Near-Field MMSE Channel Estimation for THz RIS-aided Communications with Electromagnetic Interference

This letter investigates the channel estimation problem in THz wireless communications where a RIS is employed to assist wireless transmission between different devices. Unlike existing studies, we consider a novel scenario where specific devices are all located in the radiative NF region of the RIS. Meanwhile, we also account for the impact on channel estimation of the random electromagnetic interference occurring at the RIS location. A linear minimum mean-square error estimator is employed, where the estimation error is fully determined by the RIS configuration. Optimizing the RIS involves solving a non-convex problem, which is addressed using an alternating optimization approach based on the diagonally scaled gradient descent algorithm. Numerical results in the THz band highlight the importance of leveraging NF channel statistics over far-field approximations and demonstrate that the proposed estimator achieves substantial improvements in normalized mean-square error compared to existing methods.

Doppler Robust Vortex Wavefront Design for Integrated Sensing and Communication

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a promising paradigm for future wireless systems due to spectrum reuse, hardware sharing, and joint waveform design. In dynamic scenes, Doppler shifts degrade both sensing and communication, which is particularly critical for beam-sensitive orbital angular momentum (OAM) wavefronts. To address this, we propose a Doppler-robust ISAC framework, which first senses and then communicates. Specifically, in the sensing phase, multiple vortex modes are simultaneously transmitted via code-division mode-multiplexing (CDMM). To solve Doppler-induced inter-mode interference, we propose a velocity-consistency matching (VCM)-expectation maximization (EM) algorithm that jointly decodes the sensing matrix and estimates range, azimuth, elevation, and velocity for multiple moving targets. In the communication phase, the joint transmitter (Tx) beamforming and receiver (Rx) beam steering are configured from the estimated channel state information (CSI). We further quantify the sensing-communication allocation trade-off by evaluating how pilot length affects estimation accuracy, beam alignment, and spectral efficiency (SE). Simulation results show that the proposed VCM-EM and ISAC designs achieve higher sensing accuracy and communication SE than baseline schemes in dynamic scenarios.

Multibeam High Throughput Satellite: Hardware Foundation, Resource Allocation, and Precoding

With its wide coverage and uninterrupted service, satellite communication is a critical technology for next-generation 6G communications. High throughput satellite (HTS) systems, utilizing multipoint beam and frequency multiplexing techniques, enable satellite communication capacity of up to Tbps to meet the growing traffic demand. Therefore, it is imperative to review the-state-of-the-art of multibeam HTS systems and identify their associated challenges and perspectives. Firstly, we summarize the multibeam HTS hardware foundations, including ground station systems, on-board payloads, and user terminals. Subsequently, we review the flexible on-board radio resource allocation approaches of bandwidth, power, time slot, and joint allocation schemes of HTS systems to optimize resource utilization and cater to non-uniform service demand. Additionally, we survey multibeam precoding methods for the HTS system to achieve full-frequency reuse and interference cancellation, which are classified according to different deployments such as single gateway precoding, multiple gateway precoding, on-board precoding, and hybrid on-board/on-ground precoding. Finally, we disscuss the challenges related to Q/V band link outage, time and frequency synchronization of gateways, the accuracy of channel state information (CSI), payload light-weight development, and the application of deep learning (DL). Research on these topics will contribute to enhancing the performance of HTS systems and finally delivering high-speed data to areas underserved by terrestrial networks.

Channel Estimation for 6G Near-Field Wireless Communications: A Comprehensive Survey

The sixth-generation (6G) wireless systems are expected to adopt extremely large aperture arrays (ELAAs), novel antenna architectures, and operate in extremely high-frequency bands to meet growing data demands. ELAAs significantly increase the number of antennas, enabling finer spatial resolution and improved beamforming. At high frequencies, ELAAs shift communication from the conventional far-field to near-field regime, where spherical wavefronts dominate and the channel response depends on both angle and distance, increasing channel dimensionality. Conventional far-field channel estimation methods, which rely on angular information, struggle in near-field scenarios due to increased pilot overhead and computational complexity. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of recent advances in near-field channel estimation. It first defines the near- and far-field boundary from an electromagnetic perspective and discusses key propagation differences, alongside a brief review of ELAA developments. Then, it introduces mainstream near-field channel models and compares them with far-field models. Major estimation techniques are reviewed under different configurations (single/multi-user, single/multi-carrier), including both direct estimation and RIS-assisted cascaded estimation. These techniques reveal trade-offs among estimation accuracy, complexity, and overhead. This survey aims to provide insights and foundations for efficient and scalable near-field channel estimation in 6G systems, while identifying key challenges and future research directions.

Parametric Near-Field MMSE Channel Estimation for sub-THz XL-MIMO Systems

Accurate channel estimation is essential for reliable communication in sub-THz extremely large (XL) MIMO systems. Deploying XL-MIMO in high-frequency bands not only increases the number of antennas, but also fundamentally alters channel propagation characteristics, placing the user equipments (UE) in the radiative near-field of the base station. This paper proposes a parametric estimation method using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm to extract UE location data from uplink pilot signals. These parameters are used to reconstruct the spatial correlation matrix, followed by an approximation of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimator. Numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms the least-squares (LS) estimator in terms of the normalized mean-square error (NMSE), even without prior UE location knowledge.

MMSE Design of RIS-aided Communications

Consider a communication system in which a single antenna user equipment exchanges information with a multi-antenna base station via a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the presence of spatially correlated channels and electromagnetic interference (EMI). To exploit the attractive advantages of RIS technology, accurate configuration of its reflecting elements is crucial. In this paper, we use statistical knowledge of channels and EMI to optimize the RIS elements for i) accurate channel estimation and ii) reliable data transmission. In both cases, our goal is to determine the RIS coefficients that minimize the mean square error, resulting in the formulation of two non-convex problems that share the same structure. To solve these two problems, we present an alternating optimization approach that reliably converges to a locally optimal solution. The incorporation of the diagonally scaled steepest descent algorithm, derived from Newton's method, ensures fast convergence with manageable complexity. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method under various propagation conditions. Notably, it shows significant advantages over existing alternatives that depend on a sub-optimal configuration of the RIS and are derived on the basis of different criteria.

Hybrid Mechanical and Electronic Beam Steering for Maximizing OAM Channel Capacity

Radio frequency-orbital angular momentum (RF-OAM) is a novel approach of multiplexing a set of orthogonal modes on the same frequency channel to achieve high spectrum efficiencies. Since OAM requires precise alignment of the transmit and the receive antennas, the electronic beam steering approach has been proposed for the uniform circular array (UCA)-based OAM communication system to circumvent large performance degradation induced by small antenna misalignment in practical environment. However, in the case of large-angle misalignment, the OAM channel capacity can not be effectively compensated only by the electronic beam steering. To solve this problem, we propose a hybrid mechanical and electronic beam steering scheme, in which mechanical rotating devices controlled by pulse width modulation (PWM) signals as the execution unit are utilized to eliminate the large misalignment angle, while electronic beam steering is in charge of the remaining small misalignment angle caused by perturbations. Furthermore, due to the interferometry, the receive signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) are not uniform at the elements of the receive UCA. Therefore, a rotatable UCA structure is proposed for the OAM receiver to maximize the channel capacity, in which the simulated annealing algorithm is adopted to obtain the optimal rotation angle at first, then the servo system performs mechanical rotation, at last the electronic beam steering is adjusted accordingly. Both mathematical analysis and simulation results validate that the proposed hybrid mechanical and electronic beam steering scheme can effectively eliminate the effect of diverse misalignment errors of any practical OAM channel and maximize the OAM channel capacity.

Joint OAM Radar-Communication Systems: Target Recognition and Beam Optimization

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) radars are able to estimate the azimuth angle and the rotation velocity of multiple targets without relative motion or beam scanning. Moreover, OAM wireless communications can achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) by utilizing a set of information-bearing modes on the same frequency channel. Benefitting from the above advantages, in this paper, we design a novel radar-centric joint OAM radar-communication (RadCom) scheme based on uniform circular arrays (UCAs), which modulates information signals on the existing OAM radar waveform. In details, we first propose an OAM-based three-dimensional (3-D) super-resolution position estimation and rotation velocity detection method, which can accurately estimate the 3-D position and rotation velocity of multiple targets. Then, we derive the posterior Cramer-Rao bound (PCRB) of the OAM-based estimates and, finally, we analyze the transmission rate of the integrated communication system. To achieve the best trade-off between imaging and communication, the transmitted integrated OAM beams are optimized by means of an exhaustive search method. Both mathematical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed radar-centric joint OAM RadCom scheme can accurately estimate the 3-D position and rotation velocity of multiple targets while ensuring the transmission rate of the communication receiver, which can be regarded as an effective supplement to existing joint RadCom schemes.

Broadband beam steering for misaligned multi-mode OAM communication systems

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) at radio frequency (RF) has attracted more and more attention as a novel approach of multiplexing a set of orthogonal OAM modes on the same frequency channel to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE). However, the precondition for maintaining the orthogonality among different OAM modes is perfect alignment of the transmit and receive uniform circular arrays (UCAs), which is difficult to be satisfied in practical wireless communication scenario. Therefore, to achieve available multi-mode OAM broadband wireless communication, we first investigate the effect of oblique angles on the transmission performance of the multi-mode OAM broadband system in the non-parallel misalignment case. Then, we compare the UCA-based RF analog and baseband digital transceiver structures and corresponding beam steering schemes. Mathematical analysis and numerical simulations validate that the SE of the misaligned multi-mode OAM broadband system is quite low, while analog and digital beam steering both can significantly improve the SE of the system. However, digital beam steering can obtain higher SE than analog beam steering especially when the bandwidth and the number of array elements are large, which validates that baseband digital transceiver with digital beam steering is more suitable for multi-mode OAM broadband wireless communication systems in practice.

Radio-Frequency Multi-Mode OAM Detection Based on UCA Samples Learning

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) at radio-frequency provides a novel approach of multiplexing a set of orthogonal modes on the same frequency channel to achieve high spectral efficiencies. However, classical phase gradient-based OAM mode detection methods require perfect alignment of transmit and receive antennas, which greatly challenges the practical application of OAM communications. In this paper, we first show the effect of non-parallel misalignment on the OAM phase structure, and then propose the OAM mode detection method based on uniform circular array (UCA) samples learning for the more general alignment or non-parallel misalignment case. Specifically, we applied three classifiers: K-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), and back-propagation neural network (BPNN) to both single-mode and multi-mode OAM detection. The simulation results validate that the proposed learning-based OAM mode detection methods are robust to misalignment errors and especially BPNN classifier has the best generalization performance.

AoA Estimation for OAM Communication Systems With Mode-Frequency Multi-Time ESPRIT Method

Radio orbital angular momentum (OAM) communications require accurate alignment between the transmit and receive beam directions. Accordingly, a key feature of OAM receivers is the ability to reliably estimate the angle of arrival (AoA) of multi-mode OAM beams. Considering the limitations of existing AoA estimation techniques, in this paper, we propose an easier-to-implement AoA estimation method based on applying multiple times the estimating signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm to the received training signals in OAM mode and frequency domains, which is denoted as the mode-frequency (M-F) multi-time (MT)-ESPRIT algorithm. With this method, the misalignment error of real OAM channels can be greatly reduced and the performance approaches that of ideally aligned OAM channels.

The next 6G wireless communication networks are the key to achieve this grand blueprint, which is expected to connect everything, provide full dimensional wireless coverage and integrate all functions to support full-vertical applications. Recent research reveals that intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) with wireless environment control capability is a promising technology for 6G networks. Specifically, IRS can intelligently control the wavefront, e.g., the phase, amplitude, frequency, and even polarization by massive tunable elements, thus achieving fine-grained 3-D passive beamforming. Joint Spatial Division and Coaxial Multiplexing for Downlink Multi-User OAM Wireless Backhaul

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) at radio frequency (RF) provides a novel approach of multiplexing a set of orthogonal modes on the same frequency channel to achieve high spectral efficiencies (SEs). However, the existing research on OAM wireless communications is mainly focused on pointto-point transmission in the line-of-sight (LoS) scenario. In this paper, we propose an overall scheme of the downlink multi-user OAM (MU-OAM) wireless backhaul based on uniform circular arrays (UCAs) for broadcasting networks, which can achieve the joint spatial division and coaxial multiplexing (JSDCM). A salient feature of the proposed downlink MU-OAM wireless backhaul systems is that the channel matrices are completely characterized by the position of each small base station (SBS), independent of the numbers of subcarriers and antennas, which avoids estimating large channel matrices required by the traditional downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) wireless backhaul systems. Thereafter, we propose an OAM-based multiuser distance and angle of arrival (AoA) estimation method, which is able to simultaneously estimate the positions of multiple SBSs with a flexible number of training symbols. With the estimated distances and AoAs, a MU-OAM preprocessing scheme is applied to eliminate the co-mode and inter-mode interferences in the downlink MU-OAM channel. At last, the proposed methods are extended to the downlink MU-OAM-MIMO wireless backhaul system equipped with uniform concentric circular arrays (UCCAs), for which much higher spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) than traditional MU-MIMO systems can be achieved. Both mathematical analysis and simulation results validate that the proposed scheme can effectively eliminate both interferences of the practical downlink MU-OAM channel and approaches the performance of the ideal MU-OAM channel.

Multi-mode OAM Radio Waves: Generation, Angle of Arrival Estimation and Reception With UCAs

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) at radio frequency (RF) provides a novel approach of multiplexing a set of orthogonal modes on the same frequency channel to achieve high spectrum efficiencies. However, there are still big challenges in the multi-mode OAM generation, OAM antenna alignment and OAM signal reception. To solve these problems, we propose an overall scheme of the line-of-sight multi-carrier and multi-mode OAM (LoS MCMM-OAM) communication based on uniform circular arrays (UCAs). First, we verify that UCA can generate multi-mode OAM radio beam with both the RF analog synthesis method and the baseband digital synthesis method. Then, for the considered UCA-based LoS MCMM-OAM communication system, a distance and AoA estimation method is proposed based on the two-dimensional ESPRIT (2-D ESPRIT) algorithm. A salient feature of the proposed LoS MCMM-OAM and LoS MCMM-OAM-MIMO systems is that the channel matrices are completely characterized by three parameters, namely, the azimuth angle, the elevation angle and the distance, independent of the numbers of subcarriers and antennas, which significantly reduces the burden by avoiding estimating large channel matrices, as traditional MIMO-OFDM systems. After that, we propose an OAM reception scheme including the beam steering with the estimated AoA and the amplitude detection with the estimated distance. At last, the proposed methods are extended to the LoS MCMM-OAM-MIMO system equipped with uniform concentric circular arrays (UCCAs). Both mathematical analysis and simulation results validate that the proposed OAM reception scheme can eliminate the effect of the misalignment error of a practical OAM channel and approaches the performance of an ideally aligned OAM channel.
