Ergodic theory of Random Anosov systems mixing on fibers

In this paper, we study the complicated dynamics of Anosov systems driven by an external force in the context of geometric theory (an abundance of random periodic points and random horseshoes) and smooth ergodic theory (random periodic measures and random Liv\v sic Theorem).

Regionally proximal relation of order $d$ along arithmetic progressions and nilsystems

The regionally proximal relation of order $d$ along arithmetic progressions, namely ${\bf AP}^{[d]}$ for $d\in \N$, is introduced and investigated. It turns out that if $(X,T)$ is a topological dynamical system with ${\bf AP}^{[d]}=Δ$, then each ergodic measure of $(X,T)$ is isomorphic to a $d$-step pro-nilsystem, and thus $(X,T)$ has zero entropy. Moreover, it is shown that if $(X,T)$ is a strictly ergodic distal system with the property that the maximal topological and measurable $d$-step pro-nilsystems are isomorphic, then ${\bf AP}^{[d]}={\bf RP}^{[d]}$ for each $d\in {\mathbb N}$. It follows that for a minimal $\infty$-pro-nilsystem, ${\bf AP}^{[d]}={\bf RP}^{[d]}$ for each $d\in {\mathbb N}$. An example which is a strictly ergodic distal system with discrete spectrum whose maximal equicontinuous factor is not isomorphic to the Kronecker factor is constructed.

Fairness through Equality of Effort

Fair machine learning is receiving an increasing attention in machine learning fields. Researchers in fair learning have developed correlation or association-based measures such as demographic disparity, mistreatment disparity, calibration, causal-based measures such as total effect, direct and indirect discrimination, and counterfactual fairness, and fairness notions such as equality of opportunity and equal odds that consider both decisions in the training data and decisions made by predictive models. In this paper, we develop a new causal-based fairness notation, called equality of effort. Different from existing fairness notions which mainly focus on discovering the disparity of decisions between two groups of individuals, the proposed equality of effort notation helps answer questions like to what extend a legitimate variable should change to make a particular individual achieve a certain outcome level and addresses the concerns whether the efforts made to achieve the same outcome level for individuals from the protected group and that from the unprotected group are different. We develop algorithms for determining whether an individual or a group of individuals is discriminated in terms of equality of effort. We also develop an optimization-based method for removing discriminatory effects from the data if discrimination is detected. We conduct empirical evaluations to compare the equality of effort and existing fairness notion and show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

Synchronization in discrete-time, discrete-state Random Dynamical Systems

We characterize synchronization phenomenon in discrete-time, discrete-state random dynamical systems, with random and probabilistic Boolean networks as particular examples. In terms of multiplicative ergodic properties of the induced linear cocycle, we show such a random dynamical system with finite state synchronizes if and only if the Lyapunov exponent $0$ has simple multiplicity. For the case of countable state space, characterization of synchronization is provided in terms of the spectral subspace corresponding to the Lyapunov exponent $-\infty$. In addition, for both cases of finite and countable state spaces, the mechanism of partial synchronization is described by partitioning the state set into synchronized subsets. Applications to biological networks are also discussed.

Exotic Cooper pairing in multi-orbital models of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The unconventional superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ continues to defy a unified interpretation. In this paper, we focus on some novel aspects of its superconducting pairing by exploiting the orbital degree of freedom in this material. The multi-orbital nature, combined with the symmetry of the orbitals involved, leads to a plethora of exotic Cooper pairings not accessible in single-orbital systems. Essential physics is illustrated first using a two-orbital model with $d_{xz}$- and $d_{yz}$-orbitals. We classify the gap functions according to the underlying lattice symmetries, analyze the effective theories of a few representative pairings, and make connections to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in the course. In particular, we show how spin-orbit coupling may entangle spin-triplet and spin-singlet pairings. For completeness, the classification is generalized to the three-orbital model involving the $d_{xy}$-orbital as well. The orbital-basis approach distinguishes from the itinerant-band description for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, and hence offers an alternative perspective to investigate its enigmatic superconducting state.

Possible 'symmetry-imposed' near-nodal two-dimensional p-wave pairing in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

One key feature of the multi-orbital superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is the presence of nodal or near-nodal quasiparticle excitations revealed in a wide variety of experiments. Typically, a nodal gap structure in a two-dimensional model would be inconsistent with the chiral or helical p-wave interpretations. However, we demonstrate that true gap nodes may emerge along certain high-symmetry directions on the quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surfaces, if the multi-orbital chiral or helical p-wave pairings acquire peculiar forms wherein the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals develop $k_y$- and $k_x$-like pairings, respectively. Spin-orbit coupling $η$ induces a near-nodal gap of order $η^2/W^2 Δ_0$, where $Δ_0$ is the gap amplitude and $W$ roughly the bandwidth. Provided the aforementioned pairing is predominant, the near-nodal gap structure is robust upon the inclusion of other multi-orbital pairings that share the same symmetries. In light of the recent experimental progresses, our proposal suggests that two-dimensional p-wave pairings may still be viable candidate ground states for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. A near-nodal helical p-wave order, for example, would also be consistent with the substantial drop in the NMR Knight shift under an in-plane magnetic field.

Ergodic optimization theory for Axiom A flows

In this article, we consider the weighted ergodic optimization problem Axiom A attractors of a $C^2$ flow on a compact smooth manifold. The main result obtained in this paper is that for a generic observable from function space $\mc C^{0,\a}$ ($\a\in(0,1]$) or $\mc C^1$ the minimizing measure is unique and is supported on a periodic orbit.

Ergodic optimization theory for a class of typical maps

In this article, we consider the weighted ergodic optimization problem of a class of dynamical systems $T:X\to X$ where $X$ is a compact metric space and $T$ is Lipschitz continuous. We show that once $T:X\to X$ satisfies both the {\em Anosov shadowing property }({\bf ASP}) and the {\em Mañé-Conze-Guivarc'h-Bousch property }({\bf MCGBP}), the minimizing measures of generic Hölder observables are unique and supported on a periodic orbit. Moreover, if $T:X\to X$ is a subsystem of a dynamical system $f:M\to M$ (i.e. $X\subset M$ and $f|_X=T$) where $M$ is a compact smooth manifold, the above conclusion holds for $C^1$ observables. Note that a broad class of classical dynamical systems satisfies both ASP and MCGBP, which includes {\em Axiom A attractors, Anosov diffeomorphisms }and {\em uniformly expanding maps}. Therefore, the open problem proposed by Yuan and Hunt in \cite{YH} for $C^1$-observables is solved consequentially.

Reducing the Sarnak Conjecture to Toeplitz systems

In this paper, we show that for any sequence ${\bf a}=(a_n)_{n\in \Z}\in \{1,\ldots,k\}^\mathbb{Z}$ and any $ε>0$, there exists a Toeplitz sequence ${\bf b}=(b_n)_{n\in \Z}\in \{1,\ldots,k\}^\mathbb{Z}$ such that the entropy $h({\bf b})\leq 2 h({\bf a})$ and $\lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{2N+1}\sum_{n=-N}^N|a_n-b_n|<ε$. As an application of this result, we reduce Sarnak Conjecture to Toeplitz systems, that is, if the Möbius function is disjoint from any Toeplitz sequence with zero entropy, then the Sarnak conjecture holds.

Bounded complexity, mean equicontinuity and discrete spectrum

We study dynamical systems which have bounded complexity with respect to three kinds metrics: the Bowen metric $d_n$, the max-mean metric $\hat{d}_n$ and the mean metric $\bar{d}_n$, both in topological dynamics and ergodic theory. It is shown that a topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ has bounded complexity with respect to $d_n$ (resp. $\hat{d}_n$) if and only if it is equicontinuous (resp. equicontinuous in the mean). However, we construct minimal systems which have bounded complexity with respect to $\bar{d}_n$ but not equicontinuous in the mean. It turns out that an invariant measure $μ$ on $(X,T)$ has bounded complexity with respect to $d_n$ if and only if $(X,T)$ is $μ$-equicontinuous. Meanwhile, it is shown that $μ$ has bounded complexity with respect to $\hat{d}_n$ if and only if $μ$ has bounded complexity with respect to $\bar{d}_n$ if and only if $(X,T)$ is $μ$-mean equicontinuous if and only if it has discrete spectrum.

Möbius disjointness for skew products on a circle and a nilmanifold

Let $\mathbb{T}$ be the unit circle and $Γ\backslash G$ the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg nilmanifold. We prove that a class of skew products on $\mathbb{T} \times Γ\backslash G$ are distal, and that the Möbius function is linearly disjoint from these skew products. This verifies the Möbius Disjointness Conjecture of Sarnak.

Possible 3D nematic odd-parity pairing in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: experimental evidences and predictions

Due to the presence of a nontrivial three-dimensional spin-orbital entanglement, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ may be a time-reversal invariant nematic $p$-wave superconductor with coexisting in-plane and out-of-plane pairings. Here we discuss various signatures of such a state if the out-of-plane pairing component is dominant. First, the enhancement of the superconducting $T_c$ under in-plane uniaxial strains is nearly a quadratic function of the strain, because the out-of-plane pairing lacks a linear-order coupling to the strain. Second, when the strain applies along a certain in-plane direction, the nematic $p$-wave pairing exhibits only a single phase transition as the temperature is lowered. These are consistent with several recent uniaxial strain measurements, which are otherwise hard to reconcile with chiral $p$-wave order. We further show that the nematic $p$-wave state can be distinguished from the chiral $p$-wave state through the velocity jumps of certain sound waves at the onset of superconductivity. Possible implications for $μ$SR experiment under strain and NMR Knight shift measurement are also discussed.

Rate-Optimal Denoising with Deep Neural Networks

Deep neural networks provide state-of-the-art performance for image denoising, where the goal is to recover a near noise-free image from a noisy observation. The underlying principle is that neural networks trained on large datasets have empirically been shown to be able to generate natural images well from a low-dimensional latent representation of the image. Given such a generator network, a noisy image can be denoised by i) finding the closest image in the range of the generator or by ii) passing it through an encoder-generator architecture (known as an autoencoder). However, there is little theory to justify this success, let alone to predict the denoising performance as a function of the network parameters. In this paper we consider the problem of denoising an image from additive Gaussian noise using the two generator based approaches. In both cases, we assume the image is well described by a deep neural network with ReLU activations functions, mapping a $k$-dimensional code to an $n$-dimensional image. In the case of the autoencoder, we show that the feedforward network reduces noise energy by a factor of $O(k/n)$. In the case of optimizing over the range of a generative model, we state and analyze a simple gradient algorithm that minimizes a non-convex loss function, and provably reduces noise energy by a factor of $O(k/n)$. We also demonstrate in numerical experiments that this denoising performance is, indeed, achieved by generative priors learned from data.

Singlet $s^\pm$-wave pairing in quasi-one-dimensional ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) superconductors

The recent discovery of quasi-one-dimensional Chromium-based superconductivity has generated much excitement. We study in this work the superconducting instabilities of a representative compound, the newly synthesized KCr$_3$As$_3$ superconductor. Based on inputs from density functional theory calculations, we first construct an effective multi-orbital tight-binding Hamiltonian to model its low-energy band structure. We then employ standard random-phase approximation calculations to investigate the superconducting instabilities of the resultant multi-orbital Hubbard model. We find various pairing symmetries in the phase diagram in different interaction parameter regimes, including the triplet $f$-wave, $p_z$-wave and singlet $s^\pm$-wave pairings. We argue that the singlet $s^\pm$-wave pairing, which emerges at intermediate interaction strength, is realized in this material. This singlet pairing is driven by spin-density wave fluctuations enhanced by Fermi-surface nesting. We point out that phase-sensitive measurement can distinguish the $s$-wave pairing in KCr$_3$As$_3$ from the $p_z$-wave previously proposed for a related compound K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. The $s^{\pm}$-wave pairing in KCr$_3$As$_3$ shall also exhibit a subgap spin resonance mode near the nesting vector, which can be tested by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Another intriguing property of the $s^\pm$-pairing is that it can induce time-reversal invariant topological superconductivity in a semiconductor wire with large Rashba spin-orbit coupling via proximity effect. Our study shall be of general relevance to all superconductors in the family of ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A=K, Rb, Cs).

An answer to Furstenberg's problem on topological disjointness

In this paper we give an answer to Furstenberg's problem on topological disjointness. Namely, we show that a transitive system $(X,T)$ is disjoint from all minimal systems if and only if $(X,T)$ is weakly mixing and there is some countable dense subset $D$ of $X$ such that for any minimal system $(Y,S)$, any point $y\in Y$ and any open neighbourhood $V$ of $y$, and for any nonempty open subset $U\subset X$, there is $x\in D\cap U$ satisfying that $\{n\in{ \mathbb Z}_+: T^nx\in U, S^ny\in V\}$ is syndetic. Some characterization for the general case is also described. As applications we show that if a transitive system $(X,T)$ is disjoint from all minimal systems, then so are $(X^n,T^{(n)})$ and $(X, T^n)$ for any $n\in { \mathbb N}$. It turns out that a transitive system $(X,T)$ is disjoint from all minimal systems if and only if the hyperspace system $(K(X),T_K)$ is disjoint from all minimal systems.

Higher-order topological superconductivity: possible realization in Fermi gases and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

We propose to realize second-order topological superconductivity in bilayer spin-polarized Fermi gas superfluids. We focus on systems with intralayer chiral $p$-wave pairing and with tunable interlayer hopping and interlayer interactions. Under appropriate circumstances, an interlayer even-parity $s$- or $d$-wave pairing may coexist with the intralayer $p$-wave. Our model supports localized Majorana zero modes not only at the corners of the system geometry, but also at the terminations of certain one-dimensional defects, such as lattice line defects and superfluid domain walls. We show how such topological phases and the Majorana zero modes therein can be manipulated in a multitude of ways by tuning the interlayer pairing and hopping. Generalized to spinful systems, we further propose that the putative $p$-wave superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, when subject to uniaxial strains, may also realize the desired topological phase.

A Provably Convergent Scheme for Compressive Sensing under Random Generative Priors

Deep generative modeling has led to new and state of the art approaches for enforcing structural priors in a variety of inverse problems. In contrast to priors given by sparsity, deep models can provide direct low-dimensional parameterizations of the manifold of images or signals belonging to a particular natural class, allowing for recovery algorithms to be posed in a low-dimensional space. This dimensionality may even be lower than the sparsity level of the same signals when viewed in a fixed basis. What is not known about these methods is whether there are computationally efficient algorithms whose sample complexity is optimal in the dimensionality of the representation given by the generative model. In this paper, we present such an algorithm and analysis. Under the assumption that the generative model is a neural network that is sufficiently expansive at each layer and has Gaussian weights, we provide a gradient descent scheme and prove that for noisy compressive measurements of a signal in the range of the model, the algorithm converges to that signal, up to the noise level. The scaling of the sample complexity with respect to the input dimensionality of the generative prior is linear, and thus can not be improved except for constants and factors of other variables. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first recovery guarantee for compressive sensing under generative priors by a computationally efficient algorithm.

Possible three-dimensional nematic odd-parity superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The superconducting pairing in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is widely considered to be chiral $p$-wave with $\vec{d}_{\boldsymbol k} \sim (k_x + ik_y)\hat{z}$, which belongs to the $E_u$ representation of the crystalline $D_{4h}$ group. However, this superconducting order appears hard to reconcile with a number of key experiments. In this paper, based on symmetry analysis we discuss the possibility of odd-parity pairing with inherent three-dimensional (3D) character enforced by the inter-orbital interlayer coupling and the sizable spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the material. We focus on a yet unexplored $E_u$ pairing, which contains finite $(k_z \hat x$, $k_z \hat y)$-component in the gap function. Under appropriate circumstances a novel time-reversal invariant nematic pairing can be realized. This nematic superconducting state could make contact with some puzzling observations on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, such as the absence of spontaneous edge current and no evidences of split transitions under uniaxial strains.
