Quasi-magnetism of sterile dark matter with photonic portal

We develop farther a simple model of cold dark matter consisting of sterile spin-1/2 fermions (sterinos), whose mass is generated by a nonzero vacuum expectation value of a field of sterile scalars (sterons). In this model, the sterile world of sterinos and sterons is conjectured to communicate with the familiar Standard Model world not only through gravity, but also through a photonic portal provided by a very weak effective interaction of the electromagnetic field with sterino and steron fields. Then, an extra, finite renormalization leading from the primary bare electric charge to a new bare electric charge appears spontaneously. Due to the photonic portal, the cold dark matter consisting of sterinos displays a phenomenon of quasi-magnetism, what means that it can interact effectively with cosmic (and laboratory) magnetic fields.

A Hidden Valley model of cold dark matter with photonic portal

In the discussed model, the cold dark matter consists of Dirac spin-1/2 fermions, sterile from all Standard Model charges, where masses are generated by a nonzero vacuum expectation value of a field of scalar bosons, also assumed to be sterile. For convenience, these sterile particles have beeen called sterinos and sterons, respectively. It has been conjectured that our sterile world of sterinos and sterons can communicate with the familiar Standard Model world not only through gravity, but also through a photonic portal provided by a very weak effective interaction involving the electromagnetic field F_{μν} = \partial_μA_ν- \partial_νA_μcoupled to the sterino and steron fields.

Photonic portal to the sterile world of cold dark matter

We assume that the cold dark matter consists of spin-1/2 and spin-0 particles described by a bispinor field ψand a scalar field ϕ, sterile from all Standard Model charges (in contrast, neutralinos, supersymmetric candidates for cold dark matter, are not sterile from weak Standard Model charges). We propose, however, that such a sterile world can contact with our Standard Model world not only through gravity but also through a portal provided by photons coupled to sterile particles by means of two very weak effective interactions -(f/M^2)ϕF^{μν}ϕF_{μν} and -(f'/M^2) (\barψσ^{μν} ψ)ϕF_{μν}, where M is a very large mass scale and f and f' are dimensionless coupling constants. Thus, in our picture, the electromagnetic field F_{μν} - as the only Standard Model field - participates in both worlds, providing a nongravitational link between them (other than the popular supersymmetric weak interaction, active in the case of neutralinos). In consequence, there appears a tiny quasi-magnetic correction to the conventional electromagnetic current (described in Appendix A).

Towards a realistic neutrino mass formula: part two

A two-parameter neutrino mass formula is described, giving a moderately hierarchical spectrum m_1 < m_2 < m_3 consistent with the experimental estimates of Delta m^2_{21} and Delta m^2_{32}. The formula follows from a three-parameter empirical neutrino mass formula through imposing a parameter constraint and leads to a very simple neutrino mass sum rule m_3 = 18 m_2 - 48 m_1. Some alternative parameter constraints, used tentatively to eliminate one of three parameters, are compared.

A satisfactory empirical mass sum rule for charged leptons

In the framework of a mass formula proposed previously (transforming in a specific way three free parameters into three masses), a simple empirical sum rule for three charged-lepton masses is found, predicting m_τ= 1776.9926 MeV, when the experimental values of m_e and m_μare used as an input. The experimental value to be compared with is m_τ= 1776.99^{+0.29}_{-0.26} MeV. This satisfactory sum rule (equivalent to a simple parameter constraint in the mass formula) is linear in masses and involves integers as its coefficients. The author believes that such a simple and precise mass sum rule for charged leptons may help in the process of developing realistic models for mass spectra of fundamental fermions. In the second part of the paper, another equivalent parametrization of the charged-lepton mass formula is described, corresponding to an oscillatory picture of their mass matrix, where two matrices appear playing the role of annihilation and creation operators in the generation space.

Constraint of parameters in a neutrino mass formula

A search for the parameter constraint in the three-parameter empirical mass formula proposed recently for active neutrinos is described. Without any parameter constraint the formula is a formal transformation of three free parameters into three neutrino masses or vice versa, giving no numerical predictions for the masses. But, this is a very special transformation, providing some specific suggestions as to its parameters, when it is confronted with the present, unfortunately incomplete, experimental data. If the parameters become constrainted, then there appear some numerical predictions for the neutrino masses, subject to experimental verification (as far as it is or will be possible).

Towards a realistic neutrino mass formula

A new option of parameter constraint is described for the recently proposed neutrino mass formula involving primarily three free parameters. The option implies the vanishing of a part of mass formula for the lowest mass neutrino, the part which may - in an intuitive model - be identified with its formal "intrinsic selfenergy". However, its actual mass induced then by another part of mass formula is considerable. In this option, our neutrino mass formula predicts all three neutrino masses as m_1 \sim 2.5 x 10^{-3} eV, m_2 \sim 9.3 x 10^{-3} eV and m_3 \sim 5.0 x 10^{-2} eV, when two experimental estimates Δm^2_{21} \sim 8.0 x 10^{-5} eV^2 and Δm^2_{32} \sim 2.4 x 10^{-3} eV^2 are applied as an input.

New structure for the off-diagonal part of neutrino effective mass matrix

Two 3x3 matrices playing the role of annihilation and creation operators in the neutrino-flavor space of nu_e, nu_mu, nu_tau are applied to construct the off-diagonal part of neutrino effective mass matrix M. The construction leads to a new relation between two off-diagonal elements M_{e mu} and M_{mu tau} of M. In the case of tribimaximal neutrino mixing, this relation implies a new mass sum rule for nu_1, nu_2, nu_3: m_3 = eta m_2 - (eta - 1)m_1. In a plausible option consistent with the charged-lepton mass spectrum, one gets eta \equiv (2/3)(4 sqrt{3}+1) = 5.28547. Then, {Delta m^2_{32}}/{Delta m^2_{21}} = eta^2 -1 = 26.9362 if m_1 = 0, what predicts Delta m^2_{32} \sim 2.2 x 10^{-3} eV^2 when the input Delta m^2_{21} \sim 8.0 x 10^{-5} eV^2 is used.

Constructing the off-diagonal part of active-neutrino mass matrix from annihilation and creation matrices in neutrino-generation space

The off-diagonal part of the active-neutrino mass matrix is constructed from two $3\times 3$ matrices playing the role of annihilation and creation matrices acting in the neutrino-generation space of $ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ$. The construction leads to a new relation, $M_{μτ} = 4\sqrt{3} M_{e μ} $, which predicts in the case of tribimaximal neutrino mixing that $m_3 - m_1 = η(m_2 - m_1)$ with $η= 5.28547$. Then, the maximal possible value of ${Δm^2_{32}}/{Δm^2_{21}}$ is equal to $η^2 -1 = 26.9362$ and gives $m_1 = 0$. With the experimental estimate ${Δm^2_{21}}\sim 8.0\times 10^{-5} {\rm eV}^2$, this maximal value, if realized, predicts $Δm^2_{32} \sim 2.2\times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^2$, near to the popular experimental estimation $Δm^2_{32} \sim 2.4\times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^2$.

Mass formula for leptons and quarks as suggested by generalized Dirac's square root

Basing on the formalism of generalized Dirac equation introduced by the author already many years ago, we suggest a model of formal intrinsic interactions within leptons and quarks of three generations. In this model, the leptons and quarks are treated as some intrinsic composites of algebraic partons, the latter being identified with Dirac bispinor indices appearing in the generalized Dirac equation. This intrinsic model implies a universal mass formula for leptons and quarks of three generations that has been recently proposed on an essentially empirical level.

A universal shape of empirical mass formula for all leptons and quarks

A specific universal shape of empirical mass formula is proposed for all leptons $ν_1, ν_2, ν_3$ and $e^-, μ^-, τ^- $ as well as all quarks $u, c, t$ and $d, s, b$ of three generations, parametrized by three free constants $ μ, ε, ξ$ assuming four different triplets of values. Four such triplets of parameter values are determined or estimated from the present data. Mass spectra in the four cases are related to each other by shifting the triplet of parameters $ μ, ε, ξ$. For charged leptons $ξ\simeq 0$ (but probably $ξ\neq 0$). If for them $ξ$ is put to be exactly 0, then $m_τ= 1776.80$ MeV is predicted after the input of experimental $m_e$ and $m_μ$ (the central value of experimental $m_τ= 1776.99^{+0.29}_{-0.26}$ MeV corresponds to $ ξ=1.8\times 10^{-3}\neq 0$). For neutrinos $1/ξ\simeq 0$ (but $1/ξ\neq 0$ in the case of normal hierarchy $m^2_{ν_1} \ll m^2_{ν_2} \ll m^2_{ν_3}$). If for neutrinos $1/ξ$ is conjectured to be exactly 0, then $(m_{ν_1}, m_{ν_2}, m_{ν_3}) \sim (1.5, 1.2, 5.1)\times 10^{-2}$ eV are predicted after the input of experimental estimates $|m^2_{ν_2} - m^2_{ν_1}| \sim 8.0\times 10^{-5} {\rm eV}^2$ and $|m^2_{ν_3} - m^2_{ν_2}| \sim 2.4\times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^2$. Thus, the mass ordering of neutrino states 1 and 2 is then inverted, while the position of state 3 is normal.

A very simple empirical neutrino mass formula

A very simple empirical neutrino mass formula is found, implying the mass proportion $m_1 : m_2 : m_3 = 1 : 4 : 24(1-β^2)$. For the value $β= (5-1)(5-3)/5^2 = 8/25$ the formula predicts precisely $Δm^2_{21} \sim 8.0\times 10^{-5} {\rm eV}^2$ in consistency with the experiment, when the input of experimental estimate $Δm^2_{32} \sim 2.4\times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^2$ is applied. Plausible interpretation of numerical elements building up this formula is briefly described.

Can the nondiagonal charged-lepton mass matrix improve the tripartite neutrino mixing?

It is shown that the off-diagonal corrections in a realistic charged-lepton mass matrix, introduced previously by the author, cannot improve much the tripartite neutrino mixing. In fact, $s^2_{12} = 1/3 - 0.005 = 0.328 \simeq 1/3 $ for $s^2_{12}$ improved in this way, while $s^2_{12 {\rm exp}} = 0.314 = 1/3 - 0.019$ for the central value of experimental $s^2_{12 {\rm exp}}$.

Predicting the tauon mass as well as the ratio of electron and muon masses

Treating the Koide equation and another efficient charged-lepton mass formula (having the form of a mass sum rule) as a system of two mathematically independent algebraic equations for three charged-lepton masses, we predict the tauon mass as well as the ratio of electron and muon masses, both consistent with experiment.

What if the LSND effect gets a considerably smaller amplitude?

The possibility is considered that the verdict of the ongoing MiniBooNE neutrino experiment will favor neither of the contesting sides, stating in fact that the LSND effect with the original oscillation amplitude is not confirmed, but a new LSND effect with a considerably smaller amplitude is found (or, at least, strongly suggested). Then, in the framework of neutrino oscillations, the presence in Nature of hypothetical light sterile neutrinos (mixing with three active neutrinos with a weak strength) will be unambiguously suggested by post-MiniBooNE neutrino data (unless the credible CPT invariance is seriously violated). In the new situation, the 3+1 neutrino models may work all right. The same is true also for simple 3+2 neutrino models. For illustration of this potential developement, the simplest 3+2 model is briefly discussed.

The simplest 3+2 model with two light sterile neutrinos

The simplest 3+2 neutrino model is described, where two light sterile neutrinos mix very weakly with three active neutrinos and mutually do not mix at all, while the mass-squared scale of the possible LSND effect is provided by m_5^2 - m^2_4 (ν_4 and ν_5 being two additional mass neutrinos connected with the existence of two sterile neutrinos ν_s and ν_{s'}. This 3+2 model is not better for explaining the LSND effect than the simplest 3+1 neutrino model, where one light sterile neutrino mixes very weakly with three active neutrinos, while the mass-squared scale of the possible LSND effect is given by m_4^2 - m^2_1 (ν_4 denoting an additional mass neutrino existing due to a sterile neutrino ν_s). However, a small LSND effect with amplitude of the order O($10^{-3}$) is not excluded by the present (pre-MiniBooNE) data.

Intrinsically acting Pauli principle as the origin of three Standard Model generations of leptons and quarks

We turn back to the hypothesis that the Pauli principle, acting intrinsically within leptons and quarks, is the origin of their three generations. The adequate formalism is based on the generalized Dirac equations arising (in the interaction-free case) from the Klein-Gordon equations through the familiar squared-root procedure (but applied in the generic way). This leads to the existence of {\it additional} Dirac bispinor indices decoupled from the Standard Model gauge fields, thus nonobserved in these fields and, in consequence, {\it not distinguishable} from each other. They are treated as dynamical degrees of freedom obeying the Pauli principle along with Fermi statistics. Then, they produce within leptons and quarks the total additional spin equal to zero, and cause the existence of {\it three and only three} generations of Standard Model leptons and quarks. In the second part of the note we discuss the role of the new generation-weighting factors in building up the spectra of charged leptons and neutrinos.
