Stokes phenomena, Poisson-Lie groups and quantum groups

Let g be a complex semisimple Lie algebra, G the simply-connected Poisson-Lie group corresponding to g, and G* its dual. G-valued Stokes phenomena were used by Boalch [Bo1,Bo2] to give a canonical, analytic linearisation of the Poisson structure on G*. Ug-valued Stokes phenomena were used by the first author to construct a twist killing the KZ associator, and therefore give a transcendental construction of the Drinfeld-Jimbo quantum group U_hg (arXiv:1601.04076). In the present paper, we show that the former construction can be obtained as semiclassical limit of the latter. Along the way, we also show that the R-matrix of U_hg is a Stokes matrix for the dynamical KZ equations.

A First Glimpse at the Shell Structure beyond $^{54}$Ca: Spectroscopy of $^{55}$K, $^{55}$Ca, and $^{57}$Ca

States in the $N=35$ and 37 isotopes $^{55,57}$Ca have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from $^{56,58}$Sc and $^{56}$Ca beams at the RIBF. In addition, the $(p,2p)$ quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from $^{56}$Ca was studied. Excited states in $^{55}$K, $^{55}$Ca, and $^{57}$Ca were established for the first time via in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from $^{56}$Ca to states in $^{55}$K and $^{55}$Ca for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in $^{57}$Ca suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at $N=35$ to collective excitations at $N=37$.

A scale up study on chemical segregation and the effects on tensile properties in two medium Mn steel castings

Two ingots weighing 400 g and 5 kg with nominal compositions of Fe-8Mn-4Al-2Si-0.5C-0.07V-0.05Sn were produced to investigate the effect of processing variables on microstructure development. The larger casting has a cooling rate more representative of commercial production and provides an understanding of the potential challenges arising from casting-related segregation during efforts to scale up medium Mn steels, whilst the smaller casting has a high cooling rate and different segregation pattern. Sections from both ingots were homogenised at 1250 \degree C for various times to study the degree of chemical homogeneity and $δ$-ferrite dissolution. Within 2 h, the Mn segregation range (max $-$ min) decreased from 8.0 to 1.7 wt\% in the 400 g ingot and from 6.2 to 1.5 wt\% in the 5 kg ingot. Some $δ$-ferrite also remained untransformed after 2 h in both ingots but with the 5 kg ingot showing nearly three times more than the 400 g ingot. Micress modelling was carried out and good agreement was seen between predicted and measured segregation levels and distribution. After thermomechanical processing, it was found that the coarse untransformed $δ$-ferrite in the 5 kg ingot turned into coarse $δ$-ferrite stringers in the finished product, resulting in a slight decrease in yield strength. Nevertheless, rolled strips from both ingots showed $>$900 MPa yield strength, $>$1100 MPa tensile strength and $>$40\% elongation with $<$10\% difference in strength and no change in ductility when compared to a fully homogenised sample.

Investigation of the ground-state spin inversion in the neutron-rich 47,49Cl isotopes

A first gamma-ray study of 47,49Cl spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt de-excitation gamma-rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2+. Through the one-proton knockout reaction 50Ar(p,2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of 49Cl from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J = 3/2+ is deduced for the ground state of 49Cl, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope 51K.

Role of intermetallic phases in initiation and propagation of intergranular corrosion of an Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy

Intermetallic phases in a recently developed Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy have been investigated to understand their roles in the initiation and propagation processes of intergranular corrosion. Corrosion initiation involves trenching formation in the Al matrix adjacent to the large particles of Al7Cu2(Fe, Mn) phases. These phases containing Li are electrochemically active and susceptible to self-dissolution via a de-alloying mechanism during corrosion process. The subsurface particles of Al7Cu2(Fe, Mn) and Al20Cu2Mn3 phases act as the internal cathodes for continuous corrosion propagation along the particle-matrix interface and the associated grain boundaries. Corrosion propagation along the particle-matrix interface was facilitated by the anodic dissolution of the surrounding Al matrix due to the micro-galvanic interaction with the cathodic intermetallic phases. In addition, T1 (Al2CuLi) precipitates and the isolated particles of Al7Cu2(Fe, Mn) and Al20Cu2Mn3 phases were dissolved along the path of corrosion propagation. The dissolved metal ions were redeposited through the network of crevice.

Observation of inverse magnetocaloric effect in magnetic-field-induced austenite phase of Heusler Alloys Ni50-xCoxMn31.5Ga18.5 (x = 9 and 9.7)

Magnetocaloric effect (MCE), magnetization, specific heat, and magnetostriction measurements were performed in both pulsed and steady high magnetic fields to investigate the magnetocaloric properties of Heusler alloys Ni50-xCoxMn31.5Ga18.5 (x = 9 and 9.7). From direct MCE measurements for Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5 up to 56 T, a steep temperature drop was observed for magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation (MFIMT), designated as inverse MCE. Remarkably, this inverse MCE is apparent not only with MFIMT, but also in the magnetic-field-induced austenite phase. Specific heat measurements under steady high magnetic fields revealed that the magnetic field variation of the electronic entropy plays a dominant role in the unconventional magnetocaloric properties of these materials. First-principles based calculations performed for Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5 and Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 revealed that the magnetic-field-induced austenite phase of Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5 is more unstable than that of Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 and that it is sensitive to slight tetragonal distortion. We conclude that the inverse MCE in the magnetic-field-induced austenite phase is realized by marked change in the electronic entropy through tetragonal distortion induced by the externally applied magnetic field.

$\boldsymbol{N=32}$ shell closure below calcium: Low-lying structure of $^{50}$Ar

Low-lying excited states in the $N=32$ isotope $^{50}$Ar were investigated by in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multi-nucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3$^-$ state. The level scheme built using $γγ$ coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the $sd-pf$ model space, and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to $2^+$ states, while the previously proposed $4^+$ state could also correspond to a $2^+$ state.

Particle identification and revolution time corrections for the isochronous mass spectrometry in storage rings

In the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) performed at storage rings, masses of short-lived nuclides are determined through precision measurements of their mean revolution times. However, the distribution of revolution times could be seriously deteriorated by instabilities of the ring's magnetic fields. This becomes a significant obstacle for the particle identifications and mass determinations. A data analysis method is described in this paper which is able to largely remove the uncertainties caused by the magnetic field instabilities in the particle identifications and the mean revolution times. We show that this method is very effective for the IMS experiments even when the magnetic fields of a storage ring vary slowly up to a level of $ΔB/B\sim 10^{-4}$.

Mass measurements for $T_{z}=-2$ $fp$-shell nuclei $^{40}$Ti, $^{44}$Cr, $^{46}$Mn, $^{48}$Fe, $^{50}$Co and $^{52}$Ni

By using isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) at the experimental cooler storage ring CSRe, masses of short-lived $^{44}$Cr, $^{46}$Mn, $^{48}$Fe, $^{50}$Co and $^{52}$Ni were measured for the first time and the precision of the mass of $^{40}$Ti was improved by a factor of about 2. Relative precisions of $δm/m=(1-2)\times$10$^{-6}$ have been achieved. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described. The obtained masses are compared with the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2016 (AME$^{\prime}$16) and with theoretical model predictions. The new mass data enable us to extract the higher order coefficients, $d$ and $e$, of the quartic form of the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) for the $fp$-shell isospin quintets. Unexpectedly large $d$- and $e$-values for $A=44$ quintet are found. By re-visiting the previous experimental data on $β$-delayed protons from $^{44}$Cr decay, it is suggested that the observed anomaly could be due to the misidentification of the $T=2$, $J^π=0^{+}$ isobaric analog state (IAS) in $^{44}$V.

Bimeron Clusters in Chiral Antiferromagnets

A mgnetic bimeron is an in-plane topological counterpart of a magnetic skyrmion. Despite the topological equivalence, their statics and dynamics could be distinct, making them attractive from the perspectives of both physics and spintronic applications. In this work, we investigate an antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin film with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and introduce the AFM bimeron cluster as a new form of topological quasi-particle. Bimerons demonstrate high current-driven mobility as generic AFM solitons, while featuring anisotropic and relativistic dynamics excited by currents with in-plane and out-of-plane polarizations, respectively. Moreover, these spin textures can absorb other bimeron solitons or clusters along the translational direction to acquire a wide range of Néel topological numbers. The clustering involves the rearrangement of topological structures, and gives rise to remarkable changes in static and dynamical properties. The merits of AFM bimeron clusters reveal a potential path to unify multi-bit data creation, transmission, storage and even topology-based computation within the same material system, and may stimulate innovative spintronic devices enabling new paradigms of data manipulations.

Observation of cyclotron resonance and measurement of the hole mass in optimally-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$

Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy in pulsed magnetic fields up to 31 T, we measure the terahertz optical conductivity in an optimally-doped thin film of the high temperature superconducting cuprate La$_{1.84}$Sr$_{0.16}$CuO$_4$. We observe systematic changes in the circularly-polarized complex optical conductivity that are consistent with cyclotron absorption of p-type charge carriers characterized by a cyclotron mass of $4.9\pm 0.8$ $m_{\rm e}$, and a scattering rate that increases with magnetic field. These results open the door to studies aimed at characterizing the degree to which electron-electron interactions influence carrier masses in cuprate superconductors.

Abrupt Enhancement of Spin-Orbit Scattering Time in Ultrathin Semimetallic SrIrO$_3$ Close to the Metal-Insulator Transition

We report a magnetotransport study of spin relaxation in 1.4-21.2 nm epitaxial SrIrO$_3$ thin films coherently strained on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. Fully charge compensated semimetallic transport has been observed in SrIrO$_3$ films thicker than 1.6 nm, where the charge mobility at 10 K increases from 45 cm$^2$/Vs to 150 cm$^2$/Vs with decreasing film thickness. In the two-dimensional regime, the charge dephasing and spin-orbit scattering lengths extracted from the weak localization/anti-localization effects show power-law dependence on temperature, pointing to the important role of electron-electron interaction. The spin-orbit scattering time $τ_\text{so}$ exhibits an Elliott-Yafet mechanism dominated quasi-linear dependence on the momentum relaxation time $τ_\text{p}$. Ultrathin films approaching the critical thickness of metal-insulator transition show an abrupt enhancement in $τ_\text{so}$, with the corresponding $τ_\text{so}/τ_\text{p}$ about 7.6 times of the value for thicker films. A likely origin for such unusual enhancement is the onset of strong electron correlation, which leads to charge gap formation and suppresses spin scattering.

Spectroscopic Signature for Local-moment Magnetism in van der Waals Ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$

The van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ has recently attracted extensive research attention due to its intertwined magnetic, electronic and topological properties. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of bulk Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. We observe largely dispersive energy bands that are narrowed by a factor of 1.6 compared with ab-initio calculation. Upon heating towards the ferromagnetic transition near 225 K, we observe a massive reduction of quasiparticle coherence in a large energy range, which is attributed to the enhanced magnetic fluctuation in the system. Remarkably, the electron bands barely shift with increasing temperature, which deviates from the exchange splitting picture within the itinerant Stoner model. We argue that the local magnetic moments play a crucial role in the ferromagnetism of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, despite its strongly itinerant nature. Our results provide important insights into the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ and shed light on the generic understanding of itinerant magnetism in correlated materials.

Shell evolution of $N=40$ isotones towards $^{60}$Ca: First spectroscopy of $^{62}$Ti

Excited states in the $N=40$ isotone $^{62}$Ti were populated via the $^{63}$V$(p,2p)$$^{62}$Ti reaction at $\sim$200~MeV/u at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using $γ$-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the $2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^{+}_{\mathrm{gs}}$ and $4^+_1 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed $^{62}$Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring $^{64}$Cr and $^{66}$Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for $^{62}$Ti show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the $N=40$ gap. Likewise, they indicate that the $N=40$ island of inversion extends down to $Z=20$, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive $^{60}$Ca.

Fault-tolerant protection of near-term trapped-ion topological qubits under realistic noise sources

The quest of demonstrating beneficial quantum error correction in near-term noisy quantum processors can benefit enormously from a low-resource optimization of fault-tolerant schemes, which are specially designed for a particular platform considering both state-of-the-art technological capabilities and main sources of noise. In this work, we show that flag-qubit-based fault-tolerant techniques for active error detection and correction, as well as for encoding of logical qubits, can be leveraged in current designs of trapped-ion quantum processors to achieve this break-even point of beneficial quantum error correction. Our improved description of the relevant sources of noise, together with detailed schedules for the implementation of these flag-based protocols, provide one of the most complete microscopic characterizations of a fault-tolerant quantum processor to date. By extensive numerical simulations, we provide a comparative study of flag- and cat-based approaches to quantum error correction, and show that the superior performance of the former can become a landmark in the success of near-term quantum computing with noisy trapped-ion devices.

Multi-wavelength campaign on NGC 7469 V. Analysis of the HST/COS observations: Super solar metallicity, distance, and trough variation models

Aims. Our aim is to determine the distance of the UV outflow components from the central source, their abundances and total column density, and the mechanism responsible for their observed absorption variability. Methods. We studied the UV spectra acquired during the campaign as well as from three previous epochs (2002-2010). Our main analysis tools are ionic column-density extraction techniques and photoionization models (both equilibrium and time-dependent models) based on the code Cloudy. Results. For component 1 (at -600 km/s) our findings include the following: metallicity that is roughly twice solar; a simple model based on a fixed total column-density absorber, reacting to changes in ionizing illumination that matches the different ionic column densities derived from four spectroscopic epochs spanning 13 years; and a distance of R=6+2.5-1.5 pc from the central source. Component 2 (at -1430 km/s) has shallow troughs and is at a much larger R. For component 3 (at -1880 km/s) our findings include: a similar metallicity to component 1; a photoionization-based model can explain the major features of its complicated absorption trough variability and an upper limit of 60 or 150 pc on R. This upper limit is consistent and complementary to the X-ray derived lower limit of 12 or 31 pc for R. The total column density of the UV phase is roughly 1% and 0.1% of the lower and upper ionization components of the warm absorber, respectively. Conclusions. The NGC 7469 outflow shows super-solar metallicity similar to the outflow in Mrk 279, carbon and nitrogen are twice and four times more abundant than their solar values, respectively. Similar to the NGC 5548 case, a simple model can explain the physical characteristics and the variability observed in the outflow.

Spin-wave directional anisotropies in antiferromagnetic Ba$_{3}$NbFe$_{3}$Si$_{2}$O$_{14}$

Ba$_{3}$NbFe$_{3}$Si$_{2}$O$_{14}$ (langasite) is structurally and magnetically single domain chiral with the magnetic helicity induced through competing symmetric exchange interactions. Using neutron scattering, we show that the spin-waves in antiferromagnetic langasite display directional anisotropy. On applying a time reversal symmetry breaking magnetic field along the $c$-axis, the spin wave energies differ when the sign is reversed for either the momentum transfer $\pm$ $\vec{Q}$ or applied magnetic field $\pm$ $μ_{0}$H. When the field is applied within the crystallographic $ab$-plane, the spin wave dispersion is directionally \textit{isotropic} and symmetric in $\pm$ $μ_{0}$H. However, a directional anisotropy is observed in the spin wave intensity. We discuss this directional anisotropy in the dispersion in langasite in terms of a field induced precession of the dynamic unit cell staggered magnetization. Directional anisotropy, or often referred to as non reciprocal responses, can occur in antiferromagnetic phases in the absence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or other effects resulting from spin-orbit coupling.

Masses of ground and isomeric states of $^{101}$In and configuration-dependent shell evolution in odd-$A$ indium isotopes

We report first precision mass measurements of the $1/2^-$ isomeric and $9/2^+$ ground states of $^{101}$In. The determined isomeric excitation energy continues a smooth trend of odd-$A$ indium isotopes up to the immediate vicinity of $N=50$ magic number. This trend can be confirmed by dedicated shell model calculations only if the neutron configuration mixing is considered. We find that the single particle energies are different for different states of the same isotope. The presented configuration-dependent shell evolution, type II shell evolution, in odd-$A$ nuclei is discussed for the first time. Our results will facilitate future studies of single-particle neutron states.
