Computation of ATR Darmon points on non-geometrically modular elliptic curves

ATR points were introduced by Darmon as a conjectural construction of algebraic points on certain elliptic curves for which in general the Heegner point method is not available. So far the only numerical evidence, provided by Darmon--Logan and Gärtner, concerned curves arising as quotients of Shimura curves. In those special cases the ATR points can be obtained from the already existing Heegner points, thanks to results of Zhang and Darmon--Rotger--Zhao. In this paper we compute for the first time an algebraic ATR point on a curve which is not uniformizable by any Shimura curve, thus providing the first piece of numerical evidence that Darmon's construction works beyond geometric modularity. To this purpose we improve the method proposed by Darmon and Logan by removing the requirement that the real quadratic field be norm-euclidean, and accelerating the numerical integration of Hilbert modular forms.

Elementary Matrix Decomposition and The Computation of Darmon Points with Higher Conductor

We extend the algorithm of Darmon-Green and Darmon-Pollack for computing p-adic Darmon points on elliptic curves to the case of composite conductor. We also extend the algorithm of Darmon-Logan for computing ATR Darmon points to treat curves of nontrivial conductor. Both cases involve an algorithmic decomposition into elementary matrices in congruence subgroups Γ(N) for ideals N in certain rings of S-integers. We use these extensions to provide additional evidence in support of the conjectures on the rationality of Darmon points.

Modular abelian varieties over number fields

The main result of this paper is a characterization of the abelian varieties $B/K$ defined over Galois number fields with the property that the zeta function $L(B/K;s)$ is equivalent to the product of zeta functions of non-CM newforms for congruence subgroups $Γ_1(N)$. The characterization involves the structure of End(B), isogenies between the Galois conjugates of $B$, and a Galois cohomology class attached to $B/K$. We call the varieties having this property strongly modular. The last section is devoted to the study of a family of abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication. As an illustration of the ways in which the general results of the paper can be applied we prove the strong modularity of some particular abelian surfaces belonging to that family, we show how to find nontrivial examples of strongly modular varieties by twisting, and prove the existence of strongly modular surfaces satisfying certain properties.

Almost totally complex points on elliptic curves

Let $F/F_0$ be a quadratic extension of totally real number fields, and let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $F$ which is isogenous to its Galois conjugate over $F_0$. A quadratic extension $M/F$ is said to be almost totally complex (ATC) if all archimedean places of $F$ but one extend to a complex place of $M$. The main goal of this note is to provide a new construction of a supply of Darmon-like points on $E$, which are conjecturally defined over certain ring class fields of $M$. These points are constructed by means of an extension of Darmon's ATR method to higher dimensional modular abelian varieties, from which they inherit the following features: they are algebraic provided Darmon's conjectures on ATR points hold true, and they are explicitly computable, as we illustrate with a detailed example that provides certain numerical evidence for the validity of our conjectures.

Continued fractions in 2-stage euclidean quadratic fields

We discuss continued fractions on real quadratic number fields of class number 1. If the field has the property of being 2-stage euclidean, a generalization of the euclidean algorithm can be used to compute these continued fractions. Although it is conjectured that all real quadratic fields of class number 1 are 2-stage euclidean, this property has been proven for only a few of them. The main result of this paper is an algorithm that, given a real quadratic field of class number 1, verifies this conjecture, and produces as byproduct enough data to efficiently compute continued fraction expansions. If the field was not 2-stage euclidean, then the algorithm would not terminate. As an application, we enlarge the list of known 2-stage euclidean fields, by proving that all real quadratic fields of class number 1 and discriminant less than 8000 are 2-stage euclidean.

Fields of definition of building blocks with quaternionic multiplication

This paper investigates the fields of definition up to isogeny of the abelian varieties called building blocks. A result of Ribet characterizes the fields of definition of these varieties together with their endomorphisms, in terms of a Galois cohomology class canonically attached to them. However, when the building blocks have quaternionic multiplication, then the field of definition of the varieties can be strictly smaller than the field of definition of their endomorphisms. What we do is to give a characterization of the fields of definition of the varieties in this case (also in terms of their associated Galois cohomology class), by translating the problem into the language of group extensions with non-abelian kernel. We also make the computations that are needed in order to calculate in practice these fields from our characterization.

Abelian varieties with many endomorphisms and their absolutely simple factors

We characterize the abelian varieties arising as absolutely simple factors of GL2-type varieties over a number field k. In order to obtain this result, we study a wider class of abelian varieties: the k-varieties A/k satisfying that $\End_k^0(A)$ is a maximal subfield of $\End_k^0(A)$. We call them Ribet-Pyle varieties over k. We see that every Ribet-Pyle variety over k is isogenous over $\bar k$ to a power of an abelian k-variety and, conversely, that every abelian k-variety occurs as the absolutely simple factor of some Ribet-Pyle variety over k. We deduce from this correspondence a precise description of the absolutely simple factors of the varieties over k of GL2-type.

On the modularity level of modular abelian varieties over number fields

Let f be a weight two newform for Gamma_1(N) without complex multiplication. In this article we study the conductor of the absolutely simple factors B of the variety A_f over certain number fields L. The strategy we follow is to compute the restriction of scalars Res_{L/\Q}(B), and then to apply Milne's formula for the conductor of the restriction of scalars. In this way we obtain an expression for the local exponents of the conductor N_L(B). Under some hypothesis it is possible to give global formulas relating this conductor with N. For instance, if N is squarefree we find that N_L(B) belongs to Z and N_L(B)*f_L^{dim B}=N^{dim B}, where f_L is the conductor of L.
