Optical-plug-assisted spin vortex in a $^{87}$Rb dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

Generating a spin vortex in a $^{87}$Rb dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a controllable way is still experimentally challenging. We propose an experimentally easy and tunable way to produce spin vortex by varying the potential barrier height and the width of an additionally applied optical plug. A topological phase transition occurs from the trivial single mode approximation phase to the optical-plug-assisted-vortex one, as the barrier height increases and the width lies in an appropriate range. The optical plug causes radial density variation thus the spin vortex is favored by significantly lowering the intrinsic magnetic dipolar energy. A type of coreless spin vortex, different from the conventional polar core vortex, is predicted by our numerical results. Our proposal removes a major obstacle to investigate the topological phase transition in a $^{87}$Rb dipolar spinor BEC.

All-optical pulse switching with a periodically driven dissipative quantum system

All-optical switching used to switch the input optical signals without any electro-optical conversion plays a vital role in the next generation of optical information processing devices. Even all-optical switchings (AOSs) with continuous input signals have been widely studied, all-optical pulse switchings (AOPSs) whose input signals are pulse sequences have rarely been investigated because of the time-dependent Hamiltonian, especially for dissipative quantum systems. In this paper, we propose an AOPS scheme, where a strong pulsed field is used to switch another pulsed input signal. With the help of Floquet-Lindblad theory, we identify the control field that can effectively turn on/off the input signal whose amplitude envelope is a square-wave (SW) pulse train in a three-level dissipative system. By comparing the properties of the AOPSs controlled by a continuous-wave (CW) field and an SW control field, we find that the SW field is more suitable to be a practical tool for controlling the input SW signal. It is interesting to impress that the switching efficacy is robust against pulse errors. The proposed protocol is readily implemented in atomic gases or superconducting circuits and corresponds to AOPSs or all-microwave pulse switchings.

Spontaneous decay induced quantum dynamics in Rydberg blockaded Λ-type atoms

Strongly Rydberg-blockaded two-level atoms form a Rydberg superatom, which is excited only to a collective symmetrical Dicke state. However, emerging often in the alkali-earth atoms, the spontaneous decay from the Rydberg state to an additional pooling state renders the ensemble no longer a closed superatom. Herein we present a computationally-efficient model to characterize the interaction between a fully Rydberg-blockaded ensemble of $N$ $Λ$-type three-level atoms and a strong probe light field in a coherent state. The model enables us to achieve a decomposition of the coupled dynamics in the strong field limit, which significantly reduces the complexity of computing the $N$-body system evolution and paves a way for practical analysis in experiments. A quasi-steady-state power spectrum with multiple sidebands is found in the scattered field. The relative heights of the sidebands show a time dependence determined by the atomic relaxation, which illuminates potential applications of using the system in information transfer of quantum networks. With negligible dissipative flipping to the unsymmetrical states, the atomic relaxation time indicating a linearly increasing pooling state fraction is derived analytically as a function of the atom number.

Generalized parametric resonance in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a generalized Mathieu equation (GME) which describes well the dynamics for two different models in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. The stability chart of this GME differs significantly from that of Mathieu's equation and the unstable dynamics under this GME is called generalized parametric resonance. A typical region of $ε\gtrsim 1$ and $δ\approx 0.25$ can be used to distinguish these two equations. The GME we propose not only explains the experimental results of Hoang et al. [Nat. Commun. 7, 11233 (2016)] in nematic space with a small driving strength, but predicts the behavior in the regime of large driving strength. In addition, the model in spin space we propose, whose dynamics also obeys this GME, can be well-tuned such that it is easily implemented in experiments.

Dual application of Chebyshev polynomial for efficiently computing thousands of central eigenvalues in many-spin systems

It is known that the statistical properties of the spectrum provide an essential characterization of quantum chaos. The computation of a large group of interior eigenvalues at the middle spectrum is thus an important problem for quantum many-body systems. We propose a dual application of Chebyshev polynomial (DACP) method to effciently find thousands of central eigenvalues, which are exponentially close to each other in terms of the system size. To cope with the near-degenerate problem, we use the Chebyshev polynomial to both construct an exponential of semicircle filter as the preconditioning step and generate a large set of proper states as the basis of the desired subspace. Besides, DACP owes an excellent property that its computation time is not influenced by the required number of eigenvalues. Numerical experiments on Ising spin chain and spin glass shards show the correctness and effciency of the proposed method. As our results demonstrate, DACP is a factor of 30 faster than the state-of-the-art shift-invert method for the Ising spin chain while 8 times faster for the spin glass shards. The memory requirements scale better with system size and could be a factor of 100 less than in the shift-invert approach.

Delta-Davidson method for interior eigenproblem in many-spin systems

Many numerical methods, such as tensor network approaches including density matrix renormalization group calculations, have been developed to calculate the extreme/ground states of quantum many-body systems. However, little attention has been paid to the central states, which are exponentially close to each other in terms of system size. We propose a Delta-Davidson (DELDAV) method to effciently find such interior (including the central) states in many-spin systems. The DELDAV method utilizes Delta filter in Chebyshev polynomial expansion combined with subspace diagonalization to overcome the nearly degenerate problem. Numerical experiments on Ising spin chain and spin glass shards show the correctness, effciency, and robustness of the proposed method in finding the interior states as well as the ground states. The sought interior states may be employed to identify many-body localization phase, quantum chaos, and extremely long-time dynamical structure.

Non-Markovian effect on quantum optical metrology under dissipative environment

Quantum metrology utilizes quantum effects to reach higher precision measurements of physical quantities compared with their classical counterparts. However the ubiquitous decoherence obstructs its application. Recently, non-Markovian effects are shown to be effective in performing quantum optical metrology under locally dissipative environments\cite{PhysRevLett.123.040402}. However, the mechanism is still rather hazy. Here, we uncover the reason why forming a bound state can protect the quantumness against a dissipative ambient via the quantum Fisher information of entangled coherent states. An exact analytical expression of the quantum Fisher information in the long-encoding-time condition is derived, which reveals that the dynamics of precision can asymptotically reach the ideal-case-promised one easily when the average photon number is small. Meanwhile, the scaling exhibits a transition from the weak Heisenberg limit to the sub-classical limit with the increase of average photon number. Our work provides a recipe to realize ultrasensitive measurements in the presence of noise by utilizing non-Markovian effects.

An analytical double-unitary-transformation approach for strongly and periodically driven three-level systems

Floquet theory combined with the generalized Van Vleck nearly degenerate perturbation theory, has been widely employed for studying various two-level systems that are driven by external fields via the time-dependent longitudinal (i.e., diagonal) couplings. However, three-level systems strongly driven by the time-dependent transverse (i.e., off-diagonal) couplings have rarely been investigated, due to the breakdown of the traditional rotating wave approximation. Meanwhile, the conventional perturbation theory is not directly applicable, since a small parameter for the perturbed part is no longer apparent. Here we develop a double-unitary-transformation approach to deal with the periodically modulated and strongly driven systems, where the time-dependent Hamiltonian has large off-diagonal elements. The first unitary transformation converts the strong off-diagonal elements to the diagonal ones, and the second enables us to harness the generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory to deal with the transformed Floquet matrix and also allows us to reduce the infinite-dimensional Floquet Hamiltonian to a finite effective one. For a strongly modulated three-level system, with the combination of the Floquet theory and the transformed generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory, we obtain analytical results of the system, which agree well with exact numerical solutions. This method offers a useful tool to analytically study the multi-level systems with strong transverse couplings.

Quantum memory assisted precision rotation sensing

We propose to implement a solid-state rotation sensor by employing a many-body quantum spin system which takes the advantages of the easy controllability of the electron spin and the robustness provided by the collective nuclear spin state. The sensor consists of a central electron spin coupled to many surrounding nuclear spins. Previously, this central spin system has been suggested to realize a quantum memory. Here, we further utilize the collective nuclear spins, which store a certain quantum state, to detect the macroscopic rotation. Different from other nuclear spin-based gyroscopes, our proposal does not directly manipulate nuclear spins via nuclear magnetic resonance technique. We analytically and numerically investigate the effects of partial nuclear polarization and decoherence on the sensitivity. We also briefly introduce the procedure to generate entanglement between nuclear spins through the quantum memory technique and to utilize this entanglement to enhance the sensing performance. Our proposal paves the way to the experimental realization of a compact solid-state, full-electrical and spin-based gyroscope.

Efficient generation of many-body entangled states by multilevel oscillations

We generate high-fidelity massively entangled states in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by utilizing multilevel oscillations. Combining the multilevel oscillations with additional adiabatic drives, we greatly shorten the necessary evolution time and relax the requirement on the control accuracy of quadratic Zeeman splitting, from micro-Gauss to milli-Gauss, for a $^{23}$Na spinor BEC. The achieved high fidelities over $96\%$ show that two kinds of massively entangled states, the many-body singlet state and the twin-Fock state, are almost perfectly generated. The generalized spin squeezing parameter drops to a value far below the standard quantum limit even with the presence of atom number fluctuations and stray magnetic fields, illustrating the robustness of our protocol under real experimental conditions. The generated many-body entangled states can be employed to achieve the Heisenberg-limit quantum precision measurement and to attack nonclassical problems in quantum information science.

Time-domain grating with a periodically driven qutrit

Physical systems in the time domain may exhibit analogous phenomena in real space, such as time crystals, time-domain Fresnel lenses, and modulational interference in a qubit. Here we report the experimental realization of time-domain grating using a superconducting qutrit in periodically modulated probe and control fields via two schemes: Simultaneous modulation and complementary modulation. Both experimental and numerical results exhibit modulated Autler-Townes (AT) and modulation-induced diffraction (MID) effects. Theoretical results also confirm that the peak positions of the interference fringes of AT and MID effects are determined by the usual two-level relative phases, while the observed diffraction fringes, appearing only in the complementary modulation, are however related to the three-level relative phase. Further analysis indicates that such a single-atom time-domain diffraction originates from the correlation effect between the two time-domain gratings. Moreover, we find that the widths of the diffraction fringes are independent of the control-field power. Our results shed light on the experimental exploration of quantum coherence for modulated multi-level systems and may find promising applications in fast all-microwave switches and quantum-gate operations in the strong-driving regime.

Uniaxial dynamical decoupling for an open quantum system

Dynamical decoupling (DD) is an active and effective method for suppressing decoherence of a quantum system from its environment. In contrast to the nominal biaxial DD,this work presents a uniaxial decoupling protocol that requires a significantly reduced number of pulses and a much lower bias field satisfying the "magic" condition. We show this uniaxial DD protocol works effectively in a number of model systems of practical interests, e.g., a spinor atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in stray magnetic fields (classical noise), or an electron spin coupled to nuclear spins (quantum noise) in a semiconductor quantum dot. It requires only half the number of control pulses and a 10-100 times lower bias field for decoupling as normally employed in the above mentioned illustrative examples, and the overall efficacy is robust against rotation errors of the control pulses. The uniaxial DD protocol we propose shines new light on coherent controls in quantum computing and quantum information processing, quantum metrology, and low field nuclear magnetic resonance.

Rebuilding of destroyed spin squeezing in noisy environments

We investigate the process of spin squeezing in a ferromagnetic dipolar spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate under the driven oneaxis twisting scheme, with emphasis on the detrimental effect of noisy environments (stray magnetic fields) which completely destroy the spin squeezing. By applying concatenated dynamical decoupling pulse sequences with a moderate bias magnetic field to suppress the effect of the noisy environments, we faithfully reconstruct the spin squeezing process under realistic experimental conditions. Our noise-resistant method is ready to be employed to generate the spin squeezed state in a dipolar spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate and paves a feasible way to the Heisenberg-limit quantum metrology

Efficient generation of many-body singlet states of spin-1 bosons in optical superlattices

We propose an efficient stepwise adiabatic merging (SAM) method to generate many-body singlet states in antiferromagnetic spin-1 bosons in concatenated optical superlattices with isolated double-well arrays, by adiabatically ramping up the double-well bias. With an appropriate choice of bias sweeping rate and magnetic field, the SAM protocol predicts a fidelity as high as 90% for a sixteen-body singlet state and even higher fidelities for smaller even-body singlet states. During their evolution, the spin-1 bosons exhibit interesting squeezing dynamics, manifested by an odd-even oscillation of the experimentally observable squeezing parameter. The generated many-body singlet states may find practical applications in precision measurement of magnetic field gradient and in quantum information processing.

Preserving coherent spin and squeezed spin states of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with rotary echoes

A challenge in precision measurement with squeezed spin state arises from the spin dephasing due to stray magnetic fields. To suppress such environmental noises, we employ a continuous driving protocol, rotary echo, to enhance the spin coherence of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in stray magnetic fields. Our analytical and numerical results show that the coherent and the squeezed spin states are preserved for a significantly long time, compared to the free induction decay time, if the condition $hτ= mπ$ is met with $h$ the pulse amplitude and $τ$ pulse width. In particular, both the spin average and the spin squeezing, including the direction and the amplitude, are simultaneously fixed for a squeezed spin state. Our results point out a practical way to implement quantum measurements based on a spin-1 condensate beyond the standard quantum limit.

Magnetic field induced dynamical instabilities in an anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We theoretically investigate four types of dynamical instability, in particular the periodic and oscillatory type $I_O$, in an anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in a nonzero magnetic field, by employing the coupled-mode theory and numerical method. This is in sharp contrast to the dynamical stability of the same system in zero field. Remarkably, a pattern transition from a periodic dynamical instability $I_O$ to a uniform one $III_O$ occurs at a critical magnetic field. All the four types of dynamical instability and the pattern transition are ready to be detected in $^{23}$Na condensates within the availability of the current experimental techniques.

Periodically modulated electromagnetically induced transparency

Phenomena of electromagnetically induced transparency (PEIT) may be interpreted by the Autler-Townes Splitting (ATS), where the coupled states are split by the coupling laser field, or by the quantum destructive interference (QDI), where the atomic phases caused by the coupling laser and the probe laser field cancel. We propose modulated experiments to explore the PEIT in an alternative way by periodically modulating the coupling and the probe fields in a ?-type three-level system. Our analytical and numerical results rule out the ATS interpretation and show that the QDI interpretation is more appropriate for the modulated experiments. The proposed experiments are readily implemented in atomic gases, artificial atoms in superconducting quantum devices, or three-level meta-atoms in meta-materials.

Coherent zero-field magnetization resonance in a dipolar spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

With current magnetic field shielding and high precision detection in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, it is possible to experimentally detect the low or zero field nonsecular dipolar dynamics. Here we analytically investigate the zero-field nonsecular magnetic dipolar interaction effect, with an emphasis on magnetization dynamics in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate under the single spatial mode approximation within the mean field theory. Due to the biaxial nature of the dipolar interaction, a novel resonance occurs in the condensate magnetization oscillation, contrast to the previous assumption of a conserved magnetization in strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, we propose a dynamical-decoupling detection method for such a resonance, which cancels the stray magnetic fields in experiments but restores the magnetization dynamics. Our results shed new lights on the dipolar systems and may find potential applications beyond cold atoms.
