Single-Transverse Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering. We derive the leading contribution to the asymmetry at moderate transverse momentum $P_{h\perp}$ of the produced hadron in terms of twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions, and compare with the approach based on the factorization at fixed transverse momentum involving the asymmetric transverse-momentum and spin-dependent quark distribution. We verify that the two approaches yield identical results in this regime. By a comparison with our earlier calculations for the single-spin asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process we recover the well-established process-dependence of the time-reversal-odd transverse-momentum-dependent quark distributions that generate single-spin phenomena.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Drell-Yan Production at Large and Moderate Transverse Momentum

We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process. We consider production of the lepton pair at large transverse momentum, $q_\perp\sim Q$, where $Q$ is the pair's mass. The spin asymmetry is then of higher twist and may be generated by twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions. Expanding the result for $q_\perp\ll Q$, we make contact with the transverse-momentum-dependent QCD factorization involving the so-called Sivers functions. We find that the two mechanisms, quark-gluon correlations on one hand and the Sivers effect on the other, contain the same physics in this region. This ties the two together and imposes an important constraint on phenomenological studies of single transverse spin asymmetries.

A Unified Picture for Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries in Hard Processes

Using Drell-Yan pair production as an example, we explore the relation between two well-known mechanisms for single transverse-spin asymmetries in hard processes: twist-three quark-gluon correlations when the pair's transverse momentum is large, $q_\perp \gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$, and time-reversal-odd and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions when $q_\perp$ is much less than the pair's mass. We find that although the two mechanisms have their own domain of validity, they describe the same physics in the kinematic region where they overlap. This unifies the two mechanisms and imposes an important constraint on phenomenological studies of single spin asymmetries.

QCD Corrections to Dilepton Production near Partonic Threshold in proton-antiproton Scattering

We present a recent study of the QCD corrections to dilepton production near partonic threshold in transversely polarized \bar{p}p scattering. We analyze the role of the higher-order perturbative QCD corrections in terms of the available fixed-order contributions as well as of all-order soft-gluon resummations for the kinematical regime of proposed experiments at GSI-FAIR. We find that perturbative corrections are large for both unpolarized and polarized cross sections, but that the spin asymmetries are stable. The role of the far infrared region of the momentum integral in the resummed exponent and the effect of the NNLL resummation are briefly discussed.

Threshold Resummation for W-Boson Production at RHIC

We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for the process pp -> W^+- X at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). At RHIC, polarized protons are available, and spin asymmetries for this process will be used for precise measurements of the up and down quark and anti-quark distributions in the proton. The corrections arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction and are associated with soft-gluon emission. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, for the rapidity-differential cross section. We find that resummation leads to relatively moderate effects on the cross sections and spin asymmetries.

Study of the Fundamental Structure of Matter with an Electron-Ion Collider

We present an overview of the scientific opportunities that would be offered by a high-energy electron-ion collider. We discuss the relevant physics of polarized and unpolarized electron-proton collisions and of electron-nucleus collisions. We also describe the current accelerator and detector plans for a future electron-ion collider.

Single-Transverse Spin Asymmetries: From DIS to Hadronic Collisions

We study single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with transversely polarized target. Based on the QCD factorization approach, we consider Sivers and Collins contributions to the asymmetries. We fit simple parameterizations for the Sivers and Collins functions to the recent HERMES data, and compare to results from COMPASS. Using the fitted parameterizations for the Sivers functions, we predict the single transverse spin asymmetries for various processes in $pp$ collisions at RHIC, including the Drell-Yan process and angular correlations in dijet and jet-plus-photon production. These asymmetries are found to be sizable at forward rapidities

Threshold resummation for the prompt-photon cross section revisited

We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for the process pp->gamma X at high transverse momentum of the photon. These corrections arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction and are associated with soft-gluon emission. We especially focus on the resummation effects for the contribution to the cross section where the photon is produced in jet fragmentation. Previous calculations in perturbation theory at fixed-order have established that this contribution is a subdominant part of the cross section. We find, however, that it is subject to much larger resummation effects than the direct (non-fragmentation) piece and therefore appears to be a significant contribution in the fixed-target regime, not much suppressed with respect to the direct part. Inclusion of threshold resummation for the fragmentation piece leads to some improvement in comparisons between theoretical calculations and experimental data.

Dilepton production near partonic threshold in transversely polarized proton-antiproton collisions

It has recently been suggested that collisions of transversely polarized protons and antiprotons at the GSI could be used to determine the nucleon's transversity densities from measurements of the double-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process. We analyze the role of higher-order perturbative QCD corrections in this kinematic regime, in terms of the available fixed-order contributions as well as of all-order soft-gluon resummations. We find that the combined perturbative corrections to the individual unpolarized and transversely polarized cross sections are large. We trace these large enhancements to soft gluon emission near partonic threshold, and we suggest that with a physically-motivated cut-off enhancements beyond lowest order are moderated relative to resummed perturbation theory, but still significant. The unpolarized dilepton cross section for the GSI kinematics may therefore provide information on the relation of perturbative and nonperturbative dynamics in hadronic scattering. The spin asymmetry turns out to be rather robust, relatively insensitive to higher orders, resummation, and the cut-offs.

Threshold Resummation for the Inclusive-Hadron Cross-Section in pp Collisions

We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for the process pp->h X at high transverse momentum of the hadron h. These corrections arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction and are associated with soft-gluon emission. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present numerical results for the fixed-target regime and find enhancements over the next-to-leading order cross section, which significantly improve the agreement between theoretical predictions and data. We also apply the resummation for RHIC kinematics and find that subleading terms appear to play a rather important role here.

Recoil and Power Corrections in High-x_T Direct-Photon Production

We study a class of nonperturbative corrections to single-inclusive photon cross sections at measured transverse momentum p_T, in the large-x_T limit. We develop an extension of the joint (threshold and transverse momentum) resummation formalism, appropriate for large x_T, in which there are no kinematic singularities associated with recoil, and for which matching to fixed order and to threshold resummation at next-to-leading logarithm (NLL) is straightforward. Beyond NLL, we find contributions that can be attributed to recoil from initial state radiation. Associated power corrections occur as inverse powers of p_T^2 and are identified from the infrared structure of integrals over the running coupling. They have significant energy dependence and decrease from typical fixed-target to collider energies. Energy conservation, which is incorporated into joint resummation, moderates the effects of perturbative recoil and power corrections for large x_T.

Joint resummation in electroweak boson production

We present a phenomenological application of the joint resummation formalism to electroweak annihilation processes at measured boson momentum Q_T. This formalism simultaneously resums at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy large threshold and recoil corrections to partonic scattering. We invert the impact parameter transform using a previously described analytic continuation procedure. This leads to a well-defined, resummed perturbative cross section for all nonzero Q_T, which can be compared to resummation carried out directly in Q_T space. From the structure of the resummed expressions, we also determine the form of nonperturbative corrections to the cross section and implement these into our analysis. We obtain a good description of the transverse momentum distribution of Z bosons produced at the Tevatron collider.

Collinear splitting, parton evolution and the strange-quark asymmetry of the nucleon in NNLO QCD

We consider the collinear limit of QCD amplitudes at one-loop order, and their factorization properties directly in colour space. These results apply to the multiple collinear limit of an arbitrary number of QCD partons, and are a basic ingredient in many higher-order computations. In particular, we discuss the triple collinear limit and its relation to flavour asymmetries in the QCD evolution of parton densities at three loops. As a phenomenological consequence of this new effect, and of the fact that the nucleon has non-vanishing quark valence densities, we study the perturbative generation of a strange--antistrange asymmetry $s(x)-\bar{s}(x)$ in the nucleon's sea.

QCD Hard Scattering and the Sign of the Spin Asymmetry A_LL^pi

Recent preliminary PHENIX data are consistent with a negative and sizable longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL^pi for pi^0 production at moderate transverse momentum p_perp \simeq 1 - 4 GeV and central rapidity. By means of a systematic investigation of the relevant degrees of freedom we show that the perturbative QCD framework at leading power in p_perp produces at best a very small negative asymmetry in this kinematic range.

Perturbative generation of a strange-quark asymmetry in the nucleon

We point out that perturbative evolution in QCD at three loops generates a strange-antistrange asymmetry s(x)-sbar(x) in the nucleon's sea just from the fact that the nucleon has non-vanishing up and down quark valence densities. The recently computed three-loop splitting functions allow for an estimate of this effect. We find that a fairly sizable asymmetry may be generated. Results for analogous asymmetries in the heavy-quark sector are also presented.

Asymmetric jet correlations in p p^\uparrow scattering

We propose that back-to-back correlations in azimuthal angle of jets produced in collisions of unpolarized with transversely polarized proton beams could be used to determine Sivers functions. The corresponding single-spin asymmetry is not power-suppressed, but is subject to Sudakov suppression. We present estimates of the asymmetry (without and with Sudakov effects) for RHIC at jet transverse momenta of ~10 GeV and show that it may reach a few per cent or more and could provide access to the gluon Sivers function.
