Quantum size effects on the perpendicular upper critical field in ultra-thin lead films

We report the thickness-dependent (in terms of atomic layers) oscillation behavior of the perpendicular upper critical field $H_{c2\perp}$ in the ultra-thin lead films at the reduced temperature ($t=T/T_c$). Distinct oscillations of the normal-state resistivity as a function of film thickness have also been observed. Compared with the $T_c$ oscillation, the $H_{c2\perp}$ shows a considerable large oscillation amplitude and a $π$ phase shift. The oscillatory mean free path caused by quantum size effect plays a role in $H_{c2\perp}$ oscillation.

Bias-controllable intrinsic spin polarization in a quantum dot

We propose a novel scheme to efficiently polarize and manipulate the electron spin in a quantum dot. This scheme is based on the spin-orbit interaction and it possesses following advantages: (1) The direction and the strength of the spin polarization is well controllable and manipulatable by simply varying the bias or the gate voltage. (2) The spin polarization is quite large even with a weak spin-orbit interaction. (3) Both electron-electron interaction and multi-energy levels do not weaken but strengthen the spin polarization. (4) It has the short spin flip time. (5) The device is free of a magnetic field or a ferromagnetic material. (6) It can be easily realized with present technology.

Persistent spin current in spin-orbit coupling systems in the absence of an external magnetic field

The spin-orbit coupling systems with a zero magnetic field is studied under the equilibrium situation, {\it i.e.}, without a voltage bias. A persistent spin current is predicted to exist under most circumstances, although the persistent charge current and the spin accumulation are identically zero. In particular, a two-dimensional quantum wire is investigated in detail. Surprisingly, a persistent spin current is found to flow along the confined direction, due to the spin precession in accompany with the particle motion. This provides an interesting example of constant spin flowing without inducing a spin accumulation, contrary to common intuition.

The angular spin current and its physical consequences

We find that in order to completely describe the spin transport, apart from spin current (or linear spin current), one has to introduce the angular spin current. The two spin currents respectively describe the translational and rotational motion of a spin. The definitions of these spin current densities are given and their physical properties are discussed. Both spin current densities appear naturally in the spin continuity equation. Moreover we predict that the angular spin current can also induce an electric field $\vec{E}$, and in particular $\vec{E}$ scales as $1/r^2$ at large distance $r$, whereas the $\vec{E}$ field generated from the linear spin current goes as $1/r^3$.

Spontaneous spin-polarized current in a nonuniform Rashba interaction system

We investigate the electron transport through a two-dimensional semiconductor with a nonuniform Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Due to the combination of the coherence effect and the Rashba interaction, a spontaneous spin-polarized current emerges in the absence of any magnetic material and magnetic field. For a two-terminal device, only the local current contains polarization; however, with a four-terminal setup, a polarized total current is produced. This phenomenon may offer a novel way for generating a spin-polarized current, replacing the traditional spin-injection method.

Resonant spin Hall conductance in quantum Hall systems lacking bulk and structural inversion symmetry

Following a previous work [Shen, Ma, Xie and Zhang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 256603 (2004)] on the resonant spin Hall effect, we present detailed calculations of the spin Hall conductance in two-dimensional quantum wells in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The Rashba coupling, generated by spin-orbit interaction in wells lacking bulk inversion symmetry, introduces a degeneracy of Zeeman-split Landau levels at certain magnetic fields. This degeneracy, if occuring at the Fermi energy, will induce a resonance in the spin Hall conductance below a characteristic temperature of order of the Zeeman energy. At very low temperatures, the spin Hall current is highly non-ohmic. The Dresselhaus coupling due to the lack of structure inversion symmetry partially or completely suppresses the spin Hall resonance. The condition for the resonant spin Hall conductance in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus couplings is derived using a perturbation method. In the presence of disorder, we argue that the resonant spin Hall conductance occurs when the two Zeeman split extended states near the Fermi level becomes degenerate due to the Rashba coupling and that the the quantized charge Hall conductance changes by 2e^2/h instead of e^2/h as the magnetic field changes through the resonant field.

Reply to the comment on "Do intradot electron-electron interactions induce dephasing?"

In the comment by Konig, Gefen, and Silva, their main point is to question the approximation we used in solving the Green's function. They believe that this approximative method is inappropriate to describe spin-flip-related dephasing processes caused by intradot interaction, so they believe that our conclusions are ill-founded because of that. We agree that we indeed used an approximation in calculating the Green's function. However, we believe our approximation to be reasonable and the main conclusion, namely, an intradot electron-electron interaction can not induce dephasing, should hold. In particular, we emphasize that we have taken the higher-order terms in solving the Green's function than appeared in their previous publications. We will compare the approximation used their papers with that in our work.

Do intradot electron-electron interactions induce dephasing?

We investigate the degree of coherence of electronic transport through a quantum dot (QD) in the presence of an intradot electron-electron interaction. By using an open multi-terminal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) setup, we find that the intradot interaction does not induce any dephasing effect and the electron transport through the QD is fully coherent. We also observe that the asymmetric amplitude of the AB oscillation in the conductance through the two-terminal AB setup originates from the interplay between the confined structure and the electron-electron interaction. Thus, one can not associate a dephasing process with this asymmetric amplitude, as has been done in previous studies.

Anti-Resonance and the 0.7 Anomaly in Conductance through a Quantum Point Contact

We investigate the transmission of electrons through a quantum point contact by using a quasi-one-dimensional model with a local bound state below the band bottom. While the complete transmission in lower channels gives rise to plateaus of conductance at multiples of $2e^{2}/h$, the electrons in the lowest channel are scattered by the local bound state when it is singly occupied. This scattering produces a wide zero-transmittance (anti-resonance) for a singlet formed by tunneling and local electrons, and has no effect on triplets, leading to an exact $0.75(2e^{2}/h)$ shoulder prior to the first $2e^{2}/h$ plateau. Formation of a Kondo singlet from electrons in the Fermi sea screens the local moment and reduces the effects of anti-resonance, complementing the shoulder from 0.75 to 1 at low temperatures.

Resonant Spin Hall Conductance in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems with Rashba Interaction in a Perpendicular Magnetic Field

We study transport properties of a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a perpendicular magnetic field. The spin orbit coupling competes with Zeeman splitting to introduce additional degeneracies between different Landau levels at certain magnetic fields. This degeneracy, if occuring at the Fermi level, gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance, whose height is divergent as 1/T and whose weight is divergent as $-\ln T$ at low temperatures. The Hall conductance is unaffected by the Rashba coupling.

Spin current in the Kondo lattice model

By using the projection operator technique it is observed that the strong Hund's rule coupling and s-d interaction in transition metal elements may lead to an effective coupling between the spin current and spin spirality. As a result, the spin spirality can be regarded as a driving force to produce a spin current. The spin current may give rise to a novel type of field acting on the spins. A spin battery is designed based on the interactions between the spin current and spin spirality.

The effect of inter-Landau-band mixing on extended states in quantum Hall system

The effect of inter-Landau-band mixing on electron localization in an integer quantum Hall system is studied. We find that mixing of localized states with {\it opposite chirality} tends to delocalize the states. This delocalization effect survives the quantum treatment. Extended states form bands because of this mixing, as we show through a numerical calculation on a two-channel network model. Based on this result, we propose a new phase diagram with a narrow {\it metallic} phase that separates any neighboring QH phases from each other and also separates each of them from the insulating phase. We reanalyzed the data from recent non-scaling experiments, and show that they are {\it consistent} with our theory.

Spin Current Through a Magnetic-Oscillating Quantum Dot

Non-equilibrium spin transport through an interacting quantum dot is analyzed. The coherent spin oscillations in the dot provide a generating source for spin current. In the interacting regime, the Kondo effect is influenced in a significant way by the presence of the precessing magnetic field. In particular, when the precession frequency is tuned to resonance between spin up and spin down states of the dot, Kondo singularity for each spin splits into a superposition of two resonance peaks. The Kondo-type cotunneling contribution is manifested by a large enhancement of the pumped spin current in the strong coupling, low temperature regime.

Surface Phase Transitions Induced by Electron Mediated Adatom-Adatom Interaction

We propose that the indirect adatom-adatom interaction mediated by the conduction electrons of a metallic surface is responsible for the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}\Leftrightarrow 3\times 3$ structural phase transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111). When the indirect interaction overwhelms the local stress field imposed by the substrate registry, the system suffers a phonon instability, resulting in a structural phase transition in the adlayer. Our theory is capable of explaining all the salient features of the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}\Leftrightarrow 3\times 3$ transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111), and is in principle applicable to a wide class of systems whose surfaces are metallic before the transition.

Radiation-Induced "Zero-Resistance State" and the Photon Assisted Transport

We demonstrate that the radiation induced "zero-resistance state" observed in a two-dimensional electron gas is a result of the non-trivial structure of the density of states of the systems and the photon assisted transport. A toy model of a structureless quantum tunneling junction where the system has oscillatory density of states catches most of the important features of the experiments. We present a generalized Kubo-Greenwood conductivity formula for the photon assisted transport in a general system, and show essentially the same nature of the transport anomaly in a uniform system.

Reply to Comment on: "Radiation-Induced 'Zero-Resistance State' and the Photon Assisted Transport"

We show that the comment by A.F. Volkov ignores a delicate issue in the conductance measurement for a hall bar system. In such system, $ρ_{xx}\approx ρ_{xy}^{2}σ_{xx}$ while $σ_{xy}\gg σ_{xx}$, as correctly pointed out in Ref.3. We clarify that the so called "zero resistance state" is actually a "zero conductance state". A discussion concerning the phase transition induced by the negative conductance is presented.
