Probing axion-like particles at the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider~(EIC), a forthcoming powerful high-luminosity facility, represents an exciting opportunity to explore new physics. In this article, we study the potential of the EIC to probe the coupling between axion-like particles~(ALPs) and photons in coherent scattering. The ALPs can be produced via photon fusion and decay back to two photons inside the EIC detector. In a prompt-decay search, we find that the EIC can set the most stringent bound for $m_a \lesssim 20\,\GeV$ and probe the effective scales $Λ\lesssim 10^{5}\,$GeV. In a displaced-vertex search, which requires adopting an EM calorimeter technology that provides directionality, the EIC could probe ALPs with $m_a \lesssim 1\,\GeV$ at effective scales $Λ\lesssim 10^{7}\,\GeV$. Combining the two search strategies, the EIC can probe a significant portion of unexplored parameter space in the $0.2 < m_a <20\,\GeV$ mass range.

Principle of minimal singularity for Green's functions

Analytic continuations of integer-valued parameters can lead to profound insights, such as angular momentum in Regge theory, the number of replicas in spin glasses, the number of internal degrees of freedom, the spacetime dimension in dimensional regularization and Wilson's renormalization group. In this work, we consider a new kind of analytic continuation of correlation functions, inspired by two recent approaches to underdetermined Dyson-Schwinger equations in $D$-dimensional spacetime. If the Green's functions $G_n=\langleϕ^n\rangle$ admit analytic continuation to complex values of $n$, the two different approaches are unified by a novel principle for self-consistent problems: Singularities in the complex plane should be minimal. This principle manifests as the merging of different branches of Green's functions in the quartic theories. For $D=0$, we obtain the closed-form solutions of the general $gϕ^m$ theories, including the cases with complex coupling constant $g$ or non-integer power $m$. For $D=1$, we derive rapidly convergent results for the Hermitian quartic and non-Hermitian cubic theories by minimizing the complexity of the singularity at $n=\infty$.

Anomalous dimensions of partially-conserved higher-spin currents from conformal field theory: bosonic $ϕ^{2n}$ theories

In the free $\Box^k$ scalar conformal field theory, there exist conserved and partially-conserved higher-spin currents. We study their anomalous dimensions associated with $ϕ^{2n}$ interaction in the $ε$ expansion. We derive general formulae for the leading corrections from the conformal multiplet recombination, and verify their consistency with crossing symmetry using the Lorentzian inversion formula. The results are further extended to the O($N$) models.

Signatures of baryon junctions in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

Local gauge invariance of the baryon wave function leads to the emergence of a baryon junction, where three (or $N$, in $SU(N)$ gauge theory) string operators merge. The existence of baryon junction dramatically affects the dynamics of baryon stopping at high energies, and the corresponding predictions are supported by the recent data from STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Here we outline the ways in which the baryon junctions can be tested in semi-inclusive deep inelasttic scattering at Jefferson Laboratory and the future Electron Ion Collider.

Solving anharmonic oscillator with null states: Hamiltonian bootstrap and Dyson-Schwinger equations

As basic quantum mechanical models, anharmonic oscillators are recently revisited by bootstrap methods. An effective approach is to make use of the positivity constraints in Hermitian theories. There exists an alternative avenue based on the null state condition, which applies to both Hermitian and non-Hermitian theories. In this work, we carry out an analytic bootstrap study of the quartic oscillator based on the small coupling expansion. In the Hamiltonian formalism, we obtain the anharmonic generalization of Dirac's ladder operators. Furthermore, the Schrodinger equation can be interpreted as a null state condition generated by an anharmonic ladder operator. This provides an explicit example in which dynamics is incorporated into the principle of nullness. In the Lagrangian formalism, we show that the existence of null states can effectively eliminate the indeterminacy of the Dyson-Schwinger equations and systematically determine $n$-point Green's functions.

Taming Dyson-Schwinger equations with null states

In quantum field theory, the Dyson-Schwinger equations are an infinite set of coupled equations relating $n$-point Green's functions in a self-consistent manner. They have found important applications in non-perturbative studies, ranging from quantum chromodynamics and hadron physics to strongly correlated electron systems. However, they are notoriously formidable to solve. One of the main problems is that a finite truncation of the infinite system is underdetermined. Recently, Bender et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 101602 (2023)] proposed to make use of the large-$n$ asymptotic behaviors and successfully obtained accurate results in $D=0$ spacetime. At higher $D$, it seems more difficult to deduce the large-$n$ behaviors. In this paper, we propose another avenue in light of the null bootstrap. The underdetermined system is solved by imposing the null state condition. This approach can be extended to $D>0$ more readily. As concrete examples, we show that the cases of $D=0$ and $D=1$ indeed converge to the exact results for several Hermitian and non-Hermitian theories of the $gϕ^n$ type, including the complex solutions.

Null bootstrap for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

A stable physical system has an energy spectrum that is bounded from below. For quantum systems, the dangerous states of unboundedly low energies should decouple and become null. We propose the principle of nullness and apply it to the bootstrap study of Hermitian and non-Hermitian anharmonic oscillators.

Ising model close to $d=2$

The $d=2$ critical Ising model is described by an exactly solvable Conformal Field Theory (CFT). The deformation to $d=2+ε$ is a relatively simple system at strong coupling outside of even dimensions. Using novel numerical and analytical conformal bootstrap methods in Lorentzian signature, we show that the leading corrections to the Ising data are more singular than $ε$. There must be infinitely many new states due to the $d$-dependence of conformal symmetry. The linear independence of conformal blocks is central to this bootstrap approach, which can be extended to more rigorous studies of non-positive systems, such as non-unitary, defect/boundary and thermal CFTs.

Strange Hadron Spectroscopy with Secondary KL Beam in Hall D

We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$, and $Ω$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cosθ$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $Ξ$ and $Ω$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $Kπ$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(Kπ)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $κ/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters. Subsequently improving our knowledge of the low-lying scalar nonet in general.

Factorized lightcone expansion of conformal blocks

We present a factorized decomposition of 4-point scalar conformal blocks near the lightcone, which applies to arbitrary intermediate spin and general spacetime dimensions. Then we discuss the systematic expansion in large intermediate spin and the resummations of the large-spin tails of Regge trajectories. The basic integrals for the Lorentzian inversion are given by Wilson functions.

Lightcone expansions of conformal blocks in closed form

We present new closed-form expressions for 4-point scalar conformal blocks in the s- and t-channel lightcone expansions. Our formulae apply to intermediate operators of arbitrary spin in general dimensions. For physical spin $\ell$, they are composed of at most $(\ell+1)$ Gaussian hypergeometric functions at each order.

Closed-form expression for cross-channel conformal blocks near the lightcone

In the study of conformal field theories, conformal blocks in the lightcone limit are fundamental to the analytic conformal bootstrap method. Here we consider the lightcone limit of 4-point functions of generic scalar primaries. Based on the nonperturbative pole structure in spin of Lorentzian inversion, we propose the natural basis functions for cross-channel conformal blocks. In this new basis, we find a closed-form expression for crossed conformal blocks in terms of the Kampé de Fériet function, which applies to intermediate operators of arbitrary spin in general dimensions. We derive the general Lorentzian inversion for the case of identical external scaling dimensions. Our results for the lightcone limit also shed light on the complete analytic structure of conformal blocks in the lightcone expansion.

Coupled density-spin Bose-Einstein condensates dynamics and collapse in systems with quintic nonlinearity

We investigate the effects of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting on the coupled density-spin dynamics and collapse of the Bose-Einstein condensate driven by the quintic self-attraction in the same- and cross-spin channels. The characteristic feature of the collapse is the decrease in the width as given by the participation ratio of the density rather than by the expectation values of the coordinate. Qualitative arguments and numerical simulations reveal the existence of a critical spin-orbit coupling strength which either prohibits or leads to the collapse, and its dependence on other parameters, such as the condensates norm, spin-dependent nonlinear coupling, and the Zeeman splitting. The entire nonlinear dynamics critically depend on the initial spin sate.

Character Integral Representation of Zeta function in AdS$_{d+1}$: II. Application to partially-massless higher-spin gravities

We compute the one-loop free energies of the type-A$_\ell$ and type-B$_\ell$ higher-spin gravities in $(d+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_{d+1}$) spacetime. For large $d$ and $\ell$, these theories have a complicated field content, and hence it is difficult to compute their zeta functions using the usual methods. Applying the character integral representation of zeta function developed in the companion paper arXiv:1805.05646 to these theories, we show how the computation of their zeta function can be shortened considerably. We find that the results previously obtained for the massless theories ($\ell=1$) generalize to their partially-massless counterparts (arbitrary $\ell$) in arbitrary dimensions.

Character Integral Representation of Zeta function in AdS$_{d+1}$: I. Derivation of the general formula

The zeta function of an arbitrary field in $(d+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime is expressed as an integral transform of the corresponding $so(2,d)$ representation character, thereby extending the results of arXiv:1603.05387 for AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$ to arbitrary dimensions. The integration in the variables associated with the $so(d)$ part of the character can be recast into a more explicit form using derivatives. The explicit derivative expressions are presented for AdS$_{d+1}$ with $d=2,3,4,5,6$.

A unifying framework for ghost-free Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian field theories

We propose a framework for Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian field theories where Ostrogradsky's scalar ghosts could be absent. A key ingredient is the generalized Kronecker delta. The general Lagrangians are reformulated in the language of differential forms. The absence of higher order equations of motion for the scalar modes stems from the basic fact that every exact form is closed. The well-established Lagrangian theories for spin-0, spin-1, p-form, spin-2 fields have natural formulations in this framework. We also propose novel building blocks for Lagrangian field theories. Some of them are novel nonlinear derivative terms for spin-2 fields. It is nontrivial that Ostrogradsky's scalar ghosts are absent in these fully nonlinear theories.

New method for the conformal bootstrap with OPE truncations

We investigate two aspects of conformal field theories. In the first part, we study the general 4-point correlator of identical scalars around the fully crossing symmetric point $u=v=1$, where $u,v$ are conformally invariant cross ratios. Since this point is fully crossing invariant, we can deduce some general properties of the 4-point correlators from crossing symmetry. In the second part, we discuss the conformal bootstrap with OPE truncations. As a generalization of Gliozzi's method, we propose to extract the low-lying CFT data by minimizing the "error" induced by an OPE truncation. The error function $η$ measures the violation of crossing symmetry. The geometric interpretation of $η$ is the length of the vector associated with the truncated OPE. As an example, we apply the error-minimization method to the 2d Ising CFT with severely truncated OPEs.

Non-Relativistic Limits of Colored Gravity in Three Dimensions

The three-dimensional non-relativistic isometry algebras, namely Galilei and Newton-Hooke algebras, are known to admit double central extensions, which allows for non-degenerate bilinear forms hence for action principles through Chern-Simons formulation. In three-dimensional colored gravity, the same central extension helps the theory evade the multi-graviton no-go theorems by enlarging the color-decorated isometry algebra. We investigate the non-relativistic limits of three-dimensional colored gravity in terms of generalized İnönü-Wigner contractions.
