Two-dimensional Superconductivity from Dimerization of Atomically Ordered AuTe2Se4/3 Cubes

The emergent phenomena such as superconductivity and topological phase transitions can be observed in strict two-dimensional crystalline matters. Artificial interfaces and one atomic thickness layers are typical 2D materials of this kind. Although having 2D characters, most bulky layered compounds, however, do not possess these striking properties. Here, we report the 2D superconductivity in bulky AuTe2Se4/3,where the reduction in dimensionality is achieved through inducing the elongated covalent Te-Te bonds. The atomic-resolution images reveal that the Au, Te and Se are atomically ordered in a cube, among which are Te-Te bonds of 3.18 A and 3.28 A. The superconductivity at 2.85 K is discovered, which is unraveled to be the quasi-2D nature owing to the BKT topological transition. The nesting of nearly parallel Fermi sheets could give rise to strong electron-phonon coupling. It is proposed to further depleting the thickness could result in more topologically-related phenomena.

Observation of the doubly radiative decay $η^{\prime}\to γγπ^0$

Based on a sample of $1.31$ billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the study of the doubly radiative decay $η^\prime\to γγπ^0$ for the first time, where the $η^\prime$ meson is produced via the $J/ψ\to γη^\prime$ decay. The branching fraction of $η^\prime\to γγπ^0$ inclusive decay is measured to be ${\cal B}(η^\prime\to γγπ^0)_{\text{Incl.}}$ = $(3.20\pm0.07\mbox{(stat)}\pm0.23\mbox{(sys)})\times 10^{-3}$, while the branching fractions of the dominant process $η^\prime\rightarrowγω$ and the non-resonant component are determined to be ${\cal B}(η^\prime\to γω)\times {\cal B}(ω\to γπ^0) = (23.7 \pm1.4\mbox{(stat)}\pm1.8\mbox{(sys)})\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(η^\prime\to γγπ^0)_{\text{NR}} = (6.16\pm0.64\mbox{(stat)} \pm0.67\mbox{(sys)})\times 10^{-4}$, respectively. In addition, the $M^2_{γγ}$-dependent partial widths of the inclusive decay are also presented.

Luminous and high-frequency peaked blazars: the origin of the $γ$-ray emission from PKS 1424+240

The current generation of Cherenkov telescopes, together with Fermi-LAT, have greatly increased our knowledge of $γ$-ray blazars. Among them, the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object (HBL) PKS1424+240 (z $\simeq$ 0.6) is the farthest persistent emitter of very-high-energy (VHE; E $\geq$ 100 GeV) $γ$-ray photons. Current emission models can satisfactorily reproduce typical blazar emission assuming that the dominant emission process is synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) in HBLs; and external-inverse-Compton (EIC) in LBLs and FSRQs. Hadronic models are also able to correctly reproduce the $γ$-ray emission from blazars, although they are in general disfavoured for bright quasars and rapid flares. The blazar PKS1424+240 is a rare example of a luminous HBL, and we aim to determine which is the emission process most likely responsible for its $γ$-ray emission. This will impact more generally our comprehension of blazar emission models, and how they are related to the luminosity of the source and the peak frequency. We investigate different blazar emission models applied to the SED of PKS1424+240. Among leptonic models, we study a 1-zone SSC model, a 2-zone SSC model, and an EIC model. We then investigate a blazar hadronic model, and finally a scenario in which the $γ$-ray emission is associated with cascades in the line-of-sight produced by cosmic rays from the source. After a systematic study of the parameter space of the one-zone SSC model, we conclude that this scenario is not compatible with $γ$-ray observations of PKS1424+240. A two-zone SSC scenario can alleviate this issue, as well as an EIC solution. For the latter, the external photon field is assumed to be the infra-red radiation from the dusty torus. Alternatively, hadronic models can satisfactorily reproduce the $γ$-ray emission from PKS1424+240, both as in-source emission and as cascade emission.

Observation of $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηh_{c}$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.085 to 4.600 GeV

We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow ηh_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9.5^{+2.2}_{-2.0} \pm 2.7)$ pb. Evidence for $ηh_c$ is observed at $\sqrt{s}=4.358$ GeV with a Born cross section of $(10.0^{+3.1}_{-2.7} \pm 2.6)$ pb, and upper limits on the production cross section at other center-of-mass energies between 4.085 and 4.600 GeV are determined.

Beam Energy Dependence of Jet-Quenching Effects in Au+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{ \mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV

We report measurements of the nuclear modification factor, $R_{ \mathrm{CP}}$, for charged hadrons as well as identified $π^{+(-)}$, $K^{+(-)}$, and $p(\overline{p})$ for Au+Au collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{ \mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV. We observe a clear high-$p_{\mathrm{T}}$ net suppression in central collisions at 62.4 GeV for charged hadrons which evolves smoothly to a large net enhancement at lower energies. This trend is driven by the evolution of the pion spectra, but is also very similar for the kaon spectra. While the magnitude of the proton $R_{ \mathrm{CP}}$ at high $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ does depend on collision energy, neither the proton nor the anti-proton $R_{ \mathrm{CP}}$ at high $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ exhibit net suppression at any energy. A study of how the binary collision scaled high-$p_{\mathrm{T}}$ yield evolves with centrality reveals a non-monotonic shape that is consistent with the idea that jet-quenching is increasing faster than the combined phenomena that lead to enhancement.

Observation of the helicity-selection-rule suppressed decay of the $χ_{c2}$ charmonium state

The decays of $χ_{c2}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$, $K_{S} K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ and $π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ are studied with the $ψ(3686)$ data samples collected with the Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII). For the first time, the branching fractions of $χ_{c2}\to K^{\ast}\overline{K}$, $χ_{c2}\to a_{2}^{\pm}(1320)π^{\mp}/a_{2}^{0}(1320)π^{0}$ and $χ_{c2}\to ρ(770)^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ are measured. Here $K^{\ast}\overline{K}$ denotes both $K^{\ast\pm}K^{\mp}$ and $K^{\ast 0}\overline{K}{}^{0}+c.c.$, and $K^{\ast}$ denotes the resonances $K^{\ast}(892)$, $K^{\ast}_{2}(1430)$ and $K^{\ast}_{3}(1780)$. The observations indicate a strong violation of the helicity selection rule in $χ_{c2}$ decays into vector and pseudoscalar meson pairs. The measured branching fractions of $χ_{c2}\to K^{\ast}(892)\overline{K}$ are more than 10 times larger than the upper limit of $χ_{c2}\to ρ(770)^{\pm}π^{\mp}$, which is so far the first direct observation of a significant $U$-spin symmetry breaking effect in charmonium decays.

Determination of spin and parity of the $Z_c(3900)$

The spin and parity of the $Z_c(3900)^\pm$ state are determined to be $J^P=1^+$ with a statistical significance larger than $7σ$ over other quantum numbers in a partial wave analysis of the process $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-J/ψ$. We use a data sample of 1.92 fb$^{-1}$ accumulated at $\sqrt{s}=4.23$ and 4.26 GeV with the BESIII experiment. When parameterizing the $Z_c(3900)^\pm$ with a Flatte-like formula, we determine its pole mass $M_\textrm{pole}=(3881.2\pm4.2_\textrm{stat}\pm52.7_\textrm{syst})\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ and pole width $Γ_\textrm{pole}=(51.8\pm4.6_\textrm{stat}\pm36.0_\textrm{syst})\textrm{MeV}$. We also measure cross sections for the process $e^+e^-\to Z_c(3900)^+π^-+c.c.\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ and determine an upper limit at the 90\% confidence level for the process $e^+e^-\to Z_c(4020)^+π^-+c.c.\to J/ψπ^+π^-$.

Study of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΣ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ and $Ξ^0\barΞ^{0}$

We study the decays of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ to the final states $Σ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ and $Ξ^0\barΞ^{0}$ based on a single baryon tag method using data samples of $(1310.6 \pm 7.0) \times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ and $(447.9 \pm 2.9) \times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decays to $Σ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ are observed for the first time. The measured branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΞ^0\barΞ^{0}$ are in good agreement with, and much more precise, than the previously published results. The angular parameters for these decays are also measured for the first time. The measured angular decay parameter for $J/ψ\rightarrowΣ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$, $α=-0.64 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.10$, is found to be negative, different to the other decay processes in this measurement. In addition, the "12\% rule" and isospin symmetry in the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΞ\barΞ$ and $Σ(1385)\barΣ(1385)$ systems are tested.

High-temperature quantum oscillations caused by recurring Bloch states in graphene superlattices

Cyclotron motion of charge carriers in metals and semiconductors leads to Landau quantization and magneto-oscillatory behavior in their properties. Cryogenic temperatures are usually required to observe these oscillations. We show that graphene superlattices support a different type of quantum oscillations that do not rely on Landau quantization. The oscillations are extremely robust and persist well above room temperature in magnetic fields of only a few T. We attribute this phenomenon to repetitive changes in the electronic structure of superlattices such that charge carriers experience effectively no magnetic field at simple fractions of the flux quantum per superlattice unit cell. Our work points at unexplored physics in Hofstadter butterfly systems at high temperatures.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 4. Deciphering the Nature of the Higgs Sector

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

Observation of $ψ(3686) \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}χ_{cJ}$ and $χ_{cJ} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}J/ψ$

Using $4.479 \times 10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we search for the decays $ψ(3686) \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}χ_{c0,1,2}$ and $χ_{c0,1,2} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}J/ψ$. The decays $ψ(3686) \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}χ_{c0,1,2}$ and $χ_{c0,1,2} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}J/ψ$ are observed for the first time. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}χ_{c0,1,2}) = (11.7 \pm 2.5 \pm 1.0)\times10^{-4}$, $(8.6 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.6)\times10^{-4}$, $(6.9 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.6)\times10^{-4}$, and $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0,1,2} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}J/ψ) = (1.51 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.13)\times10^{-4}$, $(3.73 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.25)\times10^{-3}$, $(2.48 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.16)\times10^{-3}$. The ratios of the branching fractions $\frac{\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}χ_{c0,1,2})}{\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \rightarrow γχ_{c0,1,2})}$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0,1,2} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}J/ψ)}{\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0,1,2} \rightarrow γJ/ψ)}$ are also reported.

Amplitude analysis of $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} π^{+} π^{+} π^{-}$

We present an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} π^{+} π^{+} π^{-}$ based on a data sample of 2.93 ${\mbox{\,fb}^{-1}}$ acquired by the BESIII detector at the $ψ(3770)$ resonance. With a nearly background free sample of about 16000 events, we investigate the substructure of the decay and determine the relative fractions and the phases among the different intermediate processes. Our amplitude model includes the two-body decays $D^{0} \rightarrow \bar{K}^{*0}ρ^{0}$, $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-}a_{1}^{+}(1260)$ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{1}^{-}(1270)π^{+}$, the three-body decays $D^{0} \rightarrow \bar{K}^{*0}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}ρ^{0}$, as well as the four-body decay $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{-}$. The dominant intermediate process is $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-}a_{1}^{+}(1260)$, accounting for a fit fraction of $54.6\%$.

Improved measurements of branching fractions for $η_c\toϕϕ$ and $ωϕ$

Using $(223.7\pm1.4)\times10^6$ J/$ψ$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector, we study $η_c$ decays to $ϕϕ$ and $ωϕ$ final states. The branching fraction of $η_c\toϕϕ$ is measured to be $Br(η_c\toϕϕ)=(2.5\pm0.3^{+0.3}_{-0.7}\pm0.6)\times10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is from the uncertainty of $Br(J/ψ\toγη_c)$. No significant signal for the double OZI-suppressed decay of $η_c\toωϕ$ is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be $Br(η_c\toωϕ)<2.5\times 10^{-4}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

Electronically driven nematicity in FeSe Films on SrTiO3

The intriguing role of nematicity in iron-based superconductors, defined as broken rotational symmetry below a characteristic temperature, is an intensely investigated contemporary subject. Nematicity is closely connected to the structural transition, however, it is highly doubtful that the lattice degree of freedom is responsible for its formation, given the accumulating evidence for the observed large anisotropy. Here we combine molecular beam epitaxy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy together to study the nematicity in multilayer FeSe films on SrTiO3. Our results demonstrate direct connection between electronic anisotropy in momentum space and standing waves in real space at atomic scale. The lifting of orbital degeneracy of dxz/dyz bands gives rise to a pair of Dirac cone structures near the zone corner, which causes energy-independent unidirectional interference fringes, observed in real space as standing waves by scattering electrons off C2 domain walls and Se-defects. On the other hand, the formation of C2 nematic domain walls unexpectedly shows no correlation with lattice strain pattern, which is induced by the lattice mismatch between the film and substrate. Our results establish a clean case that the nematicity is driven by electronic rather than lattice degrees of freedom in FeSe films.

Measurement of $D^0$ azimuthal anisotropy at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV

We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. The $D^0$ $v_2$ as a function of transverse kinetic energy ($m_{\rm T} - m_0$, where $m_{\rm T} = \sqrt{p_{\rm T}^2 + m_0^2}$) is consistent with that of light mesons in 10--40\% centrality Au+Au collisions. These results suggest that charm quarks have achieved local thermal equilibrium with the medium created in such collisions. Several theoretical models, with the temperature--dependent, dimensionless charm spatial diffusion coefficient ($2πTD_s$) in the range of $\sim$2--12, are able to simultaneously reproduce our $D^0$ $v_2$ result and our previously published results for the $D^0$ nuclear modification factor.

Measurement of higher-order multipole amplitudes in $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c1,2}$ with $χ_{c1,2}\toγJ/ψ$ and search for the transition $η_{c}(2S)\toγJ/ψ$

Using 106~million $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we measure multipole amplitudes for the decay $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c1,2}\toγγJ/ψ$ beyond the dominant electric-dipole amplitudes. The normalized magnetic-quadrupole amplitude for $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c1,2}\rightarrowγγJ/ψ$ and the normalized electric-octupole amplitudes for $ψ(3686)rightarrowγχ_{c2}$,~$χ_{c2}\rightarrowγJ/ψ$ are determined. The M2 amplitudes for $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c1,2}\rightarrowγJ/ψ$ are found to differ significantly from zero and are consistent with theoretical predictions. We also obtain the ratios of M2 contributions of $ψ(3686)$ and $J/ψ$ decays to $χ_{c1,2}$, $b_{2}^{1}/b_{2}^{2} = 1.35\pm0.72$ and $a_{2}^{1}/a_{2}^{2} = 0.617\pm0.083$, which agree well with theoretical expectations. By considering the multipole contributions of $χ_{c1,2}$, we measure the product branching fractions for the cascade decays $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c0,1,2}\toγγJ/ψ$ and search for the process $η_{c}(2S)\toγJ/ψ$ through $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγη_{c}(2S)$. The product branching fraction for $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c0}\toγγJ/ψ$ is 3$σ$ larger than published measurements, while those of $ψ(3686)rightarrowγχ_{c1,2}\toγγJ/ψ$ are consistent. No significant signal for the decay $ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S)\toγγJ/ψ$ is observed, and the upper limit of the product branching fraction at the 90\% confidence level is determined.

Prospects for CTA observations of the young SNR RX J1713.7-3946

We perform simulations for future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observations of RX~J1713.7$-$3946, a young supernova remnant (SNR) and one of the brightest sources ever discovered in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. Special attention is paid to explore possible spatial (anti-)correlations of gamma rays with emission at other wavelengths, in particular X-rays and CO/H{\sc i} emission. We present a series of simulated images of RX J1713.7$-$3946 for CTA based on a set of observationally motivated models for the gamma-ray emission. In these models, VHE gamma rays produced by high-energy electrons are assumed to trace the non-thermal X-ray emission observed by {\it XMM-Newton}, whereas those originating from relativistic protons delineate the local gas distributions. The local atomic and molecular gas distributions are deduced by the NANTEN team from CO and H{\sc i} observations. Our primary goal is to show how one can distinguish the emission mechanism(s) of the gamma rays (i.e., hadronic vs leptonic, or a mixture of the two) through information provided by their spatial distribution, spectra, and time variation. This work is the first attempt to quantitatively evaluate the capabilities of CTA to achieve various proposed scientific goals by observing this important cosmic particle accelerator.

Study of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decay to $Λ\barΛ$ and $Σ^0\barΣ^0$ final states

Using $1310.6\times10^6$ $J/ψ$ and $447.9\times10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider, the branching fractions and the angular distributions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $Λ\barΛ$ and $Σ^0\barΣ^0$ final states are measured. The branching fractions are in agreement with, and much more precise than, the averages of previously published results. The polar angular distributions of $ψ(3686)$ decays are measured for the first time, while those of $J/ψ$ decays are measured with much improved precision. In addition, the ratios of branching fractions $\frac{\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toΛ\barΛ)}{\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\toΛ\barΛ)}$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toΣ^0\barΣ^0)}{\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\toΣ^0\barΣ^0)}$ are determined to test the "12\% rule".
