High-resolution spectroscopy of single nuclear spins via sequential weak measurements

Quantum sensors have recently achieved to detect the magnetic moment of few or single nuclear spins and measure their magnetic resonance (NMR) signal. However, the spectral resolution, a key feature of NMR, has been limited by relaxation of the sensor to a few kHz at room temperature. The spectral resolution of NMR signals from single nuclear spins can be improved by, e.g., using quantum memories, however at the expense of sensitivity. Classical signals on the other hand can be measured with exceptional spectral resolution by using continuous measurement techniques, without compromising sensitivity. To apply these techniques to single-spin NMR, it is critical to overcome the impact of back action inherent of quantum measurements. Here we report sequential weak measurements on a single $^{13}$C nuclear spin. The back-action of repetitive weak measurements causes the spin to undergo a quantum dynamics phase transition from coherent trapping to coherent oscillation. Single-spin NMR at room-temperature with a spectral resolution of 3.8 Hz is achieved. These results enable the use of measurement-correlation schemes for the detection of very weakly coupled single spins.

Improving spin-based noise sensing by adaptive measurements

Localized spins in the solid state are attracting widespread attention as highly sensitive quantum sensors with nanoscale spatial resolution and fascinating applications. Recently, adaptive measurements were used to improve the dynamic range for spin-based sensing of deterministic Hamiltonian parameters. Here we explore a very different direction -- spin-based adaptive sensing of random noises. First, we identify distinguishing features for the sensing of magnetic noises compared with the estimation of deterministic magnetic fields, such as the different dependences on the spin decoherence, the different optimal measurement schemes, the absence of the modulo-2πphase ambiguity, and the crucial role of adaptive measurement. Second, we perform numerical simulations that demonstrate significant speed up of the characterization of the spin decoherence time via adaptive measurements. This paves the way towards adaptive noise sensing and coherence protection.

Existence of bubbling solutions without mass concentration

The seminal work \cite{bm} by Brezis and Merle has been pioneering in studying the bubbling phenomena of the mean field equation with singular sources. When the vortex points are not collapsing, the mean field equation possesses the property of the so-called "bubbling implies mass concentration". Recently, Lin and Tarantello in \cite{lt} pointed out that the "bubbling implies mass concentration" phenomena might not hold in general if the collapse of singularities occurs. In this paper, we shall construct the first concrete example of non-concentrated bubbling solution of the mean field equation with collapsing singularities.

Quantum sensing enhanced by adaptive periodic quantum control

Using a single quantum probe to sense other quantum objects offers distinct advantages but suffers from some limitations that may degrade the sensing precision severely, especially when the probe-target coupling is weak. Here we propose a strategy to improve the sensing precision by using the quantum probe to engineer the evolution of the target. We consider an exactly solvable model, in which a qubit is used as the probe to sense the frequency of a harmonic oscillator. We show that by applying adaptive periodic quantum control on the qubit, the sensing precision can be enhanced from 1/T scaling with the total time cost T to 1/T^{2} scaling, thus improving the precision by several orders of magnitudes. Such improvement can be achieved without any direct access to the oscillator and the improvement increases with decreasing probe-target coupling. This provides a useful routine to ultrasensitive quantum sensing of weakly coupled quantum objects.

Oblique Klein tunneling in 8-Pmmn borophene p-n junctions

The 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene is one kind of new elemental monolayer, which hosts anisotropic and tilted massless Dirac fermions (MDF). The planar \textit{p-n} junction (PNJ) structure as the basic component of various novel devices based on the monolayer material has attracted increasing attention. Here, we analytically study the transport properties of anisotropic and tilted MDF across 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene PNJ. Similar to the isotropic MDF across graphene junctions, perfect transmission exists but its direction departures the normal direction of borophene PNJ induced by the anisotropy and tilt, i.e., oblique Klein tunneling. The oblique Klein tunneling does not depend on the doping levels in \textit{N} and \textit{P} regions of PNJ as the normal Klein tunneling but depends on the junction direction. Furthermore, we analytically derive the special junction direction for the maximal difference between perfect transmission direction and the normal direction of PNJ and clearly distinguish the respective contribution of anisotropy and tilt underlying the oblique Klein tunneling. In light of the rapid advances of experimental technologies, we expect the oblique Klein tunneling to be observable in the near future.

Recent advances and opportunities in scene classification of aerial images with deep models

Scene classification is a fundamental task in interpretation of remote sensing images, and has become an active research topic in remote sensing community due to its important role in a wide range of applications. Over the past years, tremendous efforts have been made for developing powerful approaches for scene classification of remote sensing images, evolving from the traditional bag-of-visual-words model to the new generation deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The deep CNN based methods have exhibited remarkable breakthrough on performance, dramatically outperforming previous methods which strongly rely on hand-crafted features. However, performance with deep CNNs has gradually plateaued on existing public scene datasets, due to the notable drawbacks of these datasets, such as the small scale and low-diversity of training samples. Therefore, to promote the development of new methods and move the scene classification task a step further, we deeply discuss the existing problems in scene classification task, and accordingly present three open directions. We believe these potential directions will be instructive for the researchers in this field.

Veselago focusing of anisotropic massless Dirac fermions

Massless Dirac fermions (MDFs) emerge as quasiparticles in various novel materials such as graphene and topological insulators, and they exhibit several intriguing properties, of which Veselago focusing is an outstanding example with a lot of possible applications. However, up to now Veselago focusing merely occurred in p-n junction devices based on the isotropic MDF, which lacks the tunability needed for realistic applications. Here, motivated by the emergence of novel Dirac materials, we investigate the propagation behaviors of anisotropic MDFs in such a p-n junction structure. By projecting the Hamiltonian of the anisotropic MDF to that of the isotropic MDF and deriving an exact analytical expression for the propagator, precise Veselago focusing is demonstrated without the need for mirror symmetry of the electron source and its focusing image. We show a tunable focusing position that can be used in a device to probe masked atom-scale defects. This study provides an innovative concept to realize Veselago focusing relevant for potential applications, and it paves the way for the design of novel electron optics devices by exploiting the anisotropic MDF.

Uniqueness and convergence on equilibria of the Keller-Segel system with subcritical mass

This paper is concerned with the uniqueness of solutions to the following nonlocal semi-linear elliptic equation \begin{equation}\label{ellip}\tag{$\ast$} Δu-βu+λ\frac{e^u}{\int_Ωe^u}=0~\mathrm{in}~Ω, \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $β, λ$ are positive parameters. The above equation arises as the stationary problem of the well-known classical Keller-Segel model describing chemotaxis. For equation \eqref{ellip} with Neumann boundary condition, we establish an integral inequality and prove that the solution of (\ref{ellip}) is unique if $0<λ\leq 8π$ and $u$ satisfies some symmetric properties. While for \eqref{ellip} with Dirichlet boundary condition, the same uniqueness result is obtained without symmetric condition by a different approach inspired by some recent works [19,21]. As an application of the uniqueness results, we prove that the radially symmetric solution of the classical Keller-Segel system with subcritical mass subject to Neumann boundary conditions will converge to the unique constant equilibrium as time tends to infinity if $Ω$ is a disc in two dimensions. As far as we know, this is the first result that asserts the exact asymptotic behavior of solutions to the classical Keller-Segel system with subcritical mass in two dimensions.

Local uniqueness of $m$-bubbling sequences for the Gel'fand equation

We consider the Gel'fand problem, $$ \begin{cases} Δw_{\varepsilon}+\varepsilon^2 h e^{w_{\varepsilon}}=0\quad&\mbox{in}\quadΩ, w_{\varepsilon}=0\quad&\mbox{on}\quad\partialΩ, \end{cases} $$ where $h$ is a nonnegative function in ${Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2}$. Under suitable assumptions on $h$ and $Ω$, we prove the local uniqueness of $m-$bubbling solutions for any $\varepsilon>0$ small enough.

Wave equations associated to Liouville-type problems: global existence in time and blow up criteria

We are concerned with wave equations associated to some Liouville-type problems on compact surfaces, focusing on sinh-Gordon equation and general Toda systems. Our aim is on one side to develop the analysis for wave equations associated to the latter problems and second, to substantially refine the analysis initiated in [11] concerning the mean field equation. In particular, by exploiting the variational analysis recently derived for Liouville-type problems we prove global existence in time for the sub-critical case and we give general blow up criteria for the super-critical and critical case. The strategy is mainly based on fixed point arguments and improved versions of the Moser-Trudinger inequality.

Perfect transmission at oblique incidence by trigonal warping in graphene P-N junctions

We develop an analytical mode-matching technique for the tight-binding model to describe electron transport across graphene P-N junctions. This method shares the simplicity of the conventional mode-matching technique for the low-energy continuum model and the accuracy of the tight-binding model over a wide range of energies. It further reveals an interesting phenomenon on a sharp P-N junction: the disappearance of the well-known Klein tunneling (i.e., perfect transmission) at normal incidence and the appearance of perfect transmission at oblique incidence due to trigonal warping at energies beyond the linear Dirac regime. We show that this phenomenon arises from the conservation of a generalized pseudospin in the tight-binding model. We expect this effect to be experimentally observable in graphene and other Dirac fermions systems, such as the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators.

Non degeneracy, Mean Field Equations and the Onsager theory of 2D turbulence

The understanding of some large energy, negative specific heat states in the Onsager description of 2D turbulence, seems to require the analysis of a subtle open problem about bubbling solutions of the mean field equation. Motivated by this application we prove that, under suitable non degeneracy assumptions on the associated $m$-vortex Hamiltonian, the $m$-point bubbling solutions of the mean field equation are non degenerate as well. Then we deduce that the Onsager mean field equilibrium entropy is smooth and strictly convex in the high energy regime on domains of second kind.

Uniqueness of bubbling solutions of mean field equations

We prove uniqueness of blow up solutions of the mean field equation as $ρ_n \rightarrow 8πm$, $m\in\mathbb{N}$. If $u_{n,1}$ and $u_{n,2}$ are two sequences of bubbling solutions with the same $ρ_n$ and the same (non degenerate) blow up set, then $u_{n,1}=u_{n,2}$ for sufficiently large $n$. The proof of the uniqueness requires a careful use of some sharp estimates for bubbling solutions of mean field equations [24] and a rather involved analysis of suitably defined Pohozaev-type identities as recently developed in [51] in the context of the Chern-Simons-Higgs equations. Moreover, motivated by the Onsager statistical description of two dimensional turbulence, we are bound to obtain a refined version of an estimate about $ρ_n-8πm$ in case the first order evaluated in [24] vanishes.

Force-induced transparency and conversion between slow and fast lights in optomechanics

The optomechanics can generate fantastic effects of optics due to appropriate mechanical control. Here we theoretically study effects of slow and fast lights in a single-sided optomechanical cavity with an external force. The force-induced transparency of slow/fast light and the force-dependent conversion between the slow and fast lights are resulted from effects of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) and the anti-RWA, which can be controlled by properly modifying the effective cavity frequency due to the external force. These force-induced phenomena can be applied to control of the light group velocity and detection of the force variation, which are feasible using current laboratory techniques.

Focusing RKKY interaction by graphene P-N junction

The carrier-mediated RKKY interaction between local spins plays an important role for the application of magnetically doped graphene in spintronics and quantum computation. Previous studies largely concentrate on the influence of electronic states of uniform systems on the RKKY interaction. Here we reveal a very different way to manipulate the RKKY interaction by showing that the anomalous focusing - a well-known electron optics phenomenon in graphene P-N junctions - can be utilized to refocus the massless Dirac electrons emanating from one local spin to the other local spin. This gives rise to rich spatial interference patterns and symmetry-protected non-oscillatory RKKY interaction with a strongly enhanced magnitude. It may provide a new way to engineer the long-range spin-spin interaction in graphene.

Degree counting for Toda system with simple singularity : one point blow up

In this paper, we study the degree counting formula of the rank two Toda system with simple singular source when $ρ_1\in(0,4π)\cup(4π,8π)$ and $ρ_2\notin 4π\mathbb{N}.$ The key step is to derive the degree formula of the shadow system, which arises from the bubbling solutions as $ρ_1$ tends to $4π$. In order to compute the topological degree of the shadow system, we need to find some suitable deformation. During this deformation, we shall deal with \textit{new} difficulty arising from the new phenomena: blow up does not necessarily imply concentration of mass. This phenomena occurs due to the collapsing of singularities. This is a continuation of the previous work Lee, Lin, Wei and Yang.

Stable spike clusters for the precursor Gierer-Meinhardt system in R2

We consider the Gierer-Meinhardt system with small inhibitor diffusivity, very small activator diffusivity and a precursor inhomogeneity. For any given positive integer k we construct a spike cluster consisting of $k$ spikes which all approach the same nondegenerate local minimum point of the precursor inhomogeneity. We show that this spike cluster can be linearly stable. In particular, we show the existence of spike clusters for spikes located at the vertices of a polygon with or without centre. Further, the cluster without centre is stable for up to three spikes, whereas the cluster with centre is stable for up to six spikes. The main idea underpinning these stable spike clusters is the following: due to the small inhibitor diffusivity the interaction between spikes is repulsive, and the spikes are attracted towards the local minimum point of the precursor inhomogeneity. Combining these two effects can lead to an equilibrium of spike positions within the cluster such that the cluster is linearly stable.

Optimized spin-injection efficiency and spin MOSFET operation based on low-barrier ferromagnet/insulator/n-Si tunnel contact

We theoretically investigate the spin injection in different FM/I/n-Si tunnel contacts by using the lattice NEGF method. We find that the tunnel contacts with low barrier materials such as TiO$_2$ and Ta$_{2}$O$_{5}$, have much lower resistances than the conventional barrier materials, resulting in a wider and attainable optimum parameters window for improving the spin injection efficiency and MR ratio of a vertical spin MOSFET. Additionally, we find the spin asymmetry coefficient of TiO$_2$ tunnel contact has a negative value, while that of Ta$_{2}$O$_{5}$ contact can be tuned between positive and negative values, by changing the parameters.
