Thermodynamic properties of ferromagnetic mixed-spin chain systems

Using a combination of high-temperature series expansion, exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo, we perform a complementary analysis of the thermodynamic properties of quasi-one-dimensional mixed-spin systems with alternating magnetic moments. In addition to explicit series expansions for small spin quantum numbers, we present an expansion that allows a direct evaluation of the series coefficients as a function of spin quantum numbers. Due to the presence of excitations of both acoustic and optical nature, the specific heat of a mixed-spin chain displays a double-peak-like structure, which is more pronounced for ferromagnetic than for antiferromagnetic intra-chain exchange. We link these results to an analytically solvable half-classical limit. Finally, we extend our series expansion to incorporate the single-ion anisotropies relevant for the molecular mixed-spin ferromagnetic chain material MnNi(NO$_{2}$)$_{4}$(ethylenediamine)$_{2}$, with alternating spins of magnitude 5/2 and 1. Including a weak inter-chain coupling, we show that the observed susceptibility allows for an excellent fit, and the extraction of microscopic exchange parameters.

Spin- and Charge Excitations of the Triangular Hubbard-Model: a FLEX-Study

A study of the quasi-particle excitations and spin fluctuations in the one-band Hubbard-model on the triangular lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping is presented. Using the fluctuation-exchange-approximation (FLEX) results for the quasi-particle dispersion and life-time, the Fermi surface, and the static spin structure factor will be discussed for a wide range of dopings and as a function of the Coulomb correlation strength U. It is shown that the renormalization of the spin- and charge-dynamics is sensitive to the interplay between van Hove singularity-effects and the nesting, which is influenced by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping. For all dopings investigated, the energy-dependence of the quasi-particle life time is found to be of conventional Fermi-liquid nature. At intermediate correlation strength the static structure factor is strongly doping dependent, with a large commensurate peak at the K-point for 1.35 electrons per site and weak, incommensurate intensities occuring at lower electron densities. The relevance of this model to the recently discovered cobaltates Na_xCoO_2.yH_2O will be discussed.

On the valence-bond solid phase of the crossed-chain quantum spin model

Using a series expansion based on the flow-equation method we study the ground state energy and the elementary triplet excitations of a generalized model of crossed spin-1/2 chains starting from the limit of decoupled quadrumers. The triplet dispersion is shown to be very sensitive to the inter-quadrumer frustration, exhibiting a line of almost complete localization as well as lines of quantum phase transitions limiting the stability of the valence-bond solid phase. In the vicinity of the checkerboard-point a finite window of exchange couplings is found with a non-zero spin-gap, consistent with known results from exact diagonalization. The ground state energy is lower than that of the bare quadrumer case for all exchange couplings investigated. In the limiting situation of the fully frustrated checkerboard magnet our results agree with earlier series expansion studies.

Spin dynamics of a tetrahedral cluster magnet

We study the magnetism of a lattice of coupled tetrahedral spin-1/2 clusters which might be of relevance to the tellurate compounds Cu2Te2O5X2, with X=Cl, Br. Using the flow equation method we perform a series expansion in terms of the inter-tetrahedral exchange couplings starting from the quadrumer limit. Results will be given for the magnetic instabilities of the quadrumer phase and the dispersion of elementary triplet excitations. In limiting cases of our model of one- or two dimensional character we show our results to be consistent with findings on previously investigated decoupled tetrahedral chains and the Heisenberg model on the 1/5-depleted square lattice.

Planar pyrochlore: a strong-coupling analysis

Recent investigations of the two-dimensional spin-1/2 checkerboard lattice favor a valence bond crystal with long range quadrumer order [J.-B. Fouet et al., preprint cond-mat/0108070]. Starting from the limit of isolated quadrumers, we perform a complementary analysis of the evolution of the spectrum as a function of the inter quadrumer coupling j using both, exact diagonalization (ED) and series expansion (SE) by continuous unitary transformation. We compute (i) the ground state energy, (ii) the elementary triplet excitations, (iii) singlet excitations on finite systems and find very good agreement between SE and ED. In the thermodynamic limit we find a ground state energy substantially lower than documented in the literature. The elementary triplet excitation is shown to be gapped and almost dispersionless, whereas the singlet sector contains strongly dispersive modes. Evidence is presented for the low energy singlet excitations in the spin gap in the vicinity of j=1 to result from a large downward renormalization of local high-energy states.

Two-hole dynamics in spin ladders

We present an analytic theory for the energy spectrum of a two-leg spin ladder doped with two holes. Starting from a pseudo-fermion-bond-boson representation of the corresponding $t_{1,2}-J_{1,2}$ Hamiltonian we apply a diagrammatic approach adapted to the limit of strong rung coupling, which includes both, the coupling of holes to the spin background as well as the two-hole interactions. The two-hole spectrum is calculated and the formation of bound states is discussed. Additionally the evolution of the spin gap of the ladder upon doping is analyzed. A comparison with existing exact diagonalization data is presented and good agreement is found.

Magnetism of a tetrahedral cluster spin-chain

We discuss the magnetic properties of a dimerized and completely frustrated tetrahedral spin-1/2 chain. Using a combination of exact diagonalization and bond-operator theory the quantum phase diagram is shown to incorporate a singlet-product, a dimer, and a Haldane phase. In addition we consider one-, and two-triplet excitations in the dimer phase and evaluate the magnetic Raman cross section which is found to be strongly renormalized by the presence of a two-triplet bound state. The link to a novel tellurate materials is clarified.

Raman cross section of spin ladders

We demonstrate that a two-triplet resonance strongly renormalizes the Raman spectrum of two-leg spin ladders and moreover suggest this to be the origin of the asymmetry of the magnetic Raman continuum observed in CaV2O5.

Bond operator mean field theory of the half filled Kondo lattice model

We present a bond-operator mean field theory for the Kondo lattice model at half filling in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions. A continuous quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic to a spin-gapped singlet ground state is found at J/t=1.505 (1.833) in 2D (3D). Additionally we evaluate the quasiparticle dispersions as well as the staggered magnetic moment and provide a comparison with complementary numerical approaches.

Magnetism of a tetrahedral cluster-chain

Magnetic properties of a completely frustrated tetrahedral chain are briefly summarized. Using exact diagonalization, and bond-operator theory results for the ground-state phase diagram, the one-triplet excitations and the Raman spectrum are given. The link to novel tellurate materials is clarified.

Magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 quadrumer chain

We study a novel S=1/2 cluster chain Hamiltonian which has recently been proposed in the context of the charge ordered low-temperature phase of alpha'-NaV2O5. We perform a detailed investigation of this model within a large range of parameters using perturbation theory and Lanczos diagonalization. Using model-specific local conservation laws and parameter-dependent mappings to various effective low-energy Hamiltonians we uncover a rich phase diagram and several regimes of gapful spin-excitations. We find that the overall features of recent neutron scattering data on alpha'-NaV2O5 can be fitted within this model, however using a set of parameters which seems unlikely.

Single-hole dynamics in dimerized and frustrated spin-chains

We present a unified account for the coupled single-hole- and spin-dynamics in the spin-gap phase of dimerized and frustrated spin-chains and two-leg spin ladders. Based on the strong dimer-limit of a one-dimensional $t_123$-$J_123$-model a diagrammatic approach is presented which employs a mapping of the spin-Hamiltonian onto a pseudo-fermion bond-boson model. Results for the single-hole spectrum are detailed. A finite quasi-particle weight is observed and studied for a variety of system parameters. A comparison with existing exact diagonalization data is performed and good agreement is found.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in NaV$_2$O$_5$: a microscopic study

We present a unified account of magnetic exchange and Raman scattering in the quasi-one-dimensional transition-metal oxide NaV$_2$O$_5$. Based on a cluster-model approach explicit expressions for the exchange integral and the Raman-operator are given. It is demonstrated that a combination of the electronic-structure and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, allowed by symmetry in this material, are responsible for the finite Raman cross-section giving rise to both, one- and two-magnon scattering amplitudes.

Crystal Field, Magnetic Anisotropy and Excitations in Rare-Earth Hexaborides

We clarify the role of crystalline electric field (CEF) induced magnetic anisotropy in the ground state and spin-wave spectrum of cubic rare-earth materials with dominating isotropic magnetic exchange interactions. In particular we study the hexaboride NdB_6 which is shown to exhibit strong spin-quadrupolar coupling. The CEF scheme is analyzed and a non-collinear magnetization response is found. The spin orientation in the antiferromagnetically ordered ground-state is identified. Moreover, the spin excitations are evaluated and in agreement with inelastic neutron scattering a suppression of one of the two magnetic modes in the strong-coupling regime is predicted.

Anisotropic Scattering Rates in the t-t'-U Hubbard Model

We have investigated the evolution of the electronic properties of the t-t'-U Hubbard model with hole doping and temperature. Due to the shape of the Fermi surface, scattering from short wavelength spin fluctuations leads to strongly anisotropic quasi-particle scattering rates at low temperatures near half-filling. As a consequence, significant variations with momenta near the Fermi surface emerge for the spectral functions and the corresponding ARPES signals. This behavior is quite in contrast to the intermediate doping regime and we discuss the possible relevance of our results for the interpretation of photoemission spectra in cuprate superconductors at different hole doping levels.

Magnetic Excitations in quasi two-dimensional Spin-Peierls Systems

A study is presented of a two-dimensional frustrated and dimerized quantum spin-system which models the effect of inter-chain coupling in a spin-Peierls compound. Employing a bond-boson method to account for quantum disorder in the ground state the elementary excitations are evaluated in terms of gapful triplet modes. Results for the ground state energy and the spin gap are discussed. The triplet dispersion is found to be in excellent agreement with inelastic neutron scattering data in the dimerized phase of the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3. Moreover, consistent with these neutron scattering experiments, the low-temperature dynamic structure factor exhibits a high-energy continuum split off from the elementary triplet mode.

Raman Scattering from Frustrated Quantum Spin Chains

Magnetic Raman scattering from a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg-chain is considered with a focus on the uniform phase of the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3. The Raman intensity is analyzed in terms of a Loudon-Fleury scattering process using a spinless-fermion mean-field theory developed for the frustrated spin-chain. A comparison to experimental data is presented and the frustration and temperature dependence is studied. In good agreement with observed spectra a broad inelastic four-spinon continuum is found at low temperatures above the spin-Peierls transition. At high temperatures the intensity develops a quasi-elastic line analogous to experiment.
