Nontrivial topological states in BaSn5 superconductor probed by de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations

We report herein the nontrivial topological states in an intrinsic type-II superconductor BaSn5 (Tc ~ 4.4 K) probed via measuring the magnetizations, specific heat, de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect and performing first principles calculations. The first principles calculations reveal a topological nodal ring structure centering at the H point in the kz = π plane of the Brillouin zone (BZ), which could be gapped by spin-orbit coupling (SOC), yielding rather small gaps below and above the Fermi level about 0.04 eV and 0.14 eV, respectively. The SOC also results in a pair of Dirac points along the Γ-A direction and located ~ 0.2 eV above the Fermi level. The analysis of the dHvA quantum oscillations supports the calculations by revealing nontrivial Berry phase originated from three hole and one electron pockets related to the bands forming the Dirac cones. Our study thus provides an excellent avenue for investigating the interplay between superconductivity and nontrivial topological states.

Pressure-induced superconductivity reentrant in transition metal dichalcogenide TiSe2

Through either elements intercalation or application of pressure, transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TiSe2 exhibits superconductivity in proximity to a charge density wave (CDW) quantum critical point (QCP), thus providing an ideal avenue to study the correlation between the two symmetry-breaking exotic quantum electronic states. We report herein that, in addition to the well-known superconducting dome that emerges within the low pressure range of 2 - 4 GPa and peaks with the maximal Tc of about 1.8 K, the pressure induces another separate superconducting transition starting around 15 GPa with a substantially higher Tc that reaches 5.6 K at about 21.5 GPa. The high-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements unveil that the superconductivity reentrant is caused by a first-order structural phase transition (from P-3m1 space group to Pnma space group), which is also supported by the density functional theory calculation. A comparative theoretical calculation also reveals that the conventional phonon-mediated mechanism can account for the superconductivity of 1T-TiSe2 under low pressure, while the electron-phonon coupling of 4O-TiSe2 under high pressure is too weak to induce the superconductivity with a Tc as high as 5.6 K. This implies that the emergent superconductivity in the 4O-TiSe2 may have an unconventional origin. Our finding would open a new window toward the discovery of more exotic quantum states in transition metal dichalcogenides via high pressure.

Pressure-induced ideal Weyl semimetal state in the layered antiferromagnet EuCd2As2

The rich nontrivial topological phases rooted in the interplay between magnetism and topology in the layered antiferromagnet EuCd2As2 have captured vast attention, especially the ideal Weyl semimetal state realized in the spin-polarized ferromagnetic (FM) structure driven by a moderate external magnetic field. In this work, combining high-pressure magnetotransport measurements, structure chracterizations and first principles calculations, we find that application of pressure can also realize the ideal Weyl state in EuCd2As2 through driving the in-plane antiferromagnetic state across an intermediate in-plane FM state then into the out-of-plane FM state. Our high-pressure angle dispersive X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy measurements excluded structure transition and/or change of Eu2+ valence state as the sources for the magnetic phase transitions. Alternatively, the apparently reduced axial ratio (c/a) and compressed Eu-layer space distance should play important roles. Our result provides an alternative way to realize the ideal Weyl semimetal state in EuCd2As2 and would be instructive for the exploration of exotic topological properties in such layered magnetic topological phase with strongly competing magnetic exchanges by using high pressure.

DEVO: Depth-Event Camera Visual Odometry in Challenging Conditions

We present a novel real-time visual odometry framework for a stereo setup of a depth and high-resolution event camera. Our framework balances accuracy and robustness against computational efficiency towards strong performance in challenging scenarios. We extend conventional edge-based semi-dense visual odometry towards time-surface maps obtained from event streams. Semi-dense depth maps are generated by warping the corresponding depth values of the extrinsically calibrated depth camera. The tracking module updates the camera pose through efficient, geometric semi-dense 3D-2D edge alignment. Our approach is validated on both public and self-collected datasets captured under various conditions. We show that the proposed method performs comparable to state-of-the-art RGB-D camera-based alternatives in regular conditions, and eventually outperforms in challenging conditions such as high dynamics or low illumination.

Tunable intrinsic ferromagnetic topological phases in bulk van der Waals crystal MnSb6Te10

Intrinsic ferromagnetism is a crucial ingredient to realize quantum anomalous Hall effect in quasi two dimensional materials, thus the search of intrinsic ferromagnetic topological materials is one of the most concerned issues in the field of topological phases of matter. In this work, combining magnetotransport measurements, first principles calculations, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies, we find that in MnSb6Te10, the n = 2 member of the MnSb2Te4/(Sb2Te3)n family, the strong magnetic competition realizes a fragile ferromagnetic ground state, which whereas easily enters into ferrimagnetic and the Z_2 antiferromagnetic topological insulator phase with warming to higher temperature. Interestingly, the system stays in an inversion-symmetry-protected axion insulator phase in the ferromagnetic ground state as well as in the external magnetic field driven spin-polarized FM phase and can be converted into a Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes in the valence bands with hole doping, which are manifested by the measured notable intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. Our work thus provides an intrinsic magnetic topological material which is highly tunable into versatile topological phases by temperature, magnetic field, as well as carrier doping.

Magnetization tunable Weyl states in EuB6

The interplay between magnetism and topological band structure offers extraordinary opportunities to realize rich exotic magnetic topological phases such as axion insulators, Weyl semimetals, and quantum anomalous Hall insulators, which therefore has attracted fast growing research interest. The rare-earth hexaborides EuB6 represents an interesting magnetic topological phase with tunable magnetizations along different crystallographic directions, while the correlation with the topological properties remains scarcely explored. In this work, combining magnetotransport measurements and first principles calculations, we demonstrate that EuB6 exhibits versatile magnetic topological phases along different crystallographic directions, which tightly correlate with the varied magnetizations. Moreover, by virtue of the weak magneto-crystalline anisotropy and the relatively strong coupling between the local magnetization and the conduction electrons, we show that the magnetic ground state of the system can be directly probed by the anisotropy in the magnetotransport properties. Our work thus introduces an excellent platform to study the rich topological phases that are tunable by magnetic orders.

Weak Antilocalization Effect up to ~ 120 K in the van der Waals Crystal Fe5-xGeTe2 with Near Room Temperature Ferromagnetism

The weak antilocalization (WAL) effect is known as a quantum correction to the classical conductivity, which never appeared in two-dimensional magnets. In this work, we reported the observation of a WAL effect in the van der Waals ferromagnet Fe5-xGeTe2 with a Curie temperature Tc ~ 270 K, which can even reach as high as ~ 120 K. The WAL effect could be well described by the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka and Maekawa-Fukuyama theories in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Moreover, A crossover from a peak to dip behavior around 60 K in both the magnetoresistance and magnetoconductance was observed, which could be ascribed to a rare example of temperature driven Lifshitz transition as indicated by the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first principles calculations. The reflective magnetic circular dichroism measurements indicate a possible spin reorientation that kills the WAL effect above 120 K. Our findings present a rare example of WAL effect in two-dimensional ferromagnet and also a magnetotransport fingerprint of the strong SOC in Fe5-xGeTe2. The results would be instructive for understanding the interaction Hamiltonian for such high Tc itinerant ferromagnetism as well as be helpful for the design of next-generation room temperature spintronic or twistronic devices.

Spinon Fermi surface spin liquid in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbSe$_2$

Triangular lattice of rare-earth ions with interacting effective spin-$1/2$ local moments is an ideal platform to explore the physics of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, crystal electric fields, and geometrical frustration. The Yb delafossites, NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch=O, S, Se) with Yb ions forming a perfect triangular lattice, have been suggested to be candidates for QSLs. Previous thermodynamics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon spin rotation measurements on NaYbCh$_2$ have supported the suggestion of the QSL ground states. The key signature of a QSL, the spin excitation continuum, arising from the spin quantum number fractionalization, has not been observed. Here we perform both elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as detailed thermodynamic measurements on high-quality single-crystalline NaYbSe$_2$ samples to confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 40 mK, and further reveal a clear signature of magnetic excitation continuum extending from 0.1 to 2.5 meV. The comparison between the structure of the magnetic excitation spectra and the theoretical expectation from the spinon continuum suggests that the ground state of NaYbSe$_2$ is a QSL with a spinon Fermi surface.

In Operando magnetometry study on the charge storage mechanism of SnCo alloy lithium ion batteries

In view of the long-standing controversy over the reversibility of transition metals in Sn-based alloys as anode for Li-ion batteries, an in situ real-time magnetic monitoring method was used to investigate the evolution of Sn-Co intermetallic during the electrochemical cycling. Sn-Co alloy film anodes with different compositions were prepared via magnetron sputtering without using binders and conductive additives. The magnetic responses showed that the Co particles liberated by Li insertion recombine fully with Sn during the delithiation to reform Sn-Co intermetallic into stannum richer phases Sn7Co3. However, as the Co content increases, it can only recombine partially with Sn into cobalt richer phases Sn3Co7. The unconverted Co particles may form a dense barrier layer and prevent the full reaction of Li with all the Sn in the anode, leading to lower capacities. These critical results shed light on understanding the reaction mechanism of transition metals, and provide valuable insights toward the design of high-performance Sn alloy based anodes.

Multiple magnetic topological phases in bulk van der Waals crystal MnSb4Te7

The magnetic van der Waals crystals MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n have drawn significant attention due to their rich topological properties and the tunability by external magnetic field. Although the MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n family have been intensively studied in the past few years, their close relatives, the MnSb2Te4/(Sb2Te3)n family, remain much less explored. In this work, combining magnetotransport measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first principles calculations, we find that MnSb4Te7, the n = 1 member of the MnSb2Te4/(Sb2Te3)n family, is a magnetic topological system with versatile topological phases which can be manipulated by both carrier doping and magnetic field. Our calculations unveil that its A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state stays in a Z_2 AFM topological insulator phase, which can be converted to an inversion-symmetry-protected axion insulator phase when in the ferromagnetic (FM) state. Moreover, when this system in the FM phase is slightly carrier doped on either the electron or hole side, it becomes a Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes in the highest valence bands and lowest conduction bands, which are manifested by the measured notable anomalous Hall effect. Our work thus introduces a new magnetic topological material with different topological phases which are highly tunable by carrier doping or magnetic field.

Multiple Weyl fermions in the noncentrosymmetric semimetal LaAlSi

The noncentrosymmetric RAlPn (R = rare earth, Pn = Si, Ge) family, predicted to host nonmagnetic and magnetic Weyl states, provide an excellent platform for investigating the relation between magnetism and Weyl physics. By using high field magnetotransport measurements and first principles calculations, we have unveiled herein both type-I and type-II Weyl states in the nonmagnetic LaAlSi. By a careful comparison between experimental results and theoretical calculations, nontrivial Berry phases associated with the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are ascribed to the electron Fermi pockets related to both types of Weyl points located ~ 0.1 eV above and exactly on the Fermi level, respectively. Under high magnetic field, signatures of Zeeman splitting are also observed. These results indicate that, in addition to the importance for exploring intriguing physics of multiple Weyl fermions, LaAlSi as a comparison with magnetic Weyl semimetals in the RAlPn family would also yield valuable insights into the relation between magnetism and Weyl physics.

Tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms

The static and dynamic electric-dipole polarizabilities and tune-out wavelengths for the ground state of Cs atoms are calculated by using a semiempirical relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization approach. By considering the hyperfine splittings, the static and dynamic polarizabilities, hyperfine Stark shifts, and tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms are determined. It is found that the hyperfine shifts of the first primary tune-out wavelengths are about $-$0.0135 nm and 0.0106 nm, which are very close to the hyperfine interaction energies. Additionally, the contribution of the tensor polarizability to the tune-out wavelengths is determined to be about $10^{-5} \sim 10^{-6}$ nm.

High-Pressure Crystal Growth, Superconducting Properties, and Electronic Band Structure of Nb2P5

Orthorhombic (space group: Pnma) Nb2P5 is a high-pressure phase that is quenchable to ambient pressure, which could viewed as the zigzag infinite P chain-inserted NbP2. We report herein the high-pressure crystal growth of Nb2P5 and the discovery of its superconducting transition at Tc ~ 2.6 K. The electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat capacity measurements on the high-quality crystal unveiled a conventional type-II weakly coupled s-wave nature of the superconductivity, with the upper critical field Hc2(0) ~ 0.5 T, the electron-phonon coupling strength λep ~ 0.5 - 0.8, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter \k{appa} ~ 100. The ab initio calculations on the electronic band structure unveiled nodal-line structures protected by different symmetries. The one caused by band inversion, for example, on the Γ-X and U-R paths of the Brillouin zone, likely could bring nontrivial topology and hence possible nontrivial surface state on the surface. The surface states on the (100), (010) and (110) surfaces were also calculated and discussed. The discovery of the phosphorus-rich Nb2P5 superconductor would be instructive for the design of more metal phosphides superconductors which might host unconventional superconductivity or potential technical applications.

Magnetism-induced topological transition in EuAs3

The nature of the interaction between magnetism and topology in magnetic topological semimetals remains mysterious, but may be expected to lead to a variety of novel physics. We present $ab$ $initio$ band calculations, electrical transport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on the magnetic semimetal EuAs$_3$, demonstrating a magnetism-induced topological transition from a topological nodal-line semimetal in the paramagnetic or the spin-polarized state to a topological massive Dirac metal in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state at low temperature, featuring a pair of massive Dirac points, inverted bands and topological surface states on the (010) surface. Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in the AFM state identify nonzero Berry phase and a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance ($n$-LMR) induced by the chiral anomaly, confirming the topological nature predicted by band calculations. When magnetic moments are fully polarized by an external magnetic field, an unsaturated and extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) of $\sim$ 2$\times10^5$ % at 1.8 K and 28.3 T is observed, likely arising from topological protection. Consistent with band calculations for the spin-polarized state, four new bands in quantum oscillations different from those in the AFM state are discerned, of which two are topologically protected. Nodal-line structures at the $Y$ point in the Brillouin zone (BZ) are proposed in both the spin-polarized and paramagnetic states, and the latter is proven by ARPES. Moreover, a temperature-induced Lifshitz transition accompanied by the emergence of a new band below 3 K is revealed. These results indicate that magnetic EuAs$_3$ provides a rich platform to explore exotic physics arising from the interaction of magnetism with topology.

Mixed GMsFEM for linear poroelasticity problems in heterogeneous porous media

Accurate numerical simulations of interaction between fluid and solid play an important role in applications. The task is challenging in practical scenarios as the media are usually highly heterogeneous with very large contrast. To overcome this computational challenge, various multiscale methods are developed. In this paper, we consider a class of linear poroelasticity problems in high contrast heterogeneous porous media, and develop a mixed generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) to obtain a fast computational method. Our aim is to develop a multiscale method that is robust with respect to the heterogeneities and contrast of the media, and gives a mass conservative fluid velocity field. We will construct decoupled multiscale basis functions for the elastic displacement as well as fluid velocity. Our multiscale basis functions are local. The construction is based on some suitable choices of local snapshot spaces and local spectral decomposition, with the goal of extracting dominant modes of the solutions. For the pressure, we will use piecewise constant approximation. We will present several numerical examples to illustrate the performance of our method. Our results indicate that the proposed method is able to give accurate numerical solutions with a small degree of freedoms.

Magnetic critical behavior of the van der Waals Fe5GeTe2 crystal with near room temperature ferromagnetism

The van der Waals ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2 has a Curie temperature TC of about 270 K, which can be raised above room temperature by tuning the Fe deficiency content. To achieve insights into its ferromagnetic exchange, we have studied the critical behavior by measuring the magnetization in bulk Fe5GeTe2 crystal around the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition. The analysis of the magnetization by employing various techniques including the modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot and critical isotherm analysis achieved a set of reliable critical exponents with TC = 273.7 K, beta = 0.3457, gamma = 1.40617, and delta = 5.021, suggesting a three-dimensional magnetic exchange with the distance decaying as J(r) ~ (r)$^-4.916, which is close to that of a three-dimensional Heisenberg model with long-range magnetic coupling.

The de Hass-van Alphen quantum oscillations in BaSn3 superconductor with multiple Dirac fermions

By measuring the de Hass-van Alphen effect and calculating the electronic band structure, we have investigated the bulk Fermi surface of the BaSn3 superconductor with a transition temperature of ~ 4.4 K. Striking de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) quantum oscillations are observed when the magnetic field B is perpendicular to both (100) and (001) planes. Our analysis unveiled nontrivial Berry phase imposed in the quantum oscillations when B is perpendicular to (100), with two fundamental frequencies at 31.5 T and 306.7 T, which likely arise from two corresponding hole pockets of the bands forming a type-II Dirac point. The results are supported by the ab initio calculations indicating a type-II Dirac point setting and tilting along the high symmetric K-H line of the Brillouin zone, about 0.13 eV above the Fermi level. Moreover, the calculations also revealed other two type-I Dirac points on the high symmetric Γ-A direction, but slightly far below the Fermi level. The results demonstrate BaSn3 as an excellent platform for the study of not only exotic properties of different types of Dirac fermions in a single material, but also the interplay between nontrivial topological states and superconductivity.
