Collaborative Knowledge Sharing-empowered Effective Semantic Rate Maximization for Two-tier Semantic-Bit Communication Networks

Effective task-oriented semantic communications relies on perfect knowledge alignment between transmitters and receivers for accurate recovery of task-related semantic information, which can be susceptible to knowledge misalignment and performance degradation in practice. To tackle this issue, continual knowledge updating and sharing are crucial to adapt to evolving task and user related demands, despite the incurred resource overhead and increased latency. In this paper, we propose a novel collaborative knowledge sharing-empowered semantic transmission mechanism in a two-tier edge network, exploiting edge cooperations and bit communications to address KB mismatch. By deriving a generalized effective semantic transmission rate (GESTR) that considers both semantic accuracy and overhead, we formulate a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem to maximize GESTR of all mobile devices by optimizing knowledge sharing decisions, extraction ratios, and BS/subchannel allocations, subject to task accuracy and delay requirements. The joint optimum solution can be obtained by proposed fractional programming based branch and bound algorithm and modified Kuhn-Munkres algorithm efficiently. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of proposed solution, especially in low signal-to-noise conditions.

Retrieval-augmented Generation for GenAI-enabled Semantic Communications

Semantic communication (SemCom) is an emerging paradigm aiming at transmitting only task-relevant semantic information to the receiver, which can significantly improve communication efficiency. Recent advancements in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) have empowered GenAI-enabled SemCom (GenSemCom) to further expand its potential in various applications. However, current GenSemCom systems still face challenges such as semantic inconsistency, limited adaptability to diverse tasks and dynamic environments, and the inability to leverage insights from past transmission. Motivated by the success of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) in the domain of GenAI, this paper explores the integration of RAG in GenSemCom systems. Specifically, we first provide a comprehensive review of existing GenSemCom systems and the fundamentals of RAG techniques. We then discuss how RAG can be integrated into GenSemCom. Following this, we conduct a case study on semantic image transmission using an RAG-enabled diffusion-based SemCom system, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed integration. Finally, we outline future directions for advancing RAG-enabled GenSemCom systems.

Integrated Heterogeneous Service Provisioning: Unifying Beyond-Communication Capabilities with MDMA in 6G and Future Wireless Networks

The rapid evolution and convergence of wireless technologies and vertical applications have fundamentally reshaped our lifestyles and industries. Future wireless networks, especially 6G, are poised to support a wide range of applications enabled by heterogeneous services, leveraging both traditional connectivity-centric functions and emerging beyond-communication capabilities, particularly localization, sensing, and synchronization. However, integrating these new capabilities into a unified 6G paradigm presents significant challenges. This article provides an in-depth analysis of these technical challenges for integrative 6G design and proposes three strategies for concurrent heterogeneous service provisioning, with the aggregated goal of maximizing integration gains while minimizing service provisioning overhead. First, we adopt multi-dimensional multiple access (MDMA) as an inclusive enabling platform to flexibly integrate various capabilities by shared access to multi-dimensional radio resources. Next, we propose value-oriented heterogeneous service provisioning to maximize the integration gain through situation-aware MDMA. To enhance scalability, we optimize control and user planes by eliminating redundant control information and enabling service-oriented prioritization. Finally, we evaluate the proposed framework with a case study on integrated synchronization and communication, demonstrating its potential for concurrent heterogeneous service provisioning.

OTFS-MDMA: An Elastic Multi-Domain Resource Utilization Mechanism for High Mobility Scenarios

By harnessing the delay-Doppler (DD) resource domain, orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) substantially improves the communication performance under high-mobility scenarios by maintaining quasi-time-invariant channel characteristics. However, conventional multiple access (MA) techniques fail to efficiently support OTFS in the face of diverse communication requirements. Recently, multi-dimensional MA (MDMA) has emerged as a flexible channel access technique by elastically exploiting multi-domain resources for tailored service provision. Therefore, we conceive an elastic multi-domain resource utilization mechanism for a novel multi-user OTFS-MDMA system by leveraging user-specific channel characteristics across the DD, power, and spatial resource domains. Specifically, we divide all DD resource bins into separate subregions called DD resource slots (RSs), each of which supports a fraction of users, thus reducing the multi-user interference. Then, the most suitable MA, including orthogonal, non-orthogonal, or spatial division MA (OMA/ NOMA/ SDMA), will be selected with each RS based on the interference levels in the power and spatial domains, thus enhancing the spectrum efficiency. Then, we jointly optimize the user assignment, access scheme selection, and power allocation in all DD RSs to maximize the weighted sum-rate subject to their minimum rate and various practical constraints. Since this results in a non-convex problem, we develop a dynamic programming and monotonic optimization (DPMO) method to find the globally optimal solution in the special case of disregarding rate constraints. Subsequently, we apply a low-complexity algorithm to find sub-optimal solutions in general cases.

Learning-Based Intermittent CSI Estimation with Adaptive Intervals in Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Due to the distinct objectives and multipath utilization mechanisms between the communication module and radar module, the system design of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) necessitates two types of channel state information (CSI), i.e., communication CSI representing the whole channel gain and phase shifts, and radar CSI exclusively focused on target mobility and position information. However, current ISAC systems apply an identical mechanism to estimate both types of CSI at the same predetermined estimation interval, leading to significant overhead and compromised performances. Therefore, this paper proposes an intermittent communication and radar CSI estimation scheme with adaptive intervals for individual users/targets, where both types of CSI can be predicted using channel temporal correlations for cost reduction or re-estimated via training signal transmission for improved estimation accuracy. Specifically, we jointly optimize the binary CSI re-estimation/prediction decisions and transmit beamforming matrices for individual users/targets to maximize communication transmission rates and minimize radar tracking errors and costs in a multiple-input single-output (MISO) ISAC system. Unfortunately, this problem has causality issues because it requires comparing system performances under re-estimated CSI and predicted CSI during the optimization. Additionally, the binary decision makes the joint design a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, resulting in high complexity when using conventional optimization algorithms. Therefore, we propose a deep reinforcement online learning (DROL) framework that first implements an online deep neural network (DNN) to learn the binary CSI updating decisions from the experiences. Given the learned decisions, we propose an efficient algorithm to solve the remaining beamforming design problem efficiently.

Adaptive Perturbation Enhanced SCL Decoder for Polar Codes

For polar codes, successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding algorithm significantly improves finite-length performance compared to SC decoding. SCL-flip decoding can further enhance the performance but the gain diminishes as code length increases, due to the difficulty in locating the first error bit position. In this work, we introduce an SCL-perturbation decoding algorithm to address this issue. A basic version of the algorithm introduces small random perturbations to the received symbols before each SCL decoding attempt, and exhibits non-diminishing gain at large block lengths. Its enhanced version adaptively performs random perturbations or directional perturbation on each received symbol according to previous decoding results, and managed to correct more errors with fewer decoding attempts. Extensive simulation results demonstrate stable gains across various code rates, lengths and list sizes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first SCL enhancement with non-diminishing gains as code length increases, and achieves unprecedented efficiency. With only one additional SCL-$L$ decoding attempt (in total two), the proposed algorithm achieves SCL-$2L$-equivalent performance. Since the gain is obtained without increasing list size, the algorithm is best suited for hardware implementation.

Bridge the Present and Future: A Cross-Layer Matching Game in Dynamic Cloud-Aided Mobile Edge Networks

Cloud-aided mobile edge networks (CAMENs) allow edge servers (ESs) to purchase resources from remote cloud servers (CSs), while overcoming resource shortage when handling computation-intensive tasks of mobile users (MUs). Conventional trading mechanisms (e.g., onsite trading) confront many challenges, including decision-making overhead (e.g., latency) and potential trading failures. This paper investigates a series of cross-layer matching mechanisms to achieve stable and cost-effective resource provisioning across different layers (i.e., MUs, ESs, CSs), seamlessly integrated into a novel hybrid paradigm that incorporates futures and spot trading. In futures trading, we explore an overbooking-driven aforehand cross-layer matching (OA-CLM) mechanism, facilitating two future contract types: contract between MUs and ESs, and contract between ESs and CSs, while assessing potential risks under historical statistical analysis. In spot trading, we design two backup plans respond to current network/market conditions: determination on contractual MUs that should switch to local processing from edge/cloud services; and an onsite cross-layer matching (OS-CLM) mechanism that engages participants in real-time practical transactions. We next show that our matching mechanisms theoretically satisfy stability, individual rationality, competitive equilibrium, and weak Pareto optimality. Comprehensive simulations in real-world and numerical network settings confirm the corresponding efficacy, while revealing remarkable improvements in time/energy efficiency and social welfare.

Hypergraph-Aided Task-Resource Matching for Maximizing Value of Task Completion in Collaborative IoT Systems

With the growing scale and intrinsic heterogeneity of Internet of Things (IoT) systems, distributed device collaboration becomes essential for effective task completion by dynamically utilizing limited communication and computing resources. However, the separated design and situation-agnostic operation of computing, communication and application layers create a fundamental challenge for rapid task-resource matching, which further deteriorate the overall task completion effectiveness. To overcome this challenge, we utilize hypergraph as a new tool to vertically unify computing, communication, and task aspects of IoT systems for an effective matching by accurately capturing the relationships between tasks and communication and computing resources. Specifically, a state-of-the-art task-resource matching hypergraph (TRM-hypergraph) model is proposed in this paper, which is used to effectively transform the process of allocating complex heterogeneous resources to convoluted tasks into a hypergraph matching problem. Taking into account computational complexity and storage, a game-theoretic hypergraph matching algorithm is proposed via considering the hypergraph matching problem as a non-cooperative multi-player clustering game. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed TRM-hypergraph model achieves superior performance in matching of tasks and resources compared with comparison algorithms.

Safeguarding Next Generation Multiple Access Using Physical Layer Security Techniques: A Tutorial

Driven by the ever-increasing requirements of ultra-high spectral efficiency, ultra-low latency, and massive connectivity, the forefront of wireless research calls for the design of advanced next generation multiple access schemes to facilitate provisioning of these stringent demands. This inspires the embrace of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in future wireless communication networks. Nevertheless, the support of massive access via NOMA leads to additional security threats, due to the open nature of the air interface, the broadcast characteristic of radio propagation as well as intertwined relationship among paired NOMA users. To address this specific challenge, the superimposed transmission of NOMA can be explored as new opportunities for security aware design, for example, multiuser interference inherent in NOMA can be constructively engineered to benefit communication secrecy and privacy. The purpose of this tutorial is to provide a comprehensive overview on the state-of-the-art physical layer security techniques that guarantee wireless security and privacy for NOMA networks, along with the opportunities, technical challenges, and future research trends.

Multi-User Multi-Application Packet Scheduling for Application-Specific QoE Enhancement Based on Knowledge-Embedded DDPG in 6G RAN

The rapidly growing diversity of concurrent applications from both different users and same devices calls for application-specific Quality of Experience (QoE) enhancement of future wireless communications. Achieving this goal relies on application-specific packet scheduling, as it is vital for achieving tailored QoE enhancement by realizing the application-specific Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and for optimal perceived QoE values. However, the intertwining diversified QoE perception mechanisms, fairness among concurrent applications, and the impact of network dynamics inevitably complicate tailored packet scheduling. To achieve concurrent application-specific QoE enhancement, the problem of multi-user multi-application packet scheduling in downlink 6G radio access network (RAN) is first formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP) problem in this paper. For solving this problem, a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-based solution is proposed. However, due to the high dimensionalities of both the state and action spaces, the trained DDPG agents might generate decisions causing unnecessary resource waste. Hence, a knowledge embedding method is proposed to adjust the decisions of the DDPG agents according to human insights. Extensive experiments are conducted, which demonstrate the superiority of DDPG-based packet schedulers over baseline algorithms and the effectiveness of the proposed knowledge embedding technique.

Dual-Functional Waveform Design with Local Sidelobe Suppression via OTFS Signaling

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is viewed as a key technology in future wireless networks. One of the main challenges in realizing ISAC is developing dual-functional waveforms that can communicate with communication receivers and perform radar sensing simultaneously. In this paper, we consider the joint design of a dual-functional orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) signal and a receiving filter for the ISAC system. The problem of ISAC waveform design is formulated as the minimization of the weighted integrated sidelobe level (WISL) of the ambiguity function and the interference term from ISAC waveform, with constraints on signal-to-noise ratio loss. The majorization-minimization algorithm combined with alternating iterative minimization is implemented to solve the optimization problem. Simulation results show that the WISL and the interference term can be significantly decreased to guarantee achievable data rates and detection performance.

Improving Channel Resilience for Task-Oriented Semantic Communications: A Unified Information Bottleneck Approach

Task-oriented semantic communications (TSC) enhance radio resource efficiency by transmitting task-relevant semantic information. However, current research often overlooks the inherent semantic distinctions among encoded features. Due to unavoidable channel variations from time and frequency-selective fading, semantically sensitive feature units could be more susceptible to erroneous inference if corrupted by dynamic channels. Therefore, this letter introduces a unified channel-resilient TSC framework via information bottleneck. This framework complements existing TSC approaches by controlling information flow to capture fine-grained feature-level semantic robustness. Experiments on a case study for real-time subchannel allocation validate the framework's effectiveness.

Accelerating the Delivery of Data Services over Uncertain Mobile Crowdsensing Networks

The challenge of exchanging and processing of big data over mobile crowdsensing (MCS) networks calls for designing seamless data service provisioning mechanisms to enable utilization of resources of mobile devices/users for crowdsensing tasks. Although conventional onsite spot trading of resources based on real-time network conditions can facilitate data sharing, it often suffers from prohibitively long service provisioning delays and unavoidable trading failures due to requiring timely analysis of dynamic network environment. These limitations motivate us to investigate an integrated forward and spot trading mechanism (iFAST), which entails a novel hybrid data trading protocol with time efficiency, over uncertain MCS ecosystems. In iFAST, the sellers (i.e., mobile devices who can contribute data) can provide long-term or temporary sensing services to the buyers (i.e., sensing tasks). Specifically, it enables signing long-term contracts in advance of future transactions through a forward trading mode, via analyzing historical statistics of the network/market, for which the notion of overbooking is introduced and promoted. iFAST further encourages the buyers with unsatisfying service quality to recruit temporary sellers through a spot trading mode, considering the current network/market conditions. We analyze the fundamental blocks of iFAST and provide a case study to demonstrate its performance. Inspirations for future research directions of next-generation sensing and communication are summarized.

SDOA-Net: An Efficient Deep Learning-Based DOA Estimation Network for Imperfect Array

The estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) is a crucial issue in conventional radar, wireless communication, and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. However, low-cost systems often suffer from imperfect factors, such as antenna position perturbations, mutual coupling effect, inconsistent gains/phases, and non-linear amplifier effect, which can significantly degrade the performance of DOA estimation. This paper proposes a DOA estimation method named super-resolution DOA network (SDOA-Net) based on deep learning (DL) to characterize the realistic array more accurately. Unlike existing DL-based DOA methods, SDOA-Net uses sampled received signals instead of covariance matrices as input to extract data features. Furthermore, SDOA-Net produces a vector that is independent of the DOA of the targets but can be used to estimate their spatial spectrum. Consequently, the same training network can be applied to any number of targets, reducing the complexity of implementation. The proposed SDOA-Net with a low-dimension network structure also converges faster than existing DL-based methods. The simulation results demonstrate that SDOA-Net outperforms existing DOA estimation methods for imperfect arrays. The SDOA-Net code is available online at https://github.com/chenpengseu/SDOA-Net.git.

Hierarchical Digital Twin for Efficient 6G Network Orchestration via Adaptive Attribute Selection and Scalable Network Modeling

Achieving a holistic and long-term understanding through accurate network modeling is essential for orchestrating future networks with increasing service diversity and infrastructure complexities. However, due to unselective data collection and uniform processing, traditional modeling approaches undermine the efficacy and timeliness of network orchestration. Additionally, temporal disparities arising from various modeling delays further impair the centralized decision-making with distributed models. In this paper, we propose a new hierarchical digital twin paradigm adapting to real-time network situations for problem-centered model construction. Specifically, we introduce an adaptive attribute selection mechanism that evaluates the distinct modeling values of diverse network attributes, considering their relevance to current network scenarios and inherent modeling complexity. By prioritizing critical attributes at higher layers, an efficient evaluation of network situations is achieved to identify target areas. Subsequently, scalable network modeling facilitates the inclusion of all identified elements at the lower layers, where more fine-grained digital twins are developed to generate targeted solutions for user association and power allocation. Furthermore, virtual-physical domain synchronization is implemented to maintain accurate temporal alignment between the digital twins and their physical counterparts, spanning from the construction to the utilization of the proposed paradigm. Extensive simulations validate the proposed approach, demonstrating its effectiveness in efficiently identifying pressing issues and delivering network orchestration solutions in complex 6G HetNets.

Long-Term or Temporary? Hybrid Worker Recruitment for Mobile Crowd Sensing and Computing

This paper investigates a novel hybrid worker recruitment problem where the mobile crowd sensing and computing (MCSC) platform employs workers to serve MCSC tasks with diverse quality requirements and budget constraints, under uncertainties in workers' participation and their local workloads. We propose a hybrid worker recruitment framework consisting of offline and online trading modes. The former enables the platform to overbook long-term workers (services) to cope with dynamic service supply via signing contracts in advance, which is formulated as 0-1 integer linear programming (ILP) with probabilistic constraints of service quality and budget.Besides, motivated by the existing uncertainties which may render long-term workers fail to meet the service quality requirement of each task, we augment our methodology with an online temporary worker recruitment scheme as a backup Plan B to support seamless service provisioning for MCSC tasks, which also represents a 0-1 ILP problem. To tackle these problems which are proved to be NP-hard, we develop three algorithms, namely, i) exhaustive searching, ii) unique index-based stochastic searching with risk-aware filter constraint, iii) geometric programming-based successive convex algorithm, which achieve the optimal or sub-optimal solutions. Experimental results demonstrate our effectiveness in terms of service quality, time efficiency, etc.
