Detecting the entanglement of vortices in ultracold bosons with artificial gauge fields

The entanglement of vortices in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with artificial gauge fields is investigated using the exact diagonalization techniques. We propose an effective Hamiltonian for the spin-spin interactions between vortices responsible for this entanglement, and show that the entanglement can be detected through the quantum interference of the bosons in the vortex centers achieved using the Raman coupling and the quantum gas microscope. The strong bosonic coherence between the vortex centers originates from the charge-density wave order in the vortex core. It is robust against the varying of the pinning strength for the vortices to a wide range, and the coherent bosons can be viewed as a qubit stored in the ground state of the system. Our proposal provides a feasible scheme of quantum memory for storing qubits useful in quantum computation.

Universal Dissipationless Dynamics in Gaussian Continuous-variable Open Systems

We investigate the universal dissipationless dynamics of Gaussian continuous-variable systems in the presence of a band-gapped bosonic environment. Our results show that environmental band gaps can induce localized modes, which give rise to the dissipationless dynamics where the system behaves as free oscillators instead of experiencing a full decay in the long time limit. We present a complete characterization of localized modes, and show the existence of the critical system-environment coupling. Beyond the critical values, localized modes can be produced and the system dynamics become dissipationless. This novel dynamics can be utilized to overcome the environmental noises and protect the quantum resources in the continuous-variable quantum information.

Tunable spinful matter wave valve

We investigate the transport problem that a spinful matter wave is incident on a strong localized spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in optical lattices, where the localization is admitted by atom interaction only existing at one particular site, and the spin-orbit coupling arouse spatial rotation of the spin texture. We find that tuning the spin orientation of the localized Bose-Einstein condensate can lead to spin-nonreciprocal / spin-reciprocal transport, meaning the transport properties are dependent on / independent of the spin orientation of incident waves. In the former case, we obtain the conditions to achieve transparency, beam-splitting, and blockade of the incident wave with a given spin orientation, and furthermore the ones to perfectly isolate incident waves of different spin orientation, while in the latter, we obtain the condition to maximize the conversion of different spin states. The result may be useful to develop a novel spinful matter wave valve that integrates spin switcher, beam-splitter, isolator, and converter. The method can also be applied to other real systems, e.g., realizing perfect isolation of spin states in magnetism, which is otherwise rather difficult.

Topological Nonlinear Optics with Spin-Orbit coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate in Cavity

We report topological nonlinear optics with spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity. The cavity is driven by a pump laser and weak probe laser which excite Bose-Einstein condensate to an intermediate storage level, where the standard Raman process engineers spin-orbit coupling. We show that the nonlinear photonic interactions at the transitional pathways of dressed states result in new type of optical transparencies, which get completely inverted with atom induced gain. These nonlinear interactions also implant topological sort of features in probe transmission modes by inducing gapless Dirac-like cones, which become gaped in presence of Raman detuning. The topological features get interestingly enhanced in gain regime where the gapless topological edge-like states emerge among the probe modes, which can cause non-trivial phase transition. We show that spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field effects also impressively revamp fast and slow probe light. The manipulation of dressed states for quantum nonlinear optics with topological characteristics in our findings could be a crucial step towards topological quantum computation.

Dynamical Phase Transition of two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlinear tunneling in an optomechanical cavity-mediated double-well system

We investigate the dynamical phase transition of two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlinear tunneling, which is trapped inside a double-well and dispersively coupled to a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity with one moving end mirror driven by a single mode standing field. The nonlinear tunneling interaction leads to an increase of stability points and riches the phase diagram of the system. It is shown that the appearance of the moving end mirror speeds up the tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates, which makes population difference between two wells and regulates the number of the stability points of the system.

Phase separation and hidden vortices induced by spin-orbit coupling in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate phase separation and hidden vortices in spin-orbit coupled ferromagnetic BoseEinstein condensates with rotation and Rabi coupling. The hidden vortices are invisible in density distribution but are visible in phase distribution, which can carry angular momentum like the ordinary quantized vortices. In the absence of the rotation, we observe the phase separation induced by the spin-orbit coupling and determine the entire phase diagram of the existence of phase separation. For the rotation case, in addition to the phase separation, we demonstrate particularly that the spin-orbit coupling can result in the hidden vortices and hidden vortex-antivortex pairs. The corresponding entire phase diagrams are determined, depending on the interplay of the spin-orbit coupling strength, the rotation frequency, and Rabi frequency, which reveals the critical condition of the occurrence of the hidden vortices and vortex-antivortex pairs. The hidden vortices here are proved to be long-lived in the time scale of experiment by the dynamic analysis. These findings not only provide a clear illustration of the phase separation in spin-orbit coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, but also open a new direction for investigating the hidden vortices in high-spin quantum system.

Robust Large Gap Quantum Spin Hall Insulators in Methyl-functionalized III-Bi Buckled Honeycombs

A large bulk band gap is critical for the applications of quantum spin hall (QSH) insulators in spintronics at room temperature. Based on first-principles calculations, we predict that the methyl-functionalized III-Bi monolayers, namely III-Bi-(CH3)2 (III=Ga, In, Tl) thin films, own QSH states with band gap as large as 0.260, 0.304 and 0.843 eV, respectively, making them suitable for room-temperature applications. The topological characteristics are confirmed by s-px,y band inversion, topological invariant Z2, and the topologically protected edge states. Noticeably, for GaBi/InBi-(CH3)2 films, the s-px,y band inversion occurred in the progress of spin-orbital coupling (SOC), while for TlBi(CH3)2 film, the s-px,y band inversion happened in the progress of chemical bonding. Significantly, the QSH states in III-Bi-(CH3)2 films are robust against the mechanical strains and various methyl coverages, making these films particularly flexible to substrate choice for device applications. Besides, the h-BN substrate is an ideal substrate for III-Bi-(CH3)2 films to realize large gap nontrivial topological states.. These findings demonstrate that the methyl-functionalized III-Bi films may be good QSH effect platforms for topological electronic devices design and fabrication in spintronics.

Non-Markovian full counting statistics of cotunneling assisted sequential tunneling in open quantum systems

We develop a non-Markovian full counting statistics formalism taking into account both the sequential tunneling and cotunneling based on the exact particle number resolved time-convolutionless master equation and the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory. Then, we study the influences of the quantum coherence and the cotunneling assisted sequential tunneling processes on the non-Markovian full counting statistics of electron tunneling through an open quantum system, which consists of a side-coupled double-quantum-dot molecule weakly coupled to two electron reservoirs. We demonstrate that in the sequential tunneling regime the competition or interplay between the quantum coherence and the cotunneling processes determines whether the super-Poissonian of the shot noise, the skewness and the kurtosis take place and whether the sign transitions of the values of the skewness and the kurtosis occur in the strong quantum-coherent side-coupled double-quantum-dot molecule. These results suggest that it is necessary to consider the effects of the quantum coherence and the cotunneling processes on the full counting statistics of electron tunneling through open strong quantum-coherent quantum systems in the sequential tunneling regime, which provide a deeper insight into understanding of electron tunneling through open quantum systems.

Topological Supersolidity of Dipolar Fermi Gases in a Spin-Dependent Optical Lattice

We investigate topological supersolidity of dipolar Fermi gases in a spin-dependent 2D optical lattice. Numerical results show that the topological supersolid states can be synthesized via the combination of topological superfluid states with the stripe order, where the topological superfluid states generated with dipolar interaction possess the $Δ_{x}+iΔ_{y}$ order, and it is of D class topological classification. By adjusting the ratio between hopping amplitude $t_{x}/t_{y}$ and interaction strength $U$ with dipole orientation $ϕ\approx \fracπ{4}$, the system will undergo phase transitions among the $p_{x}+ip_{y}$-wave topological superfluid state, the p-wave superfluid state, and the topological supersolid state. The topological supersolid state is proved to be stable by the positive sign of the inverse compressibility. We design an experimental protocol to realize the staggered next-next-nearest-neighbour hopping via the laser assisted tunneling technique, which is the key to synthesize topological supersolid states.

The polarization and the fundamental sensitivity of $^{39}$K ($^{133}$Cs)-$^{85}$Rb-$^{4}$He hybrid optical pumping spin exchange relaxation free atomic magnetometers

The hybrid optical pumping spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) atomic magnetometers can realize ultrahigh sensitivity measurement of magnetic field and inertia. We have studied the $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization of two types of hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometers based on $^{\text{39}}$K-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He and $^{\text{133}}$Cs-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He respectively. Then we found that $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization varies with the number density of buffer gas $^{\text{4}}$He and quench gas N$_{\text{2}}$, pumping rate of pump beam and cell temperature respectively, which will provide an experimental guide for the design of the magnetometer. We obtain a general formula on the fundamental sensitivity of the hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometer due to shot-noise. The formula describes that the fundamental sensitivity of the magnetometer varies with the number density of buffer gas and quench gas, the pumping rate of pump beam, external magnetic field, cell effective radius, measurement volume, cell temperature and measurement time. We obtain a highest fundamental sensitivity of $1.5073$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$ ($1$ $aT=10^{-18}$ $T$) with $^{\text{39}}$K-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He magnetometer between above two types of magnetometers when $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization is $0.1116$. We estimate the fundamental sensitivity limit of the hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometer to be superior to $1.8359\times10^{-2}$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$, which is higher than the shot-noise-limited sensitivity of $1$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$ of K SERF atomic magnetometer.

Auxiliary-cavity-assisted ground-state cooling of optically levitated nanosphere in the unresolved-sideband regime

We theoretically analyse the ground-state cooling of optically levitated nanosphere in unresolved- sideband regime by introducing a coupled high-quality-factor cavity. On account of the quantum interference stemming from the presence of the coupled cavity, the spectral density of the optical force exerting on the nanosphere gets changed and then the symmetry between the heating and the cooling processes is broken. Through adjusting the detuning of strong-dissipative cavity mode, one obtains an enhanced net cooling rate for the nanosphere. It is illustrated that the ground state cooling can be realized in the unresolved sideband regime even if the effective optomechanical coupling is weaker than the frequency of the nanosphere, which can be understood by the picture that the effective interplay of the nanosphere and the auxiliary cavity mode brings the system back to an effective resolved regime. Besides, the coupled cavity refines the dynamical stability of the system.

Quantum phase transitions of light in a dissipative Dicke-Bose-Hubbard model

The impacts that the environment has on the quantum phase transition of light in the DickeBose-Hubbard model are investigated. Based on the quasibosonic approach, mean field theory and the perturbation theory, the formulation of the Hamiltonian, the eigenenergies and the superfluid order parameter are obtained analytically. Compared with the ideal cases, the order parameter of the system evolves with time as the photons naturally decay in their environment. When the system starts with the superfluid state, the dissipation makes the photons tend to localize, and a greater hopping energy of photon is required to restore the long-range phase coherence of the localized state of the system. Furthermore, the Mott lobes disappears and the system tends to be classical with the number of atoms increasing; however, the atomic number is far lower than that expected under ideal circumstances. Therefore, our theoretical results offer valuable insight into the quantum phase transition of a dissipative system.

Quantum incommensurate Skyrmion crystals and Commensurate to In-commensurate transitions in cold atoms and materials with spin orbit couplings in a Zeeman field

In this work, we study strongly interacting spinor atoms in a lattice subject to a 2 dimensional (2d) anisotropic Rashba type of spin orbital coupling (SOC) and an Zeeman field. We find the interplay between the Zeeman field and the SOC provides a new platform to host rich and novel classes of quantum commensurate and in-commensurate phases, excitations and phase transitions. These commensurate phases include two collinear states at low and high Zeeman field, two co-planar canted states at Mirror reflected SOC parameters respectively. Most importantly, there are non-coplanar incommensurate Skyrmion (IC-SkX) crystal phases surrounded by the 4 commensurate phases. New excitation spectra above all the 5 phases, especially on the IC-SKX phase are computed. Three different classes of quantum commensurate to in-commensurate transitions from the IC-SKX to its 4 neighboring commensurate phases are identified. Finite temperature behaviors and transitions are discussed. The critical temperatures of all the phases can be raised above that reachable by current cold atom cooling techniques simply by tuning the number of atoms $ N $ per site. In view of recent impressive experimental advances in generating 2d SOC for cold atoms in optical lattices, these new many-body phenomena can be explored in the current and near future cold atom experiments. Applications to various materials such as MnSi, Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$Si, especially the complex incommensurate magnetic ordering in Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are given.

Hubbard model with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and Rotated Anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg Model

In this work, we investigate the possible dramatic effects of Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on fermionic Hubbard model in a 2d square lattice. In the strong coupling limit, it leads to the Rotated Anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model which is a new class of quantum spin model. For a special equivalent class, we identify a new spin-orbital entangled commensurate ground ( Y-y ) state subject to strong quantum fluctuations at $T=0$. We evaluate the quantum fluctuations by the spin wave expansion up to order $ 1/S^2 $. In some SOC parameter regime, the Y-y state supports a massive relativistic in-commensurate magnon ( C-IC ) with its two gap minima positions continuously tuned by the SOC parameters. The C-IC magnons dominate all the low temperature thermodynamic quantities and also lead to the separation of the peak positions between the longitudinal and the transverse spin structure factors. In the weak coupling limit, any weak repulsive interaction also leads to a weak Y-y state. There is only a crossover from the weak to the strong coupling. High temperature expansions of the specific heats in both weak and strong coupling are presented. The dramatic roles to be played by these C-IC magnons at generic SOC parameters or under various external probes are hinted. Experimental applications to both layered noncentrosymmetric materials and cold atom are discussed.

Dynamics of the localized nonlinear waves in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with time-space modulation

We investigate the dynamics of the localized nonlinear matter wave in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with trapping potentials and nonlinearities dependent on time and space. We solve the three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation by similarity transformation and obtain two families of exact matter wave solutions in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions and Mathieu equation. The localized states of the spinor matter wave describe the dynamics of vector breathing solitons, moving breathing solitons, quasibreathing solitons and resonant solitons. The results of stability show that one order vector breathing solitons, quasibreathing solitons, resonant solitons, and the moving breathing solitons ψ_{\pm1} are all stable but the moving breathing solitons ψ_0 is unstable. We also present the experimental parameters to realize these phenomena in the future experiments.

Spin-Orbit Coupling Induced Back-action Cooling in Cavity-Optomechanics with a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We report a spin-orbit coupling induced back-action cooling in an optomechanical system, composed of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical cavity with one movable end mirror, by suppressing heating effects of quantum noises. The collective density excitations of the spin-orbit coupling mediated hyperfine states - serving as atomic oscillators equally coupled to the cavity field - trigger strongly driven atomic back-action. We find that the back-action not only revamps low-temperature dynamics of its own but also provides an opportunity to cool the mechanical mirror to its quantum mechanical ground state. Further, we demonstrate that the strength of spin-orbit coupling also superintends dynamic structure factor and squeezes nonlinear quantum noises, like thermo-mechanical and photon shot noise, which enhances optomechanical features of hybrid cavity beyond the previous investigations. Our findings are testable in a realistic setup and enhance the functionality of cavity-optomechanics with spin-orbit coupled hyperfine states in the field of quantum optics and quantum computation.

Double-Quantum Spin Vortices in SU(3) Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose Gases

We show that double-quantum spin vortices, which are characterized by doubly quantized circulating spin currents and unmagnetized filled cores, can exist in the ground states of SU(3) spin-orbit coupled Bose gases. It is found that the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling and spin-exchange interaction play important roles in determining the ground-state phase diagram. In the case of effective ferromagnetic spin interaction, the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling induces a three-fold degeneracy to the magnetized ground state, while in the antiferromagnetic spin interaction case, the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling breaks the ordinary phase rule of spinor Bose gases, and allows the spontaneous emergence of double-quantum spin vortices. This exotic topological defect is in stark contrast to the singly quantized spin vortices observed in existing experiments, and can be readily observed by the current magnetization-sensitive phase-contrast imaging technique.

Dynamics of vortex quadrupoles in nonrotating trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

Dynamics of vortex clusters is essential for understanding diverse superfluid phenomena. In this paper, we examine the dynamics of vortex quadrupoles in a trapped two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that the movement of these vortex-clusters fall into three distinct regimes which are fully described by the radial positions of the vortices in a 2D isotropic harmonic trap, or by the major radius (minor radius) of the elliptical equipotential lines decided by the vortex positions in a 2D anisotropic harmonic trap. In the "recombination" and "exchange" regimes the quadrupole structure maintains, while the vortices annihilate each other permanently in the "annihilation" regime. We find that the mechanism of the charge flipping in the "exchange" regime and the disappearance of the quadrupole structure in the "annihilation" regime are both through an intermediate state where two vortex dipoles connected through a soliton ring. We give the parameter ranges for these three regimes in coordinate space for a specific initial configuration and phase diagram of the vortex positions with respect to the Thomas-Fermi radius of the condensate. We show that the results are also applicable to systems with quantum fluctuations for the short-time evolution.
