The de Hass-van Alphen quantum oscillations in a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal TiSb2

We have used the de Hass-van Alphen (dHvA) effect to investigate the Fermi surface of high-quality crystalline TiSb2, which unveiled a nontrivial topologic nature by analyzing the dHvA quantum oscillations. Moreover, our analysis on the quantum oscillation frequencies associated with nonzero Berry phase when the magnetic field is parallel to both of the ab-plane and c-axis of TiSb2 finds that the Fermi surface topology has a three-dimensional (3D) feature. The results are supported by the first-principle calculations which revealed a symmetry-protected Dirac point appeared along the Γ-Z high symmetry line near the Fermi level. On the (001) surface, the bulk Dirac points are found to project onto the -Γ point with nontrivial surface states. Our finding will substantially enrich the family of 3D Dirac semimetals which are useful for topological applications.

Bulk Fermi surface of the layered superconductor TaSe3 with three-dimensional strong topological insulator state

High magnetic field transport measurements and ab initio calculations on the layered superconductor TaSe3 have provided compelling evidences for the existence of a three-dimensional strong topological insulator state. Longitudinal magnetotransport measurements up to ~ 33 T unveiled striking Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations with two fundamental frequencies at 100 T and 175 T corresponding to a nontrivial electron Fermi pocket at the B point and a nontrivial hole Fermi pocket at the Γ point respectively in the Brillouin zone. However, calculations revealed one more electron pocket at the B point, which was not detected by the magnetotransport measurements, presumably due to the limited carrier momentum relaxation time. Angle dependent quantum oscillations by rotating the sample with respect to the magnetic field revealed clear changes in the two fundamental frequencies, indicating anisotropic electronic Fermi pockets. The ab initio calculations gave the topological Z2 invariants of (1; 100) and revealed a single Dirac cone on the (1 0 -1) surface at the X point with helical spin texture at a constant-energy contour, suggesting a strong topological insulator state. The results demonstrate TaSe3 an excellent platform to study the interplay between topological phase and superconductivity and a promising system for the exploration of topological superconductivity.

Magnetotransport properties of the layered CaAl2Si2 semimetal hosting multiple nontrivial topological states

Combination of different nontrivial topological states in a single material is capable of realizing multiple functionalities and exotic physics, but such materials are still very sparse. We report herein the results of magnetotransport measurements and ab initio calculations on single crystalline CaAl2Si2 semimetal. The transport properties could be well understood in connection with the two-band model, agreeing well with the theoretical calculations indicating four main sheets of Fermi surface consisting of three hole pockets centered at the Γ point and one electron pocket centered at the M point in the Brillouin zone. The single fundamental frequency imposed in the quantum oscillations of magnetoresistance corresponds to the electron Fermi pocket. Without spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the ab initio calculations suggest CaAl2Si2 as a system hosting a topological nodal-line setting around the Γ point in the Brillouin zone close to the Fermi level. Once including the SOC, the fragile nodal-line will be gapped and a pair of Dirac points emerge along the high symmetric Γ-A direction, which is about 1.22 eV below the Fermi level. The SOC can also induce a topological insulator state along the Γ-A direction with a gap of about 3 meV. The results demonstrate CaAl2Si2 as an excellent platform for the study of novel topological physics with multiple topological states.

Robust magnetoresistance in TaAs2 under pressure up to about 37 GPa

The extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) in nonmagnetic semimetals has inspired growing interest owing to both intriguing physics and potential applications. We report results of synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and electrical transport measurements on TaAs2 under pressure up to ~ 37 GPa, which revealed an anisotropic compression of the unit cell, formation of unusual As-As bonds above 9.5 GPa, and enhancement of metallicity. Interestingly, the MR of TaAs2 under pressure changed gently, which at 1.7 GPa is 96.6% and at 36.6 GPa is still 36.7%. The almost robust MR under pressure could be related to the nearly stable electronic structure unveiled by the ab initio calculations. The discovery would expand the potential use of XMR even under high pressure.

Pressure-Induced Structural Phase Transition and a Special Amorphization Phase of Two-Dimensional Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Cr2Ge2Te6

Layered transition-metal trichalcogenides have become one of the research frontiers as two-dimensional magnets and candidate materials used for phase-change memory devices. Herein we report the high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and resistivity measurements on Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) single crystal by using diamond anvil cell techniques, which reveal a mixture of crystalline-to-crystalline and crystalline-to-amorphous transitions taking place concurrently at 18.3-29.2 GPa. The polymorphic transition could be interpreted by atomic layer reconstruction and the amorphization could be understood in connection with randomly flipping atoms into van der Waals gaps. The amorphous (AM) phase is quenchable to ambient conditions. The electrical resistance of CGT shows a bouncing point at ~ 18 GPa, consistent with the polymorphism phase transition. Interestingly, the high-pressure AM phase exhibits metallic resistance with the magnitude comparable to that of high-pressure crystalline phases, whereas the resistance of the AM phase at ambient pressure fails to exceed that of the crystalline phase, indicating that the AM phase of CGT appeared under high pressure is quite unique and similar behavior has never been observed in other phase-change materials. The results definitely would have significant implications for the design of new functional materials.

Quantum oscillations and nontrivial topological state in a compensated semimetal TaP2

We report systematic magneto-transport measurements and ab initio calculations on single-crystalline TaP2, a new member of the transition-metal dipnictides. We observed unsaturated magnetoresistance (MR) reaching ~ 700% at a magnetic field (B) of 9 T at 2 K along with striking Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations. Our analysis on the SdH oscillations reveals nonzero Berry phase, indicating nontrivial band topology. The analysis also uncovers three fundamental magnetic oscillation frequencies of 72 T, 237 T, and 356 T, consistent with the theoretical calculations which reveal one hole pocket and two electron pockets at the L point and one electron pocket at the Z point of the Brillouin zone. We also found negative longitudinal MR (n-MR) within a narrow window of the angles between B and the electric current (I). The n-MR could be fitted with the Adler-Bell-Jackiw chiral anomaly equation but the origin remains yet ambiguous. The ab inito calculations suggest TaP2 as a weak topological insulator with the Z2 indices of (0; 111), which exhibits topological surface states on the (001) surface.

Bivariate Luminosity Function of Galaxy Pairs

We measure the bivariate luminosity function (BLF) of galaxy pairs and use it to probe and characterize the galaxy-galaxy interaction between pair members. The galaxy pair sample is selected from the main galaxy sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey and supplied with a significant number of redshifts from the LAMOST spectral and GAMA surveys. We find the BLFs depend on the projected distance $d_{\text{p}}$ between pair members. At large separation $d_{\text{p}} > 150 h^{-1}\ \text{kpc}$, the BLF degenerates into a luminosity function (LF) of single galaxies, indicating few interactions between pair members. At $100 h^{-1}\ \text{kpc} \leq d_{\text{p}} \leq 150 h^{-1}\ \text{kpc}$, the BLF starts to show the correlation between pair members, in the sense that the shape of the conditional luminosity function (CLF) of one member galaxy starts to depend on the luminosity of the other member galaxy. Specifically, the CLF with a brighter companion has a steeper faint-end slope, which becomes even more significant at $50 h^{-1}\ \text{kpc} \leq d_{\text{p}} \leq 100 h^{-1}\ \text{kpc}$. This behavior is consistent with the scenario, \textit{and also is the observational evidence}, that dynamic friction drives massive major merger pairs to merge more quickly. At close distance $d_{\text{p}} \leq 50 h^{-1}\ \text{kpc}$, besides the merging time-scale effect, the BLF also shows an overall brightening of $ΔM_r \geq 0.04$ mag, which reveals the enhanced star formation of the close-pair phase. By combining another statistical conclusion that the star formation rate of late-type galaxies in close pairs is enhanced at a level of about 40\%, we further conclude that the average starburst time-scale of close pairs is as long as 0.4 Gyr.

Magnetic exchange induced Weyl state in a semimetal EuCd2Sb2

Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) bearing long-time pursuing are still very rare. We herein identified magnetic exchange induced Weyl state in EuCd2Sb2, a semimetal in type IV magnetic space group, via performing high magnetic field (B) magneto-transport measurements and ab initio calculations. For the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure of EuCd2Sb2, external B larger than 3.2 T can align Eu spins to be fully polarized along the c-axis and consequently drive the system into a ferromagnetic (FM) state. Measurements up to B ~ 55 T revealed a striking Shubnikov-de Hass oscillation imposed by a nontrivial Berry phase. We unveiled a phase transition from a small-gap AFM topological insulator into a FM WSM in which Weyl points emerged along the Γ-Z path. Fermi arcs on (100) and (010) surfaces are also revealed. The results pave a way towards realization of various topological states in a single material through magnetic exchange manipulation.

Inter-sentence Relation Extraction for Associating Biological Context with Events in Biomedical Texts

We present an analysis of the problem of identifying biological context and associating it with biochemical events in biomedical texts. This constitutes a non-trivial, inter-sentential relation extraction task. We focus on biological context as descriptions of the species, tissue type and cell type that are associated with biochemical events. We describe the properties of an annotated corpus of context-event relations and present and evaluate several classifiers for context-event association trained on syntactic, distance and frequency features.

Mixed-Stationary Gaussian Process for Flexible Non-Stationary Modeling of Spatial Outcomes

Gaussian processes (GPs) are commonplace in spatial statistics. Although many non-stationary models have been developed, there is arguably a lack of flexibility compared to equipping each location with its own parameters. However, the latter suffers from intractable computation and can lead to overfitting. Taking the instantaneous stationarity idea, we construct a non-stationary GP with the stationarity parameter individually set at each location. Then we utilize the non-parametric mixture model to reduce the effective number of unique parameters. Different from a simple mixture of independent GPs, the mixture in stationarity allows the components to be spatial correlated, leading to improved prediction efficiency. Theoretical properties are examined and a linearly scalable algorithm is provided. The application is shown through several simulated scenarios as well as the massive spatiotemporally correlated temperature data.

Magic wavelengths of Ca$^{+}$ ion for linearly and circularly polarized light

The dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the low-lying states of Ca$^{+}$ for linearly and circularly polarized light are calculated by using relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization (RCICP) approach. The magic wavelengths, at which the two levels of the transitions have the same ac Stark shifts, for $4s$-$4p_{j,m}$ and $4s$-$3d_{j,m}$ magnetic sublevels transitions are determined. The present magic wavelengths for linearly polarized light agree with the available results excellently. The polarizability for the circularly polarized light has the scalar, vector and tensor components. The dynamic polarizability is different for each of magnetic sublevels of the atomic state. Additional magic wavelengths have been found for the circularly polarized light. We recommend that the measurement of the magic wavelength near 850 nm for $4s-4p_{\frac32,m=\pm\frac32,\pm\frac12}$ could be able to determine the oscillator strength ratio of $f_{4p_{\frac32} \to 3d_{\frac32}}$ and $f_{4p_{\frac32} \to 3d_{\frac52}}$.

Polarizabilities and tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine ground states of $^{87,85}$Rb

The static and dynamic polarizabilities, and the tune-out wavelengths of the ground state of Rb and the hyperfine ground states of $^{87, 85}$Rb have been calculated by using relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization(RCICP) approach. It is found that the first primary tune-out wavelengths of the $ 5s_{1/2}, F=1, 2 $ states of $ ^{87}$Rb are 790.018187(193) nm and 790.032602(193) nm severally, where the calculated result for the $ 5s_{1/2}, F=2 $ state is in good agreement with the latest high-precision measurement 790.032388(32) nm [Phys. Rev. A 92, 052501 (2015)]. Similarly, the first primary tune-out wavelengths of the $ 5s_{1/2}, F=2, 3 $ states of $^{85}$Rb are 790.023515(218) nm and 790.029918(218) nm respectively. Furthermore, the tune-out wavelengths for the different magnetic sublevels $ M_{F}$ of each hyperfine level $F$ are also determined by considering the contributions of tensor polarizabilities.

Giant semiclassical magnetoresistance in high mobility TaAs2 semimetal

We report the observation of colossal positive magnetoresistance (MR) in single crystalline, high mobility TaAs2 semimetal. The excellent fit of MR by a single quadratic function of the magnetic field B over a wide temperature range (T = 2-300 K) suggests the semiclassical nature of the MR. The measurements of Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, as well as band structure calculations suggest that the giant MR originates from the nearly perfectly compensated electrons and holes in TaAs2. The quadratic MR can even exceed 1,200,000% at B = 9 T and T = 2 K, which is one of the largest values among those of all known semi-metallic compounds including the very recently discovered WTe2 and NbSb2. The giant positive magnetoresistance in TaAs2, which not only has a fundamentally different origin from the negative colossal MR observed in magnetic systems, but also provides a nice complemental system that will be beneficial for applications in magnetoelectronic devices

Functional Gaussian Process Model for Bayesian Nonparametric Analysis

Gaussian process is a theoretically appealing model for nonparametric analysis, but its computational cumbersomeness hinders its use in large scale and the existing reduced-rank solutions are usually heuristic. In this work, we propose a novel construction of Gaussian process as a projection from fixed discrete frequencies to any continuous location. This leads to a valid stochastic process that has a theoretic support with the reduced rank in the spectral density, as well as a high-speed computing algorithm. Our method provides accurate estimates for the covariance parameters and concise form of predictive distribution for spatial prediction. For non-stationary data, we adopt the mixture framework with a customized spectral dependency structure. This enables clustering based on local stationarity, while maintains the joint Gaussianness. Our work is directly applicable in solving some of the challenges in the spatial data, such as large scale computation, anisotropic covariance, spatio-temporal modeling, etc. We illustrate the uses of the model via simulations and an application on a massive dataset.

A ferroelectric-like structural transition in a metal

Metals cannot exhibit ferroelectricity because static internal electric fields are screened by conduction electrons, but in 1965, Anderson and Blount predicted the possibility of a ferroelectric metal, in which a ferroelectric-like structural transition occurs in the metallic state. Up to now, no clear example of such a material has been identified. Here we report on a centrosymmetric (R-3c) to non-centrosymmetric (R3c) transition in metallic LiOsO3 that is structurally equivalent to the ferroelectric transition of LiNbO3. The transition involves a continuous shift in the mean position of Li+ ions on cooling below 140K. Its discovery realizes the scenario described by Anderson and Blount, and establishes a new class of materials whose properties may differ from those of normal metals.

Superconductivity suppression of Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 single crystals by substitution of transition-metal (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn)

We investigated the doping effects of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities on the single-crystalline p-type Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) superconductors. The superconductivity indicates robustly against impurity of Ru, while weakly against the impurities of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. However, the present Tc suppression rate of both magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities remains much lower than what was expected for the s\pm-wave model. The temperature dependence of resistivity data is observed an obvious low-T upturn for the crystals doped with high-level impurity, which is due to the occurrence of localization. Thus, the relatively weak Tc suppression effect from Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are considered as a result of localization rather than pair-breaking effect in s\pm-wave model.

Generalized extreme value regression for binary response data: An application to B2B electronic payments system adoption

In the information system research, a question of particular interest is to interpret and to predict the probability of a firm to adopt a new technology such that market promotions are targeted to only those firms that were more likely to adopt the technology. Typically, there exists significant difference between the observed number of ``adopters'' and ``nonadopters,'' which is usually coded as binary response. A critical issue involved in modeling such binary response data is the appropriate choice of link functions in a regression model. In this paper we introduce a new flexible skewed link function for modeling binary response data based on the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution. We show how the proposed GEV links provide more flexible and improved skewed link regression models than the existing skewed links, especially when dealing with imbalance between the observed number of 0's and 1's in a data. The flexibility of the proposed model is illustrated through simulated data sets and a billing data set of the electronic payments system adoption from a Fortune 100 company in 2005.

Persistent spin currents in electron systems with spin-orbit interaction

We investigate the persistent spin currents in one- and two-dimensional electron systems with spin-orbit interaction in thermodynamics equilibrium at absolute zero temperature. The persistent spin current is the intrinsic one which is connected with the Berry phases in the configuration spaces of an electron system and winding numbers in the field configurations of electrons. When the topological space of the configuration of a system has the nontrivial first homotopy groups, the persistent spin currents in the system could be nonzero and not easily destroyed by impurity scattering in ballistic limit. The non-vanishing background spin currents in infinite two-dimensional electron system found by Rashba could be realized by the transport persistent spin currents in a finite torus electron system with spin-orbit interaction. In this sense, we meet the challenge proposed by Rashba.
