Incremental Mining of Frequent Serial Episodes Considering Multiple Occurrences

The need to analyze information from streams arises in a variety of applications. One of its fundamental research directions is to mine sequential patterns over data streams. Current studies mine series of items based on the presence of the pattern in transactions but pay no attention to the series of itemsets and their multiple occurrences. The pattern over a window of itemsets stream and their multiple occurrences, however, provides additional capability to recognize the essential characteristics of the patterns and the inter-relationships among them that are unidentifiable by the existing presence-based studies. In this paper, we study such a new sequential pattern mining problem and propose a corresponding sequential miner with novel strategies to prune the search space efficiently. Experiments on both real and synthetic data show the utility of our approach.

Longitudinal Fairness with Censorship

Recent works in artificial intelligence fairness attempt to mitigate discrimination by proposing constrained optimization programs that achieve parity for some fairness statistic. Most assume availability of the class label, which is impractical in many real-world applications such as precision medicine, actuarial analysis and recidivism prediction. Here we consider fairness in longitudinal right-censored environments, where the time to event might be unknown, resulting in censorship of the class label and inapplicability of existing fairness studies. We devise applicable fairness measures, propose a debiasing algorithm, and provide necessary theoretical constructs to bridge fairness with and without censorship for these important and socially-sensitive tasks. Our experiments on four censored datasets confirm the utility of our approach.

Femtosecond rotational dynamics of D$_2$ molecules in superfluid helium nanodroplets

Rotational dynamics of D$_2$ molecules inside helium nanodroplets is induced by a moderately intense femtosecond (fs) pump pulse and measured as a function of time by recording the yield of HeD$^+$ ions, created through strong-field dissociative ionization with a delayed fs probe pulse. The yield oscillates with a period of 185 fs, reflecting field-free rotational wave packet dynamics, and the oscillation persists for more than 500 periods. Within the experimental uncertainty, the rotational constant BHe of the in-droplet D$_2$ molecule, determined by Fourier analysis, is the same as Bgas for an isolated D$_2$ molecule. Our observations show that the D$_2$ molecules inside helium nanodroplets essentially rotate as free D$_2$ molecules.

A survey on datasets for fairness-aware machine learning

As decision-making increasingly relies on Machine Learning (ML) and (big) data, the issue of fairness in data-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems is receiving increasing attention from both research and industry. A large variety of fairness-aware machine learning solutions have been proposed which involve fairness-related interventions in the data, learning algorithms and/or model outputs. However, a vital part of proposing new approaches is evaluating them empirically on benchmark datasets that represent realistic and diverse settings. Therefore, in this paper, we overview real-world datasets used for fairness-aware machine learning. We focus on tabular data as the most common data representation for fairness-aware machine learning. We start our analysis by identifying relationships between the different attributes, particularly w.r.t. protected attributes and class attribute, using a Bayesian network. For a deeper understanding of bias in the datasets, we investigate the interesting relationships using exploratory analysis.

LSTM Based Sentiment Analysis for Cryptocurrency Prediction

Recent studies in big data analytics and natural language processing develop automatic techniques in analyzing sentiment in the social media information. In addition, the growing user base of social media and the high volume of posts also provide valuable sentiment information to predict the price fluctuation of the cryptocurrency. This research is directed to predicting the volatile price movement of cryptocurrency by analyzing the sentiment in social media and finding the correlation between them. While previous work has been developed to analyze sentiment in English social media posts, we propose a method to identify the sentiment of the Chinese social media posts from the most popular Chinese social media platform Sina-Weibo. We develop the pipeline to capture Weibo posts, describe the creation of the crypto-specific sentiment dictionary, and propose a long short-term memory (LSTM) based recurrent neural network along with the historical cryptocurrency price movement to predict the price trend for future time frames. The conducted experiments demonstrate the proposed approach outperforms the state of the art auto regressive based model by 18.5% in precision and 15.4% in recall.

FARF: A Fair and Adaptive Random Forests Classifier

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in more applications, the need to consider and mitigate biases from the learned models has followed. Most works in developing fair learning algorithms focus on the offline setting. However, in many real-world applications data comes in an online fashion and needs to be processed on the fly. Moreover, in practical application, there is a trade-off between accuracy and fairness that needs to be accounted for, but current methods often have multiple hyperparameters with non-trivial interaction to achieve fairness. In this paper, we propose a flexible ensemble algorithm for fair decision-making in the more challenging context of evolving online settings. This algorithm, called FARF (Fair and Adaptive Random Forests), is based on using online component classifiers and updating them according to the current distribution, that also accounts for fairness and a single hyperparameters that alters fairness-accuracy balance. Experiments on real-world discriminated data streams demonstrate the utility of FARF.

Online Fairness-Aware Learning with Imbalanced Data Streams

Data-driven learning algorithms are employed in many online applications, in which data become available over time, like network monitoring, stock price prediction, job applications, etc. The underlying data distribution might evolve over time calling for model adaptation as new instances arrive and old instances become obsolete. In such dynamic environments, the so-called data streams, fairness-aware learning cannot be considered as a one-off requirement, but rather it should comprise a continual requirement over the stream. Recent fairness-aware stream classifiers ignore the problem of class imbalance, which manifests in many real-life applications, and mitigate discrimination mainly because they "reject" minority instances at large due to their inability to effectively learn all classes. In this work, we propose \ours, an online fairness-aware approach that maintains a valid and fair classifier over the stream. \ours~is an online boosting approach that changes the training distribution in an online fashion by monitoring stream's class imbalance and tweaks its decision boundary to mitigate discriminatory outcomes over the stream. Experiments on 8 real-world and 1 synthetic datasets from different domains with varying class imbalance demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art fairness-aware stream approaches with a range (relative) increase [11.2\%-14.2\%] in balanced accuracy, [22.6\%-31.8\%] in gmean, [42.5\%-49.6\%] in recall, [14.3\%-25.7\%] in kappa and [89.4\%-96.6\%] in statistical parity (fairness).

Complex Spectral Mapping With Attention Based Convolution Recurrent Neural Network for Speech Enhancement

Speech enhancement has benefited from the success of deep learning in terms of intelligibility and perceptual quality. Conventional time-frequency (TF) domain methods focus on predicting TF-masks or speech spectrum, via a naive convolution neural network or recurrent neural network. Some recent studies were based on Complex spectral Mapping convolution recurrent neural network (CRN) . These models skiped directly from encoder layers' output and decoder layers' input ,which maybe thoughtless. We proposed an attention mechanism based skip connection between encoder and decoder layers, namely Complex Spectral Mapping With Attention Based Convolution Recurrent Neural Network (CARN).Compared with CRN model, the proposed CARN model improved more than 10% relatively at several metrics such as PESQ,CBAK,COVL,CSIG and son,and outperformed the place 1st model in both real time and non-real time track of the DNS Challenge 2020 at these metrics.

Using Machine Learning to Automate Mammogram Images Analysis

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death after lung cancer in women. Early detection of breast cancer in X-ray mammography is believed to have effectively reduced the mortality rate. However, a relatively high false positive rate and a low specificity in mammography technology still exist. In this work, a computer-aided automatic mammogram analysis system is proposed to process the mammogram images and automatically discriminate them as either normal or cancerous, consisting of three consecutive image processing, feature selection, and image classification stages. In designing the system, the discrete wavelet transforms (Daubechies 2, Daubechies 4, and Biorthogonal 6.8) and the Fourier cosine transform were first used to parse the mammogram images and extract statistical features. Then, an entropy-based feature selection method was implemented to reduce the number of features. Finally, different pattern recognition methods (including the Back-propagation Network, the Linear Discriminant Analysis, and the Naive Bayes Classifier) and a voting classification scheme were employed. The performance of each classification strategy was evaluated for sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy and for general performance using the Receiver Operating Curve. Our method is validated on the dataset from the Eastern Health in Newfoundland and Labrador of Canada. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed automatic mammogram analysis system could effectively improve the classification performances.

Disentangled Dynamic Graph Deep Generation

Deep generative models for graphs have exhibited promising performance in ever-increasing domains such as design of molecules (i.e, graph of atoms) and structure prediction of proteins (i.e., graph of amino acids). Existing work typically focuses on static rather than dynamic graphs, which are actually very important in the applications such as protein folding, molecule reactions, and human mobility. Extending existing deep generative models from static to dynamic graphs is a challenging task, which requires to handle the factorization of static and dynamic characteristics as well as mutual interactions among node and edge patterns. Here, this paper proposes a novel framework of factorized deep generative models to achieve interpretable dynamic graph generation. Various generative models are proposed to characterize conditional independence among node, edge, static, and dynamic factors. Then, variational optimization strategies as well as dynamic graph decoders are proposed based on newly designed factorized variational autoencoders and recurrent graph deconvolutions. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models.

A Data-driven Human Responsibility Management System

An ideal safe workplace is described as a place where staffs fulfill responsibilities in a well-organized order, potential hazardous events are being monitored in real-time, as well as the number of accidents and relevant damages are minimized. However, occupational-related death and injury are still increasing and have been highly attended in the last decades due to the lack of comprehensive safety management. A smart safety management system is therefore urgently needed, in which the staffs are instructed to fulfill responsibilities as well as automating risk evaluations and alerting staffs and departments when needed. In this paper, a smart system for safety management in the workplace based on responsibility big data analysis and the internet of things (IoT) are proposed. The real world implementation and assessment demonstrate that the proposed systems have superior accountability performance and improve the responsibility fulfillment through real-time supervision and self-reminder.

In this paper, we present an open-source multi-resolution and multi-physics library: SPHinXsys (pronunciation: s'finksis) which is an acronym for \underline{S}moothed \underline{P}article \underline{H}ydrodynamics (SPH) for \underline{in}dustrial comple\underline{X} \underline{sys}tems. As an open-source library, SPHinXsys is developed and released under the terms of Apache License (2.0). Along with the source code, a complete documentation is also distributed to make the compilation and execution easy. SPHinXsys aims at modeling coupled multi-physics industrial dynamic systems including fluids, solids, multi-body dynamics and beyond, in a multi-resolution unified SPH framework. As an SPH solver, SPHinXsys has many advantages namely, (1) the generic design provides a C++ API showing a very good flexibility when building domain-specific applications, (2) numerous industrial or scientific applications can be coupled within the same framework and (3) with the open-source philosophy, the community of users can collaborate and improve the library. SPHinXsys presently (v0.2.0) includes validations and applications in the fields of fluid dynamics, solid dynamics, thermal and mass diffusion, reaction-diffusion, electromechanics and fluid-structure interactions (FSI).

Echo in a Single Molecule

Echo is a ubiquitous phenomenon found in many physical systems, ranging from spins in magnetic fields to particle beams in hadron accelerators. It is typically observed in inhomogeneously broadened ensembles of nonlinear objects, and is used to eliminate the effects of environmental-induced dephasing, enabling observation of proper, inherent object properties. Here, we report experimental observation of quantum wave packet echoes in a single isolated molecule. In contrast to conventional echoes, here the entire dephasing-rephasing cycle occurs within a single molecule without any inhomogeneous spread of molecular properties, or any interaction with the environment. In our experiments, we use a short laser pulse to impulsively excite a vibrational wave packet in an anharmonic molecular potential, and observe its oscillations and eventual dispersion with time. A second delayed pulsed excitation is applied, giving rise to an echo: a partial recovery of the initial coherent wavepacket. The vibrational dynamics of single molecules is visualized by time-delayed probe pulse dissociating them one at a time. Two mechanisms for the echo formation are discussed: ac Stark-induced molecular potential shaking and creation of depletion-induced "hole" in the nuclear spatial distribution. Interplay between the optically induced echoes and quantum revivals of the vibrational wave packets is observed and theoretically analyzed. The single molecule wave packet echoes may lead to the development of new tools for probing ultrafast intramolecular processes in various molecules.

FAHT: An Adaptive Fairness-aware Decision Tree Classifier

Automated data-driven decision-making systems are ubiquitous across a wide spread of online as well as offline services. These systems, depend on sophisticated learning algorithms and available data, to optimize the service function for decision support assistance. However, there is a growing concern about the accountability and fairness of the employed models by the fact that often the available historic data is intrinsically discriminatory, i.e., the proportion of members sharing one or more sensitive attributes is higher than the proportion in the population as a whole when receiving positive classification, which leads to a lack of fairness in decision support system. A number of fairness-aware learning methods have been proposed to handle this concern. However, these methods tackle fairness as a static problem and do not take the evolution of the underlying stream population into consideration. In this paper, we introduce a learning mechanism to design a fair classifier for online stream based decision-making. Our learning model, FAHT (Fairness-Aware Hoeffding Tree), is an extension of the well-known Hoeffding Tree algorithm for decision tree induction over streams, that also accounts for fairness. Our experiments show that our algorithm is able to deal with discrimination in streaming environments, while maintaining a moderate predictive performance over the stream.

A Deterministic Self-Organizing Map Approach and its Application on Satellite Data based Cloud Type Classification

A self-organizing map (SOM) is a type of competitive artificial neural network, which projects the high-dimensional input space of the training samples into a low-dimensional space with the topology relations preserved. This makes SOMs supportive of organizing and visualizing complex data sets and have been pervasively used among numerous disciplines with different applications. Notwithstanding its wide applications, the self-organizing map is perplexed by its inherent randomness, which produces dissimilar SOM patterns even when being trained on identical training samples with the same parameters every time, and thus causes usability concerns for other domain practitioners and precludes more potential users from exploring SOM based applications in a broader spectrum. Motivated by this practical concern, we propose a deterministic approach as a supplement to the standard self-organizing map. In accordance with the theoretical design, the experimental results with satellite cloud data demonstrate the effective and efficient organization as well as simplification capabilities of the proposed approach.

Field-free Three-Dimensional Orientation of Asymmetric-Top Molecules

Alignment and orientation of molecules by intense, ultrashort laser fields are crucial for a variety of applications in physics and chemistry. These include control of high harmonics generation, molecular orbitals tomography, control of molecular photoionization and dissociation processes, production of "molecular movies" with the help of X-ray free-electron laser sources and ultrafast electron diffraction of relativistic electrons. While the dynamics of laser-induced molecular alignment has been extensively studied and demonstrated, molecular orientation is a much more challenging task, especially for asymmetric-top molecules. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of a field-free, all-optical three-dimensional orientation of asymmetric-top molecules by means of phase-locked cross-polarized two-color laser pulses. In addition to the conventional integrated orientation factor, we report the differential degree of orientation which is not amenable to optical measurements, but is readily accessible in our angle-resolved imaging technique. Our scheme applies to a wide class of asymmetric molecules and opens new ways towards controlling their orientation, eventually leading to direct imaging of structure of gas-phase molecules using advanced free electron laser beams with extremely high spatiotemporal resolution.

Spatiotemporal steering of photoelectron emission in multiphoton above-threshold ionization

We experimentally demonstrate spatiotemporal steering of photoelectron emission in multiphoton above-threshold single ionization of atoms exposed to a phase-controlled orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) laser pulse. Spatial and energy resolved photoelectron angular distributions are measured as a function of the laser phase, allowing us to look into the fine structures and emission dynamics. The slow and fast photoelectrons, distinguished by the energy larger or smaller than 2Up with Up being the ponderomotive energy of a free electron in the laser field, have distinct spatiotemporal dependences of the laser waveform. The phase-of-phase of the slow electron oscillates as functions of both the energy and emission direction, however, the fast electron present rather flat phase structure which merely depends on its emission direction. Three-dimensional generalized quantum trajectory Monte Carlo simulations are performed to explore the sub-cycle dynamics of the electron emission in the phase-controlled OTC pulse.
