Photometric and Spectroscopic Properties of Type Ia Supernova 2018oh with Early Excess Emission from the $Kepler$ 2 Observations

Supernova (SN) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt) is the first spectroscopically-confirmed type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observed in the $Kepler$ field. The $Kepler$ data revealed an excess emission in its early light curve, allowing to place interesting constraints on its progenitor system (Dimitriadis et al. 2018, Shappee et al. 2018b). Here, we present extensive optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry, as well as dense sampling of optical spectra, for this object. SN 2018oh is relatively normal in its photometric evolution, with a rise time of 18.3$\pm$0.3 days and $Δ$m$_{15}(B)=0.96\pm$0.03 mag, but it seems to have bluer $B - V$ colors. We construct the "uvoir" bolometric light curve having peak luminosity as 1.49$\times$10$^{43}$erg s$^{-1}$, from which we derive a nickel mass as 0.55$\pm$0.04M$_{\odot}$ by fitting radiation diffusion models powered by centrally located $^{56}$Ni. Note that the moment when nickel-powered luminosity starts to emerge is +3.85 days after the first light in the Kepler data, suggesting other origins of the early-time emission, e.g., mixing of $^{56}$Ni to outer layers of the ejecta or interaction between the ejecta and nearby circumstellar material or a non-degenerate companion star. The spectral evolution of SN 2018oh is similar to that of a normal SN Ia, but is characterized by prominent and persistent carbon absorption features. The C II features can be detected from the early phases to about 3 weeks after the maximum light, representing the latest detection of carbon ever recorded in a SN Ia. This indicates that a considerable amount of unburned carbon exists in the ejecta of SN 2018oh and may mix into deeper layers.

K2 Observations of SN 2018oh Reveal a Two-Component Rising Light Curve for a Type Ia Supernova

We present an exquisite, 30-min cadence Kepler (K2) light curve of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt), starting weeks before explosion, covering the moment of explosion and the subsequent rise, and continuing past peak brightness. These data are supplemented by multi-color Pan-STARRS1 and CTIO 4-m DECam observations obtained within hours of explosion. The K2 light curve has an unusual two-component shape, where the flux rises with a steep linear gradient for the first few days, followed by a quadratic rise as seen for typical SNe Ia. This "flux excess" relative to canonical SN Ia behavior is confirmed in our $i$-band light curve, and furthermore, SN 2018oh is especially blue during the early epochs. The flux excess peaks 2.14$\pm0.04$ days after explosion, has a FWHM of 3.12$\pm0.04$ days, a blackbody temperature of $T=17,500^{+11,500}_{-9,000}$ K, a peak luminosity of $4.3\pm0.2\times10^{37}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$, and a total integrated energy of $1.27\pm0.01\times10^{43}\,{\rm erg}$. We compare SN 2018oh to several models that may provide additional heating at early times, including collision with a companion and a shallow concentration of radioactive nickel. While all of these models generally reproduce the early K2 light curve shape, we slightly favor a companion interaction, at a distance of $\sim$$2\times10^{12}\,{\rm cm}$ based on our early color measurements, although the exact distance depends on the uncertain viewing angle. Additional confirmation of a companion interaction in future modeling and observations of SN 2018oh would provide strong support for a single-degenerate progenitor system.

Deep learning framework DNN with conditional WGAN for protein solubility prediction

Protein solubility plays a critical role in improving production yield of recombinant proteins in biocatalyst and pharmaceutical field. To some extent, protein solubility can represent the function and activity of biocatalysts which are mainly composed of recombinant proteins. Highly soluble proteins are more effective in biocatalytic processes and can reduce the cost of biocatalysts. Screening proteins by experiments in vivo is time-consuming and expensive. In literature, large amounts of machine learning models have been investigated, whereas parameters of those models are underdetermined with insufficient data of protein solubility. A data augmentation algorithm that can enlarge the dataset of protein solubility and improve the performance of prediction model is highly desired, which can alleviate the common issue of insufficient data in biotechnology applications for developing machine learning models. We first implemented a novel approach that a data augmentation algorithm, conditional WGAN was used to improve prediction performance of DNN for protein solubility from protein sequence by generating artificial data. After adding mimic data produced from conditional WGAN, the prediction performance represented by $R^{2}$ was improved compared with the $R^{2}$ without data augmentation. After tuning the hyperparameters of two algorithms and organizing the dataset, we achieved a $R^{2}$ value of $45.04\%$, which enhanced $R^{2}$ about $10\%$ compared with the previous study using the same dataset. Data augmentation opens the door to applications of machine learning models on biological data, as machine learning models always fail to be well trained by small datasets.

Late-time observations of the extraordinary Type II supernova iPTF14hls

We study iPTF14hls, a luminous and extraordinary long-lived Type II supernova, which lately has attracted much attention and disparate interpretation. We present new optical photometry that extends the light curves until more than 3 yr past discovery. We also obtained optical spectroscopy over this period, and furthermore present additional space-based observations using Swift and HST. After an almost constant luminosity for hundreds of days, the later light curve of iPTF14hls finally fades and then displays a dramatic drop after about 1000 d, but the supernova is still visible at the latest epochs presented. The spectra have finally turned nebular, and the very last optical spectrum likely displays signatures from the deep and dense interior of the explosion. The high-resolution HST image highlights the complex environment of the explosion in this low-luminosity galaxy. We provide a large number of additional late-time observations of iPTF14hls, which are (and will continue to be) used to assess the many different interpretations for this intriguing object. In particular, the very late (+1000 d) steep decline of the optical light curve, the lack of very strong X-ray emission, and the emergence of intermediate-width emission lines including of [S II] that likely originate from dense, processed material in the core of the supernova ejecta, are all key observational tests for existing and future models.

An Empirical Template Library for FGK and Late--type A Stars Using LAMOST Observed Spectra

We present an empirical stellar spectra library created using spectra from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) DR5. This library represents a uniform data set ranging from 3750 through 8500K in effective temperature (T_eff), from -2.5 through +1.0 dex in metallicity ([Fe/H]), and from 0 to 5.0 dex in gravity (log g). The spectra in the library have resolution R~1800, with well-calibrated fluxes and rest-framed wavelengths. Using a large number of red stars observed by LAMOST, we generated denser K type templates to fill in data missing from current empirical spectral libraries, particularly the late K type. For K giants, we calibrated the spectroscopic surface gravities against the asteroseismic surface gravities. To verify the reliability of the parameters labeled for this library, we performed an internal cross-validation by using a chi^2 minimization method to interpolate parameters of each individual spectrum using the remaining spectra in the library. We obtained precisions of 41 K, 0.11 dex, and 0.05 dex for T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H], respectively, which means the templates are labeled with correct stellar parameters. Through external comparisons, we confirmed that measurements of the stellar parameters through this library can achieve accuracies of approximately 125K in T_eff, 0.1 dex in [Fe/H] and 0.20 dex in log g without systematic offset. This empirical library is useful for stellar parameter measurements because it has large parameter coverage and full wavelength coverage from 3800 to 8900A.

Unusual Effects of Be doping in the Iron Based Superconductor FeSe

Recent superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) over 100 K for monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 have renewed interest in the bulk parent compound. In KCl:AlCl3 flux-transport-grown crystals of FeSe0.94Be0.06, FeSe0.97Be0.03 and, for comparison, FeSe, this work reports doping of FeSe using Be, among the smallest of possible dopants, corresponding to an effective chemical pressure. According to lattice parameter measurements, 6% Be doping shrank the tetragonal FeSe lattice equivalent to a physical pressure of 0.75 GPa. Using this flux-transport method of sample preparation, 6% of Be was the maximum amount of dopant achievable. At this maximal composition of FeSe0.94Be0.06, the lattice unit cell shrinks by 2.4%, Tc - measured in the bulk via specific heat - increases by almost 10%, the Tc vs pressure behavior shifts its peak Tconset downwards by ~1 GPa, the high temperature structural transition around TS = 89 K increases by 1.9 K (in contrast to other dopants in FeSe which uniformly depress TS), and the low temperature specific heat gamma increases by 10 % compared to pure FeSe. Also, upon doping by 6% Be the residual resistivity ratio, rho(300K)/rho(T->0), increases by almost a factor of four, while rho(300K)/rho(T=Tc+) increases by 50%.

Magnon Valves Based on YIG/NiO/YIG All-Insulating Magnon Junctions

As an alternative angular momentum carrier, magnons or spin waves can be utilized to encode information and breed magnon-based circuits with ultralow power consumption and non-Boolean data processing capability. In order to construct such a circuit, it is indispensable to design some electronic components with both long magnon decay and coherence length and effective control over magnon transport. Here we show that an all-insulating magnon junctions composed by a magnetic insulator (MI1)/antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)/magnetic insulator (MI2) sandwich (Y3Fe5O12/NiO/Y3Fe5O12) can completely turn a thermogradient-induced magnon current on or off as the two Y3Fe5O12 layers are aligned parallel or anti-parallel. The magnon decay length in NiO is about 3.5~4.5 nm between 100 K and 200 K for thermally activated magnons. The insulating magnon valve (magnon junction), as a basic building block, possibly shed light on the naissance of efficient magnon-based circuits, including non-Boolean logic, memory, diode, transistors, magnon waveguide and switches with sizable on-off ratios.

Charged particle timing at sub-25 picosecond precision: the PICOSEC detection concept

The PICOSEC detection concept consists in a "two-stage" Micromegas detector coupled to a Cherenkov radiator and equipped with a photocathode. A proof of concept has already been tested: a single-photoelectron response of 76 ps has been measured with a femtosecond UV laser at CEA/IRAMIS, while a time resolution of 24 ps with a mean yield of 10.4 photoelectrons has been measured for 150 GeV muons at the CERN SPS H4 secondary line. This work will present the main results of this prototype and the performance of the different detector configurations tested in 2016-18 beam campaigns: readouts (bulk, resistive, multipad) and photocathodes (metallic+CsI, pure metallic, diamond). Finally, the prospects for building a demonstrator based on PICOSEC detection concept for future experiments will be discussed. In particular, the scaling strategies for a large area coverage with a multichannel readout plane, the R\&D on solid converters for building a robust photocathode and the different resistive configurations for a robust readout.

Develop machine learning based predictive models for engineering protein solubility

Protein activity is a significant characteristic for recombinant proteins which can be used as biocatalysts. High activity of proteins reduces the cost of biocatalysts. A model that can predict protein activity from amino acid sequence is highly desired, as it aids experimental improvement of proteins. However, only limited data for protein activity are currently available, which prevents the development of such models. Since protein activity and solubility are correlated for some proteins, the publicly available solubility dataset may be adopted to develop models that can predict protein solubility from sequence. The models could serve as a tool to indirectly predict protein activity from sequence. In literature, predicting protein solubility from sequence has been intensively explored, but the predicted solubility represented in binary values from all the developed models was not suitable for guiding experimental designs to improve protein solubility. Here we propose new machine learning models for improving protein solubility in vivo. We first implemented a novel approach that predicted protein solubility in continuous numerical values instead of binary ones. After combing it with various machine learning algorithms, we achieved a prediction accuracy of 76.28 percent when Support Vector Machine algorithm was used. Continuous values of solubility are more meaningful in protein engineering, as they enable researchers to choose proteins with higher predicted solubility for experimental validation, while binary values fail to distinguish proteins with the same value. There are only two possible values so many proteins have the same one.

Field-dependent heat transport in the Kondo insulator SmB6 : phonons scattered by magnetic impurities

The thermal conductivity $κ$ of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ was measured at low temperature, down to 70 mK, in magnetic fields up to 15 T, on single crystals grown using both the floating-zone and the flux methods. The residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $T \to 0$ is found to be zero in all samples, for all magnetic fields, in agreement with previous studies. There is therefore no clear evidence of fermionic heat carriers. In contrast to some prior data, we observe a large enhancement of $κ(T)$ with increasing field. The effect of field is anisotropic, depending on the relative orientation of field and heat current (parallel or perpendicular), and with respect to the cubic crystal structure. We interpret our data in terms of heat transport predominantly by phonons, which are scattered by magnetic impurities.

Real-Space Magnetic Imaging of the Multiferroic Spinels MnV2O4 and Mn3O4

Controlling multiferroic behavior in materials will enable the development of a wide variety of technological applications. However, the exact mechanisms driving multiferroic behavior are not well understood in most materials. Two such materials are the spinels MnV2O4 and Mn3O4, where mechanical strain is thought to play a role in determining magnetic behavior. Bulk studies of MnV2O4 have yielded conflicting and inconclusive results, due in part to the presence of mesoscale magnetic inhomogeneity, which complicates the interpretation of bulk measurements. To study the sub-micron-scale magnetic properties of Mn-based spinel materials, we performed magnetic force microscopy (MFM) on MnV2O4 samples subject to different levels of mechanical strain. We also used a crystal grain mapping technique to perform spatially registered MFM on Mn3O4. These local investigations revealed 100-nm-scale "stripe" modulations in the magnetic structure of both materials. In MnV2O4, the magnetization of these stripes is estimated to be Mz $\approx$ 105 A/m, which is on the order of the saturation magnetization reported previously. Cooling in a strong magnetic field eliminated the stripe patterning only in the low-strain sample of MnV2O4. The discovery of nanoscale magnetostructural inhomogeneity that is highly susceptible to magnetic field control in these materials necessitates both a revision of theoretical proposals and a reinterpretation of experimental data regarding the low-temperature phases and magnetic-field-tunable properties of these Mn-based spinels.

On the asymptotic behaviour of the Aragon Artacho-Campoy algorithm

Aragón Artacho and Campoy recently proposed a new method for computing the projection onto the intersection of two closed convex sets in Hilbert space; moreover, they proposed in 2018 a generalization from normal cone operators to maximally monotone operators. In this paper, we complete this analysis by demonstrating that the underlying curve converges to the nearest zero of the sum of the two operators. We also provide a new interpretation of the underlying operators in terms of the resolvent and the proximal average.

k-Space imaging of anisotropic 2D electron gas in GaN/GaAlN high-electron-mobility transistor heterostructures

Nanostructures based on buried interfaces and heterostructures are at the heart of modern semiconductor electronics as well as future devices utilizing spintronics, multiferroics, topological effects and other novel operational principles. Knowledge of electronic structure of these systems resolved in electron momentum k delivers unprecedented insights into their physics. Here, we explore 2D electron gas formed in GaN/AlGaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) heterostructures with an ultrathin barrier layer, key elements in current high-frequency and high-power electronics. Its electronic structure is accessed with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy whose probing depth is pushed to a few nm using soft-X-ray synchrotron radiation. The experiment yields direct k-space images of the electronic structure fundamentals of this system: the Fermi surface, band dispersions and occupancy, and the Fourier composition of wavefunctions encoded in the k-dependent photoemission intensity. We discover significant planar anisotropy of the electron Fermi surface and effective mass connected with relaxation of the interfacial atomic positions, which translates into non-linear (high-field) transport properties of the GaN/AlGaN heterostructures as an anisotropy of the saturation drift velocity of the 2D electrons.

Resource Allocation in NOMA based Fog Radio Access Networks

In the wake of growth in intelligent mobile devices and wide usage of bandwidth-hungry applications of mobile Internet, the demand of wireless data traffic and ubiquitous mobile broadband is rapidly increasing. On account of these developments, the research on fifth generation (5G) networks presents an accelerative tendency on a global scale. Edge computing draw lots of attention for reducing the time delay and improving the Quality of Service for the networks. While, fog radio access networks (F-RANs) is an emergent architecture, which takes full use of edge computing and distributed storing capabilities in edge devices. In this article, we propose an architecture of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based F-RANs, which has a strong capability of edge computing and can meet the heterogeneous requirements in 5G systems. NOMA with successive interference cancellation (SIC) is regarded as a critical multi-user access technology. In NOMA, more than one user can access the same time, code domain, and frequency resources. With assigning different power levels to multi-user and implementing SIC, multiple users detection can be achieved. In this article, we provide a description of the NOMA based F-RANs architecture, and discuss the resource allocation in that. We will focus on the power and subchannel allocation in consideration of using NOMA and the edge caching. Simulation results show that the proposed NOMA baesd F-RANs architecture and the resource management mechanisms can achieve the high net utility for the RANs.

PICOSEC: Charged particle timing at sub-25 picosecond precision with a Micromegas based detector

The prospect of pileup induced backgrounds at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) has stimulated intense interest in developing technologies for charged particle detection with accurate timing at high rates. The required accuracy follows directly from the nominal interaction distribution within a bunch crossing ($σ_z\sim5$ cm, $σ_t\sim170$ ps). A time resolution of the order of 20-30 ps would lead to significant reduction of these backgrounds. With this goal, we present a new detection concept called PICOSEC, which is based on a "two-stage" Micromegas detector coupled to a Cherenkov radiator and equipped with a photocathode. First results obtained with this new detector yield a time resolution of 24 ps for 150 GeV muons, and 76 ps for single photoelectrons.

Metal Deficiency in Two Massive Dead Galaxies at $z\sim2$

Local massive early-type galaxies are believed to have completed most of their star formation $\sim10$Gyr ago and evolved without having substantial star formation since. If so, their progenitors should have roughly solar stellar metallicities ($Z_*$), comparable to their values today. We report the discovery of two lensed massive ($\log M_*/M_\odot\sim11$), $z\sim2.2$ dead galaxies, that appear markedly metal deficient given this scenario. Using 17-band $HST$+$K_{s}$+$Spitzer$ photometry and deep $HST$ grism spectra from the GLASS and SN Refsdal follow-up campaigns covering features near $λ_{\rm rest}\sim4000$Å, we find these systems to be dominated by A-type stars with $\log Z_*/Z_\odot=-0.40\pm0.02$ and $-0.49\pm0.03$ ($30$-$40\%$ solar) under standard assumptions. The second system's lower metallicity is robust to isochrone changes, though this choice can drive the first system's from $\log Z_*/Z_\odot=-0.6$ to 0.1. If these two galaxies are representative of larger samples, this finding suggests that evolutionary paths other than dry minor-merging are required for these massive galaxies. Future analyses with direct metallicity measurements-e.g., by the $James\ Webb\ Space\ Telescope$-will provide critical insight into the nature of such phenomena.
