A Novel Genetic Algorithm with Hierarchical Evaluation Strategy for Hyperparameter Optimisation of Graph Neural Networks

Graph representation of structured data can facilitate the extraction of stereoscopic features, and it has demonstrated excellent ability when working with deep learning systems, the so-called Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). Choosing a promising architecture for constructing GNNs can be transferred to a hyperparameter optimisation problem, a very challenging task due to the size of the underlying search space and high computational cost for evaluating candidate GNNs. To address this issue, this research presents a novel genetic algorithm with a hierarchical evaluation strategy (HESGA), which combines the full evaluation of GNNs with a fast evaluation approach. By using full evaluation, a GNN is represented by a set of hyperparameter values and trained on a specified dataset, and root mean square error (RMSE) will be used to measure the quality of the GNN represented by the set of hyperparameter values (for regression problems). While in the proposed fast evaluation process, the training will be interrupted at an early stage, the difference of RMSE values between the starting and interrupted epochs will be used as a fast score, which implies the potential of the GNN being considered. To coordinate both types of evaluations, the proposed hierarchical strategy uses the fast evaluation in a lower level for recommending candidates to a higher level, where the full evaluation will act as a final assessor to maintain a group of elite individuals. To validate the effectiveness of HESGA, we apply it to optimise two types of deep graph neural networks. The experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate its advantages compared to Bayesian hyperparameter optimization.

Neural Review Rating Prediction with Hierarchical Attentions and Latent Factors

Text reviews can provide rich useful semantic information for modeling users and items, which can benefit rating prediction in recommendation. Different words and reviews may have different informativeness for users or items. Besides, different users and items should be personalized. Most existing works regard all reviews equally or utilize a general attention mechanism. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical attention model fusing latent factor model for rating prediction with reviews, which can focus on important words and informative reviews. Specially, we use the factor vectors of Latent Factor Model to guide the attention network and combine the factor vectors with feature representation learned from reviews to predict the final ratings. Experiments on real-world datasets validate the effectiveness of our approach.

NRPA: Neural Recommendation with Personalized Attention

Existing review-based recommendation methods usually use the same model to learn the representations of all users/items from reviews posted by users towards items. However, different users have different preference and different items have different characteristics. Thus, the same word or similar reviews may have different informativeness for different users and items. In this paper we propose a neural recommendation approach with personalized attention to learn personalized representations of users and items from reviews. We use a review encoder to learn representations of reviews from words, and a user/item encoder to learn representations of users or items from reviews. We propose a personalized attention model, and apply it to both review and user/item encoders to select different important words and reviews for different users/items. Experiments on five datasets validate our approach can effectively improve the performance of neural recommendation.

Decay of a model system of radiating gas

This paper is concerned with optimal time-decay estimates of solutions of the Cauchy problem to a model system of the radiating gas in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Compared to Liu and Kawashima (2011) \cite{Liu1} and Wang and Wang (2009) \cite{Wang}, without smallness assumption of initial perturbation in $L^1$-norm, we study large time behavior of small amplitude classical solutions to the Cauchy problem. The optimal $H^N$-norm time-decay rates of the solutions in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $1\leq n\leq4$ are obtained by applying the Fourier splitting method introduced in Schonbek (1980) \cite{Schonbek1} with a slight modification and an energy method. Furthermore, basing on a refined pure energy method introduced in Guo and Wang \cite{Guo} (2011), we give optimal $L^p$-$L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ decay estimates of the derivatives of solutions when initial perturbation is bounded in $L^p$-norm with some $p\in(1,2]$.
