Evaluation of Bianchi Rigid Meromorphic Cocycles at Big ATR Points

We develop the tools required to effectively evaluate the Bianchi rigid meromorphic cocycles introduced by Darmon-Gehrmann-Lipnowski at big ATR points, and use them to obtain the first numerical verification of the conjectured algebraicity of these special values. Moreover, our computations suggest that these special values exhibit behaviour analogous to that of the special values of Borcherds products on Hilbert modular surfaces at big CM points.

Periods of modular forms and applications to the conjectures of Oda and of Prasanna-Venkatesh

We establish several formulas relating periods of modular forms on quaternion algebras over number fields to special values of L-functions. Our main inputs are the cohomological techniques for working with periods introduced in [Mol21], along with explicit versions of the Waldspurger formula due to Cai-Shu-Tian. We work in general even positive weights; when specialized to parallel weight 2, our formulas provide partial evidence for the conjectures of Oda and of Prasanna-Venkatesh in the case of forms associated to elliptic curves.

Abelian varieties genuinely of $\mathrm{GL}_n$-type

A simple abelian variety $A$ defined over a number field $k$ is called of $\mathrm{GL}_n$-type if there exists a number field of degree $2\dim(A)/n$ which is a subalgebra of $\mathrm{End}^0(A)$. We say that $A$ is genuinely of $\mathrm{GL}_n$-type if its base change $A_{\overline{k}}$ contains no isogeny factor of $\mathrm{GL}_m$-type for $m<n$. This generalizes the classical notion of abelian variety of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type without potential complex multiplication introduced by Ribet. We develop a theory of building blocks, inner twists and nebentypes for these varieties. When the center of $\mathrm{End}^0(A)$ is totally real, Chi, Banaszak, Gajda, and Kraso\'n have attached to $A$ a compatible system of Galois representations of degree $n$ which is either symplectic or orthogonal. We extend their results under the weaker assumption that the center of $\mathrm{End}^0(A_{\overline{k}})$ be totally real. We conclude the article by showing an explicit family of abelian fourfolds genuinely of $\mathrm{GL}_4$-type. This involves the construction of a family of genus 2 curves defined over a quadratic field whose Jacobian has trivial endomorphism ring and is isogenous to its Galois conjugate.

Endomorphism algebras of geometrically split abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$

We determine the set of geometric endomorphism algebras of geometrically split abelian surfaces defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. In particular we find that this set has cardinality 92. The essential part of the classification consists in determining the set of quadratic imaginary fields $M$ with class group $\mathrm{C}_2 \times \mathrm{C}_2$ for which there exists an abelian surface $A$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which is geometrically isogenous to the square of an elliptic curve with CM by $M$. We first study the interplay between the field of definition of the geometric endomorphisms of $A$ and the field $M$. This reduces the problem to the situation in which $E$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-curve in the sense of Gross. We can then conclude our analysis by employing Nakamura's method to compute the endomorphism algebra of the restriction of scalars of a Gross $\mathbb{Q}$-curve.

Endomorphism algebras of geometrically split genus 2 Jacobians over Q

The main result of [FG20] classifies the 92 geometric endomorphism algebras of geometrically split abelian surfaces defined over Q. We show that 54 of them arise as geometric endomorphism algebras of Jacobians of genus 2 curves defined over Q, and that the remaining 38 do not. In particular, we exhibit 38 examples of Qbar-isogeny classes of abelian surfaces defined over Q that do not contain any Jacobian of a genus 2 curve defined over Q, and for each of the 54 algebras that do arise we exhibit a curve realizing them.

Tate module tensor decompositions and the Sato-Tate conjecture for certain abelian varieties potentially of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type

We introduce a tensor decomposition of the $\ell$-adic Tate module of an abelian variety $A_0$ defined over a number field which is geometrically isotypic. If $A_0$ is potentially of $\GL_2$-type and defined over a totally real number field, we use this decomposition to describe its Sato--Tate group and to prove the Sato--Tate conjecture in certain cases.

Plectic p-adic invariants

For modular elliptic curves over number fields of narrow class number one, and with multiplicative reduction at a collection of p-adic primes, we define new p-adic invariants. Inspired by Nekovar and Scholl's plectic conjectures, we believe these invariants control the Mordell--Weil group of higher rank elliptic curves and we support our expectations with numerical experiments.

A quaternionic construction of $p$-adic singular moduli

Rigid meromorphic cocycles were introduced by Darmon and Vonk as a conjectural $p$-adic extension of the theory of singular moduli to real quadratic base fields. They are certain cohomology classes of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ which can be evaluated at real quadratic irrationalities and the values thus obtained are conjectured to lie in algebraic extensions of the base field. In this article we present a similar construction of cohomology casses in which $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ is replaced by an order in an indefinite quaternion algebra over a totally real number field $F$. These quaternionic cohomology classes can be evaluated at elements in almost totally complex extensions $K$ of $F$, and we conjecture that the corresponding values lie in algebraic extensions of $K$. We also report on extensive numerical evidence for this algebraicity conjecture.

Fields of definition of elliptic $k$-curves and the realizability of all genus 2 Sato--Tate groups over a number field

Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be an abelian variety of dimension $g\geq 1$ that is isogenous over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ to $E^g$, where $E$ is an elliptic curve. If $E$ does not have complex multiplication (CM), by results of Ribet and Elkies concerning fields of definition of elliptic $\mathbb{Q}$-curves $E$ is isogenous to a curve defined over a polyquadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We show that one can adapt Ribet's methods to study the field of definition of $E$ up to isogeny also in the CM case. We find two applications of this analysis to the theory of Sato--Tate groups: First, we show that $18$ of the $34$ possible Sato--Tate groups of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ occur among at most $51$ $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isogeny classes of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$; Second, we give a positive answer to a question of Serre concerning the existence of a number field over which abelian surfaces can be found realizing each of the $52$ possible Sato--Tate groups of abelian surfaces.

Special values of triple-product $p$-adic $L$-functions and non-crystalline diagonal classes

The main purpose of this note is to understand the arithmetic encoded in the special value of the $p$-adic $L$-function $\mathcal{L}_p^g(\mathbf{f},\mathbf{g},\mathbf{h})$ associated to a triple of modular forms $(f,g,h)$ of weights $(2,1,1)$, in the case where the classical $L$-function $L(f\otimes g\otimes h,s)$ - which typically has sign $+1$ - does not vanish at its central critical point $s=1$. When $f$ corresponds to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ and the classical $L$-function vanishes, the Elliptic Stark Conjecture of Darmon-Lauder-Rotger predicts that $\mathcal{L}_p^g(\mathbf{f},\mathbf{g},\mathbf{h})(2,1,1)$ is either $0$ (when the order of vanishing of the complex $L$-function is $>2$) or related to logarithms of global points on $E$ and a certain Gross--Stark unit associated to $g$. We complete the picture proposed by the Elliptic Stark Conjecture by providing a formula for the value $\mathcal{L}_p^g(\mathbf{f},\mathbf{g},\mathbf{h})(2,1,1)$ in the case where $L(f\otimes g\otimes h,1)\neq 0$.

An automorphic approach to Darmon points

We give archimedean and non-archimedean constructions of Darmon points on modular abelian varieties attached to automorphic forms over arbitrary number fields and possibly non-trivial central character. An effort is made to present a unifying point of view, emphasizing the automorphic nature of the construction.

On the elliptic Stark conjecture in higher weight

We study the special values of the triple product $p$-adic $L$-function constructed by Darmon and Rotger at all classical points outside the region of interpolation. We propose conjectural formulas for these values that can be seen as extending the Elliptic Stark Conjecture, and we provide theoretical evidence for them by proving some particular cases.

On the rank and the convergence rate towards the Sato-Tate measure

Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field and let $G$ denote its Sato-Tate group. Under the assumption of certain standard conjectures on $L$-functions attached to the irreducible representations of $G$, we study the convergence rate of any virtual selfdual character of $G$. We find that this convergence rate is dictated by several arithmetic invariants of $A$, such as its rank or its Sato-Tate group $G$. The results are consonant with some previous experimental observations, and we also provide additional numerical evidence consistent with them. The techniques that we use were introduced by Sarnak, in order to explain the bias in the sign of the Frobenius traces of an elliptic curve without complex multiplication defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We show that the same methods can be adapted to study the convergence rate of the characters of its Sato-Tate group, and that they can also be employed in the more general case of abelian varieties over number fields. A key tool in our analysis is the existence of limiting distributions for automorphic $L$-functions, which is due to Akbary, Ng, and Shahabi.

Periods of modular GL2-type abelian varieties and p-adic integration

Let F be a number field and N an integral ideal in its ring of integers. Let f be a modular newform over F of level Gamma0(N) with rational Fourier coefficients. Under certain additional conditions, Guitart-Masdeu-Sengun constructed a p-adic lattice which is conjectured to be the Tate lattice of an elliptic curve E whose L-function equals that of f. The aim of this note is to generalize this construction when the Hecke eigenvalues of f generate a number field of degree d >= 1, in which case the geometric object associated to f is expected to be, in general, an abelian variety A of dimension d. We also provide numerical evidence supporting the conjectural construction in the case of abelian surfaces.

Uniformization of modular elliptic curves via p-adic periods

The Langlands Programme predicts that a weight 2 newform f over a number field K with integer Hecke eigenvalues generally should have an associated elliptic curve E_f over K. In our previous paper, we associated, building on works of Darmon and Greenberg, a p-adic lattice to f, under certain hypothesis, and implicitly conjectured that this lattice is commensurable with the p-adic Tate lattice of E_f . In this paper, we present this conjecture in detail and discuss how it can be used to compute, directly from f, an explicit Weierstrass equation for the conjectural E_f . We develop algorithms to this end and implement them in order to carry out extensive systematic computations in which we compute Weierstrass equations of hundreds of elliptic curves, some with huge heights, over dozens of number fields. The data we obtain provide overwhelming amount of support for the conjecture and furthermore demonstrate that the conjecture provides an efficient tool to building databases of elliptic curves over number fields.

A $p$-adic construction of ATR points on $\mathbb{Q}$-curves

In this note we consider certain elliptic curves defined over real quadratic fields isogenous to their Galois conjugate. We give a construction of algebraic points on these curves defined over almost totally real number fields. The main ingredient is the system of Heegner points arising from Shimura curve uniformizations. In addition, we provide an explicit $p$-adic analytic formula which allows for the effective, algorithmic calculation of such points.

Overconvergent cohomology and quaternionic Darmon points

We develop the (co)homological tools that make effective the construction of the quaternionic Darmon points introduced by Matthew Greenberg. In addition, we use the overconvergent cohomology techniques of Pollack--Pollack to allow for the efficient calculation of such points. Finally, we provide the first numerical evidence supporting the conjectures on their rationality.
