Magnetic properties changes of MnAs thin films irradiated with highly charged ions

We present the first investigation on the effect of highly charged ion bombardment on a manganese arsenide thin film. The MnAs films, 150 nm thick, are irradiated with 90 keV Ne$^{9+}$ ions with a dose varying from $1.6\times10^{12}$ to $1.6\times10^{15}$ ions/cm$^2$. The structural and magnetic properties of the film after irradiation are investigated using different techniques, namely, X-ray diffraction, magneto-optic Kerr effect and magnetic force microscope. Preliminary results are presented. From the study of the lattice spacing, we measure a change on the film structure that depends on the received dose, similarly to previous studies with other materials. Investigations on the surface show a strong modification of its magnetic properties.

High carrier mobility in transparent Ba1-xLaxSnO3 crystals with a wide band gap

We discovered that perovskite (Ba,La)SnO3 can have excellent carrier mobility even though its band gap is large. The Hall mobility of Ba0.98La0.02SnO3 crystals with the n-type carrier concentration of \sim 8-10\times10 19 cm-3 is found to be \sim 103 cm2 V-1s-1 at room temperature, and the precise measurement of the band gap Δof a BaSnO3 crystal shows Δ=4.05 eV, which is significantly larger than those of other transparent conductive oxides. The high mobility with a wide band gap indicates that (Ba,La)SnO3 is a promising candidate for transparent conductor applications and also epitaxial all-perovskite multilayer devices.

Reversible room-temperature magnetocaloric effect with large temperature span in antiperovskite compounds Ga1-xCMn3+x (x=0, 0.06, 0.07, and 0.08)

The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of Ga1-xCMn3+x have been investigated. Reversible magnetocaloric effect (MCE) occurs near the Curie temperature TC. The magnetic entropy change decreases with increasing x, though TC and magnetization increases. Meanwhile, the temperature span of vs. T plot becomes well broadened with x. Due to the competition between the broadening temperature span and decreasing, the relative cooling power (RCP) increases initially, and then decreases with increasing x. The largest RCP (2.1 J/cm3, under 45 kOe) observed when x=0.07 (TC = 296.5 K) is comparable to the contemporary magnetic refrigerant materials. Considering the reversible MCE, inexpensive and innoxious raw materials, our result suggests that Ga1-xCMn3+x can be promising candidate for magnetic refrigeration around room temperature.

Large magnetic entropy change near room temperature in antipervoskite SnCMn3

We report the observation of large magnetocaloric effect near room temperature in antipervoskite SnCMn3. The maximal magnetic entropy change at the first-order ferrimagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature (TC 279 K) is about 80.69mJ/cm3 K and 133mJ/cm3 K under the magnetic field of 20 kOe and 48 kOe, respectively. These values are close to those of typical magnetocaloric materials. The large magnetocaloric effect is associated with the sharp change of lattice, resistivity and magnetization in the vicinity of TC. Through the measurements of Seebeck coefficient and normal Hall effect, the title system is found to undergo a reconstruction of electronic structure at TC. Considering its low-cost and innocuous raw materials, Mn-based antiperovskite compounds are suggested to be appropriate for pursuing new materials with larger magnetocaloric effect.

Anisotropic, Intermediate Coupling Superconductivity in Cu0.03TaS2

The anisotropic superconducting state properties in Cu0.03TaS2 have been investigated by magnetization, magnetoresistance, and specific heat measurements. It clearly shows that Cu0.03TaS2 undergoes a superconducting transition at TC = 4.03 K. The obtained superconducting parameters demonstrate that Cu0.03TaS2 is an anisotropic type-II superconductor. Combining specific heat jump = 1.6(4), gap ratio 2/kBTC = 4.0(9) and the estimated electron-phonon coupling constant ~ 0.68, the superconductivity in Cu0.03TaS2 is explained within the intermediate coupling BCS scenario. First-principles electronic structure calculations suggest that copper intercalation of 2H-TaS2 causes a considerable increase of the Fermi surface volume and the carrier density, which suppresses the CDW fluctuation and favors the raise of TC.

Ensemble Kalman filter with the unscented transform

A modification scheme to the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is introduced based on the concept of the unscented transform (Julier et al., 2000; Julier and Uhlmann, 2004), which therefore will be called the ensemble unscented Kalman filter (EnUKF) in this work. When the error distribution of the analysis is symmetric (not necessarily Gaussian), it can be shown that, compared to the ordinary EnKF, the EnUKF has more accurate estimations of the ensemble mean and covariance of the background by examining the multidimensional Taylor series expansion term by term. This implies that, the EnUKF may have better performance in state estimation than the ordinary EnKF in the sense that the deviations from the true states are smaller. For verification, some numerical experiments are conducted on a 40-dimensional system due to Lorenz and Emanuel (Lorenz and Emanuel, 1998). Simulation results support our argument.

Single crystal growth and characterizations of Cu0.03TaS2 superconductors

Single crystal of Cu0.03TaS2 with low copper intercalated content was successfully grown via chemical iodine-vapor transport. The structural characterization results show that the copper intercalated 2H-Cu0.03TaS2 single crystal has the same structure of the CdI2-type structure as the parent 2H-TaS2 crystal. Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that 2H-Cu0.03TaS2 becomes a superconductor below 4.2 K. Besides, electrical resistivity and Hall effects results show that a charge density wave transition occurs at TCDW = 50 K.

Crystal growth and superconductivity of FeSe_x

Single crystals FeSe_x have been grown in evacuated sealed quartz tube using a NaCl/KCl flux. The products include two crystal structures of tetragon and hexagon. The electronic transport and magnetic properties measurements of FeSe_x single crystal exhibits a superconducting transition at about 10K.

An atom fiber for guiding cold neutral atoms

We present an omnidirectional matter wave guide on an atom chip. The rotational symmetry of the guide is maintained by a combination of two current carrying wires and a bias field pointing perpendicular to the chip surface. We demonstrate guiding of thermal atoms around more than two complete turns along a spiral shaped 25mm long curved path (curve radii down to 200$μ$m) at various atom--surface distances (35-450$μ$m). An extension of the scheme for the guiding of Bose-Einstein condensates is outlined.

Trapping and manipulating neutral atoms with electrostatic fields

We report on experiments with cold thermal $^7$Li atoms confined in combined magnetic and electric potentials. A novel type of three-dimensional trap was formed by modulating a magnetic guide using electrostatic fields. We observed atoms trapped in a string of up to six individual such traps, a controlled transport of an atomic cloud over a distance of 400$μ$m, and a dynamic splitting of a single trap into a double well potential. Applications for quantum information processing are discussed.

QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions - first results from SESAM

First results of a recently started simulation of full QCD with two flavours of sea-quarks at a coupling of $β= 5.6$ on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice are presented. Emphasis is laid on the statistical significance that can be achieved by an ``integrated luminosity'' of 140 TFlop$\times$hrs, for Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations at four intermediate values of $\frac{m_π}{m_ρ}$. The simulation takes place on the Quadrics QH2 at DESY/Zeuthen and DFG/Bielefeld. The performance is optimized by means of BiCGStab and the chronological inversion method of Brower et al. We discuss the systematic errors arising from lack of the molecular dynamic's reversibility on the 32-bit QH2. For plaquette and meson correlators we find integrated autocorrelation times of $< 20$ units of molecular dynamics time and exponential autocorrelation times of about $50$ units. Using these results we perform preliminary measurements of the central potential and $π$ and $ρ$ correlators on independent configurations and obtain first estimates of the lattice spacings at three values of the dynamical hopping parameter.
