SLAC UED LLRF System Upgrade

The SLAC mega-electron-volt (MeV) ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) instrument is a powerful "electron camera" for the study of time-resolved, ultrafast atomic & molecular dynamics in chemical and solid-state systems. The UED laser timing synchronization is upgraded to SLAC (Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture) ATCA based femtosecond laser timing synchronization system. UED radio frequency (RF) gun cavity low level RF (LLRF) control is also being upgraded to SLAC ATCA based LLRF system to provide improved performance and maintainability. The new laser timing synchronization and LLRF control are implemented in one ATCA crate located in the laser room. A 2nd ATCA crate is set up to monitor the Klystron and sub-booster performance. With the ATCA based RF control system, the laser timing jitter has achieved 10 fs. The UED operation beam rate is being upgraded from 180 Hz to 360 Hz, which paves the way for a further upgrade of operation beam rate to 1 kHz in the future. In this paper, we present design details and characterization results of the implementation.

Fine structure in the $α$ decay of $^{223}$U

Fine structure in the $α$ decay of $^{223}$U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{187}$Re($^{40}$Ar, p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two $α$-decay branches of $^{223}$U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of $^{219}$Th were identified by establishing the decay chain $^{223}$U $\xrightarrow{α_{1}}$ $^{219}$Th $\xrightarrow{α_{2}}$ $^{215}$Ra $\xrightarrow{α_{3}}$ $^{211}$Rn. The $α$-particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of $^{223}$U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62$^{+14}_{-10}$ $μ$s. Evolution of nuclear structure for $N$ = 131 even-$Z$ isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced $α$-decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of $^{223}$U relative to its lighter isotones $^{219}$Ra and $^{221}$Th was suggested.

Experimentally well-constrained masses of $^{27}$P and $^{27}$S: Implications for studies of explosive binary systems

The mass of $^{27}$P was predicted to impact the X-ray burst (XRB) model predictions of burst light curves and the composition of the burst ashes. To address the uncertainties and inconsistencies in the reported $^{27}$P masses in literature, a wealth of information has been extracted from the $β$-decay spectroscopy of the drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S. We determine the most precise mass excess of $^{27}$P to date to be $-659(9)$~keV, which is 63~keV (2.3$σ$) higher than the AME2016 recommended value of $-722(26)$~keV. The experimentally unknown mass excess of $^{27}$S was estimated to be 17030(400)~keV in AME2016, and we constrain this mass to be 17678(77)~keV based on the measured $β$-delayed two-proton energy. In the temperature region of $(0.06-0.3)$~GK, the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate determined in this work is significantly lower than the rate recommended in the reaction rate libraries, up to two orders of magnitude around 0.1~GK. The impact of these newly determined masses and well-constrained rate on the modeling of the explosive astrophysical scenarios has been explored by hydrodynamic nova and post-processing XRB models. No substantial change was found in the nova contribution to the synthesis of galactic $^{26}$Al or in the XRB energy generation rate, but we found that the calculated abundances of $^{26}$Al and $^{26}$Si at the last stage of XRB are increased by a factor of 2.4. We also conclude that $^{27}$S is not a significant waiting point in the rapid proton capture process.

Pressure-induced superconductivity and topological phase transitions in the topological nodal-line semimetal SrAs3

Topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSMs) are materials whose conduction and valence bands cross each other, meeting a topologically-protected closed loop rather than discrete points in the Brillouin zone (BZ). The anticipated properties for TNLSMs include drumhead-like nearly flat surface states, unique Landau energy levels, special collective modes, long-range Coulomb interactions, or the possibility of realizing high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, SrAs3 has been theoretically proposed and then experimentally confirmed to be a TNLSM. Here, we report high-pressure experiments on SrAs3, identifying a Lifshitz transition below 1 GPa and a superconducting transition accompanied by a structural phase transition above 20 GPa. A topological crystalline insulator (TCI) state is revealed by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the emergent high-pressure phase. As the counterpart of topological insulators, TCIs possess metallic boundary states protected by crystal symmetry, rather than time reversal. In consideration of topological surface states (TSSs) and helical spin texture observed in the high-pressure state of SrAs3, the superconducting state may be induced in the surface states, and is most likely topologically nontrivial, making pressurized SrAs3 a strong candidate for topological superconductor.

Simultaneous measurement of beta-delayed proton and gamma emission of $^{26}$P for $^{25}$Al($p,γ$)$^{26}$Si reaction rate

$β$ decay of $^{26}$P was used to populate the astrophysically important $E_x=$5929.4(8) keV $J^π=3{^+}$ state of $^{26}$Si. Both $β$-delayed proton at 418(8) keV and gamma ray at 1742(2) keV emitted from this state were measured simultaneously for the first time with corresponding absolute intensities of 11.1(12)\% and 0.59(44)\%, respectively. Besides, shell model calculations with weakly bound effects were performed to investigate the decay properties of other resonant states and a spin-parity of $4^+$ rather than $0^+$ was favored for the $E_x=$5945.9(40) keV state. Combining the experimental results and theoretical calculations, $^{25}$Al($p,γ$)$^{26}$Si reaction rate in explosive hydrogen burning environments was calculated and compared with previous studies.

Coexistence of spin frustration and spin unfrustration induced spontaneous exchange bias in Heusler alloys

The mechanism of spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) and the dominant factor of its blocking temperature are still unclear in Heusler alloys. Here, the related investigations are performed in Mn2Ni1.5Al0.5 Heusler alloys with SEB. The results of both magnetic measurements and first-principles calculations confirmed that spin frustrated and unfrustrated antiferromagnetic (AFM) states coexist there and they have different magnetic anisotropies, which are essential for SEB. Based on a series of measurement strategies, we demonstrate that the frustrated AFM state undergoes a first-order magnetic transition to the superferromagnet (SFM) state with the help of an external magnetic field, and SFM is retained due to the first-order property of the magnetic transition. SEB originates from the interface coupling of multiple sublattices between the unfrustrated AFM state and SFM state. By analyzing the Arrott plot using the Landau model, we found that the internal field of the system dominates the blocking temperature of SEB, which paves the way for improving the blocking temperature.

First test of a $\mathrm{CdMoO_4}$ scintillating bolometer for neutrinoless double beta decay experiments with $\mathrm{{}^{116}Cd}$ and $\mathrm{{}^{100}Mo}$ nuclides

A large cylindrical cadmium molybdate crystal with natural isotopic abundance has been used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer. The measurement was performed above ground at milli-Kelvin temperature, with simultaneous readout of the heat and the scintillation light. The energy resolution as FWHM has achieved from 5 keV (at 238 keV) to 13 keV (at 2615 keV). We present the results of the $α$ versus $β$/$γ$ events discrimination. The low internal trace contamination of the $\mathrm{CdMoO_4}$ crystal was evaluated as well. The detector performance with preliminary positive indications proves that cadmium molybdate crystal is a promising absorber for neutrinoless double beta decay scintillating bolometric experiments with $\mathrm{{}^{116}Cd}$ and $\mathrm{{}^{100}Mo}$ nuclides in the next-generation technique.

Acceleration of three-dimensional Tokamak magnetohydrodynamical code with graphics processing unit and OpenACC heterogeneous parallel programming

In this paper, the OpenACC heterogeneous parallel programming model is successfully applied to modification and acceleration of the three-dimensional Tokamak magnetohydrodynamical code (CLTx). Through combination of OpenACC and MPI technologies, CLTx is further parallelized by using multiple-GPUs. Significant speedup ratios are achieved on NVIDIA TITAN Xp and TITAN V GPUs, respectively, with very few modifications of CLTx. Furthermore, the validity of the double precision calculations on the above-mentioned two graphics cards has also been strictly verified with m/n=2/1 resistive tearing mode instability in Tokamak.

Convection in a coupled fluid-porous media system

We perform linear and nonlinear stability analysis for thermal convection in a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium. We use a coupled system, with the Navier-Stokes equations and Darcy's equation governing the free-flow and the porous regions respectively. Incorporating a dynamic pressure term in the Lions interface condition (which specifies the normal force balance across the fluid-medium interface) permits an energy bound on the typically uncooperative nonlinear advection term, enabling new nonlinear stability results. Within certain regimes, the nonlinear stability thresholds agree closely with the linear ones, and we quantify the differences that exist. We then compare stability thresholds produced by several common variants of the tangential interface conditions, using both numerics and asymptotics in the small Darcy number limit. Finally, we investigate the transition between full convection and fluid-dominated convection using both numerics and a heuristic theory. This heuristic theory is based on comparing the ratio of the Rayleigh number in each domain to its corresponding critical value, and it is shown to agree reasonably well with the numerics regarding how the transition depends on the depth ratio, the Darcy number, and the thermal-diffusivity ratio.

k-Resolved electronic structure of buried heterostructure and impurity systems by soft-X-ray ARPES

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is the main experimental tool to explore electronic structure of solids resolved in the electron momentum k . Soft-X-ray ARPES (SX-ARPES), operating in a photon energy range around 1 keV, benefits from enhanced probing depth compared to the conventional VUV-range ARPES, and elemental/chemical state specificity achieved with resonant photoemission. These advantages make SX-ARPES ideally suited for buried heterostructure and impurity systems, which are at the heart of current and future electronics. These applications are illustrated here with a few pioneering results, including buried quantum-well states in semiconductor and oxide heterostructures, their bosonic coupling critically affecting electron transport, magnetic impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors and topological materials, etc. High photon flux and detection efficiency are crucial for pushing the SX-ARPES experiment to these most photon-hungry cases.

Massive Dead Galaxies at z~2 with HST Grism Spectroscopy I. Star Formation Histories and Metallicity Enrichment

Observations have revealed massive (logM*/Msun>11) galaxies that were already dead when the universe was only ~2 Gyr. Given the short time before these galaxies were quenched, their past histories and quenching mechanism(s) are of particular interest. In this paper, we study star formation histories (SFHs) of 24 massive galaxies at 1.6 50% of their extant masses by ~1.5 Gyr before the time of observed redshifts, with a trend where more massive galaxies form earlier. Their stellar-phase metallicities are already compatible with those of local early-type galaxies, with a median value of logZ*/Zsun=0.25 and scatter of ~0.15dex. In combination with the reconstructed SFHs, we reveal their rapid metallicity evolution from z~5.5 to ~2.2 at a rate of ~0.2dex/Gyr in log Z*/Zsun. Interestingly, the inferred stellar-phase metallicities are, when compared at half-mass time, ~0.25dex higher than observed gas-phase metallicities of star forming galaxies. While systematic uncertainties remain, this may imply that these quenched galaxies have continued low-level star formation, rather than abruptly terminating their star formation activity, and kept enhancing their metallicity until recently.

The Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). XIII. G800L optical spectra from the parallel fields

We present a catalogue of 22755 objects with slitless, optical, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectroscopy from the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). The data cover $\sim$220 sq. arcmin to 7-orbit ($\sim$10 ks) depth in 20 parallel pointings of the Advanced Camera for Survey's G800L grism. The fields are located 6' away from 10 massive galaxy clusters in the HFF and CLASH footprints. Thirteen of the fields have ancillary HST imaging from these or other programs to facilitate a large number of applications, from studying metal distributions at $z\sim0.5$, to quasars at $z\sim4$, to the star formation histories of hundreds of galaxies in between. The spectroscopic catalogue has a median redshift of $\langle z\rangle=0.6$ with a median uncertainty of $Δz / (1+z)\lesssim2\%$ at $\rm F814W\lesssim23$ AB. Robust continuum detections reach a magnitude fainter. The 5 $σ$ limiting line flux is $f_{\rm lim}\approx5\times10^{-17}\rm~erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}$ and half of all sources have 50% of pixels contaminated at $\lesssim$1%. All sources have 1- and 2-D spectra, line fluxes/uncertainties and identifications, redshift probability distributions, spectral models, and derived narrow-band emission line maps from the Grism Redshift and Line Analysis tool (GRIZLI). We provide other basic sample characterisations, show data examples, and describe sources and potential investigations of interest. All data and products will be available online along with software to facilitate their use.

Experimental Hamiltonian Learning of An 11-qubit Solid-State Quantum Spin Register

Learning Hamiltonian of a quantum system is indispensable for prediction of the system dynamics and realization of high fidelity quantum gates. However, it is a significant challenge to efficiently characterize the Hamiltonian when its Hilbert space dimension grows exponentially with the system size. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an adaptive method to learn the effective Hamiltonian of an 11-qubit quantum system consisting of one electron spin and ten nuclear spins associated with a single Nitrogen-Vacancy center in a diamond. We validate the estimated Hamiltonian by designing universal quantum gates based on the learnt Hamiltonian parameters and demonstrate high-fidelity gates in experiment. Our experimental demonstration shows a well-characterized 11-qubit quantum spin register with the ability to test quantum algorithms and to act as a multi-qubit single node in a quantum network.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) - 2018 Summary Report

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. First beams would be available by 2035, marking the beginning of a broad CLIC physics programme spanning 25-30 years.

Observation of Chiral Surface Excitons in a Topological Insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$

The protected electron states at the boundaries or on the surfaces of topological insulators (TIs) have been the subject of intense theoretical and experimental investigations. Such states are enforced by very strong spin-orbit interaction in solids composed of heavy elements. Here, we study the composite particles -- chiral excitons -- formed by the Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes residing on the surface of an archetypical three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Photoluminescence (PL) emission arising due to recombination of excitons in conventional semiconductors is usually unpolarized because of scattering by phonons and other degrees of freedom during exciton thermalization. On the contrary, we observe almost perfectly polarization-preserving PL emission from chiral excitons. We demonstrate that the chiral excitons can be optically oriented with circularly polarized light in a broad range of excitation energies, even when the latter deviate from the (apparent) optical band gap by hundreds of meVs, and that the orientation remains preserved even at room temperature. Based on the dependences of the PL spectra on the energy and polarization of incident photons, we propose that chiral excitons are made from massive holes and massless (Dirac) electrons, both with chiral spin textures enforced by strong spin-orbit coupling. A theoretical model based on such proposal describes quantitatively the experimental observations. The optical orientation of composite particles, the chiral excitons, emerges as a general result of strong spin-orbit coupling in a 2D electron system. Our findings can potentially expand applications of TIs in photonics and optoelectronics.

Beta-decay spectroscopy of $^{27}$S

Background: Beta-decay spectroscopy provides valuable nuclear physics input for thermonuclear reaction rates of astrophysical interest and stringent test for shell-model theories far from the stability line. Purpose: The available decay properties of proton drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S is insufficient to constrain the properties of the key resonance in $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate and probe the possible isospin asymmetry. The decay scheme of $^{27}$S is complicated and far from being understood, which has motivated but also presented challenges for our experiment. Method: The $^{27}$S ions were implanted into a double-sided silicon strip detector array surrounded by the high-purity germanium detectors, where the $β$-delayed protons and $γ$ rays were measured simultaneously. Results: The improved spectroscopic properties including the precise half-life of $^{27}$S, the excitation energies, $β$-decay branching ratios, log~$ft$ values, and $B$(GT) values for the states of $^{27}$P populated in the $β$ decay of $^{27}$S were measured and compared to the $^{27}$Mg mirror states and the shell-model calculations. The present work has expanded greatly on the previously established decay scheme of $^{27}$S. Conclusions: The precise proton-separation energy of $^{27}$P, the energy and the ratio between $γ$ and proton partial widths of the $3/2^+$ resonance were obtained, thereby determining the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate based mainly on experimental constraints. The first evidence for the observation of a large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{27}$S and $^{27}$Na is also provided. The experimental spectroscopic information can be reproduced by the shell-model calculation taking the weakly bound effect of the proton $1s_{1/2}$ orbit into account.

Precise Charged Particle Timing with the PICOSEC Detector

The experimental requirements in near future accelerators (e.g. High Luminosity-LHC) has stimulated intense interest in development of detectors with high precision timing capabilities. With this as a goal, a new detection concept called PICOSEC, which is based to a "two-stage" MicroMegas detector coupled to a Cherenkov radiator equipped with a photocathode has been developed. Results obtained with this new detector yield a time resolution of 24\,ps for 150\,GeV muons and 76\,ps for single photoelectrons. In this paper we will report on the performance of the PICOSEC in test beams, as well as simulation studies and modelling of its timing characteristics.

Advanced method for reliable estimation of the spin-orbit torque efficiency in low coercive ferromagnetic multilayers

An experimental study of current-induced magnetization reversal of the Ru/Co/Ru and Ru/Co/Ru/W structures was carried out. In the considered structures, due to the small value of the coercive force comparable in magnitude to the Oersted field and the SOT effect field, magnetization reversal is carried out by moving a domain wall parallel to the direction of current injection. For such a case, a new method for estimating the effective field of SOT based on the analysis of the domain wall position taking into account the distribution of the Oersted field was proposed. This method allowed determining the effective longitudinal field and the efficiency of SOT equal 0.03 in the quasi-symmetric Ru/Co/Ru structure. It was found that adding the W capping layer enhances the SOT effect by 5 times.
