On the influence of the Sun on the rapid variability of compact extragalactic sources

Starting from December 2004, a program for the monitoring of intraday variable sources at a frequency of 5 GHz was performed at the Urumqi Observatory. The analysis of the variability characteristics of the flat-spectrum radio source AO 0235+164 revealed the existence of an annual cycle in the variability amplitude. This appears to correlate with the solar elongation of the source. A thorough analysis of the results of the MASIV IDV survey --- which provides the variability characteristics of a large sample of compact radio sources --- confirms that there is a small but detectable component of the observed fractional modulation which increases with decreasing solar elongation. We discuss the hypothesis that the phenomenon is related to interplanetary scintillation.

Radio variability of 1st 3-months Fermi blazars at 5 GHz: affected by interstellar scintillation?

Blazars from the first-three-months Fermi-AGN list were observed with the Urumqi 25m radio telescope at 5GHz in IDV (Intra-Day Variability) mode and inter-month observation mode. A significant correlation between the flux density at 5GHz and the gamma-ray intensity for the Fermi-LAT detected blazars is seen. There is a higher IDV detection rate in Fermi detected blazars than those reported for other samples. Stronger variability appears at lower Galactic latitudes; IDV appears to be stronger in weaker sources, indicating that the variability is affected by interstellar scintillation.

Surface Melting of Electronic Order

We report temperature-dependent surface x-ray scattering studies of the orbital ordered surface in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$. We find that the interfacial width of the electronic order grows as the bulk ordering temperature is approached from below, though the bulk correlation length remains unchanged. Close to the transition, the surface is so rough that there is no well-defined electronic surface, despite the presence of bulk electronic order, that is the electronic surface has melted. Above the bulk transition, finite-sized isotropic fluctuations of orbital order are observed, with a correlation length equal to that of the electronic surfaces' in-plane correlation length at the transition temperature.

Coherent magnetization precession in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As induced by picosecond acoustic pulses

We show that the magnetization of a thin ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As layer can be modulated by picosecond acoustic pulses. In this approach a picosecond strain pulse injected into the structure induces a tilt of the magnetization vector M, followed by the precession of M around its equilibrium orientation. This effect can be understood in terms of changes in magneto-crystalline anisotropy induced by the pulse. A model where only one anisotropy constant is affected by the strain pulse provides a good description of the observed time-dependent response.

Ion-beam modification of the magnetic properties of GaMnAs epilayers

We study the controlled introduction of defects in GaMnAs by irradiating the samples with energetic ion beams, which modify the magnetic properties of the DMS. Our study focuses on the low-carrier-density regime, starting with as-grown GaMnAs films and decreasing even further the number of carriers, through a sequence of irradiation doses. We did a systematic study of magnetization as a function of temperature and of the irradiation ion dose. We also performed in-situ room temperature resistivity measurements as a function of the ion dose. We observe that both magnetic and transport properties of the samples can be experimentally manipulated by controlling the ion-beam parameters. For highly irradiated samples, the magnetic measurements indicate the formation of magnetic clusters together with a transition to an insulating state. The experimental data are compared with mean-field calculations for magnetization. The independent control of disorder and carrier density in the calculations allows further insight on the individual role of this two factors in the ion-beam-induced modification of GaMnAs.

Structure, spectra and variability of some GPS radio sources

We report the results of multifrequency-VLBI observations of GHz-Peaked-Spectrum (GPS) radio sources. The VLBI structure and component spectra of some GPS sources are presented. Our VLBI results show that about 80% of the GPS galaxies exhibit a compact double or CSO-like structure, while the GPS quasars tend to show a core-jet. The component spectra of the GPS galaxies are often steep/convex, and the core has a flat spectrum but it is usually hidden or weak. In addition, we studied the variability of GPS sources by comparing new flux density measures, acquired with the Urumqi 25m telescope at 4.85 GHz, with previous 87GB data. The results show that 44% of the GPS quasars varied higher than 10% in passed 20 years, while the fraction is only 12% for the GPS galaxies meaning that the GPS quasars are much more variable than GPS galaxies. In total, 25% of GPS sources show >10% variability at 4.85 GHz in our sample.

VLBI observation of giant radio galaxy J1313+696 at 2.3/8.4 GHz

We report the result of VLBI observation of the giant radio galaxy J1313+696 (4C +69.15) at 2.3/8.4 GHz, only the core component of the giant radio galaxy was detected in the VLBI observation at the dual frequencies. The result shows a steep spectrum core with $α=-0.82$ ($S \propto ν^α$) between 2.3 GHz and 8.4 GHz. The steep spectrum core may be a sign of renewed activity. Considering also the upper limit flux density of 2.0 mJy at 0.6 GHz from Konar et al. 2004 the core has a GHz-peaked spectrum, implying that the core is compact and absorbed. Further high resolution VLBI observations are needed to identify if the steep spectrum core is consisting of a core and steep spectrum jet.

The follow-up EVN observations of twelve GPS radio sources at 5 GHz

We defined a sub-sample of twelve GPS sources which have not been observed with the VLBI before, from the Parkes half-Jansky sample, and carried out VLBI observations at 1.6 GHz and 5 GHz with the European VLBI Network (EVN) in 2006 and 2008, respectively, to classify the source structure and to find compact symmetric objects (CSOs). Additionally, we carried out the 4.85 GHz flux density observations for these sources with the Urumqi 25-m telescope between the years 2007 and 2009 to study whether there is any variability in the total flux density of the GPS sources. The results of the 5 GHz VLBI observations and total flux densities of these sources are presented in this paper. From the VLBI morphologies, the spectral indices of components and the total flux variability of the twelve targets, we firmly classify three sources J0210+0419, J1135$-$0021, and J2058+0540 as CSOs, and classify J1057+0012, J1203+0414, and J1600$-$0037 as core-jet sources. The others J0323+0534, J0433$-$0229, J0913+1454, J1109+1043, and J1352+0232 are labelled CSO candidates, and J1352+1107 is a complex feature. Apart from core-jet sources, the total flux densities of the CSOs and candidates are quite stable at 5 GHz both during a long-term of $\sim$20 years relative to the PKS90 data and in a period between 2007 and 2009. The total flux densities are resolved-out by more than 20\% in the 5 GHz VLBI images for 6 sources, probably because of diffuse emission. In addition, we estimated the jet viewing angles $Θ$ for the confirmed CSOs by using the double-lobe flux ratio of the sources, the result being indicative of relatively large $Θ$ for the CSOs.

Pulse shape simulation for segmented true-coaxial HPGe detectors

A new package to simulate the formation of electrical pulses in segmented true-coaxial high purity germanium detectors is presented. The computation of the electric field and weighting potentials inside the detector as well as of the trajectories of the charge carriers is described. In addition, the treatment of bandwidth limitations and noise are discussed. Comparison of simulated to measured pulses, obtained from an 18-fold segmented detector operated inside a cryogenic test facility, are presented.

Derivation of a 1/r^2 potential term for QQ-bar in a potential model

We clarify the difference among potential models so far proposed to explain mass spectra of heavy-light mesons via transformations of the vacuum. Applying our idea to QQ-bar quarkonium, we obtain the extra term, 1/r^2 with positive coefficient, other than non-relativistic potential terms expected for quarkonium.

Very Long Baseline Array observations of the Intraday Variable source J1128+592

Short time-scale flux density variations of flat spectrum radio sources are often explained by the scattering of radio waves in the turbulent, ionized Interstellar Matter of the Milky Way. One of the most convincing observational arguments in favor of this is the annual modulation of the variability time-scale caused by the Earth orbital motion around the Sun. J1128+592 is an IDV source with a possible annual modulation in its variability time-scale. We observed the source in 6 epochs with the VLBA at 5, 8 and 15 GHz in total intensity and polarization. The VLBA observations revealed an east-west oriented core-jet structure. Its position angle agrees with the angle of anisotropy derived from the annual modulation model. No significant long-term structural changes were observed with VLBI on mas-scales, however, compared to archival data, the VLBI core size is expanded. This expansion offers a possible explanation to the observed decrease of the strength of IDV. VLBI polarimetry revealed significant changes in the electric vector position angle and Rotation Measure of the core and jet. Part of the observed RM variability could be attributed to a scattering screen (37 pc distance), which covers the source (core and jet) and which may be responsible for the IDV. Superposition of polarized sub-components below the angular resolution limit may affect the observed RM as well.

The radio lightcurve of SN 2008iz in M82 revealed by Urumqi observations

We report on a set of 5 GHz Urumqi observations of the galaxy M82, made between August 2005 and May 2009. From the resulting flux densities, we detect a strong flare, starting in March or April and peaking in June 2008. We identify this flare with supernova SN 2008iz. The time sampling of the radio light curve allows us to obtain information on the precursor mass-loss rate, the strength of the magnetic field in the radiating region, the explosion date, and the deceleration of the expanding shock. We also check the possible contribution of Synchrotron Self Absorption (SSA) to the radio light curve and compare our model with other observations of the supernova at 22 GHz.

Evidence for reversible control of magnetization in a ferromagnetic material via spin-orbit magnetic field

Conventional computer electronics creates a dichotomy between how information is processed and how it is stored. Silicon chips process information by controlling the flow of charge through a network of logic gates. This information is then stored, most commonly, by encoding it in the orientation of magnetic domains of a computer hard disk. The key obstacle to a more intimate integration of magnetic materials into devices and circuit processing information is a lack of efficient means to control their magnetization. This is usually achieved with an external magnetic field or by the injection of spin-polarized currents. The latter can be significantly enhanced in materials whose ferromagnetic properties are mediated by charge carriers. Among these materials, conductors lacking spatial inversion symmetry couple charge currents to spin by intrinsic spin-orbit (SO) interactions, inducing nonequilibrium spin polarization tunable by local electric fields. Here we show that magnetization of a ferromagnet can be reversibly manipulated by the SO-induced polarization of carrier spins generated by unpolarized currents. Specifically, we demonstrate domain rotation and hysteretic switching of magnetization between two orthogonal easy axes in a model ferromagnetic semiconductor.

Nonsequential Double Ionization with Polarization-gated Pulses

We investigate laser-induced nonsequential double ionization by a polarization-gated laser pulse, constructed employing two counter-rotating circularly polarized few cycle pulses with a time delay $T_{d}$. We address the problem within a classical framework, and mimic the behavior of the quantum-mechanical electronic wave packet by means of an ensemble of classical electron trajectories. These trajectories are initially weighted with the quasi-static tunneling rate, and with suitably chosen distributions for the momentum components parallel and perpendicular to the laser-field polarization, in the temporal region for which it is nearly linearly polarized. We show that, if the time delay $T_{d}$ is of the order of the pulse length, the electron-momentum distributions, as functions of the parallel momentum components, are highly asymmetric and dependent on the carrier-envelope (CE) phase. As this delay is decreased, this asymmetry gradually vanishes. We explain this behavior in terms of the available phase space, the quasi-static tunneling rate and the recollision rate for the first electron, for different sets of trajectories. Our results show that polarization-gating technique may provide an efficient way to study the NSDI dynamics in the single-cycle limit, without employing few-cycle pulses.

Carrier-mediated antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling in diluted magnetic semiconductor multilayers Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As/GaAs:Be

We use neutron reflectometry to investigate the interlayer exchange coupling between Ga$_{0.97}$Mn$_{0.03}$As ferromagnetic semiconductor layers separated by non-magnetic Be-doped GaAs spacers. Polarized neutron reflectivity measured below the Curie temperature of Ga$_{0.97}$Mn$_{0.03}$As reveals a characteristic splitting at the wave vector corresponding to twice the multilayer period, indicating that the coupling between the ferromagnetic layers are antiferromagnetic (AFM). When the applied field is increased to above the saturation field, this AFM coupling is suppressed. This behavior is not observed when the spacers are undoped, suggesting that the observed AFM coupling is mediated by charge carriers introduced via Be doping. The behavior of magnetization of the multilayers measured by DC magnetometry is consistent with the neutron reflectometry results.

Quantum interference in laser-induced nonsequential double ionization in diatomic molecules: the role of alignment and orbital symmetry

We address the influence of the orbital symmetry and of the molecular alignment with respect to the laser-field polarization on laser-induced nonsequential double ionization of diatomic molecules, in the length and velocity gauges. We work within the strong-field approximation and assume that the second electron is dislodged by electron-impact ionization, and also consider the classical limit of this model. We show that the electron-momentum distributions exhibit interference maxima and minima due to the electron emission at spatially separated centers. The interference patterns survive the integration over the transverse momenta for a small range of alignment angles, and are sharpest for parallel-aligned molecules. Due to the contributions of transverse-momentum components, these patterns become less defined as the alignment angle increases, until they disappear for perpendicular alignment. This behavior influences the shapes and the peaks of the electron momentum distributions.

A novel technique to make Ohmic contact to a buried two-dimensional electron gas in a molecular-beam-epitaxy grown $GaAs/Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$ heterostructure with Mn $δ$-doping

We report on the growth and characterization of a new Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor (DMS) heterostructure that presents a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas (2DEG) with a carrier density $n \sim 1.08 \times 10^{12} cm^{-2}$ and a mobility $μ\sim 600 cm^{2} / (Vs)$ at T $\sim$ 4.2K. As far as we know this is the highest mobility value reported in the literature for GaMnAs systems. A novel technique was developed to make Ohmic contact to the buried 2DEG without destroying the magnetic properties of our crystal.

Electron-mediated ferromagnetism and small spin-orbit interaction in a molecular-beam-epitaxy grown n-type $GaAs/Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$ heterostructure with Mn $δ$-doping

We report the first evidence of electron-mediated ferromagnetism in a molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) grown $GaAs/Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$ heterostructure with Mn $δ$-doping. The interaction between the magnetic dopants (Mn) and the Two-Dimensional Electron Gas (2DEG) realizes magnetic ordering when the temperature is below the Curie temperature ($T_{C} \sim 1.7K$) and the 2DEG is brought in close proximity to the Mn layer by gating. The Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) contribution to the total Hall resistance is shown to be about three to four orders of magnitude smaller than in the case of hole-mediated ferromagnetism indicating the presence of small spin-orbit interaction.
