Mechanical and Electronic Properties of Ferromagnetic GaMnAs Using Ultrafast Coherent Acoustic Phonons

Ultrafast two-color pump-probe measurements, involving coherent acoustic phonon (CAP) waves, have provided information simultaneously on the mechanical properties and on the electronic structure of ferromagnetic GaMnAs. The elastic constant C11 of Ga1-xMnxAs (0.03<x<0.07) are observed to be systematically smaller than those of GaAs. Both C11 and Vs of GaMnAs are found to increase with temperature (78 K<T<295 K), again in contrast to the opposite behavior in GaAs. In addition, the fundamental bandgap (at E0 critical point) of Ga1-xMnxAs is found to shift slightly to higher energies with Mn concentration.

Critical role of next-nearest-neighbor interlayer interaction in magnetic behavior of magnetic/nonmagnetic multilayers

We report magnetoresistance data in magnetic semiconductor multilayers, which exhibit a clear step-wise behavior as a function of external field. We attribute this highly non-trivial step-wise behavior to next-nearest-neighbor interlayer exchange coupling. Our microscopic calculation suggests that this next-nearest-neighbor coupling can be as large as 24% of the nearest-neighbor coupling. It is argued that such unusually long-range interaction is made possible by the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the system and by the long Fermi wavelength characteristic of magnetic semiconductors.

Correlations between the peak flux density and the position angle of inner-jet in three blazars

We aim to investigate the relation between the long-term flux density and the position angle (PA) evolution of inner-jet in blazars. We have carried out the elliptic Gaussian model-fit to the `core' of 50 blazars from 15 GHz VLBA data, and analyzed the variability properties of three blazars from the model-fit results. Diverse correlations between the long-term peak flux density and the PA evolution of the major axis of the `core' have been found in $\sim$ 20% of the 50 sources. Of them, three typical blazars have been analyzed, which also show quasi-periodic flux variations of a few years (T). The correlation between the peak flux density and the PA of inner-jet is positive for S5~0716+714, and negative for S4~1807+698. The two sources cannot be explained with the ballistic jet models, the non-ballistic models have been analyzed to explain the two sub-luminal blazars. A correlation between the peak flux density and the PA (with a T/4 time lag) of inner-jet is found in [HB89]~1823+568, this correlation can be explained with a ballistic precession jet model. All the explanations are based mainly on the geometric beaming effect; physical flux density variations from the jet base would be considered for more complicated situations in future, which could account for the no or less significance of the correlation between the peak flux density and the PA of inner-jet in the majority blazars of our sample.

New determination of the 13C(a, n)16O reaction rate and its influence on the s-process nucleosynthesis in AGB stars

We present a new measurement of the $α$-spectroscopic factor ($S_α$) and the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) for the 6.356 MeV 1/2$^+$ subthreshold state of $^{17}$O through the $^{13}$C($^{11}$B, $^{7}$Li)$^{17}$O transfer reaction and we determine the $α$-width of this state. This is believed to have a strong effect on the rate of the $^{13}$C($α$, $n$)$^{16}$O reaction, the main neutron source for {\it slow} neutron captures (the $s$-process) in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Based on the new width we derive the astrophysical S-factor and the stellar rate of the $^{13}$C($α$, $n$)$^{16}$O reaction. At a temperature of 100 MK our rate is roughly two times larger than that by \citet{cau88} and two times smaller than that recommended by the NACRE compilation. We use the new rate and different rates available in the literature as input in simulations of AGB stars to study their influence on the abundances of selected $s$-process elements and isotopic ratios. There are no changes in the final results using the different rates for the $^{13}$C($α$, $n$)$^{16}$O reaction when the $^{13}$C burns completely in radiative conditions. When the $^{13}$C burns in convective conditions, as in stars of initial mass lower than $\sim$2 $M_\sun$ and in post-AGB stars, some changes are to be expected, e.g., of up to 25% for Pb in our models. These variations will have to be carefully analyzed when more accurate stellar mixing models and more precise observational constraints are available.

Multiwavelength Intraday Variability of the BL Lac S5 0716+714

We report results from a 1 week multi-wavelength campaign to monitor the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 (on December 9-16, 2009). In the radio bands the source shows rapid (~ (0.5-1.5) day) intra-day variability with peak amplitudes of up to ~ 10 %. The variability at 2.8 cm leads by about 1 day the variability at 6 cm and 11 cm. This time lag and more rapid variations suggests an intrinsic contribution to the source's intraday variability at 2.8 cm, while at 6 cm and 11 cm interstellar scintillation (ISS) seems to predominate. Large and quasi-sinusoidal variations of ~ 0.8 mag were detected in the V, R and I-bands. The X-ray data (0.2-10 keV) do not reveal significant variability on a 4 day time scale, favoring reprocessed inverse-Compton over synchrotron radiation in this band. The characteristic variability time scales in radio and optical bands are similar. A quasi-periodic variation (QPO) of 0.9 - 1.1 days in the optical data may be present, but if so it is marginal and limited to 2.2 cycles. Cross-correlations between radio and optical are discussed. The lack of a strong radio-optical correlation indicates different physical causes of variability (ISS at long radio wavelengths, source intrinsic origin in the optical), and is consistent with a high jet opacity and a compact synchrotron component peaking at ~= 100 GHz in an ongoing very prominent flux density outburst. For the campaign period, we construct a quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distribution (SED), including gamma-ray data from the FERMI satellite. We obtain lower limits for the relativistic Doppler-boosting of delta >= 12-26, which for a BL\,Lac type object, is remarkably high.

A seasonal cycle and an abrupt change in the variability characteristics of the intraday variable source S4 0954+65

The BLLac object S4 0954+65 is one of the main targets of the Urumqi monitoring program targeting IntraDay Variable (IDV) sources. Between August 2005 and December 2009, the source was included in 41 observing sessions, carried out at a frequency of 4.8 GHz. The time analysis of the collected light curves, performed by applying both a structure function analysis and a specifically developed wavelet-based algorithm, discovered an annual cycle in the variability timescales, suggesting that there is a fundamental contribution by interstellar scintillation to the IDV pattern of the source. The combined use of the two analysis methods also revealed that there was a dramatic change in the variability characteristics of the source between February and March 2008, at the starting time of a strong outburst phase. The analysis' results suggest that the flaring state of the source coincides with the appearance of multiple timescales in its light curves, indicating that changes in the structure of the relativistically moving emitting region may strongly influence the variability observed on IDV timescales.

Intra-day variability observations of S5 0716+714 over 4.5 years at 4.8 GHz

We aim to search for evidence of annual modulation in the time scales of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714. The intra-day variability (IDV) observations were carried out monthly from 2005 to 2009, with the Urumqi 25m radio telescope at 4.8 GHz. The source has shown prominent IDV as well as long-term flux variations. The IDV time scale does show evidence in favor of an annual modulation, suggesting that the IDV of 0716+714 is dominated by interstellar scintillation. The source underwent a strong outburst phase between mid-2008 and mid-2009; a second intense flare was observed in late 2009, but no correlation between the total flux density and the IDV time scale is found, implying that the flaring state of the source does not have serious implications for the general characteristics of its intra-day variability. However, we find that the inner-jet position angle is changing throughout the years, which could result in an annual modulation noise in the anisotropic ISS model fit. There is also an indication that the lowest IDV amplitudes (rms flux density) correspond to the slowest time scales of IDV, which would be consistent with an ISS origin of the IDV of 0716+714.

Magnetically polarized Ir dopant atoms in superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We investigate the magnetic polarization of the Ir $5d$ dopant states in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x=0.027(2)$ using Ir $L_3$ edge x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Despite the fact that doping partially suppresses the antiferromagnetic transition, we find that magnetic order survives around the Ir dopant sites. The Ir states are magnetically polarized with commensurate stripe-like antiferromagnetic order and long correlations lengths, $ξ_{\text{mag}}>$ 2800 and $>$850 Å, in the $ab$-plane and along the c-axis, respectively, driven by their interaction with the Fe spins. This Ir magnetic order persists up to the Néel transition of the majority Fe spins at $T_N=74(2)$ K. At 5 K we find that magnetic order co-exists microscopically with superconductivity in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. The energy dependence of the XRMS through the Ir $L_3$ edge shows a non-Lorentzian lineshape, which we explain in terms of interference between Ir resonant scattering and Fe non-resonant magnetic scattering.

Controlling Curie temperature in (Ga,Ms)As through location of the Fermi level within the impurity band

The ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As has emerged as the most studied material for prototype applications in semiconductor spintronics. Because ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As is hole-mediated, the nature of the hole states has direct and crucial bearing on its Curie temperature TC. It is vigorously debated, however, whether holes in (Ga,Mn)As reside in the valence band or in an impurity band. In this paper we combine results of channeling experiments, which measure the concentrations both of Mn ions and of holes relevant to the ferromagnetic order, with magnetization, transport, and magneto-optical data to address this issue. Taken together, these measurements provide strong evidence that it is the location of the Fermi level within the impurity band that determines TC through determining the degree of hole localization. This finding differs drastically from the often accepted view that TC is controlled by valence band holes, thus opening new avenues for achieving higher values of TC.

Origin of Magnetic Circular Dichroism in GaMnAs: Giant Zeeman Splitting versus Spin Dependent Density of States

We present a unified interpretation of experimentally observed magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As, based on theoretical arguments, which demonstrates that MCD in this material arises primarily from a difference in the density of spin-up and spin-down states in the valence band brought about by the presence of the Mn impurity band, rather than being primarily due to the Zeeman splitting of electronic states.

Surface nanoscale axial photonics: Robust fabrication of high quality factor microresonators

Recently introduced Surface Nanoscale Axial Photonics (SNAP) makes it possible to fabricate high Q-factor microresonators and other photonic microdevices by dramatically small deformation of the optical fiber surface. To become a practical and robust technology, the SNAP platform requires methods enabling reproducible modification of the optical fiber radius at nanoscale. In this Letter, we demonstrate super-accurate fabrication of high Q-factor microresonators by nanoscale modification of the optical fiber radius and refractive index using the CO2 laser and the UV excimer laser beam exposures. The achieved fabrication accuracy is better than 2 angstroms in variation of the effective fiber radius.

Selective spin wave excitation in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As layers by picosecond strain pulses

We demonstrate selective excitation of a spin wave mode in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As film by picosecond strain pulses. For a certain range of magnetic fields applied in the layer plane only a single frequency is detected for the magnetization precession. We explain this selectivity of spin mode excitation by the necessity of spatial matching of magnon and phonon eigenfunctions, which represents a selection rule analogous to momentum conservation for magnon-phonon interaction in bulk ferromagnetic materials.

Theory of magnetization precession induced by a picosecond strain pulse in ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As

A theoretical model of the coherent precession of magnetization excited by a picosecond acoustic pulse in a ferromagnetic semiconductor layer of (Ga,Mn)As is developed. The short strain pulse injected into the ferromagnetic layer modifies the magnetocrystalline anisotropy resulting in a tilt of the equilibrium orientation of magnetization and subsequent magnetization precession. We derive a quantitative model of this effect using the Landau-Lifshitz equation for the magnetization that is precessing in the time-dependent effective magnetic field. After developing the general formalism, we then provide a numerical analysis for a certain structure and two typical experimental geometries in which an external magnetic field is applied either along the hard or the easy magnetization axis. As a result we identify three main factors, which determine the precession amplitude: the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the ferromagnetic layer, its thickness, and the strain pulse parameters.

Ionization Suppression of Diatomic Molecules in Intense Midinfrared Laser Field

Diatomic molecules (e.g., O$_2$) in intense laser field exhibit a peculiar suppressed ionization behavior compared to their companion atoms. Several physical models have been proposed to account for this suppression while no consensus has been achieved. In this letter, we aim to clarify the underlying mechanisms behind this molecular ionization suppression. Experimental data recorded at midinfrared laser wavelength and its comparison with that at near-infrared wavelength revealed a peculiar wavelength and intensity dependence of the suppressed ionization of O$_2$ with respect to its companion atom of Xe, while N$_2$ behaves like a structureless atom. It is found that the S-matrix theory calculation can reproduce well the experimental observations and unambiguously identifies the significant role of two-center interference effect in the ionization suppression of O$_2$.

CUORE crystal validation runs: results on radioactive contamination and extrapolation to CUORE background

The CUORE Crystal Validation Runs (CCVRs) have been carried out since the end of 2008 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, in order to test the performances and the radiopurity of the TeO$_2$ crystals produced at SICCAS (Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) for the CUORE experiment. In this work the results of the first 5 validation runs are presented. Results have been obtained for bulk contaminations and surface contaminations from several nuclides. An extrapolation to the CUORE background has been performed.

Crossover critical behavior of Ga1-xMnxAs

The critical behavior of Ga1-xMnxAs in a close vicinity of the Curie temperature was experimentally studied by using the thermal diffusivity measurements. Taking into account that the inverse of the thermal diffusivity has the same critical behavior as the specific heat, the critical exponent α for the samples investigated has been determined. With approaching close to the critical temperature, the crossover from the mean-field-like to the Ising-like critical behavior has been observed. From the crossover behavior the values of the Ginzburg number and the exchange interaction length in Ga1-xMnxAs with different concentrations of Mn were determined.

Unconventional Magnetism in a Nitrogen-Based Analogue of Cupric Oxide

We have investigated the magnetic properties of CuNCN, the first nitrogen-based analogue of cupric oxide, CuO. Our muon spin relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance studies reveal that classical magnetic ordering is absent down to lowest temperatures. However, large enhancement of spin correlations and unexpected inhomogeneous magnetism have been observed below 80 K. We attribute this to a peculiar fragility of the electronic state against weak perturbations due to geometrical frustration, which selects between competing spin-liquid and more conventional frozen states.

Long range magnetic ordering in Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic structure of the honeycomb lattice magnet Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a strong candidate for a realization of a gapless spin-liquid. Using resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Ir L$_3$-edge, we find 3D long range antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$=13.3 K. From the azimuthal dependence of the magnetic Bragg peak, the ordered moment is determined to be predominantly along the {\it a}-axis. Combining the experimental data with first principles calculations, we propose that the most likely spin structure is a novel "zig-zag" structure.
