Spin-current autocorrelations from single pure-state propagation

We demonstrate that the concept of quantum typicality allows for significant progress in the study of real-time spin dynamics and transport in quantum magnets. To this end, we present a numerical analysis of the spin-current autocorrelation function of the antiferromagnetic and anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain as inferred from propagating only a single pure state, randomly chosen as a "typical" representative of the statistical ensemble. Comparing with existing time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) data, we show that typicality is fulfilled extremely well, consistent with an error of our approach, which is perfectly under control and vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. In the long-time limit, our results provide for a new benchmark for the enigmatic spin Drude weight, which we obtain from chains as long as L=33 sites, i.e., from Hilbert spaces of dimensions almost O(10^4) larger than in existing exact-diagonalization studies.

Raman scattering in a Heisenberg S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the anisotropic triangular lattice

We investigate the two-magnon Raman scattering from an anisotropic S=1/2 triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4. We find that the Raman response is very sensitive to magnon-magnon interactions and to scattering geometries, a feature that is in remarkable contrast with the polarization-independent Raman signal from the isotropic triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Since a spin-liquid ground state gives rise to a similar rotationally invariant Raman response, our results on the polarization dependence of the scattering spectrum suggest that Raman spectroscopy provides a useful probe, complementary to neutron scattering, of the ground-state properties of Cs2CuCl4, particularly whether the time-reversal symmetry is broken in the ground state.

Thermal drag in spin ladders coupled to phonons

We study the spin-phonon drag effect in the magnetothermal transport of spin-1/2 two-leg ladders coupled to lattice degrees of freedom. Using a bond operator description for the triplon excitations of the spin ladder and magnetoelastic coupling to acoustic phonons, we employ the time convolutionless projection operator method to derive expressions for the diagonal and off-diagonal thermal conductivities of the coupled two-component triplon-phonon system. We find that for magnetoelastic coupling strengths and diagonal scattering rates relevant to copper-oxide spin-ladders the drag heat conductivity can be of similar magnitude as the diagonal triplon heat conductivity. Moreover, we show that the drag and diagonal conductivities display very similar overall temperature dependences. Finally, the drag conductivity is shown to be rather susceptible to external magnetic fields.

Highly Dispersive Scattering From Defects In Non-Collinear Magnets

We demonstrate that point-like defects in non-collinear magnets give rise to a highly dispersive structure in the magnon scattering, violating a standard paradigm of its momentum independence. For a single impurity spin coupled to a prototypical non-collinear antiferromagnet we find that the resolvent is dominated by a distinct dispersive structure with its momentum-dependence set by the magnon dispersion and shifted by the ordering vector. This feature is a consequence of umklapp scattering off the impurity-induced spin texture, which arises due to the non-collinear ground state of the host system. Detailed results for the staggered and uniform magnetization of this texture as well as the T-matrix from numerical linear spin-wave theory are presented.

Spin transport in the XXZ chain at finite temperature and momentum

We investigate the role of momentum for the transport of magnetization in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain above the isotropic point at finite temperature and momentum. Using numerical and analytical approaches, we analyze the autocorrelations of density and current and observe a finite region of the Brillouin zone with diffusive dynamics below a cut-off momentum, and a diffusion constant independent of momentum and time, which scales inversely with anisotropy. Lowering the temperature over a wide range, starting from infinity, the diffusion constant is found to increase strongly while the momentum space cut-off for diffusion decreases. Above the cut-off momentum diffusion breaks down completely.

Series Expansion Analysis of a Frustrated Four-Spin-Tube

We study the magnetism of a frustrated four-leg spin-1/2 ladder with transverse periodic boundary conditions: the frustrated four-spin tube (FFST). Using a combination of series expansion (SE), based on the continuous unitary transformation method and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) we analyze the ground-state, the one-, and the two-particle excitations in the regime of strong rung-coupling. We find several marked differences of the FFST with respect to standard two-leg ladders. First we show that frustration destabilizes the spin-gap phase of the FFST which is adiabatically connected to the limit of decoupled rung singlets, leading to a first order quantum phase transition at finite inter-rung coupling. Second, we show that apart from the well-know triplon branch of spin-ladders, the FFST sustains additional elementary excitations, including a singlon, and additional triplons. Finally we find, that in the two-particle sector the FFST exhibits collective (anti)bound states similar to two-leg ladders, however with a different ordering of the spin-quantum numbers. We show that frustration has significant impact on the FFST leading to a flattening of the ground-state energy landscape, a mass-enhancement of the excitations, and to a relative enhancement of the (anti)binding strength. Where possible we use DMRG to benchmark the findings from our SE calculations, showing excellent agreement.

Quantum Phases of the Planar Antiferromagnetic J_1-J_2-J_3 Heisenberg-Model

We present results of a complementary analysis of the frustrated planar J_1-J_2-J_3 spin-1/2 quantum-antiferromagnet. Using dynamical functional renormalization group, high-order coupled cluster calculations, and series expansion based on the flow equation method, we have calculated generalized momentum resolved susceptibilities, the ground state energy, the magnetic order parameter, and the elementary excitation gap. From these we determine a quantum phase diagram which shows a large window of a quantum paramagnetic phase situated between the Neel, spiral and collinear states, which are present already in the classical J_1-J_2-J_3 antiferromagnet. Our findings are consistent with substantial plaquette correlations in the quantum paramagnetic phase. The extent of the quantum paramagnetic region is found to be in satisfying agreement between the three different approaches we have employed.

Thermal drag revisited: Boltzmann versus Kubo

The effect of mutual drag between phonons and spin excitations on the thermal conductivity of a quantum spin system is discussed. We derive general expression for the drag component of the thermal current using both Boltzmann equation approach and Kubo linear-response formalism to leading order in the spin-phonon coupling. We demonstrate that aside from higher-order corrections which appear in the Kubo formalism both approaches yield identical results for the drag thermal conductivity. We discuss the range of applicability of our result and provide a generalization of our consideration to the cases of fermionic excitations and to anomalous forms of boson-phonon coupling. Several asymptotic regimes of our findings relevant to realistic situations are highlighted.

Hydrodynamic Limit for the Spin Dynamics of the Heisenberg Chain

We show that Quantum-Monte-Carlo calculations of the dynamic structure factor of the isotropic spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain at intermediate temperatures corroborate a picture of diffusive spin dynamics at finite frequencies in the low-energy long wave-length limit and are in good agreement with recent predictions for this by J. Sirker, R. G. Pereira, and I. Affleck [arXiv:0906.1978v1].

Plaquette Order in the J1-J2-J3 model: a series expansion analysis

Series expansion based on the flow equation method is employed to study the zero temperature properties of the spin-1/2 J1-J2-J3 antiferromagnet in two dimensions. Starting from the exact limit of decoupled plaquettes in a particular generalized J1-J2-J3 model we analyze the evolution of the ground state energy and the elementary triplet excitations in powers of all three inter-plaquette couplings up to fifth order. We find the plaquette phase to remain stable over a wide range of exchange couplings and to connect adiabatically up to the case of the plain J1-J2-J3 model, however not to the J1-J2 model at J3=0. Besides confirming the existence of such a phase, recently predicted by Mambrini, et al. [Phys. Rev. B 74, 144422 [2006)], we estimate its extent by Dlog-Pade analysis of the critical lines that result from closure of the triplet gap.

Anomalous frequency and intensity scaling of collective and local modes in a coupled spin tetrahedron system

We report on the magnetic excitation spectrum of the coupled spin tetrahedral system Cu$_{2}$Te$_{2}$O$_{5}$Cl$_{2}$ using Raman scattering on single crystals. The transition to an ordered state at T$_{N}^{Cl}$=18.2 K evidenced from thermodynamic data leads to the evolution of distinct low-energy magnetic excitations superimposed by a broad maximum. These modes are ascribed to magnons with different degree of localization and a two-magnon continuum. Two of the modes develop a substantial energy shift with decreasing temperature similar to the order parameter of other Neel ordered systems. The other two modes show only a negligible temperature dependence and dissolve above the ordering temperature in a continuum of excitations at finite energies. These observations point to a delicate interplay of magnetic inter- and intra-tetrahedra degrees of freedom and an importance of singlet fluctuations in describing a spin dynamics.

Raman scattering in a Heisenberg {\boldmath $S=1/2$} antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

We investigate two-magnon Raman scattering from the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice, considering both the effect of renormalization of the one-magnon spectrum by 1/S corrections and final-state magnon-magnon interactions. The bare Raman intensity displays two peaks related to one-magnon van-Hove singularities. We find that 1/S self-energy corrections to the one-magnon spectrum strongly modify this intensity profile. The central Raman-peak is significantly enhanced due to plateaus in the magnon dispersion, the high frequency peak is suppressed due to magnon damping, and the overall spectral support narrows considerably. Additionally we investigate final-state interactions by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation to $O(1/S)$. In contrast to collinear antiferromagnets, the non-collinear nature of the magnetic ground state leads to an irreducible magnon scattering which is retarded and non-separable already to lowest order. We show that final-state interactions lead to a rather broad Raman-continuum centered around approximately twice the 'roton'-energy. We also discuss the dependence on the scattering geometry.

Static Holes in the Geometrically Frustrated Bow Tie Ladder

We investigate the doping of a geometrically frustrated spin ladder with static holes by a complementary approach using exact diagonalization and quantum dimers. Results for thermodynamic properties, the singlet density of states, the hole-binding energy and the spin correlations will be presented. For the undoped systems the ground state is non-degenerate, with translationally invariant nearest-neighbor spin correlations. In the doped case, we find that static holes polarize their vicinity by a localization of singlets in order to reduce the frustration. This polarization induces short range repulsive forces between two holes and an oscillatory behavior of the long range two-hole energy. For most quantities investigated, we find very good agreement between the quantum dimer approach and the results from exact diagonalization.

Order from Disorder in the Two-Dimensional Kondo-Necklace

We analyze the effects of site-dilution disorder on the thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional Kondo necklace using finite-temperature stochastic series expansion. Results will be discussed for the dependence on dilution concentration, temperature, and Kondo exchange-coupling strength of the uniform susceptibility, the staggered structure factor, and the Chakravarty-Halperin-Nelson ratio. Dilution is shown to induce effective free-spin clusters in the gapped phase of the clean system with a low-temperature Curie constant renormalized below 1/4. Furthermore, dilution is demonstrated to generate antiferromagnetic order in the quantum disordered phase of the clean system, i.e. order-from-disorder. In turn, the quantum critical point of the clean system, separating an antiferromagnetic from a paramagnetic dimerized state at a critical Kondo exchange-coupling strength $J_{c}\approx1.4$ is suppressed. Finally, speculations on a renormalized classical behavior in the dilution induced ordered phase are stated.

Investigation of the oxohalogenide Cu4Te5O12Cl4 with weakly coupled Cu(II) tetrahedra

The crystal structure of the copper(II) tellurium(IV) oxochloride Cu$_{4}$Te$_{5}$O$_{12}$Cl$_{4}$ (Cu-45124) is composed of weakly coupled tetrahedral Cu clusters and shows crystallographic similarities with the intensively investigated compound Cu$_{2}$Te$_{2}$O$_{5}$X$_{2}$, with X~=~Cl, Br (Cu-2252). It differs from the latter by a larger separation of the tetrahedra within the crystallographic ab plane, that allows a more direct assignment of important inter-tetrahedra exchange paths and the existence of an inversion center. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat evidence antiferromagnetic, frustrated correlations of the Cu spin moments and long range ordering with $T_{c}$=13.6 K. The entropy related to the transition is reduced due to quantum fluctuations. In Raman scattering a well structured low energy magnetic excitation is observed at energies of $\approx$50K (35cm$^{-1})$. This energy scale is reduced as compared to Cu-2252.

Wither the sliding Luttinger liquid phase in the planar pyrochlore

Using series expansion based on the flow equation method we study the zero temperature properties of the spin-1/2 planar pyrochlore antiferromagnet in the limit of strong diagonal coupling. Starting from the limit of decoupled crossed dimers we analyze the evolution of the ground state energy and the elementary triplet excitations in terms of two coupling constants describing the inter dimer exchange. In the limit of weakly coupled spin-1/2 chains we find that the fully frustrated inter chain coupling is critical, forcing a dimer phase which adiabatically connects to the state of isolated dimers. This result is consistent with findings by O. Starykh, A. Furusaki and L. Balents (Phys. Rev. B 72, 094416 (2005)) which is inconsistent with a two-dimensional sliding Luttinger liquid phase at finite inter chain coupling.

Series expansion analysis of a tetrahedral cluster spin chain

Using series expansion by continuous unitary transformations we study the magnetic properties of a frustrated tetrahedral spin-1/2 chain. Starting from the limit of isolated tetrahedra we analyze the evolution of the ground state energy and the elementary triplet dispersion as a function of the inter-tetrahedral coupling. The quantum phase diagram is evaluated and is shown to incorporate a singlet product, a dimer, and a Haldane phase. Comparison of our results with those from several other techniques, such as density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization and bond-operator theory are provided and convincing agreement is found.

Finite temperature properties of the two-dimensional SU(2) Kondo-necklace

We analyse several thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional Kondo necklace using finite-temperature stochastic series expansion. In agreement with previous zero-temperature findings the model is shown to exhibit a quantum critical point (QCP), separating an antiferromagnetic from a paramagnetic dimerized state at a critical Kondo exchange-coupling strength $J_{c}\approx 1.4$. We evaluate the temperature dependent uniform and staggered structure factors as well as the uniform and staggered susceptibilities and the local 'impurity' susceptibility close to the QCP as well as in the ordered and quantum disordered phase. The crossover between the classical, renormalized classical, and quantum critical regime is analyzed as a function of temperature and Kondo coupling.
