First Observation of Low Energy Electron Neutrinos in a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber

The capabilities of liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) to reconstruct the spatial and calorimetric information of neutrino events have made them the detectors of choice in a number of experiments, specifically those looking to observe electron neutrino ($ν_e$) appearance. The LArTPC promises excellent background rejection capabilities, especially in this "golden" channel for both short and long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We present the first experimental observation of electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos in the ArgoNeut LArTPC, in the energy range relevant to DUNE and the Fermilab Short Baseline Neutrino Program. We have selected 37 electron candidate events and 274 gamma candidate events, and measured an 80\% purity of electrons based on a topological selection. Additionally, we present a of separation of electrons from gammas using calorimetric energy deposition, demonstrating further separation of electrons from background gammas.

Intrinsic Ferromagnetism in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Co:TiO$_2$

Here we present a study of magnetism in \CTO\ anatase films grown by pulsed laser deposition under a variety of oxygen partial pressures and deposition rates. Energy-dispersive spectrometry and transition electron microscopy analyses indicate that a high deposition rate leads to a homogeneous microstructure, while very low rate or postannealing results in cobalt clustering. Depth resolved low-energy muon spin rotation experiments show that films grown at a low oxygen partial pressure ($\approx 10^{-6}$ torr) with a uniform structure are fully magnetic, indicating intrinsic ferromagnetism. First principles calculations identify the beneficial role of low oxygen partial pressure in the realization of uniform carrier-mediated ferromagnetism. This work demonstrates that Co:TiO$_2$ is an intrinsic diluted magnetic semiconductor.

Convolutional Neural Networks Applied to Neutrino Events in a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber

We present several studies of convolutional neural networks applied to data coming from the MicroBooNE detector, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). The algorithms studied include the classification of single particle images, the localization of single particle and neutrino interactions in an image, and the detection of a simulated neutrino event overlaid with cosmic ray backgrounds taken from real detector data. These studies demonstrate the potential of convolutional neural networks for particle identification or event detection on simulated neutrino interactions. We also address technical issues that arise when applying this technique to data from a large LArTPC at or near ground level.

Enhancing the thermoelectric performance of a HfS2 monolayer through valley engineering

The electronic, phonon, and thermoelectric properties of a two-dimensional HfS2 monolayer are investigated by using the first-principles calculations combined with the Boltzmann transport theory. The band valleys of the HfS2 monolayer can be effectively tuned by the applied biaxial strain. The Seebeck coefficient and therefore the peak value of the power factor (with the relaxation time inserted) increase when the degeneracy of the band valleys is increased by the strain. When no strain is applied, the HfS2 monolayer is an excellent n-type thermoelectric material, while the thermoelectric performance of the p-type doped one is poor. The applied tensile strain of 6% can increase the room-temperature ZT value of the p-type doped system to 3.67, which is five times larger than that of the unstrained one. The much more balanced ZT values of the p- and n-type doping are favorable for fabrication of both p- and n-legs of thermoelectric modules. Our results indicate that the thermoelectric performance of the HfS2 monolayer can be greatly improved by the valley engineering through the method of strain.

Topological defects at octahedral tilting plethora in bi-layered perovskites

Oxygen octahedral distortions including tilts/rotations, deformations and off-centering in (layered) perovskites play the key role in their numerous functional properties. At the polar-centrosymmetric phase boundary in bi-layered perovskite Ca3-xSrxTi2O7 with x~1, we found the presence of abundant topological Z8 vortex-antivortex pairs, associated with four oxygen octahedral tilts at domains and another four different oxygen octahedral tilts at domain boundaries. Our discovery opens a new revenue to unveil topological defects associated with various types of oxygen octahedral distortions.

Study of Relay Selection for Physical-Layer Security in Buffer-Aided Relay Networks Based on the Secrecy Rate Criterion

In this paper, we investigate an opportunistic relay and jammer scheme along with relay selection algorithms based on the secrecy rate criterion in multiple-input multiple-output buffer-aided down link relay networks, which consist of one source, a number of relay nodes, legitimate users and eavesdroppers, with the constraints of physical layer security. The opportunistic relay and jammer scheme is employed to improve the transmission rate and different relay selection policies are performed to achieve better secrecy rate with the consideration of eavesdroppers. Among all the investigated relay selection policies, a relay selection policy which is developed to maximize the secrecy rate based on exhaustive searches outperforms other relay selection policies in terms of secrecy rate. Based on the secrecy rate criterion, we develop a relay selection algorithm without knowledge of the channels of the eavesdroppers. We also devise a greedy search algorithm based on the secrecy rate criterion to reduce the computational complexity of the exhaustive search technique. Simulations show the superiority of the secrecy rate criterion over competing approaches.

Domain Topology and Domain Switching Kinetics in a Hybrid Improper Ferroelectric

Charged polar interfaces such as charged ferroelectric domain walls or heterostructured interfaces of ZnO/(Zn,Mg)O and LaAlO3/SrTiO3, across which the normal component of electric polarization changes suddenly, can host large two-dimensional conduction. Charged ferroelectric walls, which are energetically unfavorable in general, were found to be mysteriously abundant in hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr)3Ti2O7 crystals. From the exploration of antiphase boundaries in bilayer-perovskites, we discover that each of four polarization-direction states is degenerated with two antiphase domains, and these eight structural variants form a Z4xZ2 domain structure with Z3 vortices and five distinct types of domain walls, whose topology is directly relevant to the presence of abundant charged walls. We also discover a zipper-like nature of antiphase boundaries; they are the reversible creation/annihilation centers of pairs of two types of ferroelectric walls (and also Z3-vortex pairs) in 90 and 180 degree polarization switching. Our results demonstrate the unexpectedly rich nature of hybrid improper ferroelectricity.

Magnetic evolution of Spinel Mn1-xZnxCr2O4 single crystals

Mn1-xZnxCr2O4 (0<x<1) single crystals have been grown by the chemical vapor transport (CVT) method. The crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal transport properties of the single crystals were investigated by the room-temperature X-ray diffraction, magnetization M(T) and specific heat CP(T) measurements. Mn1-xZnxCr2O4 crystals show a cubic structure, the lattice constant a decreases with the increasing content x of the doped Zn2+ ions and follows the Vegard law. Based on the magnetization and heat capacity measurements, the magnetic evolution of Mn1-xZnxCr2O4 crystals has been discussed. For 0<x<0.3, the magnetic ground state is the coexistence of the collinear ferrimagnetic order (CFIM) and spiral ferrimagnetic one (SFIM), which is similar to that of the parent MnCr2O4. When x changes from 0.3 to 0.8, the SFIM is progressively suppressed and spin glass-like behavior is observed. When x is above 0.8, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order presents. At the same time, the magnetic specific heat (Cmag.) was also investigated and the results are coincident with the magnetic measurements. The possible reasons based on the disorder effect and the reduced molecular field effect induced by the substitution of Mn2+ ions by nonmagnetic Zn2+ ones in Mn1-xZnxCr2O4 crystals have been discussed.

Spin dynamics, electronic and thermal transport properties of two-dimensional CrPS4 single crystal

2-Dimensional (2D) CrPS4 single crystals have been grown by the chemical vapor transport method. The crystallographic, magnetic, electronic and thermal transport properties of the single crystals were investigated by the room-temperature X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity \r{ho}(T), specific heat CP(T) and the electronic spin response (ESR) measurements. CrPS4 crystals crystallize into a monoclinic structure. The electrical resistivity \r{ho}(T) shows a semiconducting behavior with an energy gap Ea=0.166 eV. The antiferromagntic (AFM) transition temperature is about TN=36 K. The spin flipping induced by the applied magnetic field is observed along the c axis. The magnetic phase diagram of CrPS4 single crystal has been discussed. The extracted magnetic entropy at TN is about 10.8 J/mol K, which is consistent with the theoretical value R ln(2S + 1) for S = 3/2 of the Cr3+ ion. Based on the mean-field theory, the magnetic exchange constants J1 and Jc corresponding to the interactions of the intralayer and between layers are about 0.143 meV and -0.955 meV are obtained based on the fitting of the susceptibility above TN, which agree with the results obtained from the ESR measurements. With the help of the strain for tuning the magnetic properties, monolayer CrPS4 may be a promising candidate to explore 2D magnetic semiconductors.

1T`-MoTe2 single crystal: a possible topological superconductor

We measured the magnetoresistvity (MR) properties of the 1T`-MoTe2 single crystal under the magnetic field up to 33 T.By analyzing the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations of MR at the low temperature, single Fermi surface is revealed. From the strong oscillatory component of the longitudinal resistance ΔRxx,a linear dependence of the Landau index n on 1/B is obtained. The intercept of the Landau index plot is between 3/8 and 1/2.This clearly reveals a nontrivial π Berry`s phase, which is a distinguished feature of Dirac fermions. Accompanied by the superconductivity observed at TC=0.1 K, 1T`-MoTe2 may be a promising candidate of the topological superconductor.

Superconductivity enhancement in the S-doped Weyl semimetal candidate MoTe2

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDs) MoTe2 has attracted much attention due to its predicted Weyl semimetal (WSM) state and a quantum spin Hall insulator in bulk and monolayer form, respectively. We find that the superconductivity in MoTe2 single crystal can be much enhanced by the partial substitution of the Te ions by the S ones. The maximum of the superconducting temperature TC of MoTe1.8S0.2 single crystal is about 1.3 K. Compared with the parent MoTe2 single crystal (TC=0.1 K), nearly 13-fold in TC is improved in MoTe1.8S0.2 one. The superconductivity has been investigated by the resistivity and magnetization measurements. MoTe2-xSx single crystals belong to weak coupling superconductors and the improvement of the superconductivity may be related to the enhanced electron-phonon coupling induced by the S-ion substitution. A dome-shape superconducting phase diagram is obtained in the S-doped MoTe2 single crystals. MoTe2-xSx materials may provide a new platform for our understanding of superconductivity phenomena and topological physics in TMDs.

Superconductivity in CaSn3 single crystal with a AuCu3-type structure

We report the superconductivity of the CaSn3 single crystal with a AuCu3-type structure, namely cubic space group Pm3m. The superconducting transition temperature TC=4.2 K is determined by the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The magnetization versus magnetic field (M-H) curve at low temperatures shows the typical-II superconducting behavior. The estimated lower and upper critical fields are about 125 Oe and 1.79 T, respectively. The penetration depth λ(0) and coherence length ξ(0) are calculated to be approximately 1147 nm and 136 nm by the Ginzburg-Landau equations. The estimated Sommerfeld coefficient of the normal state γ_N is about 2.9 mJ/mol K2. ΔC/γNTC =1.13 and λep=0.65 suggest that CaSn3 single crystal is a weakly coupled superconductor. Electronic band structure calculations show a complex multi-sheet Fermi surface formed by three bands and a low density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, which is consistent with the experimental results. Based on the analysis of electron phonon coupling of AX3 compounds (A=Ca, La, and Y; X=Sn and Pb), we theoretically proposed a way to increase TC in the system.

Spin-orbit coupling enhanced superconductivity in Bi-rich compounds ABi$_{3}$ (A=Sr and Ba)

Recently, Bi-based compounds have attracted attentions because of the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In this work, we figured out the role of SOC in ABi$_{3}$ (A=Sr and Ba) by theoretical investigation of the band structures, phonon properties, and electron-phonon coupling. Without SOC, strong Fermi surface nesting leads to phonon instabilities in ABi$_{3}$. SOC suppresses the nesting and stabilizes the structure. Moreover, without SOC the calculation largely underestimates the superconducting transition temperatures ($T_{c}$), while with SOC the calculated $T_{c}$ are very close to those determined by measurements on single crystal samples. The SOC enhanced superconductivity in ABi$_{3}$ is due to not only the SOC induced phonon softening, but also the SOC related increase of electron-phonon coupling matrix elements. ABi$_{3}$ can be potential platforms to construct heterostructure of superconductor/topological insulator to realize topological superconductivity.

Successive Optimization Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding Strategies for Physical-Layer Security in Wireless Networks

In this paper, we propose successive optimization non-linear precoding strategies for physical-layer security in wireless networks. We also investigate different precoding techniques for multi-user MIMO systems under various conditions of channel state information (CSI) between the access point and the users and the eavesdroppers. A non-linear precoding technique based on Successive Optimization Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding (SO-THP) and Simplified Generalized Matrix Inversion (S-GMI) technique is proposed along with a strategy for injecting artificial noise prior to transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed SO-THP+S-GMI precoding technique outperforms existing non-linear and linear precoding algorithms in terms of BER and secrecy rate performances.

Magnetic fan structures in Ba$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$Zn$_2$Fe$_{12}$O$_{22}$ hexaferrite revealed by resonant soft X-ray diffraction

The hexaferrites are known to exhibit a wide range of magnetic structures, some of which are connected to important technological applications and display magnetoelectric properties. We present data on the low field magnetic structures stabilised in a Y-type hexaferrite as observed by resonant soft X-ray diffraction. The helical spin block arrangement that is present in zero applied magnetic field becomes fan-like as a field is applied in plane. The propagation vectors associated with each fan structure are studied as a function of field, and a new magnetic phase is reported. Mean field calculations indicate this phase should stabilise close to the boundary of the previously reported phases.

When to Bite the Bullet? - A Study of Optimal Strategies for Reducing Global Warming

This work is based on the framework proposed by Conrad (1997) to determine the optimal timing of an investment or policy to slow global warming. While Conrad formulated the problem as a stopping rule option pricing model, we treat the policy decision by considering the total damage function that enables us to make some interesting extensions to the original formulation. We show that Conrad's framework is equivalent to minmization of the expected value of the damage function under the stochastic optimal stopping rule. We extend Conrad's model by allowing for policy cost to grow with time. In addition to closed form solution, we also perform Monte Carlo simulations to find the distribution for the total damage and show that at higher quantiles the damage may become too large and so is the risk on the global economy. We also show that the decision to take action largely depends on the cost of the action. For example, in the case of model parameters calibrated as in Conrad (1997) with a constant cost, there is a rather long wait before the action is expected to be taken, but if the cost increases with the same rate as the global economy growth, then action has to be taken immediately to minimize the damage.

Inverse of magnetic dipole field using a reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo

We consider a three-dimensional magnetic field produced by an arbitrary collection of dipoles. Assuming the magnetic vector or its gradient tensor field is measured above the earth surface, the inverse problem is to use the measurement data to find the location, strength, orientation and distribution of the dipoles underneath the surface. We propose a reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (RJ-MCMC) algorithm for both the magnetic vector and its gradient tensor to deal with this trans-dimensional inverse problem where the number of unknowns is one of the unknowns. A special birth-death move strategy is designed to obtain a reasonable rate of acceptance for the RJ-MCMC sampling. Some preliminary results show the strength and challenges of the algorithm in inverting the magnetic measurement data through dipoles. Starting with an arbitrary single dipole, the algorithm automatically produces a cloud of dipoles to reproduce the observed magnetic field, and the true dipole distribution for a bulky object is better predicted than for a thin object. Multi-objects located at different depths remain a very challenging inverse problem.

The chiral phase transition in charge ordered 1T-TiSe2

It was recently discovered that the low temperature, charge ordered phase of 1T-TiSe2 has a chiral character. This unexpected chirality in a system described by a scalar order parameter could be explained in a model where the emergence of relative phase shifts between three charge density wave components breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice. Here, we present experimental evidence for the sequence of phase transitions predicted by that theory, going from disorder to non-chiral and finally to chiral charge order. Employing X-ray diffraction, specific heat, and electrical transport measurements, we find that a novel phase transition occurs ~7 K below the main charge ordering transition in TiSe2, in agreement with the predicted hierarchy of charge ordered phases.
