Low-mass lepton pair production at large transverse momentum

We study the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass lepton pairs produced in hadronic scattering, using the perturbative QCD factorization approach. We argue that the distribution at large transverse momentum, $Q_T \gg Q$, with the pair's invariant mass $Q$ as low as $Q \sim Λ_{\mathrm{QCD}}$, can be systematically factorized into universal parton-to-lepton pair fragmentation functions, parton distributions, and perturbatively calculable partonic hard parts evaluated at a short distance scale $\sim {\cal O}(1/Q_T)$. We introduce a model for the input lepton pair fragmentation functions at a scale $μ_0\sim 1$ GeV, which are then evolved perturbatively to scales relevant at RHIC. Using the evolved fragmentation functions, we calculate the transverse momentum distributions in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. We also discuss the sensitivity of the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass lepton pairs to the gluon distribution.

Accessing tri-gluon correlations in the nucleon via the single spin asymmetry in open charm production

We calculate the single transverse-spin asymmetry for open charm production in $pp$ collisions within the QCD collinear factorization approach. We include contributions from both twist-three quark-gluon and tri-gluon correlation functions. We find that the quark-gluon correlation functions alone generate only a very small asymmetry for open charm production in the kinematic region of current interest at RHIC, so that the observation of any significant single-spin asymmetry would be a clear indication of the presence of tri-gluon correlations inside a polarized proton. We furthermore demonstrate that the tri-gluon contribution could be very different for the production of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons. These features make the single spin asymmetry in open charm production in polarized $pp$ collisions at RHIC an excellent probe of tri-gluon correlation functions.

Single-inclusive hadron production in transversely polarized p-p and pbar-p collisions with threshold resummation

We investigate the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections for single-inclusive high-p_T hadron production in collisions of transversely polarized hadrons. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Phenomenological results are given for pbar-p collisions at center-of-mass energy of 14.5 GeV and for p-p collisions at 62.4 GeV and at 10 GeV, which are relevant for possible experiments at the GSI-FAIR, RHIC and J-PARC facilities, respectively. We find significant enhancements of the spin-dependent and spin-averaged cross sections, but a decrease of the double-spin asymmetry A_TT.

Threshold Resummation for the Top Quark Charge Asymmetry

We study the QCD charge asymmetry in t\bar{t} production at the Tevatron. We investigate the role of higher orders in perturbation theory by considering the resummation of potentially large logarithmic corrections that arise near partonic threshold. This requires us to employ the rapidity-dependent anomalous dimension matrices that describe color mixing due to soft gluon emission in both quark- and gluon-initiated processes. The charge asymmetry appears directly in the resummed cross section at next-to-leading logarithm (NLL), and we find that the first-order expansion of the NLL resummed charge asymmetry reproduces the known fixed-order result for the asymmetry well. Beyond its lowest order, the asymmetric component of the cross section is enhanced by the same leading-logarithmic threshold corrections as the total cross section. As a result, the charge asymmetry is robust with respect to the higher-order perturbative corrections generated by threshold resummation. We observe that the asymmetry increases with pair mass and with scattering angle.

Global Analysis of Helicity Parton Densities and Their Uncertainties

We present a new analysis of the helicity parton distributions of the nucleon. The analysis takes into account the available data from inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering, as well as from polarized pp scattering at RHIC. For the first time, all theoretical calculations are performed fully at next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative QCD, using a method that allows to incorporate the NLO corrections in a very fast and efficient way in the analysis. We find evidence for a rather small gluon polarization in the nucleon, over a limited region of momentum fraction, and for interesting flavor patterns in the polarized sea.

Single-Inclusive Hadron Production in Polarized pp Scattering at Next-to-Leading Logarithmic Accuracy

We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for the process pp-> h X at high transverse momentum of the hadron h, when the initial protons are longitudinally polarized. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present numerical results for center-of-mass energies of 19.4 GeV, relevant for comparisons to data from the Fermilab E704 experiment, and 62.4 GeV, where preliminary data from RHIC have recently become available. We find significant enhancements of the spin-dependent cross sections, but a decrease of the double-spin asymmetry for the process. This effect is less pronounced at the higher energy.

On the Relation Between Mechanisms for Single-Transverse-Spin Asymmetries

Recent studies have shown that two widely-used mechanisms for single-transverse-spin asymmetries based on either twist-three contributions or on transverse-momentum-dependent (Sivers) parton distributions become identical in a kinematical regime of overlap. This was demonstrated for the so-called soft-gluon-pole and hard-pole contributions to the asymmetry associated with a particular quark-gluon correlation function in the nucleon. In this paper, using semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering as an example, we extend the study to the contributions by soft-fermion poles and by another independent twist-three correlation function. We find that these additional terms organize themselves in such a way as to maintain the mutual consistency of the two mechanisms for single-spin asymmetries.

Exploring the polarization of gluons in the nucleon

We give an overview of the current status of investigations of the polarization of gluons in the nucleon. We describe some of the physics of the spin-dependent gluon parton distribution and its phenomenology in high-energy polarized hadronic scattering. We also review the recent experimental results.

Hadronic Dijet Imbalance and Transverse-Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions

We compare several recent theoretical studies of the single transverse spin asymmetry in dijet-correlations at hadron colliders. We show that the results of these studies are all consistent. To establish this, we investigate in particular the two-gluon exchange contributions to the relevant initial and final state interactions in the context of a simplifying model. Overall, the results confirm that the dijet imbalance obeys at best a non-standard or "generalized" transverse-momentum-dependent factorization.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Hadronic Dijet Production

We study the single transverse-spin asymmetry for dijet production in hadronic collisions in both the collinear QCD factorization approach and the Brodsky-Hwang-Schmidt model. We show that a nonvanishing asymmetry is generated by both initial-state and final-state interactions, and that the final-state interactions dominate. We find that in the leading kinematic region where the transverse momentum imbalance of the two jets, q_\perp = P_{1\perp}+P_{2\perp}, is much less than the momentum of either jet, the contribution from the lowest non-trivial perturbative order to both the spin-averaged and the spin-dependent dijet cross sections can be factorized into a hard part that is a function only of the averaged jet momentum P_\perp = (P_{1\perp}-P_{2\perp})/2, and perturbatively generated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions. We show that the spin asymmetry at this non-trivial perturbative order can be described by the TMD parton distributions defined in either semi-inclusive DIS or the Drell-Yan process. We derive the same hard parts from both the collinear factorization approach and in the context of the Brodsky-Hwang-Schmidt model, verifying that they are not sensitive to details of the factorized long distance physics.

Resummed Cross Section for Jet Production at Hadron Colliders

We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the single-inclusive jet cross section at hadron colliders. The corrections we address arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction, when the incoming partons have just enough energy to produce the high-transverse-momentum final state. The structure of the resulting logarithmic corrections is known to depend crucially on the treatment of the invariant mass of the produced jet at threshold. We allow the jet to have a non-vanishing mass at threshold, which most closely corresponds to the situation in experiment. Matching our results to available semi-analytical next-to-leading-order calculations, we derive resummed results valid to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present numerical results for the resummation effects at Tevatron and RHIC energies.

Asymmetric Di-jet Production in Polarized Hadronic Collisions

Using the collinear QCD factorization approach, we study the single-transverse-spin dependent cross section Delta sigma(S_perp) for the hadronic production of two jets of momenta P_1=P+q/2 and P_2=-P+q/2. We consider the kinematic region where the transverse components of the momentum vectors satisfy P_perp >> q_perp >> Lambda_QCD. For the case of initial-state gluon radiation, we show that at the leading power in q_perp/P_perp and at the lowest non-trivial perturbative order, the dependence of Delta sigma(S_perp) on q_perp decouples from that on P_perp, so that the cross section can be factorized into a hard part that is a function only of the single scale P_perp, and into perturbatively generated transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions with transverse momenta k_perp = O(q_perp).

Single transverse-spin asymmetry in high transverse momentum pion production in pp collisions

We study the single-spin (left-right) asymmetry in single-inclusive pion production in hadronic scattering. This asymmetry is power-suppressed in the transverse momentum of the produced pion and can be analyzed in terms of twist-three parton correlation functions in the proton. We present new calculations of the corresponding partonic hard-scattering functions that include the so-called "non-derivative" contributions not previously considered in the literature. We find a remarkably simple structure of the results. We also present a brief phenomenological study of the spin asymmetry, taking into account data from fixed-target scattering and also the latest information available from RHIC. We make additional predictions that may be tested experimentally at RHIC.

Drell-Yan Lepton Angular Distribution at Small Transverse Momentum

We investigate the dependence of the Drell-Yan cross section on lepton polar and azimuthal angles, as generated by the lowest-order QCD annihilation and Compton processes. We focus in particular on the azimuthal-angular distributions, which are of the form cos(phi) and cos(2phi). At small transverse momentum q_T of the lepton pair, q_T << Q, with Q the pair mass, these terms are known to be suppressed relative to the phi-independent part of the Drell-Yan cross section by one or two powers of the transverse momentum. Nonetheless, as we show, like the phi-independent part they are subject to large logarithmic corrections, whose precise form however depends on the reference frame chosen. These logarithmic contributions ultimately require resummation to all orders in the strong coupling. We discuss the potential effects of resummation on the various angular terms in the cross section and on the Lam-Tung relation.

Q_T-Resummation for Polarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We consider cross sections for various combinations of the polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the process $ep\to eπX$ for the typical kinematics in the COMPASS experiment. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the corresponding cross sections and their spin asymmetry.

Crossed Threshold Resummation

We show that certain general properties of threshold and joint resummations in Drell-Yan cross sections hold as well for their crossed analogs in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and double-inclusive leptonic annihilation. We show that all plus-distribution corrections near threshold show the same structure, and are determined to all logarithmic order by two anomalous dimensions, one of which is a generalization of the D-term previously derived in Drell-Yan. We also discuss the possibility of universality in power corrections implied by the resummation.

Resummation for Polarized Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at Small Transverse Momentum

We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We consider cross sections for various combinations of polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the processes $lp\to lπX$ with longitudinally polarized leptons and protons. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the corresponding cross sections and their spin asymmetry. Our results should be relevant for ongoing studies in the COMPASS experiment at CERN, and for future experiments at the proposed eRHIC collider at BNL.
