Age of Semantic Information-Aware Wireless Transmission for Remote Monitoring Systems

Semantic communication is emerging as an effective means of facilitating intelligent and context-aware communication for next-generation communication systems. In this paper, we propose a novel metric called Age of Incorrect Semantics (AoIS) for the transmission of video frames over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels in a monitoring system. Different from the conventional age-based approaches, we jointly consider the information freshness and the semantic importance, and then formulate a time-averaged AoIS minimization problem by jointly optimizing the semantic actuation indicator, transceiver beamformer, and the semantic symbol design. We first transform the original problem into a low-complexity problem via the Lyapunov optimization. Then, we decompose the transformed problem into multiple subproblems and adopt the alternative optimization (AO) method to solve each subproblem. Specifically, we propose two efficient algorithms, i.e., the successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm and the low-complexity zero-forcing (ZF) algorithm for optimizing transceiver beamformer. We adopt exhaustive search methods to solve the semantic actuation policy indicator optimization problem and the transmitted semantic symbol design problem. Experimental results demonstrate that our scheme can preserve more than 50\% of the original information under the same AoIS compared to the constrained baselines.

Just Noticeable Difference for Large Multimodal Models

Just noticeable difference (JND), the minimum change that the human visual system (HVS) can perceive, has been studied for decades. Although recent work has extended this line of research into machine vision, there has been a scarcity of studies systematically exploring its perceptual boundaries across multiple tasks and stimulus types, particularly in the current era of rapidly advancing large multimodal models (LMMs), where studying the multifaceted capabilities of models has become a mainstream focus. Moreover, the perceptual defects of LMMs are not investigated thoroughly, resulting in potential security issues and suboptimal response efficiency. In this paper, we take an initial attempt and demonstrate that there exist significant visual blind spots in current LMMs. To systemically quantify this characteristic, we propose a new concept, {\bf LMM-JND}, together with its determination pipeline. Targeting uncovering the behavior commonalities in HVS-aligned visual perception tasks, we delve into several LMM families and construct a large-scale dataset, named VPA-JND, which contains 21.5k reference images with over 489k stimuli across 12 distortion types, to facilitate LMM-JND studies. VPA-JND exposes areas where state-of-the-art LMMs, including GPT-4o and the InternVL2.5 series, struggle with basic comparison queries and fall significantly short of human-level visual performance. We further explore the effects of vision and language backbones and find a notable correlation between their design philosophy that may instruct the future refinement of LMMs for their visual acuity. Together, our research underscores the significance of LMM-JND as a unique perspective for studying LMMs, and predictable LMM-JND is crucial for security concerns. Distributed Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Gradient Quantization for Federated Learning Enabled Vehicle Edge Computing

Federated Learning (FL) can protect the privacy of the vehicles in vehicle edge computing (VEC) to a certain extent through sharing the gradients of vehicles' local models instead of local data. The gradients of vehicles' local models are usually large for the vehicular artificial intelligence (AI) applications, thus transmitting such large gradients would cause large per-round latency. Gradient quantization has been proposed as one effective approach to reduce the per-round latency in FL enabled VEC through compressing gradients and reducing the number of bits, i.e., the quantization level, to transmit gradients. The selection of quantization level and thresholds determines the quantization error, which further affects the model accuracy and training time. To do so, the total training time and quantization error (QE) become two key metrics for the FL enabled VEC. It is critical to jointly optimize the total training time and QE for the FL enabled VEC. However, the time-varying channel condition causes more challenges to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a distributed deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based quantization level allocation scheme to optimize the long-term reward in terms of the total training time and QE. Extensive simulations identify the optimal weighted factors between the total training time and QE, and demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Blockchain-Enabled Variational Information Bottleneck for Data Extraction Based on Mutual Information in Internet of Vehicles

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) network can address the issue of limited computing resources and data processing capabilities of individual vehicles, but it also brings the risk of privacy leakage to vehicle users. Applying blockchain technology can establish secure data links within the IoV, solving the problems of insufficient computing resources for each vehicle and the security of data transmission over the network. However, with the development of the IoV, the amount of data interaction between multiple vehicles and between vehicles and base stations, roadside units, etc., is continuously increasing. There is a need to further reduce the interaction volume, and intelligent data compression is key to solving this problem. The VIB technique facilitates the training of encoding and decoding models, substantially diminishing the volume of data that needs to be transmitted. This paper introduces an innovative approach that integrates blockchain with VIB, referred to as BVIB, designed to lighten computational workloads and reinforce the security of the network. We first construct a new network framework by separating the encoding and decoding networks to address the computational burden issue, and then propose a new algorithm to enhance the security of IoV networks. We also discuss the impact of the data extraction rate on system latency to determine the most suitable data extraction rate. An experimental framework combining Python and C++ has been established to substantiate the efficacy of our BVIB approach. Comprehensive simulation studies indicate that the BVIB consistently excels in comparison to alternative foundational methodologies.

Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient for MIMO-AFDM System

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a promising chirp-assisted multicarrier waveform for future high mobility communications. A significant challenge in MIMO-AFDM systems is the multi-user interference (MUI), which can be effectively addressed by employing precoding techniques. However, the complexity introduced by AFDM makes the precoding process computationally expensive and challenging. To overcome this issue, We combine AFDM channel sparse property and using Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) method to iteratively process the precoding, thereby reducing the complexity of the precoding design. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed sparsification approach, coupled with the PCG method, achieving quite precoding performance while significantly reducing computational complexity. This makes the application of AFDM more feasible and efficient for high-mobility communication scenarios, paving the way for its broader implementation in next-generation communication systems.

Low-Latency Terrestrial Interference Detection for Satellite-to-Device Communications

Direct satellite-to-device communication is a promising future direction due to its lower latency and enhanced efficiency. However, intermittent and unpredictable terrestrial interference significantly affects system reliability and performance. Continuously employing sophisticated interference mitigation techniques is practically inefficient. Motivated by the periodic idle intervals characteristic of burst-mode satellite transmissions, this paper investigates online interference detection frameworks specifically tailored for satellite-to-device scenarios. We first rigorously formulate interference detection as a binary hypothesis testing problem, leveraging differences between Rayleigh (no interference) and Rice (interference present) distributions. Then, we propose a cumulative sum (CUSUM)-based online detector for scenarios with known interference directions, explicitly characterizing the trade-off between detection latency and false alarm rate, and establish its asymptotic optimality. For practical scenarios involving unknown interference direction, we further propose a generalized likelihood ratio (GLR)-based detection method, jointly estimating interference direction via the Root-MUSIC algorithm. Numerical results validate our theoretical findings and demonstrate that our proposed methods achieve high detection accuracy with remarkably low latency, highlighting their practical applicability in future satellite-to-device communication systems.

Cloud-cloud collision and star formation in G013.313+0.193

We study the G013.313+0.193 G013.313 region, a complex environment characterized by molecular cloud interactions indicative of cloud-cloud collision (CCC). Observations of the NH3(1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions were obtained using the Nanshan 26 m radio telescope, while HCO+ (1-0), 12CO, 13CO, and C18O(1-0) transitions from the Purple Mountain Observatory Delingha 14 m telescope. Archival data are also included. We identified key observational signatures of CCC, including complementary spatial distributions, U-shaped structures, bridge features, and V-shaped velocity distributions. The position-velocity diagrams (P-V) reveal clear indications of gas interaction between two velocity components, suggesting an ongoing collision at an estimated angle of approximately 45 degree to the line of sight. The estimated collision timescale is 0.35-1.03 Myr, aligned with the inferred ages of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the region, supporting the hypothesis of collision-induced star formation. Hub-filament system (HFS) are identified in the compressed gas region, where filaments converge toward a dense hub, suggesting the CCC as a potential driver of HFS formation and massive star formation. The high column density suggests favorable conditions for the formation of massive stars. Although alternative kinematic drivers such as longitudinal collapse and shear motion are considered, CCC remains the most plausible explanation for the observed features. Our findings contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms of cloud dynamics and massive star formation in turbulent molecular environments.

Fluid Antenna-Empowered Receive Spatial Modulation

Fluid antenna (FA), as an emerging antenna technology, fully exploits spatial diversity. This paper integrates FA with the receive spatial modulation (RSM) scheme and proposes a novel FA-empowered RSM (FA-RSM) system. In this system, the transmitter is equipped with an FA that simultaneously activates multiple ports to transmit precoded signals. We address three key challenges in the FA-RSM system: port selection, theoretical analysis, and detection. First, for port selection, an optimal algorithm from a capacity maximization perspective are proposed, followed by two low-complexity alternatives. Second, for theoretical analysis, performance evaluation metrics are provided for port selection, which demonstrate that increasing the number of activated ports enhances system performance. Third, regarding detection, two low-complexity detectors are proposed. Simulation results confirm that the FA-RSM system significantly outperforms the conventional RSM system. The proposed low-complexity port selection algorithms facilitate minimal performance degradation. Moreover, while activating additional ports improves performance, the gain gradually saturates due to inherent spatial correlation, highlighting the importance of effective port selection in reducing system complexity and cost. Finally, both proposed detectors achieve near-optimal detection performance with low computational complexity, emphasizing the receiver-friendly nature of the FA-RSM system.

Semantic-Aware Resource Management for C-V2X Platooning via Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Semantic communication transmits the extracted features of information rather than raw data, significantly reducing redundancy, which is crucial for addressing spectrum and energy challenges in 6G networks. In this paper, we introduce semantic communication into a cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X)- based autonomous vehicle platoon system for the first time, aiming to achieve efficient management of communication resources in a dynamic environment. Firstly, we construct a mathematical model for semantic communication in platoon systems, in which the DeepSC model and MU-DeepSC model are used to semantically encode and decode unimodal and multi-modal data, respectively. Then, we propose the quality of experience (QoE) metric based on semantic similarity and semantic rate. Meanwhile, we consider the success rate of semantic information transmission (SRS) metric to ensure the fairness of channel resource allocation. Next, the optimization problem is posed with the aim of maximizing the QoE in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links while improving SRS. To solve this mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) and adapt to time-varying channel conditions, the paper proposes a distributed semantic-aware multi-modal resource allocation (SAMRA) algorithm based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), referred to as SAMRAMARL. The algorithm can dynamically allocate channels and power and determine semantic symbol length based on the contextual importance of the transmitted information, ensuring efficient resource utilization. Finally, extensive simulations have demonstrated that SAMRAMARL outperforms existing methods, achieving significant gains in QoE, SRS, and communication delay in C-V2X platooning scenarios.

ICDM: Interference Cancellation Diffusion Models for Wireless Semantic Communications

Diffusion models (DMs) have recently achieved significant success in wireless communications systems due to their denoising capabilities. The broadcast nature of wireless signals makes them susceptible not only to Gaussian noise, but also to unaware interference. This raises the question of whether DMs can effectively mitigate interference in wireless semantic communication systems. In this paper, we model the interference cancellation problem as a maximum a posteriori (MAP) problem over the joint posterior probability of the signal and interference, and theoretically prove that the solution provides excellent estimates for the signal and interference. To solve this problem, we develop an interference cancellation diffusion model (ICDM), which decomposes the joint posterior into independent prior probabilities of the signal and interference, along with the channel transition probablity. The log-gradients of these distributions at each time step are learned separately by DMs and accurately estimated through deriving. ICDM further integrates these gradients with advanced numerical iteration method, achieving accurate and rapid interference cancellation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ICDM significantly reduces the mean square error (MSE) and enhances perceptual quality compared to schemes without ICDM. For example, on the CelebA dataset under the Rayleigh fading channel with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of $20$ dB and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of 0 dB, ICDM reduces the MSE by 4.54 dB and improves the learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS) by 2.47 dB.

Movable Antenna Aided Full-Duplex ISAC System with Self-Interference Mitigation

Movable antenna (MA) has shown significant potential for improving the performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. In this paper, we model an MA-aided ISAC system operating in a communication full-duplex mono-static sensing framework. The self-interference channel is modeled as a function of the antenna position vectors under the near-field channel condition. We develop an optimization problem to maximize the weighted sum of downlink and uplink communication rates alongside the mutual information relevant to the sensing task. To address this highly non-convex problem, we employ the fractional programming (FP) method and propose an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm that jointly optimizes the beamforming, user power allocation, and antenna positions at the transceivers. Given the sensitivity of the AO-based algorithm to the initial antenna positions, a PSO-based algorithm is proposed to explore superior sub-optimal antenna positions within the feasible region. Numerical results indicate that the proposed algorithms enable the MA system to effectively leverage the antenna position flexibility for accurate beamforming in a complex ISAC scenario. This enhances the system's self-interference cancellation (SIC) capabilities and markedly improves its overall performance and reliability compared to conventional fixed-position antenna designs.

Learnable Residual-Based Latent Denoising in Semantic Communication

A latent denoising semantic communication (SemCom) framework is proposed for robust image transmission over noisy channels. By incorporating a learnable latent denoiser into the receiver, the received signals are preprocessed to effectively remove the channel noise and recover the semantic information, thereby enhancing the quality of the decoded images. Specifically, a latent denoising mapping is established by an iterative residual learning approach to improve the denoising efficiency while ensuring stable performance. Moreover, channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is utilized to estimate and predict the latent similarity score (SS) for conditional denoising, where the number of denoising steps is adapted based on the predicted SS sequence, further reducing the communication latency. Finally, simulations demonstrate that the proposed framework can effectively and efficiently remove the channel noise at various levels and reconstruct visual-appealing images.

Observation of Near-Critical Kibble-Zurek Scaling in Rydberg Atom Arrays

The Kibble-Zurek scaling reveals the universal dynamics when a system is linearly ramped across a symmetry-breaking phase transition. However, in reality, inevitable finite-size effects or symmetrybreaking perturbations can often smear out the critical point and render the phase transition into a smooth crossover. In this letter, we show experimentally that the precise Kibble-Zurek scaling can be retained in the near-critical crossover regime, not necessarily crossing the critical point strictly. The key ingredient to achieving this near-critical Kibble-Zurek scaling is that the system size and the symmetry-breaking field must be appropriately scaled following the variation of ramping speeds. The experiment is performed in a reconfigurable Rydberg atom array platform, where the Rydberg blockade effect induces a Z2 symmetry-breaking transition. The atom array platform enables precise control of the system size and the zigzag geometry as a symmetry-breaking field. Therefore, we can demonstrate notable differences in the precision of the Kibble-Zurek scaling with or without properly scaling the system size and the zigzag geometry. Our results strengthen the Kibble-Zurek scaling as an increasingly valuable tool for investigating phase transition in quantum simulation platforms.

Semantic-aided Parallel Image Transmission Compatible with Practical System

In this paper, we propose a novel semantic-aided image communication framework for supporting the compatibility with practical separation-based coding architectures. Particularly, the deep learning (DL)-based joint source-channel coding (JSCC) is integrated into the classical separate source-channel coding (SSCC) to transmit the images via the combination of semantic stream and image stream from DL networks and SSCC respectively, which we name as parallel-stream transmission. The positive coding gain stems from the sophisticated design of the JSCC encoder, which leverages the residual information neglected by the SSCC to enhance the learnable image features. Furthermore, a conditional rate adaptation mechanism is introduced to adjust the transmission rate of semantic stream according to residual, rendering the framework more flexible and efficient to bandwidth allocation. We also design a dynamic stream aggregation strategy at the receiver, which provides the composite framework with more robustness to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) fluctuations in wireless systems compared to a single conventional codec. Finally, the proposed framework is verified to surpass the performance of both traditional and DL-based competitors in a large range of scenarios and meanwhile, maintains lightweight in terms of the transmission and computational complexity of semantic stream, which exhibits the potential to be applied in real systems.

InstantSticker: Realistic Decal Blending via Disentangled Object Reconstruction

We present InstantSticker, a disentangled reconstruction pipeline based on Image-Based Lighting (IBL), which focuses on highly realistic decal blending, simulates stickers attached to the reconstructed surface, and allows for instant editing and real-time rendering. To achieve stereoscopic impression of the decal, we introduce shadow factor into IBL, which can be adaptively optimized during training. This allows the shadow brightness of surfaces to be accurately decomposed rather than baked into the diffuse color, ensuring that the edited texture exhibits authentic shading. To address the issues of warping and blurriness in previous methods, we apply As-Rigid-As-Possible (ARAP) parameterization to pre-unfold a specified area of the mesh and use the local UV mapping combined with a neural texture map to enhance the ability to express high-frequency details in that area. For instant editing, we utilize the Disney BRDF model, explicitly defining material colors with 3-channel diffuse albedo. This enables instant replacement of albedo RGB values during the editing process, avoiding the prolonged optimization required in previous approaches. In our experiment, we introduce the Ratio Variance Warping (RVW) metric to evaluate the local geometric warping of the decal area. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method surpasses previous decal blending methods in terms of editing quality, editing speed and rendering speed, achieving the state-of-the-art.

Grant-Free Random Access in Uplink LEO Satellite Communications with OFDM

This paper investigates joint device activity detection and channel estimation for grant-free random access in Low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications. We consider uplink communications from multiple single-antenna terrestrial users to a LEO satellite equipped with a uniform planar array of multiple antennas, where orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation is adopted. To combat the severe Doppler shift, a transmission scheme is proposed, where the discrete prolate spheroidal basis expansion model (DPS-BEM) is introduced to reduce the number of unknown channel parameters. Then the vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm is employed to approximate the minimum mean square error estimation of the channel, and the Markov random field is combined to capture the channel sparsity. Meanwhile, the expectation-maximization (EM) approach is integrated to learn the hyperparameters in priors. Finally, active devices are detected by calculating energy of the estimated channel. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional algorithms in terms of activity error rate and channel estimation precision.
