Lyapunov minimizing measures of any $T\in{\mathcal U}$ are uniquely supported on a periodic orbit. This answers a conjecture of Jenkinson-Morris in the $C^2$ topology.

Multiply minimal points for the product of iterates

The multiple Birkhoff recurrence theorem states that for any $d\in\mathbb N$, every system $(X,T)$ has a multiply recurrent point $x$, i.e. $(x,x,\ldots, x)$ is recurrent under $τ_d=:T\times T^2\times \ldots \times T^d$. It is natural to ask if there always is a multiply minimal point, i.e. a point $x$ such that $(x,x,\ldots,x)$ is $τ_d$-minimal. A negative answer is presented in this paper via studying the horocycle flows. However, it is shown that for any minimal system $(X,T)$ and any non-empty open set $U$, there is $x\in U$ such that $\{n\in{\mathbb Z}: T^nx\in U, \ldots, T^{dn}x\in U\}$ is piecewise syndetic; and that for a PI minimal system, any $M$-subsystem of $(X^d, τ_d)$ is minimal.

Positive entropy implies chaos along any infinite sequence

Let $G$ be an infinite countable discrete amenable group. For any $G$-action on a compact metric space $(X,ρ)$, it turns out that if the action has positive topological entropy, then for any sequence $\{s_i\}_{i=1}^{+\infty}$ with pairwise distinct elements in $G$ there exists a Cantor subset $K$ of $X$ which is Li-Yorke chaotic along this sequence, that is, for any two distinct points $x,y\in K$, one has \[\limsup_{i\to+\infty}ρ(s_i x,s_iy)>0,\ \text{and}\ \liminf_{i\to+\infty}ρ(s_ix,s_iy)=0.\]

Hidden anomalous Hall effect in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ with chiral superconductivity dominated by the Ru $d_{xy}$ orbital

The polar Kerr effect in superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ implies finite ac anomalous Hall conductivity. Since intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is not expected for a chiral superconducting pairing developed on the single Ru $d_{xy}$ orbital, multiorbital chiral pairing actively involving the Ru $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals has been proposed as a potential mechanism. Here we propose that AHE could still arise even if the chiral superconductivity is predominantly driven by the $d_{xy}$ orbital. This is demonstrated through two separate models which take into account subdominant orbitals in the Cooper pairing, one involving the oxygen $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals in the RuO$_2$ plane, and another the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. In both models, finite orbital mixing between the dominant $d_{xy}$ and the other orbitals may induce inter-orbital pairing between them, and the resultant states support intrinsic AHE, with Kerr rotation angles that could potentially reconcile with the experimental observation. Our proposal therefore sheds new light on the microscopic pairing in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We also show that intrinsic Hall effect is generally absent for non-chiral states such as $\mathcal{S}+i\mathcal{D}$, $\mathcal{D}+i\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{D}+i\mathcal{G}$, which provides a clear constraint on the symmetry of the superconducting order in this material.

Anomalous Hall effect in single-band chiral superconductors from impurity superlattices

Unlike anomalous quantum Hall insulators, clean single-band chiral superconductors do not exhibit intrinsic Hall effect at the one-loop approximation. Finite ac Hall conductance was found to emerge beyond one-loop, such as with vertex corrections associated with extrinsic random impurity scatterings. In this paper, we investigate the effect of impurities embedded in single-band chiral superconductors in a superlattice pattern, instead of in random distributions. The impurity-induced Bogoliubov quasiparticle bound states hybridize to form subgap bands, constituting an emergent low-energy effective theory whose Hall effect can be studied with ease. We demonstrate that the occurrence of the Hall effect depends on the superlattice geometry and on the parity of the chiral pairing. In particular, due to the mixed particle-hole character of the subgap states, the Hall conductance may arise at the one-loop level of the current-current correlator in our effective model. Our theory provides a new insight into the impurity-induced anomalous Hall effect in chiral superconductors.

Achieving User-Side Fairness in Contextual Bandits

Personalized recommendation based on multi-arm bandit (MAB) algorithms has shown to lead to high utility and efficiency as it can dynamically adapt the recommendation strategy based on feedback. However, unfairness could incur in personalized recommendation. In this paper, we study how to achieve user-side fairness in personalized recommendation. We formulate our fair personalized recommendation as a modified contextual bandit and focus on achieving fairness on the individual whom is being recommended an item as opposed to achieving fairness on the items that are being recommended. We introduce and define a metric that captures the fairness in terms of rewards received for both the privileged and protected groups. We develop a fair contextual bandit algorithm, Fair-LinUCB, that improves upon the traditional LinUCB algorithm to achieve group-level fairness of users. Our algorithm detects and monitors unfairness while it learns to recommend personalized videos to students to achieve high efficiency. We provide a theoretical regret analysis and show that our algorithm has a slightly higher regret bound than LinUCB. We conduct numerous experimental evaluations to compare the performances of our fair contextual bandit to that of LinUCB and show that our approach achieves group-level fairness while maintaining a high utility.

Unexpected Information Leakage of Differential Privacy Due to Linear Property of Queries

The differential privacy is a widely accepted conception of privacy preservation and the Laplace mechanism is a famous instance of differential privacy mechanisms to deal with numerical data. In this paper, we find that the differential privacy does not take liner property of queries into account, resulting in unexpected information leakage. In specific, the linear property makes it possible to divide one query into two queries such as $q(D)=q(D_1)+q(D_2)$ if $D=D_1\cup D_2$ and $D_1\cap D_2=\emptyset$. If attackers try to obtain an answer of $q(D)$, they not only can issue the query $q(D)$, but also can issue the $q(D_1)$ and calculate the $q(D_2)$ by themselves as long as they know $D_2$. By different divisions of one query, attackers can obtain multiple different answers for the query from differential privacy mechanisms. However, from attackers' perspective and from differential privacy mechanisms' perspective, the totally consumed privacy budget is different if divisions are delicately designed. The difference leads to unexpected information leakage because the privacy budget is the key parameter to control the amount of legally released information from differential privacy mechanisms. In order to demonstrate the unexpected information leakage, we present a membership inference attacks against the Laplace mechanism.

Community Detection by a Riemannian Projected Proximal Gradient Method

Community detection plays an important role in understanding and exploiting the structure of complex systems. Many algorithms have been developed for community detection using modularity maximization or other techniques. In this paper, we formulate the community detection problem as a constrained nonsmooth optimization problem on the compact Stiefel manifold. A Riemannian projected proximal gradient method is proposed and used to solve the problem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use Riemannian optimization for community detection problem. Numerical experimental results on synthetic benchmarks and real-world networks show that our algorithm is effective and outperforms several state-of-art algorithms.

Analysis of the Neighborhood Pattern Similarity Measure for the Role Extraction Problem

In this paper we analyze an indirect approach, called the Neighborhood Pattern Similarity approach, to solve the so-called role extraction problem of a large-scale graph. The method is based on the preliminary construction of a node similarity matrix which allows in a second stage to group together, with an appropriate clustering technique, the nodes that are assigned to have the same role. The analysis builds on the notion of ideal graphs where all nodes with the same role, are also structurally equivalent.

Half-Magnetic Topological Insulator

Topological magnets are a new family of quantum materials providing great potential to realize emergent phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion-insulator state. Here we present our discovery that stoichiometric ferromagnet MnBi8Te13 with natural heterostructure MnBi2Te4-(Bi2Te3)3 is an unprecedented half-magnetic topological insulator, with the magnetization existing at the MnBi2Te4 surface but not at the opposite surface terminated by triple Bi2Te3 layers. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements unveil a massive Dirac gap at the MnBi2Te4 surface, and gapless Dirac cone on the other side. Remarkably, the Dirac gap (~28 meV) at MnBi2Te4 surface decreases monotonically with increasing temperature and closes right at the Curie temperature, thereby representing the first smoking-gun spectroscopic evidence of magnetization-induced topological surface gap among all known magnetic topological materials. We further demonstrate theoretically that the half-magnetic topological insulator is desirable to realize the half-quantized surface anomalous Hall effect, which serves as a direct proof of the general concept of axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems.

Polynomial mean complexity and Logarithmic Sarnak conjecture

In this paper, we reduce the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture to the $\{0,1\}$-symbolic systems with polynomial mean complexity. By showing that the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture holds for any topologically dynamical system with sublinear complexity, we provide a variant of the $1$-Fourier uniformity conjecture, where the frequencies are restricted to any subset of $[0,1]$ with packing dimension less than one.

Edge current and orbital angular momentum of chiral superfluids revisited

Cooper pairs in chiral superfluids carry quantized units of relative orbital angular momentum (OAM). Various predictions of the intrinsic OAM density or the macroscopic OAM of a two-dimensional chiral superfluid differ by several orders of magnitude, which constitute the so-called Angular Momentum Paradox. Following several previous studies, we substantiate the semiclassical Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory of the single-particle edge current and OAM in two-dimensional chiral superfluids in the BCS limit. The analysis provides a simple intuitive understanding for the vanishing of OAM for a non-p-wave chiral superfluid (such as $d+id$) confined in a rigid potential. When generalized to anisotropic chiral superconductors and three-dimensional chiral superfluids, the theory similarly returns an accurate description. We also present a detailed numerical study of the chiral phases in the BEC limit. Our study suggests that, in both BCS and BEC phases the relative OAM of the individual Cooper pairs contribute to the total OAM additively, and that in both phases the corresponding macroscopic OAM density distribution is localized at the boundary.

Vortex end Majorana zero modes in superconducting Dirac and Weyl semimetals

Time-reversal invariant (TRI) Dirac and Weyl semimetals in three dimensions (3D) can host open Fermi arcs and spin-momentum locking Fermi loops on the surfaces. We find that when they become superconducting with $s$-wave pairing and the doping is lower than a critical level, straight $π$-flux vortex lines terminating at surfaces with Fermi arcs or spin-momentum locking Fermi loops can realize 1D topological superconductivity and harbor Majorana zero modes at their ends. Remarkably, we find that the vortex-generation-associated Zeeman field can open (when the surfaces have only Fermi arcs) or enhance the topological gap protecting Majorana zero modes, which is contrary to the situation in superconducting topological insulators. By studying the tilting effect of bulk Dirac and Weyl cones, we further find that type-I Dirac and Weyl semimetals in general have a much broader topological regime than type-II ones. Our findings build up a connection between TRI Dirac and Weyl semimetals and Majorana zero modes in vortices.

Topological characteristic factors and nilsystems

We prove that the maximal infinite step pro-nilfactor $X_\infty$ of a minimal dynamical system $(X,T)$ is the topological characteristic factor in a certain sense. Namely, we show that by an almost one to one modification of $π:X \rightarrow X_\infty$, the induced open extension $π^*:X^* \rightarrow X^*_\infty$ has the following property: for $x$ in a dense $G_δ$ set of $X^*$, the orbit closure $L_x=\overline{\mathcal{O}}((x,x,\ldots,x), T\times T^2\times \ldots \times T^d)$ is $(π^*)^{(d)}$-saturated, i.e. $L_x=((π^*)^{(d)})^{-1}(π^*)^{(d)}(L_x)$. Using results derived from the above fact, we are able to answer several open questions: (1) if $(X,T^k)$ is minimal for some $k\ge 2$, then for any $d\in {\mathbb N}$ and any $0\le j<k$ there is a sequence $\{n_i\}$ of $\mathbb Z$ with $n_i\equiv j\ (\text{mod}\ k)$ such that $T^{n_i}x\rightarrow x, T^{2n_i}x\rightarrow x, \ldots, T^{dn_i}x\rightarrow x$ for $x$ in a dense $G_δ$ subset of $X$; (2) if $(X,T)$ is totally minimal, then $\{T^{n^2}x:n\in {\mathbb Z}\}$ is dense in $X$ for $x$ in a dense $G_δ$ subset of $X$; (3) for any $d\in\mathbb N$ and any minimal system, which is an open extension of its maximal distal factor, ${\bf RP}^{[d]}={\bf AP}^{[d]}$, where the latter is the regionally proximal relation of order $d$ along arithmetic progressions.

Half-quantum vortices on c-axis domain walls in chiral p-wave superconductors

Chiral superconductors are two-fold degenerate and domains of opposite chirality can form, separated by domain walls. There are indications of such domain formation in the quasi two-dimensional putative chiral $p$-wave superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, yet no experiment has explicitly resolved individual domains in this material. In this work, $c$-axis domain walls lying parallel to the layers in chiral $p$-wave superconductors are explored from a theoretical point of view. First, using both a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau and a quasiclassical Bogoliubov-deGennes approach, a consistent qualitative description of the domain wall structure is obtained. While these domains are decoupled in the isotropic limit, there is a finite coupling in anisotropic systems and the domain wall can be treated as an effective Josephson junction. In the second part, the formation and structure of half-quantum vortices (HQV) on such $c$-axis domain walls are discussed.

Minimal systems with finitely many ergodic measures

In this paper it is proved that if a minimal system has the property that its sequence entropy is uniformly bounded for all sequences, then it has only finitely many ergodic measures and is an almost finite to one extension of its maximal equicontinuous factor. This result is obtained as an application of a general criteria which states that if a minimal system is an almost finite to one extension of its maximal equicontinuous factor and has no infinite independent sets of length $k$ for some $k\ge 2$, then it has only finitely many ergodic measures.

Hybridization-Induced Gapped and Gapless States on the Surfaces of Magnetic Topological Insulators

The layered MnBi2nTe3n+1 family represents the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM TI, protected by a combination symmetry ) ever discovered, providing an ideal platform to explore novel physics such as quantum anomalous Hall effect at elevated temperature and axion electrodynamics. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on this family have revealed that all terminations exhibit (nearly) gapless topological surface states (TSSs) within the AFM state, violating the definition of the AFM TI, as the surfaces being studied should be -breaking and opening a gap. Here we explain this curious paradox using a surface-bulk band hybridization picture. Combining ARPES and first-principles calculations, we prove that only an apparent gap is opened by hybridization between TSSs and bulk bands. The observed (nearly) gapless features are consistently reproduced by tight-binding simulations where TSSs are coupled to a Rashba-split bulk band. The Dirac-cone-like spectral features are actually of bulk origin, thus not sensitive to the-breaking at the AFM surfaces. This picture explains the (nearly) gapless behaviour found in both Bi2Te3- and MnBi2Te4-terminated surfaces and is applicable to all terminations of MnBi2nTe3n+1 family. Our findings highlight the role of band hybridization, superior to magnetism in this case, in shaping the general surface band structure in magnetic topological materials for the first time.
