Continuity up to the boundary for minimizers of the one-phase Bernoulli problem

We prove new boundary regularity results for minimizers to the one-phase Alt-Caffarelli functional (also known as Bernoulli free boundary problem) in the case of continuous and Hölder-continuous boundary data. As an application, we use them to extend recent generic uniqueness and regularity results to families of continuous functions.

Graphical solutions to one-phase free boundary problems

We study viscosity solutions to the classical one-phase problem and its thin counterpart. In low dimensions, we show that when the free boundary is the graph of a continuous function, the solution is the half-plane solution. This answers, in the salient dimensions, a one-phase free boundary analogue of Bernstein's problem for minimal surfaces. As an application, we also classify monotone solutions of semilinear equations with a bump-type nonlinearity.

Generic regularity of free boundaries for the thin obstacle problem

The free boundary for the Signorini problem in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ is smooth outside of a degenerate set, which can have the same dimension ($n-1$) as the free boundary itself. In [FR21] it was shown that generically, the set where the free boundary is not smooth is at most $(n-2)$-dimensional. Our main result establishes that, in fact, the degenerate set has zero $\mathcal{H}^{n-3-α_0}$ measure for a generic solution. As a by-product, we obtain that, for $n+1 \leq 4$, the whole free boundary is generically smooth. This solves the analogue of a conjecture of Schaeffer in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $\mathbb{R}^4$ for the thin obstacle problem.

Generic properties in free boundary problems

In this work, we show the generic uniqueness of minimizers for a large class of energies, including the Alt-Caffarelli and Alt-Phillips functionals. We then prove the generic regularity of free boundaries for minimizers of the one-phase Alt-Caffarelli and Alt-Phillips functionals, for a monotone family of boundary data $\{φ_t\}_{t\in(-1,1)}$. More precisely, we show that for a co-countable subset of $\{φ_t\}_{t\in(-1,1)}$, minimizers have smooth free boundaries in $\mathbb{R}^5$ for the Alt-Caffarelli and in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for the Alt-Phillips functional. In general dimensions, we show that the singular set is one dimension smaller than expected for almost every boundary datum in $\{φ_t\}_{t\in(-1,1)}$.

Schauder and Cordes-Nirenberg estimates for nonlocal elliptic equations with singular kernels

We study integro-differential elliptic equations (of order $2s$) with variable coefficients, and prove the natural and most general Schauder-type estimates that can hold in this setting, both in divergence and non-divergence form. Furthermore, we also establish Hölder estimates for general elliptic equations with no regularity assumption on $x$, including for the first time operators like $\sum_{i=1}^n(-\partial^2_{\textbf{v}_i(x)})^s$, provided that the coefficients have ``small oscillation''.

Optimal regularity for the fully nonlinear thin obstacle problem

In this work we establish the optimal regularity for solutions to the fully nonlinear thin obstacle problem. In particular, we show the existence of an optimal exponent $α_F$ such that $u$ is $C^{1,α_F}$ on either side of the obstacle. In order to do that, we prove the uniqueness of blow-ups at regular points, as well as an expansion for the solution there. Finally, we also prove that if the operator is rotationally invariant, then $α_F\ge \frac12$ and the solution is always $C^{1,1/2}$.

Regularity Theory for Elliptic PDE

This manuscript aims to provide a self-contained introduction to the regularity theory for elliptic PDE, focusing on the main ideas rather than proving all results in their greatest generality. It can be seen as a bridge between an elementary PDE course and more advanced textbooks. This is a draft of the book "Regularity Theory for Elliptic PDE". The final version has been published in Zurich Lectures in Advanced Mathematics, EMS Press, 2022.

Infinite-width limit of deep linear neural networks

This paper studies the infinite-width limit of deep linear neural networks initialized with random parameters. We obtain that, when the number of neurons diverges, the training dynamics converge (in a precise sense) to the dynamics obtained from a gradient descent on an infinitely wide deterministic linear neural network. Moreover, even if the weights remain random, we get their precise law along the training dynamics, and prove a quantitative convergence result of the linear predictor in terms of the number of neurons. We finally study the continuous-time limit obtained for infinitely wide linear neural networks and show that the linear predictors of the neural network converge at an exponential rate to the minimal $\ell_2$-norm minimizer of the risk.

Stable cones in the thin one-phase problem

The aim of this work is to study homogeneous stable solutions to the thin (or fractional) one-phase free boundary problem. The problem of classifying stable (or minimal) homogeneous solutions in dimensions $n\geq3$ is completely open. In this context, axially symmetric solutions are expected to play the same role as Simons' cone in the classical theory of minimal surfaces, but even in this simpler case the problem is open. The goal of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, our first main contribution is to find, for the first time, the stability condition for the thin one-phase problem. Quite surprisingly, this requires the use of "large solutions" for the fractional Laplacian, which blow up on the free boundary. On the other hand, using our new stability condition, we show that any axially symmetric homogeneous stable solution in dimensions $n\le 5$ is one-dimensional, independently of the parameter $s\in (0,1)$.

Improved regularity of second derivatives for subharmonic functions

In this note, we prove that if a subharmonic function $Δu\ge 0$ has pure second derivatives $\partial_{ii} u$ that are signed measures, then their negative part $(\partial_{ii} u)_-$ belongs to $L^1$ (in particular, it is not singular). We then show that this improvement of regularity cannot be upgraded to $L^p$ for any $p > 1$. We finally relate this problem to a natural question on the one-sided regularity of solutions to the obstacle problem with rough obstacles.

Free boundary regularity for almost every solution to the Signorini problem

We investigate the regularity of the free boundary for the Signorini problem in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. It is known that regular points are $(n-1)$-dimensional and $C^\infty$. However, even for $C^\infty$ obstacles $φ$, the set of non-regular (or degenerate) points could be very large, e.g. with infinite $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$ measure. The only two assumptions under which a nice structure result for degenerate points has been established are: when $φ$ is analytic, and when $Δφ< 0$. However, even in these cases, the set of degenerate points is in general $(n-1)$-dimensional (as large as the set of regular points). In this work, we show for the first time that, "usually", the set of degenerate points is small. Namely, we prove that, given any $C^\infty$ obstacle, for "almost every" solution the non-regular part of the free boundary is at most $(n-2)$-dimensional. This is the first result in this direction for the Signorini problem. Furthermore, we prove analogous results for the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$, and for the parabolic Signorini problem. In the parabolic Signorini problem, our main result establishes that the non-regular part of the free boundary is $(n-1-α_\circ)$-dimensional for almost all times $t$, for some $α_\circ > 0$. Finally, we construct some new examples of free boundaries with degenerate points.

The Thin Obstacle Problem: A Survey

In this work we present a general introduction to the Signorini problem (or thin obstacle problem). It is a self-contained survey that aims to cover the main currently known results regarding the thin obstacle problem. We present the theory with some proofs: from the optimal regularity of solutions and classification of free boundary points, to more recent results on the non-regular part of the free boundary and generic regularity.

On the singular set in the thin obstacle problem: higher order blow-ups and the very thin obstacle problem

In this work, we consider the singular set in the thin obstacle problem with weight $|x_{n+1}|^a$ for $a\in (-1, 1)$, which arises as the local extension of the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian (a non-local problem). We develop a refined expansion of the solution around its singular points by building on the ideas introduced by Figalli and Serra to study the fine properties of the singular set in the classical obstacle problem. As a result, under a superharmonicity condition on the obstacle, we prove that each stratum of the singular set is locally contained in a single $C^2$ manifold, up to a lower dimensional subset, and the top stratum is locally contained in a $C^{1,α}$ manifold for some $α> 0$ if $a < 0$. In studying the top stratum, we discover a dichotomy, until now unseen, in this problem (or, equivalently, the fractional obstacle problem). We find that second blow-ups at singular points in the top stratum are global, homogeneous solutions to a codimension two lower dimensional obstacle problem (or fractional thin obstacle problem) when $a < 0$, whereas second blow-ups at singular points in the top stratum are global, homogeneous, and $a$-harmonic polynomials when $a \geq 0$. To do so, we establish regularity results for this codimension two problem, what we call the very thin obstacle problem. Our methods extend to the majority of the singular set even when no sign assumption on the Laplacian of the obstacle is made. In this general case, we are able to prove that the singular set can be covered by countably many $C^2$ manifolds, up to a lower dimensional subset.

On the obstacle problem for the 1D wave equation

Our goal is to review the known theory on the one-dimensional obstacle problem for the wave equation, and to discuss some extensions. We introduce the setting established by Schatzman within which existence and uniqueness of solutions can be proved, and we prove that (in some suitable systems of coordinates) the Lipschitz norm is preserved after collision. As a consequence, we deduce that solutions to the obstacle problem (both simple and double) for the wave equation have bounded Lipschitz norm at all times. Finally, we discuss the validity of an explicit formula for the solution that was found by Bamberger and Schatzman.

Regularity of minimal surfaces with lower dimensional obstacles

We study the Plateau problem with a lower dimensional obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Intuitively, in $\mathbb{R}^3$ this corresponds to a soap film (spanning a given contour) that is pushed from below by a "vertical" 2D half-space (or some smooth deformation of it). We establish almost optimal $C^{1,1/2-}$ estimates for the solutions near points on the free boundary of the contact set, in any dimension $n\ge 2$. The $C^{1,1/2-}$ estimates follow from an $\varepsilon$-regularity result for minimal surfaces with thin obstacles in the spirit of the De Giorgi's improvement of flatness. To prove it, we follow Savin's small perturbations method. A nontrivial difficulty in using Savin's approach for minimal surfaces with thin obstacles is that near a typical contact point the solution consists of two smooth surfaces that intersect transversally, and hence it is not very flat at small scales. Via a new "dichotomy approach" based on barrier arguments we are able to overcome this difficulty and prove the desired result.

On global solutions to semilinear elliptic equations related to the one-phase free boundary problem

Motivated by its relation to models of flame propagation, we study globally Lipschitz solutions of $Δu=f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $f$ is smooth, non-negative, with support in the interval $[0,1]$. In such setting, any "blow-down" of the solution $u$ will converge to a global solution to the classical one-phase free boundary problem of Alt-Caffarelli. In analogy to a famous theorem of Savin for the Allen-Cahn equation, we study here the 1D symmetry of solutions $u$ that are energy minimizers. Our main result establishes that, in dimensions $n<6$, if $u$ is axially symmetric and stable then it is 1D.

The Lagrangian structure of the Vlasov-Poisson system in domains with specular reflection

In this work, we deal with the Vlasov-Poisson system in smooth physical domains with specular boundary condition, under mild integrability assumptions, and $d \ge 3$. We show that the Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions of the system are also equivalent in this context by extending the recent developments by Ambrosio, Colombo, and Figalli to our setting. In particular, assuming that the total energy is bounded, we prove the existence of renormalized solutions, and we also show that they are transported by a weak notion of flow that allows velocity jumps at the boundary. Finally, we show that flows can be globally defined for $d = 3, 4$.
