Inverse Bootstrapping Conformal Field Theories

We propose a novel approach to study conformal field theories (CFTs) in general dimensions. In the conformal bootstrap program, one usually searches for consistent CFT data that satisfy crossing symmetry. In the new approach, we reverse the logic and interpret manifestly crossing-symmetric functions as generating functions of conformal data. Physical CFTs can be obtained by scanning the space of symmetric functions. By truncating the fusion rules, we are able to concentrate on the low-lying operators and derive some approximate relations for their conformal data. It turns out that the free scalar theory, the 2d minimal model CFTs, the $ϕ^{4}$ Wilson-Fisher CFT, the Lee-Yang CFTs and the Ising CFTs are consistent with the universal relations from the minimal fusion rule $ϕ_1\times ϕ_1=I+ϕ_2+T$, where $ϕ_1,\,ϕ_2$ are scalar operators, $I$ is the identity operator and $T$ is the stress tensor.

Exclusive Backward-Angle Omega Meson Electroproduction

This work is a pioneering study of backward-angle omega cross sections through the exclusive 1H(e,e'p)omega reaction using the missing mass reconstruction technique. The extracted cross sections are separated into the transverse (T), longitudinal (L), and LT, TT interference terms. The analyzed data were part of experiment E01-004 (Fpi-2), which used 2.6-5.2GeV electron beams and HMS+SOS spectrometers in Jefferson Lab Hall C. The primary objective was to detect coincidence pion in the forward-angle, where the backward-angle omega events were fortuitously detected. The experiment has central Q2 values of 1.60 and 2.45GeV2, at W=2.21GeV. There was significant coverage in phi and epsilon, which allowed separation of sigma_T,L,LT,TT. The data set has a unique u coverage of -u~0, which corresponds to -t>4GeV2. The separated sigma_T result suggest a flat ~1/Q^(1.33+/-1.21) dependence, whereas sigma_L seems to hold a stronger 1/Q^(9.43+/-6.28) dependence. The sigma_L/sigma_T ratio indicate sigma_T dominance at Q2=2.45 GeV2 at the ~90% confidence level. After translating the results into the -t space of the published CLAS data, our data show evidence of a backward-angle omega electroproduction peak at both Q2 settings. Previously, this phenomenon showing both forward and backward-angle peaks was only observed in the meson photoproduction data. Through comparison of our sigma_T data with the prediction of the Transition Distribution Amplitude (TDA) model, and signs of sigma_T dominance, promising indications of the applicability of the TDA factorization are demonstrated at a much lower Q2 value than its preferred range of Q2>10GeV2. These studies have opened a new means to study the transition of the nucleon wavefunction through backward-angle experimental observables.

Repulsive Fermi polarons with negative effective mass

Recent LENS experiment on a 3D Fermi gas has reported a negative effective mass ($m^*<0$) of Fermi polarons in the strongly repulsive regime. There naturally arise a question whether the negative $m^*$ is a precursor of the instability towards phase separation (or itinerant ferromagnetism). In this work, we make use of the exact solutions to study the ground state and excitation properties of repulsive Fermi polarons in 1D, which can also exhibit a negative $m^*$ in the super Tonks-Girardeau regime. By analyzing the total spin, quasi-momentum distribution and pair correlations, we conclude that the negative $m^*$ is irrelevant to the instability towards ferromagnetism or phase separation, but rather an intrinsic feature of collective excitations for fermions in the strongly repulsive regime. Surprisingly, for large and negative $m^*$, such excitation is accompanied with a spin density modulation when the majority fermions move closer to the impurity rather than being repelled far away, contrary to the picture of phase separation. These results suggest an alternative interpretation of negative $m^*$ as observed in recent LENS experiment.

Novel nonlinear kinetic terms for gravitons

A set of novel derivative terms for spin-2 fields are proposed. They are the wedge products of curvature two-forms and vielbeins. In this work, we investigate the properties of novel two-derivative terms in the context of bi-gravity. Based on a minisuperspace analysis, we identify a large class of bi-gravity models where the Boulware-Deser ghost could be absent. We give a new perspective that Weyl Gravity and New Massive Gravity belong to this class of bi-gravity models involving novel derivative terms. In addition, we discuss the UV cut-off scales, dynamical symmetric conditions and novel higher-derivative terms.

Electron correlation in beryllium: Effects in ground state, short-pulse photoionization and time-delay studies

We apply a three-dimensional (3D) implementation of the time-dependent restricted-active-space self-consistent-field (TD-RASSCF) method to investigate effects of electron correlation in the ground state of Be as well as in its photoionization dynamics by short XUV pulses, including time-delay in photoionization. First, we obtain the ground state by propagation in imaginary time. We show that the flexibility of the TD-RASSCF on the choice of the active orbital space makes it possible to consider only relevant active space orbitals, facilitating the convergence to the ground state compared to the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree-Fock method, used as a benchmark to show the accuracy and efficiency of TD-RASSCF. Second, we solve the equations of motion to compute photoelectron spectra of Be after interacting with a short linearly polarized XUV laser pulse. We compare the spectra for different RAS schemes, and in this way we identify the orbital spaces that are relevant for an accurate description of the photoelectron spectra. Finally, we investigate the effects of electron correlation on the magnitude of the relative time-delay in the photoionization process into two different ionic channels. One channel, the ground state channel in the ion, is accessible without electron correlation. The other channel is only accessible when including electron correlation. The time-delay is highly sensitivity to the choice of the active space, and hence to the account of electron-electron correlation.

On the absence of the Boulware-Deser ghost in novel graviton kinetic terms

Using novel nonlinear kinetic terms for gravitons, a large class of bi-gravity models were constructed, which are potentially free of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost. In this work, we derive their Hamiltonians using the ADM formalism, and verify that the BD ghost is eliminated by additional constraints. The general Hamiltonian structure is analogous to that of the other class of bi-gravity models free of the BD ghost.

Unifying Ghost-Free Lorentz-Invariant Lagrangians

We present the details of the novel framework for Lagrangian field theories that are Lorentz-invariant and lead to at most second order equations of motion. The use of antisymmetric structure is of crucial importance. The general ghost-free Lagrangians are constructed and then translated into the language of differential forms. The ghost-freeness has a geometric nature. A novel duality is proposed which generalizes the Hodge duality in Maxwell's theory. We discuss how the well-established theories are reformulated and propose many new theories.

On the gluon operator effective potential in holographic Yang-Mills theory

The holographic formalism is applied to the calculation of the effective potential for the scalar glueball operator. Three different versions of this operator are defined, and for each we compute the associated effective potential and discuss its properties and scheme ambiguities. Contact is made to earlier attempts to guess this effective potential from the conformal anomaly. We apply our results to the Improved Holographic QCD model calculating the glueball condensate.

No-Go Theorems for Unitary and Interacting Partially Massless Spin-Two Fields

We examine the generic theory of a partially massless (PM) spin-two field interacting with gravity in four dimensions from a bottom-up perspective. By analyzing the most general form of the Lagrangian, we first show that if such a theory exists, its de Sitter background must admit either so(1, 5) or so(2, 4) global symmetry depending on the relative sign of the kinetic terms: the former for a positive sign the latter for a negative sign. Further analysis reveals that the coupling constant of the PM cubic self-interaction must be fixed with a purely imaginary number in the case of a positive sign. We conclude that there cannot exist a unitary theory of a PM spin-two field coupled to Einstein gravity with a perturbatively local Lagrangian. In the case of a negative sign we recover conformal gravity. As a special case of our analysis, it is shown that the PM limit of massive gravity also lacks the PM gauge symmetry.

Holographic RG flow and the Quantum Effective Action

The calculation of the full (renormalized) holographic action is undertaken in general Einstein-scalar theories. The appropriate formalism is developed and the renormalized effective action is calculated up to two derivatives in the metric and scalar operators. The holographic RG equations involve Ricci flow for the space-time metric as well as the standard $β$-function flow for scalar operators. Several examples are analyzed and the effective action is calculated. A set of conserved quantities of the holographic flow is found, whose interpretation is not yet understood.

Hamamatsu R1584 PMT Modifications

Four Hamamatsu H6528 Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) assemblies were purchased by the University of Regina, to be used on the SHMS Heavy Gas Cherenkov detector. Despite the excellent gain, the H6528 signal output has two disturbing characteristics: discharges and ringing tails. In this report, we offer solutions to overcome these issues.
