Mott Physics and Topological Phase Transition in Correlated Dirac Fermions

We investigate the interplay between the strong correlation and the spin-orbital coupling in the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model and obtain the qualitative phase diagram via the variational cluster approach. We identify, through an increase of the Hubbard $U$, the transition from the topological band insulator to either the spin liquid phase or the easy-plane antiferromagnetic insulating phase, depending on the strength of the spin-orbit coupling. A nontrivial evolution of the bulk bands in the topological quantum phase transition is also demonstrated.

Charge-density-wave and topological transitions in interacting Haldane model

Haldane model is a noninteracting model for spinless fermions showing nontrivial topological properties. Effect of the electron-electron interaction on the topological phase poses an intriguing question. By means of the Hartree-Fock mean field, the exact diagonalization and the constrained-path Monte Carlo methods we mapped out the phase diagram of the interacting Haldane model. It is found that interaction breaks down the topological phase and drives the system into the charge-density-wave state. Sequence of the two transitions depends on the strength of next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Many-body Chern number and the charge excitation gap are used to characterize the topological transition.

Enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit in a quantum dot due to the Coulomb blockade effect

We investigate the figure of merit of a quantum dot (QD) in the Coulomb blockade regime. It is found that the figure of merit $ZT$ may be quite high if only single energy level in the QD is considered. On the other hand, with two or multi energy levels in the QD and without the Coulomb interaction, the $ZT$ is strongly suppressed by the bipolar effect due to small level spacing. However, in the presence of the Coulomb interaction, the effective level spacing is enlarged and the bipolar effect is weakened, resulting in $ZT$ to be considerably high. Thus, it is more likely to find a high efficient thermoelectric QDs with large Coulomb interaction. By using the parameters for a typical QD, the $ZT$ can reach over 5.

The scaling feature of the magnetic field induced Kondo-peak splittings

By using the full density matrix approach to spectral functions within the numerical renormalization group method, we present a detailed study of the magnetic field induced splittings in the spin-resolved and the total spectral densities of a Kondo correlated quantum dot described by the single level Anderson impurity model. The universal scaling of the splittings with magnetic field is examined by varying the Kondo scale either by a change of local level position at a fixed tunnel coupling or by a change of the tunnel coupling at a fixed level position. We find that the Kondo-peak splitting $Δ/T_K$ in the spin-resolved spectral function always scales perfectly for magnetic fields $B<8T_K$ in either of the two $T_K$-adjusted paths. Scaling is destroyed for fields $B>10T_K$. On the other hand, the Kondo peak splitting $δ/T_K$ in the total spectral function does slightly deviate from the conventional scaling theory in whole magnetic field window along the coupling-varying path. Furthermore, we show the scaling analysis suitable for all field windows within the Kondo regime and two specific fitting scaling curves are given from which certain detailed features at low field are derived. In addition, the scaling dimensionless quantity $Δ/2B$ and $δ/2B$ are also studied and they can reach and exceed 1 in the large magnetic field region, in agreement with a recent experiment [T.M. Liu, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 026803 (2009)].

Giant Intrinsic Spin-Orbit Coupling in Bilayer Graphene

The intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) in bilayer graphene is investigated. We find that the largest ISOC between $π$ electrons origins from the following hopping processes: a $π$ electron hops to $σ$ orbits of the other layer and further to $π$ orbits with the opposite spin through the intra-atomic ISOC. The magnitude of this ISOC is about $0.46meV$, 100 times larger than that of the monolayer graphene. The Hamiltonians including this ISOC in both momentum and real spaces are derived. Due to this ISOC, the low-energy states around the Dirac point exhibit a special spin polarization, in which the electron spins are oppositely polarized in the upper and lower layers. This spin polarization state is robust, protected by the time-reversal symmetry. In addition, we provide a hybrid system to select a certain spin polarization state by an electric manipulation.

Gate-Voltage Control of Chemical Potential and Weak Anti-localization in Bismuth Selenide

We report that Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films can be epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates, which allow for very large tunablity in carrier density with a back-gate. The observed low field magnetoconductivity due to weak anti-localization (WAL) has a very weak gate-voltage dependence unless the electron density is reduced to very low values. Such a transition in WAL is correlated with unusual changes in longitudinal and Hall resistivities. Our results suggest much suppressed bulk conductivity at large negative gate-voltages and a possible role of surface states in the WAL phenomena. This work may pave a way for realizing three-dimensional topological insulators at ambient conditions.

Landau Quantization of Massless Dirac Fermions in Topological Insulator

The recent theoretical prediction and experimental realization of topological insulators (TI) has generated intense interest in this new state of quantum matter. The surface states of a three-dimensional (3D) TI such as Bi_2Te_3, Bi_2Se_3 and Sb_2Te_3 consist of a single massless Dirac cones. Crossing of the two surface state branches with opposite spins in the materials is fully protected by the time reversal (TR) symmetry at the Dirac points, which cannot be destroyed by any TR invariant perturbation. Recent advances in thin-film growth have permitted this unique two-dimensional electron system (2DES) to be probed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The intriguing TR symmetry protected topological states were revealed in STM experiments where the backscattering induced by non-magnetic impurities was forbidden. Here we report the Landau quantization of the topological surface states in Bi_2Se_3 in magnetic field by using STM/STS. The direct observation of the discrete Landau levels (LLs) strongly supports the 2D nature of the topological states and gives direct proof of the nondegenerate structure of LLs in TI. We demonstrate the linear dispersion of the massless Dirac fermions by the square-root dependence of LLs on magnetic field. The formation of LLs implies the high mobility of the 2DES, which has been predicted to lead to topological magneto-electric effect of the TI.

Spin current through an ESR quantum dot: A real-time study

The spin transport in a strongly interacting spin-pump nano-device is studied using the time-dependent variational-matrix-product-state (VMPS) approach. The precession magnetic field generates a dissipationless spin current through the quantum dot. We compute the real time spin current away from the equilibrium condition. Both transient and stationary states are reached in the simulation. The essentially exact results are compared with those from the Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA). It is found that correlation effect on the physical quantities at quasi-steady state are captured well by the HFA for small interaction strength. However the HFA misses many features in the real time dynamics. Results reported here may shed light on the understanding of the ultra-fast processes as well as the interplay of the non-equilibrium and strongly correlated effect in the transport properties.

CT invariant quantum spin Hall effect in a ferromagnetic graphene

We predict a quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in the ferromagnetic graphene under a magnetic field. Unlike the previous QSHE, this QSHE appears in the absence of any spin-orbit interaction, thus, arrived from a different physical origin. The previous QSHE is protected by the time-reversal (T) invariance. This new QSHE is protected by the CT invariance, where C is the charge conjugation operation. Due to this QSHE, the longitudinal resistance exhibits quantum plateaus. The plateau values are at 1/2, 1/6, 3/28, ..., (in the unit of $h/e^2$), depending on the filling factors of the spin-up and spin-down carriers. The spin Hall resistance is also investigated and is found to be robust against the disorder.

An Impurity Solver Using the Time-Dependent Variational Matrix Product State Approach

We use the time dependent variational matrix product state (tVMPS) approach to investigate the dynamical properties of the single impurity Anderson model (SIAM). Under the Jordan-Wigner transformation, the SIAM is reformulated into two spin-1/2 XY chains with local magnetic fields along the z-axis. The chains are connected by the longitudinal Ising coupling at the end points. The ground state of the model is searched variationally within the space spanned by the matrix product state (MPS). The temporal Green's functions are calculated both by the imaginary and real time evolutions, from which the spectral information can be extracted. The possibility of using the tVMPS approach as an impurity solver for the dynamical mean field theory is also addressed. Finite temperature density operator is obtained by the ancilla approach. The results are compared to those from the Lanczos and the Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte-Carlo methods.

Quantum tunneling through planar p-n junctions in HgTe quantum wells

We demonstrate that a p-n junction created electrically in HgTe quantum wells with inverted band-structure exhibits interesting intraband and interband tunneling processes. We find a perfect intraband transmission for electrons injected perpendicularly to the interface of the p-n junction. The opacity and transparency of electrons through the p-n junction can be tuned by changing the incidence angle, the Fermi energy and the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The occurrence of a conductance plateau due to the formation of topological edge states in a quasi-one-dimensional p-n junction can be switched on and off by tuning the gate voltage. The spin orientation can be substantially rotated when the samples exhibit a moderately strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction.

Interaction-induced anomalous transport behavior in one dimensional optical lattice

The non-equilibrium dynamics of spin impurity atoms in a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas under the gravity field is studied. We show that due to the non-equilibrium preparation of the initial state as well as the interaction between the impurity atoms and other bosons, a counterintuitive phenomenon may emerge: the impurity atoms could propagate upwards automatically in the gravity field . The effects of the strength of interaction, the gradient of the gravity field, as well as the different configurations of the initial state are investigated by studying the time-dependent evolution of the 1D strongly interacting bosonic system using time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) method. A profound connection between this counterintuitive phenomenon and the repulsive bound pair is also revealed.

Tunneling through ferromagnetic barriers on the surface of a topological insulator

We study the transmission through single and double ferromagnetic barriers on the surface of a topological insulator. By adjusting the gate voltage and magnetization oreintation, the ferromagnetic barrier can be tuned into various transmission regions, where the wavevector-dependent tunnelings are quite different. We find that the Klein tunneling can be manipulated or even be turned off. These special properties offer the possibility to control electron beams on the "topological metal". Various novel devices, such as electronic collimation, wavevector filter, magnetic and electric switchs, and wavevector-based spin valve, may be constructed based on our observed phenomena.

In-plane noncollinear exchange coupling mediated by helical edge states in Quantum Spin Hall system

We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction mediated by helical edge states in quantum spin hall system. The helical edge states induce an in-plane noncollinear exchange coupling between two local spins, in contrast to the isotropic coupling induced in normal metal. The angle between the two local spins in the ground state depends on the Fermi level. This property may be used to control the angle of spins by tuning the electric gate.

The electric current induced heat generation in a strongly interacting quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime

The heat generation by an electric current flowing through a quantum dot with the dot containing both electron-electron interaction and electron-phonon interaction, is studied. Using the non-equilibrium Keldysh Green's function method, the current-induced heat generation is obtained. We find that for a small phonon frequency, heat generation is proportional to the current. However, for a large phonon frequency, heat generation is in general qualitatively different from the current. It is non-monotonic with current and many unique and interesting behaviors emerge. The heat generation could be very large in the Coulomb blockade region, in which the current is very small due to the Coulomb blockade effect. On the other hand, in the resonant tunneling region, the heat generation is very small despite a large current, an ideal condition for device operation. In the curve of heat generation versus the bias, a negative differential of the heat generation is exhibited, although the current is always monotonously increasing with the bias voltage.

Numerical study of the topological Anderson insulator in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells

We study the disorder effect on the transport properties in the HgTe/CdTe semiconductor quantum wells. We confirm that at a moderate disorder strength, the initially un-quantized two terminal conductance becomes quantized, and the system makes a transition to the novel topological Anderson insulator (TAI). Conductances calculated for the stripe and cylinder samples reveal the topological feature of TAI and supports the idea that the helical edge states may cause the anomalous quantized plateaus. The influence of disorder is studied by calculating the distributions of local currents. Base on the above-mentioned picture, the phenomena induced by disorder in the quantum spin Hall region and TAI region are directly explained. Our study of the local current configurations shed further light on the mechanism of the anomalous plateau.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of a magnetic atom on graphene in the Kondo regime

The Kondo effect in the system consisting of a magnetic adatom on the graphene is studied. By using the non-equilibrium Green function method with the slave-boson mean field approximation, the local density of state (LDOS) and the conductance are calculated. For a doped graphene, the Kondo phase is present at all time. Surprisingly, two kinds of Kondo regimes are revealed. But for the undoped graphene, the Kondo phase only exists if the adatom's energy level is beyond a critical value. The conductance is similar to the LDOS, thus, the Kondo peak in the LDOS can be observed with the scanning tunneling spectroscopy. In addition, in the presence of a direct coupling between the STM tip and the graphene, the conductance may be dramatically enhanced, depending on the coupling site.

Quantum transport through a graphene nanoribbon-superconductor junction

We study the electron transport through a graphene nanoribbon-superconductor junction. Both zigzag and armchair edge graphene nanoribbons are considered, and the effects of the magnetic field and disorder on the transport property are investigated. By using the tight-binding model and the non-equilibrium Green's function method, the expressions of the current, conductance, normal tunneling coefficient, and Andreev reflection coefficient are obtained. For a clean system and at zero magnetic field, the linear conductance increases approximatively in a linear fashion with the on-site energy. In the presence of a magnetic field and a moderate disorder, the linear conductance exhibits plateau structures for both armchair and zigzag edges. The plateau values increase with the width of the graphene ribbon. With a wide sample width, a saturated plateau value of $|ν|e^2/h$ emerges at the filling factor $ν$. For a small filling factor, the conductance can reach the saturated value at a small width, but for a high filling factor, it requires to have a quite wide sample width to reach the saturated value. In particular, the Andreev reflection coefficient is always at 0.5 after reaching the saturated value, independent of any system parameters. In addition, we also consider the finite bias case, in which the Andreev reflection coefficient and normal tunneling coefficient are studied.
